[president s message] THE PANCRETAN BOAT SAILS TO CRETE IN SUMMER 2009 DON T MISS IT! Ladies and Gentlemen: In a recent survey we ve reached several hundreds of our members, and asked your opinions as to your preferences on where to have the 09 Convention: Land or Sea? By a margin of almost 2 to 1, those surveyed, indicated their preference that the 09 Convention take place on a Cruise Ship! It s therefore a done deal! Our Board of Directors will do its best to make it happen indeed. I also want to let you know that just before Easter, I had taken a trip to Greece, in order to personally inspect the various cruise boats we were considering, and I want to reassure you that I indeed liked what I saw! I am sure that you will approve of them too. The main idea is that the cruise ship will act as a floating hotel, which will visit and dock at all major cities of Crete, where we will be able to disembark and visit local attractions, hold meetings, attend cultural events and receptions and all of the things that we normally do during our conventions. In this and future issues of KPHTH we will be providing a great deal of details as to the exact itinerary of the trip and program for this extraordinary Convention! Till then however, and in order to wet your palette and appetite, here is a preliminary summary of the proposed trip: After making the round of Crete, we will then set sail for Alexandria, Egypt, where we will have an opportunity to visit the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa, and where we will be received by our own compatriot, His Beatitude Patriarch Theodoros II. We will also have an opportunity to visit local attractions, such as the famous library of Alexandria and perhaps even take a trip to the Pyramids. From Alexandria, we will return back to Crete, where we will disembark. The duration of the Convention-cruise will be 7-days. 4 KPHTH JUNE 2008 I urge you to reserve your space/cabin by sending us your deposit as soon as possible. We are doing our utmost to keep the Cruise/Convention cost to an absolute minimum. Furthermore, in order to make the cruise affordable for our Youth, the Board has decided to initiate a special fundraising effort, so that we may be able to subsidize all of our college youths. We have set a lofty target of attracting more than 250 youths and young-adults to this Odyssey to our homeland! I urge all of you to support this noble goal, by purchasing raffle tickets, which will be circulating to all of our members soon. I urge you to save the dates and to start your own planning to attend this one of-a-kind event in July of 2009! Plan a family reunion! Gather your children and grandchildren! Bring them to this historic Odyssey! We will immerse them not only in the Cretan Sun and Sea, but also in our Cretan culture, history and leventia, and make them re-born Cretans. The cruise boat which we plan to book has limited capacity. To book a space on the boat, we urge you to send us a deposit ASAP! ($300 per adult and $150 per child or youth under 24 Please see page with detailed information and coupon in this issue of KPHTH). Αγαπητά μέλη, Κυρίες και Κύριοι: Σε πρόσφατη δημοσκόπηση που έγινε ανάμεσα στα μέλη μας, για την εκδήλωση προτίμησης σχετικά με το συνέδριο του 2009; Ξηρά ή Θάλασσα, το αποτέλεσμα ήταν σχεδ όν 2 προς 1 υπέρ του Κρουαζιερόπλοιου. Ο κύβος ερρίφθη. Η απόφαση πάρθηκε. Το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο θα κάνει τα αδύνατα δυνατά για να πραγματοποιηθεί αυτή η Κρουαζιέρα. Επίσης, θα ήθελα να σας ενημερώσω ότι πριν το Πάσχα ταξίδεψα στην Ελλάδα για να εποπτεύσω προσωπικά τα διάφορα υποψήφια Κρουαζιερόπλοια, και θέλω να σας επιβεβαιώσω ότι πραγματικά μ ευχαρίστησαν οι επιλογές που μας δώθηκαν. Είμαι σίγουρος ότι θα εγκρίνετε και εσείς μία από τις προτινόμενες επιλογές. Η βασική ιδέα είναι το κρουαζιερόπλοιο να χρησιμοποιηθεί σαν «πλωτό ξενοδοχείο», το οποίο θα επισκέπτεται και θα αράζει σ όλες τις μεγάλες πόλεις-λιμάνια της Κρήτης, όπου εκεί θα μπορούμε να αποβιβαζόμαστε και να επισκεπτόμαστε τα τοπικά αξιοθέατα, να παρακολουθούμε πολιτιστικές εκδηλώσεις και δεξιώσεις, καθώς επίσης και να διεξάγουμε τις συνεδριάσεις μας και γενικότερα όλες τις εκδηλώσεις που συνήθως έχουμε κατά τη διάρκεια των συνεδρίων μας. Σ αυτό και στα επόμενα τεύχη του περιοδικού ΚΡΗ- ΤΗ θα σας ενημερώσουμε λεπτομερώς για το ακριβές δρομολόγιο και πρόγραμμα αυτού του, με εξαιρετικές προοπτικές, Συνεδρίου! Μέχρι τότε όμως, θα σας δώσω προκαταρτικά μια μικρή γεύση του προγράμματος για να ετοιμάσετε την όρεξη σας. «Αφότου κάνουμε πανηγυρικά το γύρω της Κρήτης, θα σαλπάρουμε μετά για την Αλεξάνδρεια, στην Αίγυπτο, όπου θα έχουμε την ευκαιρία να επισκεφτούμε το Ελληνικό Ορθόδοξο Πατριαρχείο της Αλεξάνδρειας όπου θα μας υποδεχτεί ο συμπατριώτης μας Παναγιώτατος Πατριάρχης Αλεξάνδρειας και Πάσης Αφρικής κ.