SAINT- SPYRIDON.ORG Hymn of Note For eight days, the disciples remained in hiding, trembling in fear of the Jews who were now getting anxious over rumblings of Jesus having risen from the dead. The risen Lord had already appeared to His disciples, yet they remained silent. Thomas, absent from the Lord s first appearance, was not convinced that Jesus had risen. After all, seeing the fear and doubt in the eyes of his fellow disciples, it is no wonder that Thomas demanded to place his own hand in the print of the nails. It is in this shadow of disbelief that Jesus enters through the closed doors and our hymn of note, the ninth eothinon recounts the encounter. As at the last times you came when it was late on the Sabbath to your friends, O Christ, and you confirm the wonder by a wonder, by your entrance when the doors were shut your Resurrection from the dead. You filled your Disciples with joy and made them partakers of the Holy Spirit; you bestowed on them the authority of the forgiveness of sins and did not abandon Thomas to be drowned in the sea of unbelief. And so grant us also true knowledge and forgiveness of offences, compassionate Lord. Annual Greek Festival July 6th & 7th, 2013

Athletics And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. On the eighth day of the Resurrection, Jesus establishes Sunday as the Lord s day dedicated to the new life beyond the grave. In this eighth day, Jesus dispels all unbelief and Thomas comes to declare Jesus as His Lord and His God. To recognize Him as God was not the most significant statement since even Satan declared Jesus to be God. To recognize Him as His Lord took courage and became a true challenge for all us. If we believe that Jesus is risen, then we must also confess He is our Lord. If we confess Him as our Risen Lord, then, everything that Jesus taught we must accept as the absolute truth. Not one iota, not a dot of the law shall fall victim to modernity, social laxity, relativism, or political correctness. We have no right to be selective or to alter Jesus teachings. If we declare that Christ is Risen, then what follows is the He is our Lord and we are bound by the truth He revealed to us. On the eighth day of the Resurrection, the risen Lord humbles Himself once again and allows the hands of His creation to test the truth of His rising from the dead. For just one soul in doubt, Jesus appears again and addresses every naysayer for generations to come. He calls blessed those who have not seen and yet believed, but through the eyes of Thomas, we have all seen and touched and experienced the resurrection of Christ. The martyrdom of the disciples who witnessed the Risen Lord sealed in blood their testimony. There would follow countless others whose courage and faith should diminish all our doubts to the point where we too can say we have seen and witnessed the Resurrection of Christ. On the eighth day of the Resurrection, Jesus bestows life upon His disciples by empowering them to forgive sins. The reconciliation between men and God that Christ achieved on the Cross allows for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Through this gift of the Holy Spirit the power to forgive sins is given to the Church. Through the disciples and their successors, the bishops and clergy of the Church, the one gift that no man could attain is offered freely: forgiveness of sins and life eternal. Jesus could not wait to bestow this gift of life that was now possible because of the work He accomplished on the cross. On the eighth day of the Resurrection we see the importance and priority Jesus gives to empowering the Church to offer life through the forgiveness of sins. Consequently, while we may equate the church s ministry with works of charity, morality standards, counseling groups, social outreach, life rituals, or cultural functions, the essence of the church never ceases to be the vehicle by which we are offered forgiveness of sins and life eternal. All other functions of the church receive meaning only if the faithful who perform them are first and foremost the benefactors of this gift of eternal life through the forgiveness of sins and participation in the life of the Spirit. In other words, the Church is primarily here for the Divine Liturgy and not the fellowship hour. The Church is here to preach confession and repentance and not to conform to political correctness or popular con- 2 The Voice

science. The Church is here to bring children to the experience of Christ through the sacraments and not only to the basketball court or to the soccer field. The Church is here to help us store up wealth of virtues and charity in the kingdom of heaven and not to grab the headlines or likes on Facebook. The Church is here to worship Christ in spirit and in truth and not to compromise, cuddle, and accommodate the famous and powerful, the arrogant and the complacent. The Church is here to transform us into saints and our bodies into relics and not to simply perpetuate a lukewarm or passive ritualism, parochialism or ethnocentrism. The different ministries of our community s life, as wonderful as they are, cannot exist as an end unto themselves. While every ministry of the church is born within the church with the potential to become meaningful and pleasing to God, that can only be achieved when the faithful who participate and support these activities are first seeking the kingdom of God, the forgiveness of their sins and life eternal as the primary goal in their life. The Church exists to sanctify, to make us holy, to lead us to communion with God, to make us inheritors of God s promise of salvation. The beginning and end of everything that we do has to be Risen Lord and the gift He couldn t wait to give to His church: forgiveness of sins and life eternal. Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen! Fr. During high school, he took the opportunity to help around the church while completing his community service hours. John recently graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a bachelor's degree in electrical and computer engineering. John hopes to find a position as an embedded software engineer which would be testing circuitry and programming the code to accompany it. He wishes, Saint Spyridon will help guide him towards fulfilling his life goals of finding a stable job from which he can help Father Athenagoras with his missionary work in Cuba.
