The newsletter of the Hellenic Community and Orthodox Parish of Auckland Νοέµβριος November 2008 YOUTH DAY Χριστουγεννιάτικη Κοινοτική Εκδήλωση On Saturday morning, December 6, we will have a Divine Liturgy at 10:00 for all our Holy trinity Community, but especially all the youth of our parish. Father Nicholas will take a few moments through the course of the Liturgy - as he did on the Saturday of Lazarus in April - to explain in English what some of the parts of the service symbolize and mean, and will all make a prayer of Confession together before Holy Communion. And we'll celebrate the feats of one of our most beloved Saints - Saint Nicholas! Afterwards, we'll have a Communion Breakfast for all the children. We'll have a fun holiday program. Father Nicholas will explain the differences and respective roles of Saint Nicholas and Saint Basil, and how Santa Claus fits in! And there will be gifts for all! For children of all ages, 1 to 101! Everyone should come, children and grandchildren, and especially parents in between! Finally, we'll talk a little bit about what makes Christmastime special, and what we can do to make it special for others. In doing that - in recognizing the greater joy in giving than in receiving - we will make it more special for ourselves. That evening, Father Nicholas and his family will leave for three weeks in the United States, to celebrate Christmas with his 93-year-old father John Greanias, who has been very ill with cancer some time. Please pray for him! (Father Nicholas will be back on December 28, and we will have holiday Divine Liturgies on the mornings of January 1, 4, 6, and 7, all at 10:00 am. On Sunday, December 21, and on Christmas morning December 25, another priest will be assigned by Archbishop Amfilocheos to be with you for the most joyous Christmas liturgies. Please sing and celebrate well, and please be as generous as you can this season to your fellow man!) ΘΡΗΣΚΕΥΤΙΚΟ ΓΕΓΟΝΟΣ ΤΟΥ ΜΗΝΑ RELIGIOUS EVENT OF THE MONTH Ἀγαπημένοι μου Χριστιανοί ξανασυναντιόμαστε σ αὐτό τό μηνιαῖο κείμενο πού ἡ Ἑλληνική καί Ὀρθόδοξη Κοινότητα τοῦ Auckland εὐγενικά φιλοξενεί στό ἐνημερωτικό φυλλάδιο της γιά νά ποῦμε λίγα φτωχά λόγια γιά μερικούς ἀπό τούς ἁγίους τῆς Πίστεως μας τούς ὁποίους ἡ Ἐκκλησία μας ἑορτάζει μέσα στόν μῆνα Νοέμβριο. Στίς 8 λοιπόν τοῦ μῆνος ἑορτάζουμε τήν Σύναξη τῶν Ἀρχαγγέλων Μιχαήλ καί Γαβριήλ καί ὅλων τῶν ἐπουρανίων δυνάμεων. Ἡ Σύναξη αὐτή ἀναφέρεται στό γεγονός τῆς παρεμβάσεως τοῦ Ἀρχαγγέλου Μιχαήλ στήν πτώση τῶν ἀγγέλων καί τό σταμάτημα αὐτῆς. Ὅταν ὁ Ἐωσφόρος ἠθέλησε νά πάρῃ τήν θέση τοῦ Θεοῦ τότε ἔπεσε σάν ἀστραπή ἀπό τόν οὐρανό. Στήν πτώση του αὐτή συμπαρέσυρε καί πολλούς ἀγγέλους οἱ ὁποίοι ἔγιναν δαίμονες. Τότε ὁ Ἀρχάγγελος Μιχαήλ μπῆκε στήν μέση καί φώναξε «Στῶμεν καλῶς στῶμεν μετά φόβου» καί σταμάτησε τό κακό. Ἀπό τότε ἔγινε ἀρχηγός τῶν ἐπουρανίων δυνάμεων καί μέ τήν φοβερή του δύναμη ἐμφανίστηκε πολλές φορές στήν ἱστορία τῶν ἀνθρώπων. Ὅπως στίς 8 Νοεμβρίου 1912 ὅταν οἱ Μυτιληνιοί ξύπνησαν τό πρωί καί εἴδαν τόν Ἀρχάγγελο νά κυνηγά τούς Τούρκους καί νά ἀπελευθερώνῃ τό νησί ἀπό τά χέρια τους. Στίς 9 τοῦ μῆνος ἔχουμε τήν μνήμη τοῦ ἁγίου Νεκταρίου τοῦ Θαυματουργοῦ, τοῦ ἁγίου τῆς ἀγάπης. Τί βάσανα πέρασε στήν ζωή του καί τί εὐλογίες καί δόξα ἔλαβε ὅμως ἀπό τόν Θεό γιά τήν ταπείνωση, τήν ὑπομονή, τήν πίστη καί τήν ἀγάπη του πρός Ἐκεῖνον καί τούς ἀνθρώπους. Δέν ὑπάρχει μιά γωνιά τῆς γῆς πού νά μήν ἔχῃ ἀκουστει τό ὄνομα του. Ὅπου καί νά πᾶς θά ὑπάρχει εἴτε ἐκκλησία στόν ὄνομα του, εἴτε εἰκόνα εἴτε ἄνθρωποι πού φέρουν τό ὄνομα του. Ἀγαποῦσε τούς