SPYRIDON HELLENIC ORTHODOX CHURCH 12307 S. RIDGELAND AVE. PALOS HEIGHTS, IL 60463 WWW. SAINT- SPYRIDON.ORG HAPPY NEW YEAR 2013!!! Hymn of Note A new year has dawned with many hopes and aspirations for all of us. I pray that our good Lord will grant all that is beneficial to our souls, to our community, and to all of humanity. The New Year also finds us in the midst of our study of hymnology, at the fifth eothinon which speaks to us of Christ s journey to Emmaus with the apostles Luke and Cleopas. The hymn is the following: How wise, O Christ, are your judgements! You made Peter understand your Resurrection by the grave-clothes alone, but journeying with Luke and Cleopas you talked, and as you talked you did not at once reveal yourself. And you were reproached with being only a stranger in Jerusalem and not sharing in her final counsels. But as the one who disposes all things for the profit of his fashioning, you unfolded the prophecies about yourself and in the blessing of bread you made yourself known to them, whose hearts even before this had burned for knowledge of you. They also were already proclaiming to your assembled Disciples your Resurrection. Through which have mercy on us. (You can hear the hymn chanted in Greek at http://www.ec-patr.net/en/sounds_htm/ eothina.htm) Following the Resurrection, we consistently witness that Christ was not immediately recognized by those who knew Him. We see that Mary Stewardship Sunday January 20th, 2013

Athletics And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Madgalene, at the tomb, thought Him to be the gardener. Peter and the disciples did not recognize Him when He stood at the shore while they were fishing. Now Luke and Cleopas, two of the seventy apostles, did not recognize Jesus as He journeyed and spoke to with them. It seems that the Resurrected Christ, even though He was present in His resurrected Body still bearing the marks of His crucifixion, had the ability to conceal Himself from recognition. However, He also had the ability to reveal Himself in the manner He wished to do so. To Mary, He revealed Himself when He called her by her name. To the disciples who were fishing, He miraculously filled their nets with fish, reminding them of the first time He called them to His service, and that is how they recognized Him. To Luke and Cleopas, He revealed Himself to them in the act of breaking bread. This final act of concealment and recognition is the focus our fifth eothinon hymn. As the Resurrected Jesus joined Luke and Cleopas on the road to Emmaus, a town not too far from Jerusalem, they thought Him to be a stranger. This stranger seemed ignorant of the events that had transpired concerning Jesus, and so they told Him. Jesus responded with a whole discourse about the prophecies and psalms that spoke of the Messiah and how He was meant to be crucified and resurrected for the salvation of mankind. I can t imagine what an incredible and insightful bible study that must have been. To all that have ever attended a bible study discussion, a lecture, or heard a sermon, none could possibly come close to the eloquence and true knowledge that was given by Jesus to Luke and Cleopas as He opened to them the meaning of all the scriptures. Yet, they still did not recognize Him. They were, however, thirsty for more. And when Jesus pretended to move on ahead of them, they pressed upon Him to stay and continue to speak tp them. His words had created this desire in them to seek more insight and instruction. Jesus stayed. Their hearts were burning with the knowledge that He was giving them, and yet they did not recognize Him. Finally, they sat down at the table, Jesus took some bread, prayed over it, and broke it, and gave it them. And then their eyes were opened. At the breaking of the bread, at what we know today as the Eucharist, or Holy Communion, it was at that time that Luke and Cleopas recognized the Resurrected Jesus. The lesson here is the following. In the life of the Church, we may experience the presence of Jesus Christ in many different ways. We experi- 2 The Voice