θεόδωρος II. Θα έχουμε επίσης την ευκαιρία να επισκεφτούμε τη διάσημη βιβλιοθήκη της Αλεξάνδρειας και ίσως και τις Πυραμίδες. Από την Αλεξάνδρεια θα επιστρέψουμε στην Κρήτη όπου και θα αποβιβαστούμε. Και πάλι θέλω να σας διαβεβαιώσω πως κάνουμε τα μέγιστα δυνατά για να κρατήσουμε χαμηλά το κόστος συμμετοχής του Συνεδρίου-Κρουαζιέρας. Επιπροσθέτως, για να μπορέσουμε να κάνουμε το Συνέδριο οικονομικά προσιτό στη νεολαία μας, το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο αποφάσισε να ξεκινήσει λαχειοφόρο αγορά για συγκομιδή κεφαλαίων ούτως ώστε να μπορέσουμε να χρηματοδοτήσουμε τουλάχιστον μερικώς τη νεολαία μας. Έχουμε θέσει σα στόχο να μπορέσουμε να προσελκύσουμε περισσότερο από 250 νέους-ες και ενήλικους νέους σ αυτήν την Οδύσσεια στην πατρίδα μας! Προτρέπω όλους σας να στηρίξετε τον ευγενή αυτό σκοπό, αγοράζοντας λαχεία, τα οποία θα αρχίσουν να διατίθονται σύντομα σ όλα τα μέλη μας. Κλείνοντας θα ήθελα να σας παροτρύνω να σημειώσετε τις ημερομηνίες αυτές και να ξεκινήσετε να προγραμματίζετε τη συμμετοχή σας σ αυτό το μεγαλοπρεπές γεγονός τον Ιούλιο 2009! Θα τα μυήσουμε όχι μόνο στον Κρητικό Ήλιο και Θάλασσα, αλλά και στην Κρητική Ιστορία, κουλτούρα και «Λεβεντιά», θα ξαναγεννηθούν Κρητικοί. [letters] Dear Ms. Vasilakis, PanCretan Endowment Fund Chair I am enclosing a thank-you letter from the students who received support from the PanCretan Association. I am also including the list of students from the Medical School of the University of Crete and Boston University who participated over the years in the student exchange program from 2001 to 2008. The 2008 program is underway and 14 Greek students have come or are in their way to Boston. Taking advantage of the guidance provided by this exchange program, the last two years seven of the early participants of the program (Dimitra Skondra, Sosipatros Boikos, Manolis Tampakakis, Argiro Bizaki, Demosthenes Papamatheakis, Panagiotis Roussos and Costas Charitakis) were admitted to prestigious internship programs in the United States. In addition, three participants (George Michas, Angelos Oikonomopoulos and Kostianna Sereti) are pursuing PhD degrees at Harvard, and one (Andreas Kateifides) is pursuing a PhD degree at BU. These are clear indices of the importance and the success of this program. I hope that the PanCretan Association will be able to continue its support of this important educational program, which is designed to create the next generation of leaders in academic medicine in Greece. Dear Editor of KPHTH Magazine: I would like to thank all of those who were responsible for preparing the beautiful documentary about the Cretan Revolution of 1669-1830. It was very educational for my family, showing how the brave Cretan Warriors, and their struggle and sacrifice to free Crete from the tyranny they endured during the barbaric life they had, caused by the Turkish Occupation. For all of us, we pay homage to all who sacrificed their lives so we can enjoy freedom today. We need more of the same kind of documentaries so our children and grandchildren can learn about our great heritage, history and culture. ΠΛΩΤΟ ΣΥΝΕΔΡΙΟ ΠΕΑ 2009 Δελτίο Κρατήσεων Όσον αφορά την κρουαζιέρα στο Συνέδριο του Ιουλίου 2009, γίνεται κάθε προσπάθεια για ναύλωση κρουαζιερόπλοιου που ικανοποιεί βέλτιστα τις ανάγκες και προσδοκίες μας. Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τα αποτελέσματα πρόσφατης δημοσκόπησης και τον προσδοκώμενο αριθμό μελών της ΠΕΑ που θα παραβρεθούν στο Συνέδριο στην Κρήτη το προσεχές έτος, εξετάζουμε ένα πλωτό θέρετρο με δυνατότητα φιλοξενίας 800 περίπου επιβατών σε 395 καμπίνες. Δεδομένου ότι ο αριθμός καμπινών είναι περιορισμένος, προσκαλείστε να κάνετε κρατήσεις το συντομότερο δυνατόν. Μια «επιστρεφόμενη κατάθεση» στο ποσό των 300 δολλαρίων ανά άτομο (ενήλικο) και 150 για κάθε παιδί και πλήρους απασχόλησης φοιτητή ή φοιτήτρια απαιτείται προκειμένου να κρατηθεί η καμπίνα ή καμπίνες σας. Όταν οι διαθέσιμες καμπίνες εξαντληθούν, το όνομά σας θα μπει σε κατάλογο αναμονής και η συμμετοχή σας στο Συνέδριο 2009 της ΠΕΑ δεν θα μπορεί να εγγυηθεί. Κρατήστε τις θέσεις σας το συντομότερο δυνατόν με