πάντες καί τά πάντα γιατί μέσα του κατοικοῦσε ὁ Χριστός. Στό μοναστήρι του τρέχουν καθημερινά ἄνθρωποι αἰρετικοί, μουσουλμάνοι, δυσκολεμένοι καί ὄ,τι ἄλλο θέλετε. Γιατί; Γιατί νοιώθουν τήν ἀγάπη του, τήν καλωσύνη του αἰσθάνονται τήν φροντίδα καί βοήθεια του. Καί τούς δεχόταν ὅλους. Ἔλεγε δέ ἰδίως γιά τούς αἰρετικούς ὅτι ἀντί νά τούς βλέπουμε ἀπό τό ὕψος τῶν δογμάτων νά τούς βλέπουμε ἀπό τό ὕψος τῆς ἀγάπης. Καί πόσο ἀγαποῦσε τήν φύση. Τά δένδρα, τά λουλούδια, τά ζώα. Συνέχεια τά φρόντιζε, τά περιποιόταν καί τά πρόσεχε σάν καλός καί στοργικός πατέρας. Τήν εὐχή του νά ἔχουμε. Στίς 11 τοῦ μηνός ἑορτάζει ὁ ἅγιος Μεγαλομάρτυς Μηνᾶς, ὁ ἀγαπημένος ἅγιος τοῦ ἁγίου Νεκταρίου. Ἔζησε καί μαρτύρησε στήν Αἴγυπτο καί κράτησε μέχρι θανάτου τήν πίστη του στόν Χριστό. Εἶναι δε καί ὁ νικητής τοῦ 2 ου παγκοσμίου πολέμου. Στά αἰγυπτιακά τό Ἐλ ἀλαμέιν σημαίνει στόν τόπο τοῦ Μηνᾶ. Οἱ ἱστορικοί εἶπαν ὅτι μιά ἀναπάντεχη τρομερή ἀμμοθύελλα ἀκινητοποίησε τά ἄρματα τῶν Γερμανῶν καί διέκοψε τήν ἐπέλαση τους δίνοντας τήν ὑπεροχή στούς συμμάχους. Οἱ στρατιῶτες ὅμως εἶδαν ἕναν τρομερό πολεμιστή νά βγαίνει ἀπό τόν τόπο τοῦ Μῆνα καί νά κατατροπώνῃ τά ἄρματα τῶν Ναζιστῶν. Καί πόσοι ἀκόμα ἅγιοι μέσα στόν μῆνα Νοέμβριο ἀλλά εἶναι ἀδύνατον νά τούς ἀναφέρουμε ὅλους τώρα. Ἀγαπημένοι μου ἀδελφοί ἀνέβαίνουμε πρός τά Χριστούγεννα καί εἴθε ὁ Χριστός νά γεννηθῇ στίς ψυχές ὅλων μας. Χρόνια πολλά στούς ἑορτάζοντες καί ὁ Θεός μαζί μας. My beloved Christians we meet again at this monthly text that the Hellenic and Orthodox Community of Auckland kindly accommodates in her newsletter, to say a few simple words about some of the Saints of our Faith who our Church celebrates their memory in November. So on the 8 th of this month we celebrate the Synaxis (gathering) of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel and all the heavenly powers. This Feast is referred to the event of the interference of Archangel Michael at the fall of the Angels and the stopping of it. When Lucifer (the one who brings the light) that is devil desired to take the place of God, then he fall like a lightening down from Heavens, At this Fall of his he drawn with him plenty of Angels as well who became demons. Then Archangel Michael got in their way and cried out Let us stand well, let us stand in awe and stopped this terrible Fall. Since then he became the Commander of all the Heavenly powers and with his tremendous Might he interfered plenty of times in the Human history. Like on the 8 th of November 1912 when the people of the island of Lesvos, woke up in the morning and saw the Archangel chasing the Turks and setting the island free. On the 9 th we have the memory of Saint Nektarios the Wonderworker, the Saint of love. He has a life full of afflictions but what blessings and glory he received from God as well for his humility, patience, faith and love towards Him and men. There is not one place on earth where his name is not heard. Wherever you go there will be either a church dedicated to him, or an icon, or people who are named after him. The Saint loved everybody and everything because Christ was living in him. People of all kinds, heretics, Muslims, unfaithful and more run to his monastery everyday. Why? Because they feel his love, his kindness, they sense his care and help. And he was accepting all of them. He used to say for the heretics especially that instead of looking down at them from the height of the Dogmas to look at them from the height of love. He loved nature so much. The trees, the flowers, the animals. He was taking care of them as a