HOLY TAXIARHAI AND SAINT HARALAMBOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 7373 CALDWELL AVENUE, NILES, ILLINOIS 60714 PHONE: 847/647-8880 From Father Dean September 2015 Dear Friends and Stewards, The New Year begins! September first is the official beginning of the church year (called The Indiction ), and it is not a coincidence that it is the beginning of our activity year as well. The beginning of the year offers a chance to reconnect with God, Faith and Church. As we initiate a new cycle of life, I think we have a great need and opportunity to restore our Orthodox Identity. We are living in a secular world that is becoming increasingly hostile to us from a perspective of faith and conviction. Any disagreement with today s political correctness is not tolerated. All the more reason that we need to examine the Bible, our Faith and our roots, and to reconnect with our faith community! It would be irresponsible to be completely assimilated and absorbed into the secular world without resistance, but to do so requires study, conscience and guts! One strategy is to learn how to live a Liturgical life. By tuning into the church calendar and its holidays, we are guided to a value system that is soundly Orthodox. Of course we have to work and we might miss some church services. But if we make an effort to observe feasts and fasts, to live in communion with God and to get to know Him, an Orthodox Identity and life style will emerge. If we come to the church only for funerals, baptisms, weddings and some big holidays, can we honestly say that we are trying to live closely in communion with God? I don t think so! Let us try to use this new year as a step-off to new life close to God! -- We offer you some opportunities to serve and some opportunities to experience community in the coming days. The Metropolis Philoptochos invites you to their annual Luncheon on September 19 at the Café la Cave. Our St. Haralambos Philoptochos invites you to its Membership Dinner on Monday evening, September 28. Something new and special: our Fall Fiesta on Sunday, September 27 after church services. Chef Grande Jake invites you to taste his special Al Pastor Souvlaki Taco! Mmmm! Plan to join us! Our Outreach Committee has a monthly commitment to Bessie s Table, where meals are provided to the hungry, and they would love to expand their Committee. Call the church office if you can help! Finally, please keep these three dates in mind: Saturday, October 17, for our annual Symposium. This year s topic is The Cross and the Crescent and will offer a fascinating perspective about Christianity and Islam. (See page 4) Godparent Sunday is October 18! Thursday evening, November 5 for an all important General Assembly to discuss and decide the future of our church facility and its expansion! OFF TO COLLEGE Our students are going off to college, and both parents and children are full of questions and expectations as they both make a transition to a new life style. Students will go to Orientation, and parents will also be invited to various orientation activities. The colleges and universities will be absorbed in exciting the students, and equally absorbed in selling their school to the parents. But there are important things that colleges and universities are not likely to speak about during orientation. On such occasions, both students and parents are shown the glossier features of the institution, while more troubling areas are kept in the dark. Parents who are focused may be asking themselves: what are the things that parents and students need to hear about life at the big U? It s best to begin, dear parents and students, by remembering the principle that parents are the primary educators of their children. We know that college students aren t children, and they need to experience independence and responsibility for themselves. Parents at this stage don t enjoy the same authority they enjoyed in the past, and must strive for a good balance between loving care and letting go. But the principle is still worth recalling, if only to underscore the fact that the college or university is no more and no less than a contract worker in the educational enterprise. You hire a painter to help paint your house, and if he s no good you fire him and look for another. Go ahead and take the same attitude with regard to your school. While the school itself will want you to consider it your family from the moment you step onto the verdant quadrangle, you will remember that the term family, even by extension, implies trust. And that trust must be earned. Second, keep in mind that college is not meant to be a LaLa Land in which students enjoy the right to party or otherwise act like animals, as the weekend reward for five days of hard work. The point of these four years is to bring the moral, intellectual, and spiritual formation begun by your parents to the point where you can contribute to society in a constructive, independent way. And at quite a substantial cost please bear that in mind. At the same time, parents, your child s college career is not an opportunity for you to relive your glory days. Yes, it s fun to put on the spirit wear, attach the school decals to the rear window, and tailgate before the football games. But your primary role in this adventure is not to play, but to make sure the institution is helping form the immortal soul of your child. Third, dear students and parents, be encouraged that the faculty of your school, upon whom so much depends in the coming years, includes some very good, if not exemplary, people. You will doubtless encounter teachers who embody everything that is good and who transform the lives of their students in profoundly positive ways. That said, note well that the faculty of your school also includes those with a very different agenda. A student s values, faith and identity will be challenged by the values of other students and by faculty who encourage questioning those values, sometimes with destructive intentions and results. The university family, in short, is dysfunctional. Thus you will need a very sure guide to help you navigate the minefield of college life so that a real education will be achieved. Have you identified such a person? Who can you turn to at times of confusion and misdirection? Finally, dear students and parents, please be vigilant. In many ways, you and your family will want to assimilate to the environment of your school. But in other ways, you will need to push back and be counter -cultural. The need to identify will be strong, but don t let the t-shirt make you complacent. The disastrous impulses of the secular culture need to be balanced by an understanding of the dignity of the human person and the person s ability to know reality. Wisdom, my friends, is the glorious prize that awaits at the end of the road of these four years. Watch out for the bandits along the roadside, and keep your goal in sight!
