Martyr Ariadne of Phrygia The Holy Martyr Ariadne was a servant of Tertillos, a city official of Promyssia (Phrygia) during the reign of the emperor Hadrian (117-161). Once, when on the occasion of the birth of a son, the master made a sacrificial offering to the pagan gods, the Christian Ariadne refused to participate in the impious ceremony. They subjected her to beatings and lacerated her body with sharp iron hooks. Then they threw the martyr into prison and for a long while they exhausted her with hunger, demanding that she worship their gods. When they released the saint from prison, she left the city, but Tertillos sent pursuers after her. Seeing that they were chasing her, she ran, calling out to God to defend her from her enemies. Suddenly, through her prayers, a fissure opened in the mountain, and St Ariadne hid in it. This miracle brought the pursuers into confusion and fear. In their depravity of mind they began to strike one another with spears. 2 23

Everyone is welcome in the Orthodox Church and may receive the blessed bread (antidoron) at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. As a grand part of the Peabody Centennial celebration, St. Vasilios is inviting all of its parishioners to join us, and is particularly excited about having all of our organizations represented at the parade. More information will be distributed on Sunday, September 11, but as of now, we are planning the following: A Taverna themed float Greek dance groups from the greater Boston area Each of our organizations marching under their banner Participation of our various youth groups The FHASNE Evzones Replica Group We will only be celebrating one Divine Liturgy on October 2nd, in order for everyone to participate. In addition, every member of any of our youth organizations will receive a free t-shirt to wear while they march in the parade. Adults are also invited to purchase a t-shirt for only $10. Want to ride on the float? Have you ever wanted to ride along a parade route in style, while sitting around a table, listening to Greek music, and enjoying lamb on the spit? Here is your chance! We are auctioning off 4 seats on the float to the highest bidder to ride in style on the parade route. Please submit your bid utilizing the attached form by Friday, September 23rd and the highest bidders will be announced on Sunday, September 25th. If you would like a Trisagion at the graveside during the week you are kindly asked to make an appointment by calling the church office. HOSPITAL VISITS Due to HIPAA privacy rules, hospitals no longer provide a list of Orthodox patients to us. Therefore, if you or a loved one are, or will be, in the hospital, please contact the church office for a pastoral visit. Also, please notify the office if a friend or family member is in a rehab center, nursing home, assisted living facility or under hospice care. If you are using your foot to lower the kneeler please have your foot support the kneeler until it gently touches the floor.