ence Him in prayer, in acts of mercy and compassion toward the least of the brethren, in bible studies and spiritual gatherings. Through these actions, the highest we can achieve is a desire for the presence of Christ. Through prayer, study, and good works, one can only achieve the desire to see Christ. Once this desire is present it cannot only be filled through the sacrament of- Holy Communion. Through this sacrament of partaking of His body and blood Jesus chooses to reveal Himself to a willing and pure heart. Unique within Orthodoxy is this experience of a sacramental unity with Christ. He becomes part of us and we become a part of Him, and thus He is revealed to us. While prayer, bible study, and acts of mercy, are indeed necessary to fuel a desire within us for our Risen Lord, it is up to Christ, in His way, in His breaking of His own Body that He chooses to make Himself seen and recognizable as He did for Luke and Cleopas. The two apostles, Luke and Cleopas, as soon as their eyes were opened, they could see Jesus no more. However, they rose up and traveled back to Jerusalem, even though it was the middle of the night. They found the disciples and declared to them that they had seen the Christ risen from the dead. We too, when Jesus is revealed to us, pray that we will be inspired to declare the Resurrection to all the world, so that all should come to recognize Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Amen. Fr. Tilemahos Alikakos I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM Dear faithful of Saint Spyridon, STEWARDSHP How do we bear fruit for Jesus Christ? We bear fruit when we follow His example and love, serve and support the Church which is His Body. We bear fruit through generosity and devotion, especially in the stewardship of His blessings in our life. Bearing fruit in the world is the visible result of our abiding in Christ. Just as the vine bears fruit only through its branches, so Jesus has chosen to work in the world through us. We are the members of His Body. We are the branches through which the True Vine must bear fruit. We bear fruit when we serve and support God and His Church. This past year we have expanded our ministry programs at Saint Spyridon s in the areas of Youth, Seniors, and Education. In the coming year we expect to grow all our worthy ministries through your continued support. Giving to His Church is a way to thank God for His grace and generosity. Before completing the enclosed Commitment Card and Information Form, prayerfully consider the commitment you are making. A check mailed to the church is most meaningful when accompanied by your presence, by your willingness to serve, and by your prayers. Finally, I invite you to be with us at Saint Spyridon for our Stewardship Sunday, on January 20 th, 2013, at which time we will offer our Stewardship Commitment Cards in support of our parish ministries. In addition, we will learn more about our parish, our leadership and our service to the community. Just like the boy who offered his five loaves and two fish, we offer what we have however great or small our gift. If we do this prayerfully and in humility, God will take our gifts and multiply them in order to feed His people. I offer you my thanks for your dedication to our parish and your participation in Christ s work of salvation. Yours in Christ, Rev. Fr. Tilemahos Alikakos STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY SUNDAY, JANUARY 20TH, 2013 All of us are called to offer our Stewardship Commitment on Sunday, January 20th and show our support for our church ministries and mission. In the next few issues of the VOICE we will highlight the lives of the saints that have been donated to our Iconography Project. With the prayers of our patron Saint Spyridon, their icons will soon be adorning our church edifice. Miracle of Saint Spyridon When Saint Spyridon returned to Cyprus [after the 1st Ecumenical Council], he learned with great sadness that his daughter Irene had died. The faithful bishop accepted this trial with exemplary patience and endurance. A few days later a woman came to him with tears and asked for a precious thing, a jewel. It was given to his daughter to watch shortly before she died. The saint arose and carefully searched throughout the house to find the missing object. Unfortunately, it was not found anywhere. Then without any hesitation he went to the grave of his daughter. When he arrived, he offered a fervent prayer, and then, after he bowed over the grave, he asked the dead daughter, as if she were alive, to tell him where she had put the object. Immediately a voice from the depths of the tomb was heard to say: -My Father, I have it hidden in that certain place. Then the Saint said: - Sleep, my daughter, in peace. Sleep until the day when the Lord will raise us all in the General Resurrection. Those who were there were shaken and were left speechless. They reflected on the strength with which the All-good God endowed this simple but holy bishop. The good shepherd, who would do everything for the benefit and service of Christians." Apolytikion O Father, God-bearer, Spyridon, you were proven a champion and Wonder Worker of the First Ecumenical Council. You spoke to the girl in the grave and turned the serpent to gold. And, when chanting your prayers, most sacred One, angels ministered with you. Glory to Him who glorified you; glory to Him who crowned you; glory to Him who, through you, works healing for all.