μετάβαση στην ιστοσελίδα της ΠΕΑ, www.pancretan.org,, ή συμπλήρωση του δελτίου συμμετοχής και ταχυδρόμησή του μαζί με επιταγή πληρωτέα στη: «PAA 2009 Cruise Convention στον Mr. Emmanuel Sifakis στη διεύθυνση που παρουσιάζεται στο δελτίο κράτησης. Μέχρι την 15η Οκτωβρίου 2008 θα σας ειδοποιήσουμε για τις ακριβείς δαπάνες από τις διάφορες επιλογές/κατηγορίες καμπινών για να κάνετε τη δική σας επιλογή. Για λόγους προγραμματισμού, υπολογίζουμε ότι το μέσο κόστος ανά άτομο θα είναι στο ύψος των 1200 δολλαρίων συν το φόρο. Μερικές καμπίνες θα είναι περισσότερο και μερικές θα είναι λιγότερο, ανάλογα με το κατάστρωμα, τη θέση και τον αριθμό επιβατών ανά καμπίνα. Επίσης, ανάλογα με το ποσό της τελικής επιχορήγησης για τη νεολαία, το κόστος πιθανά θα είναι σημαντικά χαμηλότερο. Η προκαταρκτική κατάθεση είναι για την εξασφάλιση της κράτησής σας μόνο. Η πρωτοποριακή έμπνευση να συνδέσει το συνέδριο με μια αξέχαστη κρουαζιέρα νοσταλγίας σε όλες τις Κρη τικές πολιτείες και μαγικές ακρογιαλιές, βρήκε μεγάλη ανταπόκριση και μεγάλο ενθουσιασμό από τα μέλη της οργανώσεως μας. Στην ιστορική Πύλη της πόλης θα αναγνωρίσουμε τον Ελληνικό στοιχείο και τα χνάρια που άφησε στον χώρο και στον τόπο. Στο πατριαρχείο της Αλεξάνδρειας θα μας καλωσορίσει ο νέος πατριάρχης Αλεξάνδρειας και πάσης Αφρικής Θεόδωρος, κατά κόσμου ο Νίκος Χορευτάκης που γεννήθηκε στο Ηράκλειο Κρήτης. The prospect of this crystallized idea is to bring the Hellenes abroad closer to the motherland and to nourish their memory with the traditions, values and customs of their land. The Nostos ship, from Minoan Crete to Egypt of the Pharaohs will anchor at lively Alexandria, a city founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC. At the city s historic entrance we will recognize the Greek influence in the area. At the Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa, we will be welcomed by the new Patriarch Theodoros II, a Cretan, born Nicholas Horeftakis in Iraklion. One of the basic reasons of the Cretan Odyssey s existence is to serve as a bridge between the new generation and the glorious past and to transplant the historical knowledge and culture of our ancestors into the heart of the youth. We do not want our children to abandon the characteristics of the Cretan idiosyncrasy, traditions, values and customs. The cultural wealth of Crete is a priceless treasure and only the youth can resist assimilation vigorously and preserve the local identity and authenticity of our unparallel culture. Whoever controls the past determines the future as well. Goals of the organizing committee for a successful convention are: 1. The PAA, in an attempt to help financially young Cretans of America to participate in the cruise, will fund and promote a lottery to cover part of their expenses. 2. PAA has begun a close cooperation with the local authorities in Crete for multi-faced cultural happenings so the participants and visitors can experience and enjoy the rich culture of the island. 3. At the same time, the committee has researched and reached out to travel agencies, cruise lines and airlines to ensure fun, recreation, culture, security and activities at the lowest price. Greek-American Pioneer Educator Remembered BOSTON Since his student days at Northeastern University in the early seventies, George Chryssis wanted to find the right time to honor Hercules W. Geromanos, the legendary Dean and professor whose vision and innovative thinking established the school s co-operative education model, thus greatly helping to elevate Northeastern as a worldrenown institution of higher learning. Finally, as the university is getting ready to celebrate in 2009 the one hundredth anniversary of cooperative education, George Chryssis spearheaded an effort to recognize Geromanos with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, in a ceremony that took place on April 10, 2008, at the campus of Northeastern University. This commemoration has dual meaning, said George Chryssis. First it commemorates the accomplishments and the spirit of professor Geromanos, a prominent Greek- American; and second it celebrates the rich history of Northeastern University and its long tradition and strong bonds with the Greek-American community. Hercules W. Geromanos was born in 1880 in Cincinnati, Ohio. His father, who had emigrated from Greece in 1868, moved the family to Springfield, Massachusetts in 1895. Geromanos was a brilliant and gifted individual, who attended MIT and graduated