Greek Community Care Centre Development of a Greek Community within Charleswood Care Centre May 27/15 Goal: to develop a grouping of Greek Residents within the care centre. Ideally, with a large enough group there would be the opportunity to re-design one unit for the Greek Residents to include an adjoining lounge and dining area. Considerations: Menu and diet with opportunities to enjoy traditional Greek foods Celebration of significant Greek Orthodox events: Christmas, Easter and Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (August 15th) Opportunities for the priest from the Greek Orthodox Church to visit and provide services if desired. Opportunities for members of the Greek Community to visit with several Residents together in a group setting. Opportunities for members of the Greek community to come and provide entertainment and share other aspects of the culture with other Residents and staff to help the larger care centre population understand the Greek culture more fully. Tours for members of the Greek community to become familiar with the care centre. All of the above considerations are possible now within our current set-up and structure. This would help to build the sense of understanding and unity with the Greek community. Next steps: Members of the Seniors Group to visit the care centre to become more familiar with the structure and set up. They will be the main contact for the day to day planning going forward. Shelley Ireland, Social Worker from the care centre will be the primary contact to discuss placement of residents at the care centre and to provide tours. Linda Sundevic, Executive Director will be the primary contact for the development of a grouping of Residents and discussions of a partnership to develop common and dining space (construction). Christos Argiriou will be the contact if there are questions or concerns. As discussed on this date, Linda Sundevic, Executive Director 5501 Roblin Boulevard, Charleswood Care Centre Phone: 204-833-3660 7

Thoughts from our Parish Priest Someone once said that God must really love ordinary people--he made so many of them! In this day of media stars, sports heroes, authorities, experts and personalities, it is reassuring to know that there is one place where the ordinary person will always be loved and needed--in the church. Although the church welcomes everyone, the truth is that the rich and worldly are not generally receptive to the Gospel. Christ found that it was the common people who heard him gladly. St. Paul also observed that not many of those who were worldly, mighty, or of noble birth accepted the Christian calling. (l Cor. 1:26). A general once wisely observed that an army could more easily do without its generals than it could without its foot soldiers. Wars are not won by generals, but by privates. In exactly the same way, the common ordinary Christians are the very backbone of our parish. Our own congregation has its share of benefactors, and people of great prominence and accomplishment in the community. We are proud of each of them and thank God for them. At the same time, however, we need to admit that if the work of the Lord is to be done, and if the Gospel is to be perpetuated, it will be the ordinary Christians who will accomplish the task. In thinking back over the time that I have served this church, I can think of many examples of ordinary Christians who served God in extra ordinary ways. They sing in our choirs, teach in our Church School, wash pots and pans during our festivals. The work that they offer so willingly is rarely publicly acknowledged. But their work is precious and priceless, and their reward in God s kingdom will be great indeed. Perhaps we hold back because we think we are ordinary and have nothing to offer. Nothing could be farther from the truth! In Matthew 25:14-30, we learn that there is no shame in having limited talents. Rather, the sin is in not using the talent that God has given. The contribution that we consider small is badly needed. We shouldn t be afraid to offer our time and talents to our community and church. 8

Thoughts from our Parish Priest 9

Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion. To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. Τhe priests are here to serve you. Your cooperation in following these regulations will help us greatly in offering you assistance in all your spiritual needs. 13

Church Iconography Program Beloved in Christ, In this bulletin you will find the program of our iconography, as well as a sample of what the icons will look like. On the page with the icons, the top layer is the New Testament icons, which will be put up on the right side of the church (as you face the Altar). The bottom layer is the Old Testmanent icons, which will be put up on the left side of the church. The theme is Promise and Fulfillment, and it depicts the promises given by God in the Old Testament, and the parallel, or fulfillment of that promise in the New Testament. The icons that have not been crossed out are the ones still available. These icons will be installed on the top halves of the side walls of our church. We are also installing icons of individuals saints along the lower halves of the side walls of the church. There is no program for these icons, meaning that each donor can choose the saint to be depicted (as long as it hasn t been donated or reserved painted already). I can give you some suggestions if you d like. Finally, we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, as the current ones have been aged and darkened. This is the list of the icons needing replacement on the Iconostasis: - The Annunciation of the Theotokos - The Presentation of the child Jesus to the Temple - The Raising of Lazarus from the dead - Doubting Thomas - The Ascension of Christ - The Holy Pentecost The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9,500.00. The price for an individual saint (lower half of the walls) is $2,500.00. The price for the icons on the Iconostasis is $2,500.00 You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church. We have also had people get together and donate an icon as a group. If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact me. In the Resurrected Christ, Fr. Kosta Tsiolas 18

