(Of course, Liturgy WILL be celebrated at St. Haralambos on Sept 14.) OUR SISTER CHURCH of St. Sophia in Elgin invites you to Great Vespers on Friday evening, September 16 and Liturgy on Sept. 17 in honor of their parish Feastday. (Liturgy will NOT be celebrated at St. Haralambos on Sept 17.) CONGRATULATIONS! THREE SISTER PAR- ISHES ARE CELEBRATING THEIR 100TH AN- NIVERSARY! Three Greek Orthodox communities in our area are celebrating their 100th Anniversaries this fall! Of course there will be Liturgies, albums and banquets, and you are invited to support and participate in these celebrations: Joliet-All Saints Church is celebrating its 100th Anniversary on September 18. There will be a Banquet that evening at the Carlisle in Lombard, IL. For more information, call 815-722-1727. SACRAMENTS AND BLESSINGS MINISTRY TO PERSONS WHO ARE SICK-We urge Orthodox Christians who would like to receive Holy Sacraments but are unable to attend church (hospitalized or at home) to contact the church office so Holy Sacraments can be administered to them. If your loved one is hospitalized please call us, even if the illness is not serious! In a wholistic approach to healing and well-being, a visit from the priest can be very positive. Most hospitals do not inform us when they receive patients from our parish. We depend on you! BLESSINGS OF INFANTS Forty days after birth, a child and its mother come to church to receive a 40 Day Blessing, imitating Christ who was presented in the Temple 40 days after He was born. Please call the church office to arrange this blessing. BAPTISMS Please call the church office to schedule Baptisms. Plan ahead! there are some days when Baptisms are not performed. Keep in mind that there should be only one Godparent and that a child is supposed to be given one name when he or she is baptized. WEDDINGS Please arrange an appointment with Fr. Dean at least eight months before the proposed wedding date to allow time for all necessary marriage preparation. CONFESSION Confessions are arranged by appointment. Please call the church office to schedule Confession. MEMORIAL SERVICES Memorial Services are offered for the eternal rest of persons who have fallen asleep in the Lord. Customarily, these services are offered at 40 days, at 6 months, at 1 year and at 3 years. When three years have passed, the departed are more properly remembered on the Saturdays of the Souls. END OF LIFE ISSUES 1 - The Right to a Proper Funeral It is an honor to have a church funeral. When the funeral does not take place at the church it indicates that someone is not in good order. Sometimes out of convenience, we consider omitting a church funeral for our loved ones, not realizing that we are depriving them of their right to be honored. Let us honor our parents and relatives with the respect they deserve! 2 - About Cremation Orthodox Christians believe that in the General Resurrection, our bodies and souls will be restored to each other. Cremation is the deliberate desecration and destruction of what God has made, and is viewed as the denial of the Resurrection. In cases where there is intention for the body of a deceased person to be cremated, thus choosing to disregard our understanding of the Resurrection, the honor of a church funeral is not given, either in the church, or the funeral home or any other place. 2016 STEWARDSHIP YOU BELONG HERE! 2016 STEWARDSHIP UPDATE As of August 29, 578 families have committed $ 308,902

HOLY TAXIARHAI AND SAINT HARALAMBOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 7373 CALDWELL AVENUE, NILES, ILLINOIS 60714 PHONE: 847/647-8880 From Father Dean Dear Friends and Stewards, September 2016 I would like to express a huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped our 2016 Greek Food Fest be such a big hit! This year s Fest appears to have been our most successful ever, with a net income over $200,000! Our Fest organizers worked hard, the weather was beautiful and we had a lot of help for set up. I especially would like to thank the many, many young people who came and worked so hard. Our Fest has grown to a great scale, and it takes SO MANY people to make it work! It is not possible to thank everyone individually, but we are grateful to everyone who helped in some way, either before, during or after! You may enjoy our Fest photographs on pages 1 and 9 (thank you, John Zouras). Especially we would like to thank those parishioners and families who scheduled their summer vacation around the Festival so that they could help. This was greatly appreciated! Of course, we need to remind ourselves that the purpose of our Fest (and everything else we do) is to serve and glorify God. I believe it was a very joyful and rewarding experience for us to come and work together as one family during the Fest. We are so excited about starting off this new church/school year! Let us all be hopeful that it will be a year of progress for our community and spiritual growth for each of us personally! Two big holidays in September are the Birth of the Theotokos on September 8, and