good and affectionate father. May we all have his blessing. On the 11 th now is the Feast of the Great Martyr Minas, the beloved Saint of Saint Nektarios. He lived and had his Martyrdom in Egypt and kept his Faith to Christ till death. He is the winner of Second World War too. In the Egyptian language the words El Alamein means At the place of Minas. The historians said that a sudden, tremendous sandstorm detained the tanks of the Germans and ceased their unbeatable charge, giving the advantage to the Allies. The soldiers however saw a fearful warrior to come out from the place of Mina and destroy the tanks of the Nazis. There are so many more Saints who are celebrated in November, however is impossible to refer to all of them now. My dear brothers we go towards Christmas and may Christ be born in the hearts of us all. Many happy returns to the ones who have their name day in November and may God be with all of us. ιαγωνισµός Quiz Ο Κύριος φανερώθηκε στον Νώε και του είπε: -Σε ένα χρόνο θα ρίξω βροχή και θα σκεπάσω ολόκληρη τη Γη µε νερό και θα καταστρέψω τα πάντα. Αλλά θέλω εσύ να σώσεις τους δίκαιους και ευσεβείς ανθρώπους και δύο ζώα από κάθε είδος που υπάρχει στη Γη. Σε προστάζω να χτίσεις µία Κιβωτό. Και ο Θεός παραδίδει στον Νώε τα σχέδια για την Κιβωτό. Με φόβο Κυρίου ο Νώε παίρνει τα σχέδια και συµφωνεί να φτιάξει την Κιβωτό. -Θυµήσου, είπε ο Κύριος, Πρέπει να έχεις τελειώσει την Κιβωτό και να έχεις µαζέψει όλα τα ζώα σε ένα χρόνο. Ένα χρόνο αργότερα, αρχίζει να σχηµατίζεται µια καταιγίδα και όλες οι θάλασσες της Γης έχουν φουρτούνα. Ο Θεός κοιτάει τι γίνεται και βλέπει τον Νώε να κάθεται στην αυλή του και να κλαίει. -Νώε! Ανακράζει, Πού είναι η Κιβωτός; -Συγχώρεσε µε Κύριε, παρακαλά ο Νώε, έκανα ό,τι µπορούσα αλλά αντιµετώπισα µεγάλα προβλήµατα. Πρώτα-πρώτα έπρεπε να πάρω άδεια για την κατασκευή και τα σχέδια που µου έδωσες δε συµφωνούσαν µε τον ισχύοντα κανονισµό. Χρειάστηκε να προσλάβω ναυπηγό και να ξαναγίνουν τα σχέδια από την αρχή. Μετά βρέθηκα σε διαµάχη µε το Λιµενικό για το αν χρειαζόταν η Κιβωτός σύστηµα πυρασφάλειας, βάρκες και σωσίβια. Μετά µου έκανε καταγγελία ο γείτονάς µου, γιατί παραβίαζα λέει τα όρια δόµησης χτίζοντας την Κιβωτό στην αυλή µου, και έτσι χρειάστηκα άδεια και από την Πολεοδοµία. Είχα πρόβληµα και να βρω ξύλα για την Κιβωτό γιατί υπήρχε απαγόρευση υλοτόµησης για την προστασία της Πιτσιλωτής Κουκουβάγιας. Τελικά κατάφερα να πείσω την Υπηρεσία Προστασίας ασών πως χρειαζόµουν το ξύλο για να σώσω τις κουκουβάγιες. Αλλά όµως ο Οργανισµός Προστασίας Ζώων δεν µε άφηνε να πιάσω κουκουβάγιες. Και έτσι δεν έχουµε κουκουβάγιες. Μετά οι ξυλουργοί κατέβηκαν σε απεργία, αλλά κατάφερα να έρθω σε συµφωνία µε το σύλλογό τους. Τώρα έχω 16 ξυλουργούς να δουλεύουν στην Κιβωτό, αλλά δεν έχω κουκουβάγιες. Όταν άρχισα να µαζεύω τα υπόλοιπα ζώα, µου έκανε µήνυση µία οµάδα ακτιβιστών, γιατί θα έπαιρνα µόνο δύο από κάθε είδος. Όταν ξεµπέρδεψα µε αυτή τη µήνυση µε ενηµέρωσαν από το ΥΠΕΧΩ Ε ότι δεν γινόταν να συνεχιστούν οι εργασίες αν δεν κάνω δήλωση για την επίδραση στο περιβάλλον του σχεδιαζόµενου κατακλυσµού. εν τους αρέσει η ιδέα ότι δεν έχουν αρµοδιότητα στις αποφάσεις του ηµιουργού του Σύµπαντος. Μετά οι τοπογράφοι τους Στρατού απαίτησαν χάρτη της προτεινόµενης ροής των υδάτων του κατακλυσµού. Εγώ τους έστειλα µία υδρόγειο. Αυτές τις µέρες προσπαθώ να λύσω ένα ζήτηµα µε την Επιτροπή Ισότητας, που λένε ότι κάνω διακρίσεις επειδή δεν θα πάρω ανθρώπους που δεν πιστεύουν σε Εσένα, Κύριε. Μου έστειλαν και αυτή την ειδοποίηση µε δικαστικό επιµελητή ότι οφείλω φόρο και πρόστιµο γιατί