in three years with a degree in Chemical Engineering on June 10, 1902. In 1908 he was recruited to teach at Northeastern University and the following year, at the age of 29, he was appointed as the first Dean of the newly established College of Engineering at Northeastern University. That same year, he conceived the idea of introducing co-operative education to the university. Subsequently, he recruited and enrolled the first class of eight co-op students, who alternated one week of classroom study with one week of on-thejob experience, successfully launching what is now Northeastern s signature experiential learning educational model. The co-op model of education was first tried at the University of Cincinnati in 1906 and Northeastern was the second school to adopt it in 1909. Today Northeastern University is the worldwide leader in co-op education, with about 7,000 students participating in the program. Geromanos retired from academia in 1917 but his vision, innovation 14 KPHTH JUNE 2008

The plaque unveiling ceremony was attended by over one hundred persons, including Geromanos two grandchildren Bradley Curtis and Judith Curtis MacMurray and a greatgrandson Scott Curtis. Bradley and Judith spoke fondly about their grandfather. He was truly a genius, formidable and very distinguished, said Judith. He was a true patriarch, always in charge of the family. He was in command of his intelligence and besides his love for science he enjoyed collecting scientific gadgets, raising koi fish and planting beautiful gladiolas in his back yard garden. He was a very interesting person, proud of his Hellenic heritage and thanks to today s event, we feel closer to our Greek roots also. Today is a very special day added Joseph Aoun, Northeastern University s President. Thanks to George Chryssis leadership, the university is not only honoring the memory of professor Geromanos, a true visionary and brilliant academician, but also it celebrates the legacy of co-op education, which over the years has proven to be a living organism that keeps giving back to the school. As a parallel effort, Chryssis led a fundraising drive to establish the Hercules W. Geromanos Memorial Scholarship fund. Through this effort, Aoun said, over one hundred and twenty thousand dollars was collected, but more donors are needed to contribute and keep Geromanos dream and legacy alive. The initial funds to establish the scholarship came from several Greek- American alumni and friends of Northeastern University. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a co-op student whose achievements in academics and commitment to co-op embody and exemplify the principles of innovation, scholarship, work ethics and high character; the same principles that guided the work and life of Hercules W. [our Crete] The Park for the Preservation of Flaura and Fauna PHOTOS BY: www.west-crete.com At a time when living organisms are disappearing at an alarming rate, especially through habitat destruction, the Park for the Preservation of Flora and Fauna of the Technical University of Crete, which extends to 30 hectares, constitutes a small but important area where native plants and co-existing animals are protected and can develop without human intervention. The Park is located 5 kilometres northeast of the town of Chania, in the area of Profitis Ilias, near Venizelos Grave, on Michelogianni Street near the Technical University Campus. The idea of creating a Park in Akrotiri, within the property of the Technical University of Crete, was conceived in 1994 by the then rector of the University, Professor Yannis Phillis. He designed and developed the Park in the next decade with the partial support of the Pancretan Association of America and inaugurated it in 2004. Yannis Phillis has been the director of the Park since 1994. 16 KPHTH JUNE 2008 In the past, the area was used for grazing and farming, activities that continued long after the Technical University of Crete acquired the land. In 1994, in an effort to create a protected area, the land was fenced and access was prohibited to hunters, shepherds and plant collectors. At present only the olive grove is cultivated. This is done organically. Crete is home to a particularly rich flora including 1,893 documented plant species of which 159 are endemic to the island. Τen percent of Cretan plants are considered threatened and need protection. Up to now, 250 different plant species that grow naturally in habitats of the Park have been identified, while their systematic documentation is still in progress. The goals of the Park are conservation, research and education, environmental education, raising public awareness., and recreation for visitors. Conservation is achieved via: The creation and maintenance of