the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14 (a day of strict fasting). Plan to attend church for Divine Liturgy on these days! We are happy to invite you to a new series called Introduction to the Greek Orthodox Liturgy on Tuesday nights at 7:30, beginning September 20. All are welcome to study share and discuss this central act of worship in the Greek Orthodox tradition! All our Greek school programs are preparing to welcome back our children. The Saturday Greek begins on September 10; the Afternoon Greek begins September 16, and the morning Kindergarten/Preschool starts classed on September 15! We need to mention how grateful we are to the parents who are active in the PTA programs; these programs are essential for the good functioning of our schools! Please register your children! Our Sunday teachers can t wait to see the children and begin sharing their faith and love, as well. Please give your children the blessing and opportunity to learn and experience their Greek Orthodox faith through their participation in this program! (I know, I know; it means bringing them to church faithfully every Sunday morning. But they are worth it!) Sunday begins September 11. Our Philoptochos Membership Dinner will take place on Tuesday evening, September 26. Every lady in our parish is invited to join this important and dynamic ladies organization! Our annual Golf Outing will take place on September 22 (see the flyer on pg 6). Gather your friends and register. You can expect to have a wonderful time! Our New Church Year is starting off with an explosion of programs, activities and fun. We have so much to be grateful for! COMMUNITY NEWS STEWARDSHIP 2016! What does your church mean to you? What does your church offer to you? What keeps the doors open to serve your needs? How important is Baptism, Holy Communion, forgiveness and the many other blessings you derive from your church? What gives the church the fuel to power its activities and programs? A N S W E R: Your STEWARDSHIP! These are the questions we should ask when we determine our level of stewardship every year! Everyone should have a different stewardship level from everyone else, and every year it should change according to our means and our love! Our stewardship level should be an amount that reflects our growing love of God and our appreciation for the blessings and benefits we derive from our Church. If you have not yet made your 2016 commitments, please do so. There is no minimum, but true stewardship means heartfelt giving in proportion to our resources and income. You belong here! INTRODUCTION TO THE GREEK ORTHODOX LITURGY You are invited to a special series of presentations to study the Divine Liturgy, beginning Tuesday night, September 20 at 7:30. The study is based on a small book about the Liturgy, written by Fr. Demetrios Treantafeles, and the sessions will include abundant discussion and Q&A. Join us! OUR GARAGE WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE A fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon, August 17, in our garage at the rear of our property. This garage is used to store equipment that we use throughout the year, such as our Easter platform and our snowblower, and also Food Fest equipment, including loukoumathes machines, electric panels and wiring, fencing and much more. Note: When our new building is complete, we will not need a garage. Time to get busy! (Many have not yet pledged to support our Expansion Project!)

ST HARALAMBOS OUTREACH MINISTRY The Outreach Committee of St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church wishes to thank all the people who volunteered their service to the Committee s Bessie s Table project. In the two years we have been working at this soup kitchen, almost 100 Saint Haralambos people have volunteered! Bessie s Table provides a hot home cooked meal to individuals and families in need. We cook and serve one Monday a month except for August. Other Outreach Committee projects include: a) Annual Thanksgiving Dinner prepared and served on Thanksgiving Day for members of our community who do not have a place to eat for the holiday, b) Feed Our Starving Children a volunteer opportunity for young people in our church community ages 8-18 to do community service along with parents and adults to help pack food for malnourished children around the world, c) Meals on Wheels once a month, volunteers prepare and deliver meals to people in our community who are ill, homebound, elderly, or who would welcome companionship due to limited mobility, and d) Food donations to the Niles Food Pantry. We look forward to working with any new volunteers for any of the projects the Outreach Committee supports. Please feel free to contact Christine Blackaby at ChrysoKB@gmail.com to volunteer for any of our projects. We also welcome new members to our Outreach Committee. For details, contact Christine Blackaby at the above e-mail address or John Pierce or any other members of the Outreach Committee. Look to future Visions for more information on our Outreach projects!