δεν δήλωσα την Κιβωτό ως σκάφος αναψυχής. Τώρα η εφορία έχει παγώσει τις καταθέσεις µου γιατί πιστεύουν ότι φτιάχνω την Κιβωτό για να φύγω από την χώρα για να µην πληρώσω φόρους. Και ακόµη δεν έχει απο-φασίσει το Συµβούλιο της Επικρατείας αν ο Κατακλυσµός είναι αντισυνταγµατικός, αφού πρόκειται για θρησκευτική πράξη. Πραγµατικά, δεν υπάρχει περίπτωση να τελειώσω για τουλάχιστον 5-6 χρόνια... Και τότε άρχισε να καθαρίζει ο ουρανός, να λάµπει ο ήλιος και να ηρεµούν οι θάλασσες. Το ουράνιο τόξο στόλισε τον ορίζοντα. Ο Νώε κοίταξε τον Θεό µε ελπίδα. -Κύριε, αυτό σηµαίνει ότι δεν θα τα καταστρέψεις όλα;;; Και απάντησε ο Θεός : -Μπα, δε βαριέσαι. Ας το κάνει η κυβέρνηση... 1. Onassis Foundation buys El Greco painting A 17th-century El Greco painting that recently was purchased by a foundation set up under the will of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis went on display at the National Art Gallery in Athens on October 22. The Coronation of the Virgin (photo) was bought for an undisclosed sum this summer by the Alexander S Onassis Public Benefit Foundation, said its president, Anthony Papadimitriou. He said the seller was an unidentified US dealer. Papadimitriou said the oval shaped oil painting will be displayed at the National Gallery for the next two years before being moved to a new cultural centre the foundation is building in Athens. "This is a unique work from Greco's mature period," he said. It is one of only nine paintings by the Cretan-born El Greco displayed in Greece. Born in 1541, El Greco - whose real name was Domenikos Theotokopoulos - worked in Italy and Spain. His art, with elongated figures, vibrant colours and a disregard for the classical rules of painting, was prized during his lifetime but later fell out of favour. It regained strong acclaim in the 20th century. Gallery director Marina Lambraki-Plaka said the painting was part of El Greco's personal collection from his workshop in Spain, where the painter lived from 1577 until his death in 1614. It was made as a study for a large-scale painting on the same theme, in a church in the Spanish town of Illescas. Lambraki-Plaka said the work appeared at auction in 1913 and passed through various hands before entering the collection of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos. A report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime alleged last year that the late Marcos illegally amassed between $5 billion (3.9 billion euros) and $10 billion (7.8 billion euros) before he was ousted. When the dictator was overthrown in 1986, the painting was auctioned on behalf of the US government and bought by its previous owner. ATHENS NEWS, 24/10/2008 Page 4

Political representatives from Greece attended the conference too from ND, PASOK and LAOS. New Zealand was represented from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. It shouldn't be like this. There is no better time to get closer to our fellow humans, and therefore closer to Jesus whose birthday we are, after all, celebrating, than to find ways to show love, forgiveness, and charity. Here are a few ways: - Visit an old friend you haven't seen in years. - Forgive someone you used to be close to. Ask that person to forgive you. - Gather some children and go sing Christmas carols at a nursing home. - Go to church as often as you can, and take Jesus' life and example to heart. - Watch the great old movies It's a Wonderful Life, and A Christmas Carol with Alistair Sim. - Gather all the children for a viewing of A Charlie Brown Christmas. And