CYPRIOT ASSOCIATION 18 th International Conference of Immigrant Cypriots 25-27 August, 2015, Lefkosia, Cyprus Brief Report Kyriacos Hatzipanayis, our Association s former president, had recently been sanctioned by the Cypriot Federation of Canada (CFC) to represent Canada at the above noted conference. The following is a brief report he prepared by him on this conference. Tuesday, 25 August 2015 Following introductory remarks by the General Manager of the Office responsible for Cypriots Immigrants and Repatriated Cypriots (Leonidas Markidis), greetings were extended to all delegates and invited guests by the Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Chair of the Presidency Committee for Humanitarian and Cypriot Immigrant Affairs, the presidents of POMAK, PSEKA and NEPOMAK, the General Manager of the Secretariat responsible for Hellene Immigrants (Michalis Kokkinos), the President of the Cypriot Parliament and President Anastasiadis. With the exception of the address delivered by the young female president of NEPOMAK (Ms. Antonia Savvidi), which was very emotional and a breath of fresh air, I found all other addresses to be very dry and repetitious. All government presenters emphasized the important role Cypriots and Cypriot organizations abroad can play concerning the Cyprus problem and economy. The President is very optimistic a solution to the Cyprus problem can be found as long as the negotiations continue ad no time constraints imposed on the Cypriot Government. A networking reception hosted by the Cypriot Foreign Minister ensued. Wednesday, 26 August 2015 The conference started with a report from the President of POMAK. Unfortunately, the report focused entirely on problems encountered by Cypriots in the UK, a fact which was criticized by many delegates as it was not inclusive of the state of affairs of the other POMAK member federations. A discussion took place as to whether POMAK should continue collecting membership fees from its members and what to do with the money presently in the account. A suggestion was made to spend the money to strengthen the needy federations so that they can contribute effectively to the goals and objective of POMAK. It was resolved, however, that it is prestigious for POMAK to continue having a healthy account and that the money can be strategically utilized within the POMAK s mandate. A discussion ensued whether the Cypriot Federation of Lebanon could be a full-fledged member of POMAK. 27

CYPRIOT ASSOCIATION To this end, it was decided to grant an observer status to the federation this year and revisit the federation s request for full POMAK membership next year. Subsequently, the leaders of all Cypriot political parties addressed the delegates for the duration of six minutes each. As expected, they all agreed to disagree on the major issues confronting Cyprus. The delegates tactfully suggested to all leaders to try to have a common line when dealing with foreign officials and media, as divisiveness will undermine the national efforts for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, it will deter foreign investment etc. Cyprus Foreign Affairs Minister provided an update of the negotiations with the Turkish Cypriots with no breaking news: all information shared with the delegates had already been covered by the local press. The only news that is worth mentioning is that the Turkish Cypriot negotiators have accepted the ratio of 4:1 as the population base for Cyprus once a solution is reached (1 Turkish Cypriot for every 4 Greek Cypriots). As well, if Turkish Cypriots choose to live in free Cyprus (in the South), the Government of Cyprus is obliged to return to them all property they might own in the South no later than six months. The update provided by Cyprus Minister of Energy was not any different, as the information shared was based on well known facts reported by the press and/or posted on the internet such as the alliance between Cyprus, Israel, Greece and Egypt and the continued negotiations to supply natural gas to Egypt and Jordan from the Aphrodite field. Also, reference was made to the discovery of huge hydrocarbon reserves within the Egyptian Exclusive Economic Zone neighbouring the Aphrodite field, which presents an opportunity for joint ventures between Cyprus and Egypt. Minister Lakkotripis spoke also about the drop of tourism from Russia (-17%) and clarified that this decline has been counteracted with a corresponding increase of travellers from the UK and Germany. He also noted that Cyprus did not do very well either with the Northern European countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark). Nonetheless, overall tourism visits are expected to increase by 5.5% in 2015, but tourism receipts are expected to be lower than 2014, a fact which is largely attributed to the 17% decrease in Russian visits: apparently the average Russian tourist spends much more as compared to the other visitors. Cyprus Minister of Finance is very optimistic that the Cypriot economic crisis will be ended soon and that growth is expected to start in early 2016. He also explained that the Government of Cyprus will introduce legislation and certain measures that will facilitate foreign investment and the establishment of companies/ corporations in key sectors of the economy. The next conference has bee.n scheduled for August 23, 2016. 28

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS GREEK FOLK COSTUMES Our community prides itself on having an extensive collection of authentic Greek folk costumes. These costumes are worn by our community groups for dance performances, as well as at events while representing our community. We would like to expand this collection, particularly the costumes for our youth. Currently, we have a limited number of costumes that will fit this age group, and we have an increasing interest from the kids to wear costumes during their dance performances. If you have a costume that you would like to donate to the community for use by community groups, such as Kefi and Greek School, please drop them off in the church office with the Office Administrator. All sizes and regions are welcome! If you require a costume to be picked up, or would like to sponsor the purchase of a child s Greek folk costume, please contact Agapi Katrakis at 204-588-4870 or agapim@gmail.com.
