Although Holy Communion and other Sacraments are offered only to baptized and chrismated (confirmed) Orthodox Christians in good standing with the Church, all are invited to receive the Antidoron (blessed bread) from the priest at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. The Antidoron is not a sacrament, but it is reminiscent of the agape feast that followed worship in the ancient Christian Church. 2 The Sunday Epistle Reading Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous. Verse: Blessed are they whose transgressions have been forgiven. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to Titus (3:8-15) Titus, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greeting to you. 3 The Sunday Gospel Reading The Gospel According to Matthew (5:14-19) The Lord said to his disciples, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven." Ἐκ τοῦ Κατὰ Ματθαῖον Εὐαγγελίου τὸ Ἀνάγνωσμα (5:14-19) Εἶπεν ὁ Κὐριος τοῖς ἑαυτοῦ μαθηταῖς Υμεῖς ἐστε τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου. οὐ δύναται πόλις κρυβῆναι ἐπάνω ὄρους κειμένη οὐδὲ καίουσι λύχνον καὶ τιθέασι αὐτὸν ὑπὸ τὸν μόδιον, ἀλλ ἐπὶ τὴν λυχνίαν, καὶ λάμπει πᾶσι τοῖς ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ. οὕτω λαμψάτω τὸ φῶς ὑμῶν ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων, ὅπως ἴδωσιν ὑμῶν τὰ καλὰ ἔργα καὶ δοξάσωσι τὸν πατέρα ὑμῶν τὸν ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς. He is a Ph.D candidate in Counselor Education and Supervision at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He holds a Master of Divinity from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology and a Master of Arts in Community Mental Health Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the State of North Carolina and a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC). As Director of Pre-marital programming, Father Georgiou plans and implements the training of clergy and lay facilitators for the Archdiocesan Journey of Marriage program. He also travels throughout the Metropolis conducting the Journey of Marriage seminar in parishes 4

After that weekend I will be in Greece with the blessing of Metropolitan Alexios. My plans will allow me to visit the cities of Athens, Thessalonika, and Kavala from July 13 to the 24 th. 7 Todays Feast of the holy FATHERS: On the Sunday that falls from the 13th to the 19th of the present month, we chant the Service to the Holy and God-bearing Fathers who came together in the Seven Ecumenical Councils, that is: the First Council, of the 318 Fathers who assembled in Nicaea in 325 to condemn Arius, who denied that the Son of God is consubstantial with the Father; the Fathers of the First Council also ordained that the whole Church should celebrate Pascha according to the same reckoning; the Second Council, of the 150 Fathers who assembled in Constantinople in 381 to condemn Macedonius, Patriarch of Constantinople, who denied