then talk with them about Jesus' birth, just as little Linus does in the film. - Find ways to show charity, for its own worth, and as an example to your children. Here are two ways: 1. Sponsor a poor family this Christmas through the Salvation Army. To do so, call Raewyn Heke at (09)261-1074, or email Raewyn_heke@nzf.salvationarmy.org 2. With your children, choose life-saving gifts, like a flock of baby chickens, clean water, a small tractor, that various organizations can help you choose and provide. It is unbelievably inexpensive to do so, and they provide lovely and evocative little catalogs that you can browse through with your children. (My son Teddy has just given me $12 from his savings, for six baby chickens for a family in Africa, to start raising their own eggs and chicks.) NOΤICES ΑΝΑΚΟΙΝΩΣΕΙΣ Celebration of the Anniversary of the 28 th October 1940 On Saturday, 1 November, our community celebrated the 68 th Anniversary of the historic OXI Day, at the Greek Community Hall. The event was well attended by members of the Community, their families and friends. The President Mr. Andreas Dionysiou after welcoming everyone, he gave a short introduction on the significance of this historic day not only for the Greek people, but also for the people of rest of the world. Then everyone enjoyed the delicious food from the buffet, which was prepared by the members of the Executive Committee and also from contributions from members of the Community. As usual, the atmosphere was very pleasant with Greek music playing and many of the participants dancing. It was particularly nice to see many of the students who have been attending the dance classes taught by Takis Porfiriadis and Denny Wood during the year, perform Greek dances. Well done everybody! The evening was a great success and everyone enjoyed themselves. We would like to thank all those who participated in the celebration and everyone who contributed by way of food donations, the service of food, washing up and cleaning of the hall afterwards. Εορτασµός της Επετείου της 28ης Οκτωβρίου 1940 Το Σάββατο 1η Νοεµβρίου, η Κοινότητά µας γιόρτασε την 68η επέτειο του ιστορικού ΟΧΙ, στο χολ της Ελληνικής Κοινότητας. Ο αριθµός των µελών και φίλων τους που παρευρέθηκαν ήταν αρκετά µεγάλος. Ο Πρόεδρος Ανδρέας ιονυσίου αφού καλωσόρισε τους παρόντες µίλησε σύντοµα για την σηµµασία αυτής της ιστορικής µέρας όχι µόνο για τους Έλληνες αλλα επίσης και για τον υπόλοιπο κόσµο. Μετά όλοι απόλαυσαν τα νόστιµα φαγητά που είχαν ετοιµασθεί από τα µέλη του ιοικητικού Συµβουλίου και από µέλη της Κοινότητας. Όπως συνήθως η ατµόσφαιρα ήταν πολύ ευχάριστη µε Ελληνική µουσική και χορό. Ιδιαίτερα ευχάριστο ήταν το γεγονός ότι, πολλοί από τους µαθητές που παρακολούθησαν µαθήµατα Ελληνικού χορού από το Τάκη Πορφυριάδη και την Denny Wood κατά τη διάρκεια του χρόνου, χόρεψαν Ελληνικούς χορούς και πάρα πολύ ωραία. Συγχαριτήρια σε όλους. Η βραδιά είχεµεγάλη επιτυχία και όλοι πέρασαν πάρα πολύ ωραία. Θα θέλαµε να ευχαριστήσουµε όλους αυτούς που παρευρέθηκαν, όλους αυτούς που βοήθησαν µε την προετοιµασία και σερβίρισµα των φαγητών και επίσης το πλύσιµο των πιάτων και καθάρισµα του χολ µετά από το Συγχαρητήρια σε ένα από τα πιο αγαπηµένα µέλη της Κοινότητάς µας, τον Νίκο Τσιρίκο, ο οποίος παντρεύτηκε την Κυριακή 30 Νοεµβρίου, την εκλεκτή της καρδιάς του Pico. Τους ευχόµαστε κάθε ευτυχία για το µέλλον. Congratulations To one of the most beloved members of our Community, Mr. Nikos Tsirikos, who got married on November the 30 th to Pico. We wish them all the best for the future.
