Cutting the Vasilopita The Philoptochos tradition of Cutting the Vasilopita is a major source of funding for the Academy of Saint Basil operating expenses. The event is held in January by every Philoptochos chapter in every parish across the United States, and this year our parish will continue the tradition on Sunday, January 18, 2015, following the Divine Liturgy. What is the meaning of this tradition and how did it begin? For centuries upon centuries parents, grandparents, and godparents have related the following story to Orthodox children about St. Basil and the Vasilopita. One year, during a time of terrible famine, the emperor levied a sinfully excessive tax upon the people of Caesarea. The tax was such a heavy burden upon the already impoverished people that to avoid debtors' prison each family had to relinquish its few remaining coins, as well as pieces of jewelry that included precious family heirlooms. Learning of this injustice against his flock, St. Basil the Great, the archbishop of Caesarea, took up his bishop's staff and the book of the holy Gospels and came to his people's defense by fearlessly calling the emperor to repentance. By God's grace, the emperor did repent! He cancelled the tax and instructed his tax collectors to give St. Basil all of the chests containing the coins and jewelry, which had been paid as taxes by the people of Caesarea. But now, St. Basil was faced with the daunting and impossible task of returning the coins and pieces of jewelry to their rightful owners. After praying for a long time before the icons of Christ and His All-Holy Mother, St. Basil had all the treasures baked into one huge "pita" and called all of the townspeople to prayer at the cathedral. After Divine Liturgy he blessed and cut the "pita, giving a piece to each person. Wondrously, each owner received in his piece of Vasilopita his own valuables. They all joyfully returned home, giving thanks to God, Who delivered them from abject poverty, and to their good and holy bishop St. Basil the Great. Message from Father George Christ is Born Glorify Him! Having just commemorated our father among the Saints, Basil the Great, I am reminded of a letter that Saint Basil wrote to the Patrician Caesaria in Cappadocia in which he recommended receiving the Eucharist daily. He said: "to commune every day, that is to say to partake of the holy Body and Blood of Christ, is good and beneficial since He Himself clearly says, He that eats My flesh and drinks My blood has everlasting life. (John 6:54) For our part, however, we commune four times each week on the Lord's day (Sunday), on the fourth day (Wednesday), on Friday, and on Saturday and on the other days only when there is a commemoration of a saint." The Church recommends that we do receive Holy Communion regularly, but with it comes preparation as well. The question is how do we prepare? In our Orthodox Prayer Books, there are services of preparation that each Orthodox Christian should include in their personal prayer life each time he or she receives the Eucharist. Please know that the four pre-communion prayers in the Holy Cross Liturgy text in our pew book racks are merely a fraction of the services of preparation that the Orthodox Christian should be praying. Also, for the Orthodox Christian to be prepared to receive Holy Communion, he or she must participate in the Sacrament of Holy Confession as well. I pray that in this New Year 2015 we consider participating regularly in the soulcleansing Sacrament of Confession and that we make the time to include the beautiful prayers of preparation before we come forward to receive the Holy Body and Precious Blood of our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ. GET FIT HTC Holy Trinity parishioners and friends are invited to share fellowship while working out in the new GET FIT HTC program scheduled to begin January 10, 2015, at 8:00 am. Resurrection Apolytikion Plagal Tone 1 Let us worship the Word who is unoriginate with the Father and the Spirit, and from a Virgin was born for our salvation, O believers, and let us sing His praise. For in His goodness He was pleased to ascend the Cross in the flesh, and to undergo death, and to raise up those who had died, by His glorious Resurrection. Apolytikion of the Forefeast Tone 4 Be you ready, Zabulon; prepare yourself, O Nephthalim. River Jordan, stay your course and skip for gladness to receive the Sovereign Master, Who comes now to be baptized. O Adam, be you glad with our first mother, Eve; hide not as you did of old in Paradise. Seeing you naked, He has appeared now to clothe you in the first robe again. Christ has appeared, for He truly wills to renew all creation. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. O Loving One, glory to You. Kontakion of the Forefeast Tone 4 In the running waters of the Jordan River, on this day the Lord of all cries to John: Be not afraid and hesitate not to baptize Me, for I am come to save Adam, the first-formed man.

THE EPISTLE 2 Timothy 4:5-8 O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance. To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God. TIMOTHY, my son, always be steady, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. For I am already on the point of being sacrificed; the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. THE GOSPEL Mark 1:1-8 The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, 'Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who shall prepare your way; the voice of one crying in the wilderness: prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.' John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And there went out to him all the country of Judea, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair, and had a leather girdle around his waist, and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