representative living collections of Cretan plant species in thematic botanical gardens corresponding to natural habitats of Crete (ex-situ conservation), The preservation of the areas of the Park with natural native vegetation such as the gorge, or areas with evergreen shrubs and phrygana (in-situ conservation), The reproduction of plants and the creation of a database related to their propagation. Research and Education with the participation of researchers and students from the Technical University of Crete and from other Institutions is focused on: The dangers that threaten biodiversity, The consequences and sustainable use of biodiversity loss, The preservation of traditional knowledge on the uses of native plants. The Park, containing a great range of living organisms, presents a research site for environmental sciences. It offers a valuable experience of the natural environment and biodiversity of Crete, and constitutes an outdoor education site for students and visitors. The Park also has as a goal raising public awareness of: The dangers that threaten biodiversity, The consequences of biodiversity loss, The sustainable use of biodiversity, The preservation of traditional knowledge on the uses of native plants. The Park is a center for the development of environmental tourism. Because of its proximity to the town of Chania, it attracts a large number of local and foreign visitors interested in the flora and fauna of Crete. Funding of the Park The founder of the Park for the Preservation of Fauna and Flora of the Technical University of Crete, Professor Yannis Phillis, secured the support and partial funding of the Park from the Pancretan Association of America through the Pancretan Endowment Fund (PEF), which is set up to support programs of the Universities of Crete. PEF and other donors have contributed more than 160,000 since 1995. It is hoped that the Park will serve as an example for other public and private organizations of the importance of initiatives to protect the environment. The Pancretan Association of America, through the PEF, is proud to have been instrumental in launching this magnificent botanical park at the University of Crete. Manny does it better. At his baptism in Crete in 1948, the priest poured the oil into the font in the shape of a cross. Even after he was immersed into the water three times, the shape of the cross was not disturbed. The baby boy was Emmanuel Rovithis, founder and owner of Manny s TV and Appliances, a successful retail business located throughout western Massachusetts and Connecticut. Better known as Manny, he was born to Maria and Demetrious Rovithis Maria from Malia, Iraklion, and Demetrious from Vrahassi Lasithis, Crete. His father immigrated to the United States in 1955, followed shortly thereafter by his mother, Manny and three siblings Stephen, Stella, and Evangelia. Another sister, Christina, was born in the United States. They settled in Springfield, Massachusetts, where Manny was raised and educated. Upon completion of trade school, Manny went to work for House of Television as a technician and later was promoted to store manager. Early in his career at HOT he met his future life and business partner, Barbara Jayne (better known as BJ), They were married in 1969 and had two children, Demetrius and Tia. When Manny announced in 1977 that he was going to pursue his vision of becoming an entrepreneur, Barbara stepped up to support his dreams. With his family by his side, Manny s TV and Appliances opened in Wilbraham, Massachusetts, with only 900 square feet of space and two employees - Manny and BJ, who have been a team ever since. The team and organization has grown to include six large locations and 87 employees with BJ, their son, daughter, and son-in-law Vincent Basile all actively participating in the daily operations of the business. Those who live in western Massachusetts and Connecticut all know Manny from his long-time slogan: We have to do better - we live here. He is also known for his reputation for providing customer service with his personal touch. What most people do not know about him is his dedication and generosity to his community and his
