2016 STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN MIDYEAR UPDATE Last week the Stewardship Committee mailed midyear statements and letters to all parishioners, who pledged in 2016. Also, the Committee sent letters to individuals and families, who have yet to make a commitment for this year. Recipients of the latter mailing are asked to prayerfully consider submitting their pledges to the Cathedral office. COMPLIMENTARY CPR COURSE AT HOLY TRINITY Holy Trinity is offering parishioners the chance to take a two hour Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course free of charge on Saturday, August 13, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Hellenic Cultural Center. Nick Stathopoulos, a parishioner and a certified American Heart Association CPR instructor, has offered this complimentary training to interested members. Taking the course provides an American Heart Association course completion card. The session covers basic information including CPR, AED usage, and the relief of choking victims of which all can help in an emergency. If you are interested, submit your name, phone number, and email address to the Cathedral office by August 6. ELIAS THE PROPHET was from Thesbe, a town of Galaad (Gilead) beyond the Jordan. He was of priestly lineage, a man of a solitary and ascetical character, clothed in a mantle of sheep skin and girded about his loins with a leather belt. His name is interpreted as "Yah is my God," and his zeal for the glory of God, reflected in his speech for teaching and rebuking, was likened to a burning lamp. Hence, he received the name Zealot. Set aflame with such zeal, he sternly reproved the impiety and lawlessness of Ahab and his wife Jezebel. He shut up heaven by means of prayer, and it did not rain for three years and six months. Ravens brought him food when, at God's command, he hid by the torrent of Horrath. Elias multiplied the little flour and oil of the poor widow of Sarephtha of Sidon, who had given him hospitality in her home and raised up her son when he died. He brought down fire from Heaven upon Mount Carmel, and it burned up the sacrifice offered to God before all the people of Israel that they might know the truth. At the torrent of Kisson, he slew 450 false prophets and priests, who worshipped idols and led the people astray. Elias received food wondrously at the hand of an Angel and being strengthened by this food walked for forty days and forty nights. He beheld God on Mount Horeb, as far as this is possible for human nature, and foretold the destruction of the house of Ahab and the death of his son Ohozias. And, as for the two captains of fifty that were sent by the king, he burned them for their punishment, bringing fire down from Heaven. He divided the flow of the Jordan and with his disciple Elisseus passed through as it were on dry land. Finally, Elias was suddenly snatched away by a fiery chariot in the year 895 B.C. and ascended as though into heaven, whither God most certainly translated him alive, as He did Enoch (Gen. 5:24; IV Kings 2: 11). Later, Elias appeared with Christ on Mount Tabor, which is commemorated on August 6 as the Holy Transfiguration. Message from Father George ST. MARKELLA OF CHIOS Today, we will commemorate Saint Markella of Chios, a few days early, with a reception in the Hellenic Cultural Center. Everyone is invited to attend upon the dismissal from the Divine Liturgy. Saint Markella is an example of a Christian, who sought to please God in the way that she lived her life. She was a student of her Bible and a young woman of prayer. Her mother was a Christian woman, who raised Markella to love the Lord and follow after His ways. After her mother died, her pagan father, influenced by the workings of the Devil, began to make inappropriate advances toward his daughter. Markella knew this was wrong and tried to escape the immoral ways of her father. In her attempt to run away from him, she was struck down by an arrow and began to bleed on the rocks by the shore. After praying to God for a way to escape, a chasm opened in the rocks where she tried to hide, but the hole in the rock only covered her lower body. When the father caught up with her, he killed her and threw her head into the sea. Saint Markella indeed provides us with an example of how we Christians are called to lead our lives. She knew the teachings of our Lord because she was a woman of prayer and read her Bible. She knew from her mother s teaching that the immoral advances and a life of sin was inappropriate for a Christian. As she rejected the sinfulness of her own father, she was trying to be closer to God our Father. Indeed, this is an extreme situation, but it offers a teaching for all Christians as we learn from Luke 10:25-28: On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life? What is written in the Law? he replied. How do you read it? He answered, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind ; and, Love your neighbor as yourself. You have answered correctly, Jesus replied. Do this and you will live. We are encouraged to live a life in Christ and to follow his commandments, and we will receive His promise that we will live. So, as we commemorate Saint Markella (July 22), remember that she was trying to escape the evil with which her father was infected. She was a woman of prayer. She knew the teachings of the Lord by reading her Holy Bible regularly and allowing the teachings of the Lord from the Holy Bible to guide her steps in life, keeping away from evil and seeking the comfort and protection of God.

For with His Arm the Lord has worked power. He trampled death under foot by means of death; and He became the firstborn from the dead. From the maw of Hades He delivered us; and He granted the world His great mercy. Apolytikion of the Holy Fathers Plagal Tone 4 Most glorified art You, O Christ our God, Who has established our Fathers as luminous stars upon the earth, and through them did guide us all to the true Faith. O Most Merciful One, glory be to You. Apolytikion of the Saint Tone 4 Your own ewe-lamb cries to You loudly, O Jesus, and she says, "For my Bridegroom do I long, and seeking You I now contend; and I am crucified and buried with You in Your baptism. I suffer for Your sake, that I may reign with You. I die for You that I may also live in You. Accept me as an unblemished sacrifice as I offer myself to You with love." At her entreaties and intercessions, save our souls, O Merciful Lord. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. O Loving One, glory to You. Kontakion Tone 2 Protector of Christians, champion undefeated, mediator most sure with our creator, disregard not the voice of prayer of sinners, but come quickly in your goodness, to help us who cry out to you with faith: Be swift to intercede, make haste to supplicate, O Theotokos, protector always of those who honor you.

THE EPISTLE Titus 3:8-15 Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous. Blessed are they whose transgressions have been forgiven. TITUS, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greeting to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen. THE GOSPEL Matthew 5:14-19 The Lord said to his disciples, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."