the Divinity of the Holy Spirit; the Third Council, of the 200 Fathers who assembled in Ephesus in 431, to condemn Nestorius, Patriarch of Constantinople, who called Christ a mere man and not God incarnate; the Fourth Council, of the 630 who assembled in Chalcedon in 451, to condemn Eutyches, who taught that there was only one nature, the divine, in Christ after the Incarnation, and Dioscorus, Patriarch of Alexandria, who illegally received Eutyches back into communion and deposed Saint Flavian, Patriarch of Constantinople, who had excommunicated Eutyches; the Fifth Council in 553, of the 165 who assembled in Constantinople for the second time to condemn Origen and Theodore of Mopsuestia, the teacher of Nestorius; the Sixth Council in 680, of the 170 who assembled in Constantinople for the third time, to condemn the Monothelite heresy, which taught that there is in Christ but one will, the divine; and the Seventh Council in 787, of the 350 who assembled in Nicaea for the second time to condemn Iconoclasm Γράφει ο Μητροπολίτης Λέρου, Καλύμνου, Αστυπάλαιας Παϊσιος Αγαπητοί μου αδελφοί, Η Αγία μας Εκκλησία, από περάτων έως περάτων της οικουμένης, εορτάζει και πανηγυρίζει σήμερα «εν ιματισμώ διαχρύσω περιβεβλημένη, πεπικοιλμένη», την μνήμη των 318 Θεοφόρων Πατέρων της συνελθούσης στη Νίκαια της Βιθυνίας Πρώτης Οικουμενικής Συνόδου το 325 μ.χ. Οι Άγιοι και Θεοφόροι Εκείνοι Πατέρες, τα Πυξία του Πνεύματος, τα πάγχρυσα στόματα του Λόγου, οι αστέρες οι πολύφωτοι του νοητού στερεώματος, «αποστολικών παραδόσεων, ακριβείς φύλακες», φωτιζόμενοι από το Άγιο Πνεύμα καθόρισαν και περιχαράκωσαν το δόγμα της Θεότητος του Ιησού Χριστού. Με την χάρη του Παναγίου και Τελεταρχικού Πνεύματος, οι Άγιοι Πατέρες, απεκήρυξαν την ψευδώνυμο και κακόδοξο διδασκαλία του κακοδόξου Αρείου, λέγοντες «ποίος σου έσχισε τον χιτώνα Σώτερ; Άρειος σύ είπες». Ο ασεβής και θεομάχος Άρειος, με την κακόδοξο διδασκαλία του «διείλεν τον χιτώνα» του Σωτήρος Χριστού και δίδασκε αντίθετα της διδασκαλίας του Ευαγγελίου και της Μίας Αγίας και Καθολικής Εκκλησίας, θέλοντας να μεταβάλει την θρησκεία της αγάπης και της απολύτρωσης, σε απλό και άγονο φιλοσοφικό σύστημα. Ο παράφρων Άρειος γνώριζε, αλλά δεν ήθελε να πιστέψει ότι, ο Μονογενής Υιός και Λόγος του Θεού ήλθε επί της γης, «μορφή δούλου λαβών» και έγινε ο Θεός άνθρωπος, έγινε Θεάνθρωπος δια να σώσει τον πλανηθέντα από την αμαρτία άνθρωπο και να επαναφέρει τον άνθρωπο στην αρχαία μακαριότητα, στην αιώνιο ζωή και βασιλεία των ουρανών. Η Μία, Αγία, Καθολική και Αποστολική Εκκλησία, πολλές φορές, βρέθηκε εν μέσω φοβερών κυμάτων «εκλυδωνίζετο, αλλ ου κατεποντίζετο», κατά τον Ιερό Χρυσόστομο. Και αυτή την φορά, με την χάρη του Παναγίου Πνεύματος, το 7

