On September 26, the Education, Cultural, and Youth Ministry (ECYM) Committee is excited to offer the Fall Family Retreat and welcome Father Barnabas Powell to our community as he presents his retreat topic: Orthodox On Purpose. We were encouraged to contact Father Barnabas after a few parishioners viewed some of his teaching videos on the internet and brought this to our attention. I met Father Barnabas maybe a dozen years ago when he was still a layman working at the Orthodox Christian Network in Fort Lauderdale. Since then he graduated from Holy Cross Seminary in Brookline, Massachusetts, and has serviced our Metropolis as a priest for the past five years at Saints Irene, Raphael, and Nicholas Church in Cumming, Georgia. Father Barnabas is married to the former Connie Demas, and they have two daughters, Alexandra and Katerina. Father Barnabas has said: Orthodoxy attracts me precisely because of my background as a Pentecostal. Worship is very important to Pentecostals. And, in Orthodoxy I have found a depth of worship that doesn t deny my emotions, but doesn t depend on them as well. Orthodox worship takes into account the whole person. It was said by the great Russian writer, Dostoevsky, that beauty will save the world, and I have found a beauty in Orthodox worship that draws me to God. As we attend Church, I pray that we may also be moved by the beauty of the worship services and that we may recognize that this unique splendor reflects the magnificence of our Creator God. As Father Barnabas reflects, it is this beauty of our Orthodox worship that draws (him) to God. I pray that you may also experience this transformative attraction. Come and see Father Barnabas and enjoy his unique home spun humor and delivery as he shares with you his topic: Orthodox on Purpose beginning at 10:00 am on Saturday. The ECYM is offering you this retreat, including lunch, for free. Just please RSVP so that we may prepare enough food! DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE The first 2014-2015 Daughters of Penelope meeting is next Sunday, September 27, 2015, at 12:00 pm in the Hellenic Cultural Center. President Sandy Bouzon encourages all members to attend as the new calendar year begins.

Below is the hymn. 10 Commandments 10 Describes Perfection 10 Digits on our Hands and Feet 10 Elements form all of Creation 10 Hymns our Children learned 10 am Divine Liturgy begins The Sunday (Church) School staff worked very hard over the summer to develop a wonderful year for our children. Here are two new learning opportunities to which they look forward: Beginning last Sunday, September 13, 2015, the first day of class, Father George will offer a sermonette for the children after the Gospel reading (a few minutes after 10 am). For the past two years, the children learned to chant 10 hymns, and the staff encourages them to sing in church. Everyone is invited to join the children and choir in chanting the Communion Hymn Enite ton Kyrion - Praise the Lord. So, bring your listening ears, your singing voices,! and join PHILOPTOCHOS GARAGE SALE TODAY The Garage Sale is a major fundraiser for Philoptochos, so everyone's support and assistance is deeply appreciated. THE EPISTLE Galatians 2:16-20 The Lord will give strength to his people. Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory. BRETHREN, you know that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. THE GOSPEL Mark 8:34-38; 9:1 The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."
