SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS MEETING Since several Sunday School staff members were unable to attend the meeting last week, Sunday School Director Patrick Latour asks all Sunday School teachers, prospective teachers, and assistants to attend the rescheduled meeting after church services today, Sunday, July 19, in the upstairs Common Area. Teachers and assistants are still needed for the coming school year. Please think of persons, who would be suitable for this position, and contact Sunday School Director Patrick Latour with your suggestions. Message from Father George THE LIFE OF SAINT MARKELLA Today, we will commemorate Saint Markella of Chios a few days early with a reception in the social hall. Please join us upon the dismissal from the Divine Liturgy. Saint Markella is an example of a Christian, who sought to please God in the way that she lived her life. She was a student of her Bible and was a young woman of prayer. Her mother was a Christian woman, who raised Markella to love the Lord and follow after His ways. After her mother died, her father, a pagan influenced by the workings of the Devil, began to make inappropriate advances toward his daughter. Markella knew this was wrong and tried to escape the immoral ways of her father. In her attempt to run away from him, she was struck down by an arrow. She began to bleed on the rocks by the shore and after praying to God for a way to escape, a chasm broke open in the rocks where she tried to hide. The hole in the rock only covered her lower body, and when the father caught up with her he killed her and threw her head into the sea. Saint Markella indeed provides us with an example of how we Christians are called to lead our lives. She knew the teachings of our Lord because she was a woman of prayer and read her Bible. She knew from her mother s teaching that the immoral advances and a life of sin was inappropriate for a Christian. As she rejected the sinfulness of her own father, she was trying to be closer to God our Father. Indeed, this is an extreme situation, but it offers a teaching for all Christians as we learn from Luke 10:25-28: On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life? What is written in the Law? he replied. How do you read it? He answered, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind ; and, Love your neighbor as yourself. You have answered correctly, Jesus replied. Do this and you will live. We are encouraged to live a life in Christ and to follow his commandments, and we will receive His promise that we will live. So, as we commemorate Saint Markella (July 22), remember that she was trying to escape the evil with which her father was infected. She was a woman of prayer. She knew the teachings of the Lord by reading her Holy Bible regularly and allowing the teachings of the Lord from the Holy Bible to guide her steps in life, keeping away from evil and seeking the comfort and protection of God. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greeting to you. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

6 Nataliya Petrovska-Molsbee Nataliya was born in Odessa, Ukraine. Both of her parents were teachers, and from an early age Nataliya displayed great musical abilities. She began playing piano and singing when she was six years old in the Odessa School of Music. Soon, she became a soloist in the choir that toured France, Poland, Lebanon, as well as the former USSR. In 2005, Nataliya began studying voice at the Musical Academy of Odessa. Upon graduation, she took part in many concerts in Italy and the Ukraine. Her repertoire includes arias of Gershwin, Floyd, Wolf, Puccini, Verdi, Donizetti, Massenett, Saint-Saens, and various Russian and German composers. Currently, Nataliya lives in Long Beach, Mississippi, with her husband Ricky. She teaches vocal and piano at Gulf Coast School of Music and The Next Level School of Art. She also is the pianist at St. Joseph Catholic Church and recently took part in the Music Convention in Chicago. James Harrell James was born in Camp Shelby, Mississippi. He took voice lessons at an early age, and upon hearing his teacher singing opera with another student, he decided that was what he wanted to learn. James enrolled in the Manhattan School of Music in New York, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Arts in Vocal Performing. While he was a student, Lady Bird Johnson visited the Manhattan School of Music and heard him sing in a show. She invited him to do two command performances at the White House for President LBJ. As a classical singer he has performed at many New York venues, including the Town Hall (the oldest classical hall in the U.S.), the Avery Fisher & Alice Tully Concert Halls, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the United Nations. For the last fifteen years, James has taught voice at the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center and in private lessons on the coast of Mississippi. Karen Johnson Henderson A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Karen now resides in Gulfport, Mississippi, with husband Craig. Karen has sung in church choirs most of her adult life. She has sung as a soloist on many occasions, such as weddings. Karen has sung for family and friends to celebrate their family members home goings. Karen says she was humbled and honored to sing the National Anthem for the opening of three Greek Night celebrations hosted by Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Biloxi, Mississippi. She also sang for the Church s Consecration Ceremony. Although Karen loves many types of music, she developed a flare for Gospel music through the encouragement of Mr. Davenport, choir director of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in New Orleans. Karen also credits Judith D Angelo, former choir director of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Gulfport, Mississippi, in helping her give a sharper musical presentation.