8 Οποίο συνέχει και συγκροτεί τον θεσμό της Εκκλησίας, ενίκησε νίκη ένδοξο κατά του Αρείου και των ομοφρόνων του. Η Εκκλησία είναι ακατάλυτος και αλάθητος, διότι κινείται και κατευθύνεται «εις πάσαν την αλήθειαν» από το Άγιο Πνεύμα και τον Ιδρυτή Της, το Εσφαγμένον Αρνίον της Αποκαλύψεως. Οι Άγιοι Πατέρες, των οποίων την ετήσιο μνήμη σήμερα εορτάζουμε στην ξακουστή πόλη της Νίκαιας, μία για πάντα απέκοψαν την άθεο διδασκαλία του ασεβή Αρείου και συνέταξαν τα επτά πρώτα άρθρα του Συμβόλου της Πίστεως, το οποίο είναι το σύμβολο της αληθείας, το σύμβολο του φωτός, το σύμβολο της Ορθοδοξούσης Εκκλησίας, που είναι η βάση και το θεμέλιο δια την αιώνιο ζωή και θεία μακαριότητα του ανθρωπίνου γένους. Χωρίς την διδασκαλία αυτή είναι αδύνατη για τον άνθρωπο η σωτηρία, η απόκτηση της αιωνίου ζωής και τούτο διότι ο Ιησούς Χριστός, ο Μονογενής Υιός και Λόγος του Θεού, είναι το μόνο μέσο της σωτηρίας μας. Αυτός δίδαξε την αλήθεια και έχυσε το Πανάγιο Αίμα Του επάνω στο Σταυρό του Μαρτυρίου Του. Αυτός άπλωσε τα χέρια Του επάνω στο Σταυρό και ένωσε τα διεστώτα, ένωσε Θεό και άνθρωπο και αναγέννησε τον πλανηθέντα άνθρωπο, ο Θεάνθρωπος Ιησούς, «ο δρακί έχων την πάσαν κτίσιν». Ναί, ο Θεάνθρωπος Ιησούς, ο Υιός της Παρθένου Μαρίας, έγινε άνθρωπος από άπειρο αγάπη προς τον άνθρωπο και απεκάλυψε στους ανθρώπους τον Θεό, τον Δημιουργό του παντός, τον Οποίο δόξασε επί της γής και έδωκε στους γνήσιους μαθητές Του,«πάν ό δέδωκε αυτώ» ο Πατέρας Του, την αιώνιο ζωή, «και εχαρίσατο αυτοίς ζωήν την αιώνιον». Ω! αγάπη, Ω! αγαθότητα, Ω! ευσπλαχνία, Ω! θεϊκή συγκατάβαση. Ο Μονογενής Υιός και Λόγος του Θεού εκουσίως επάνω στο Σταυρό του μαρτυρίου Του τελείωσε το έργο της σωτηρίας του ανθρωπίνου γένους και χάρισε στον άνθρωπο την αιώνιο ζωή που είναι το τέλμα παντός χριστιανού. Η αιώνιος ζωή είναι το Μέγα Δείπνο, είναι ο κεκρυμμένος θησαυρός, είναι ο πολύτιμος μαργαρίτης που πρέπει να ζητά, να αποκτήσει, και να γευθεί ο κάθε άνθρωπος, ο κάθε χριστιανός. Η πίστη στην αιώνιο ζωή και μακαριότητα ενίσχυσε τους μάρτυρες και αγίους της Εκκλησίας μας, οι οποίοι «ελιθάσθησαν, επρίσθησαν, επειράσθησαν, εν φόνω μαχαίρας απέθανον». Η πίστη στην αιώνιο ζωή και μακαριότητα, παραμυθεί και ενισχύει τους πιστούς στις θλίψεις τους και στα βάσανα της πολυμόχθου και πρόσκαιρης αυτής ζωής. Η πίστη στην αιώνιο ζωή και μακαριότητα παρακινεί τους αληθινούς χριστιανούς να εργαστούν με αυτοθυσία και αγάπη υπέρ των αδελφών τους και να βοηθούν τους πάσχοντες, τους ασθενείς, τους φτωχούς κάνοντας την Ορθοδοξία Ορθοπραξία. Αγαπητοί μου αδελφοί, Ζούμε και κινούμαστε σε έναν κόσμο πρόσκαιρο και μάταιο, πάντες είμαστε «ξένοι και παρεπίδημοι», σήμερα ή αύριο φεύγουμε εκ του κόσμου τούτου και μπαίνουμε στο τάφο. Πέρα του τάφου υπάρχει η αληθινή πατρίδα μας, η αιώνια πόλη, η αιώνιος βασιλεία την οποία ετοίμασε ο Θεός, «τοις αγαπώσι». Ας φροντίσουμε λοιπόν να γίνουμε άξιοι πολίτες της ουρανίου βασιλείας, και τώρα που έχουμε καιρό ας εργαζόμαστε το αγαθό, ας μελετούμε το θείο νόμο και ας πράττουμε έργα καρποφόρα, έργα αγάπης, μιμούμενοι τους Αγίους Πατέρες, οι οποίοι δι έργων και λόγων έγιναν οι διαπρύσιοι κήρυκες της Ορθοδόξου ημών πίστεως, αλλά και μέτοχοι της μακαρίας και αιωνίου ζωής.
