Catechism 101 This time of the year we often make resolutions concerning our physical health, our family relationships, even our finances. Perhaps we also consider spiritual resolutions, addressing the everpresent need for a more intense prayer life, going to church more often, or reconciling with an old adversary. Whether our resolutions are of a religious nature or something more secular, there is a key for every resolution to make it past the middle of January. We must remember that whether we are struggling with food or exercise, prayer or forgiveness, these are all struggles in which God wants to be involved in every detail. Our God, as a perfect Father, wants to participate and be included in our everyday endeavors, our problems and our pains, in order to comfort us, to help us through them, to lead us to closer relationships with Him and with one another. Our Lord who came down from Heaven to become incarnate is the God who wants to share in all our lives leading us His resurrection and to His Kingdom. I bring this point in this month s issue of the Voice, reflecting upon our continued Bible Study of the Book of Exodus. In the 12th chap- Stewardship Sunday January 15th, 2017

To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. ter, Moses, speaking on behalf of the Lord, gives distinct instructions for the celebration of the Passover meal. This is how it reads: That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. Do not eat the meat raw or boiled in water, but roast it over a fire with the head, legs and internal organs. Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it. This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord s Passover. (Exodus 12:8-11) There are many passages such as this one in the Old Testament that prescribe rituals that seem trivial or manmade. As 21st century human beings governed almost exclusively by reason, we tend to dismiss such prescriptions and dietary restrictions, as we rather concentrate on the spirit of the law. And even though the spirit of the law is of primary importance, we should not ignore the trivial details and ritualistic prescriptions for there is a hidden purpose within them. In these details is revealed the fact that our God is aware of and concerned with everything in our lives. Why else would it be important whether we boiled the Passover meal or if we roasted it as prescribed by Him. He is aware and concerned in even the minute details not to control us or out of a sense of curiosity, but in that He wants to be involved. He desires to be invited and included in every part of our life. Just as good parents want to continue to be relevant in the lives of their children, so does God want us to involve Him, to let Him participate, in order to empathize, help and deliver us. He is not an absentee landlord, but a Lord that wants us to let Him in our everyday affairs. This is why God has something to say about everything and everyone, not just how to pray or worship, but also how and what we eat, whom we marry, how we raise our children, when we should work, how we relate toward our neighbor, our society, our government, the environment, our friends and our enemies. God s commandments, as trivial as they seem many times, remind us that He, by prescribing them, desires above all to be involved, to be made a part of every breath we take, by continuously abiding by His commandments. And when this obedience seems trivial or far too detailed to be of any divine origin, then let us remember that our Lord is the One who wants to be always be present in every New Year s resolution we make. He is the One who created us, Who was born in order to walk among us and be with us and within us for ever. Amen. Fr. Tilemahos 2 The Voice

ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM You are the Voice of Christ in a Changing World As the Father Has Sent Me, So I Send You John 20:21 and the theme of the 2016 Clergy-Laity Congress Dear Saint Spyridon Steward, The base from which we serve as the Voice of Christ in a Changing World is the parish. A strong parish provides opportunities for sharing the Good News of Christ, for welcoming those that are searching for a spiritual home, and a base from which we are sent out into the world. The parish also provides a place for worship, community and education in the faith. To be stewards of the Gospel, we need to be stewards of our parish. This requires the vision and inspiration to see the parish, not as it is, but as it could be. We are called to offer ourselves and our treasure to make our local church all that is can be. This is our 100th Anniversary year and we will honor the generations of faith and tradition that have bestowed upon us our beautiful parish. We will celebrate this milestone with a variety of events culminating with the Anniversary Banquet on October 15th, 2017. We hope that with your loving support it will be a memorable and inspiring centennial celebration. In the meantime, we seek your continued support for all our worthy ministries. Giving to His Church is a way to thank God for His grace and generosity. Before completing the enclosed Commitment Card and Information Form, please give prayerful consideration to the commitment you are making. We hope and pray that this year s stewardship and commitment to our parish will stand worthy of our parish history and the blessings of our patron Saint Spyridon. Yours in Christ, Rev. Fr. Tilemahos Alikakos, Protopresbyter STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY SUNDAY, JANUARY 15TH, 2017 All of us are called to offer our Stewardship Commitment on Sunday, January 15th and show our support for our church ministries and mission. St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 3

INCOME BUDGET 2017 Stewardship ($140,000) is the primary way to support the ministries of our church. Our stewardship involves our time, talent, and treasure. A steward is an active participant in the worship life of the church, and devotes his or her talents in ministering to the community. The 2017 stewardship card contains a multitude of opportunities for volunteering. Our church could not function without our dedicated volunteers. Every steward also perceives the financial needs of the church as his or her own. Our stewardship to the church should adequately reflect our priorities and our devotion to our parish home. We need to work together to raise our stewardship portion of the parish income to 50% or an average of $50/month, in order for our parish to grow and minister to its faithful. Therefore, please encourage family members or friends to join our parish and also consider increasing your own stewardship contribution for 2017. Tuition and Fees ($58,800) include everything that is paid toward the Religious Education School and Plutarchos Greek School. Our schools rely on dedicated staff and volunteers. The tuition seldom covers the expenses for our schools and therefore the financial support of the parish and our faithful is needed for our schools. Fundraisers ($87,797) include the Summer Festival and Raffle, the Craft Show, and the Community Dinner Dance. Everyone is called to support these events as volunteers, donors and participants, because we are relying on their success to meet the needs of our community. Donations ($21,024) include all the appeals on Christmas, Pascha, flower donations, in memory donations, youth activities, Kentro Bookstore income, and other gifts that are offered by the faithful. Once again we always count on everyone s participation in these appeals. Candles & Trays ($109,089) are very much dependent on church attendance. A parish can have wonderful finances but without church attendance it will become a museum. We need to attend church regularly, partake of communion at least monthly, and plan to give a respectable weekly offering that reflects our priorities and devotion to God and to our community. Other ($12,430) category includes the Kentro sales, Youth Ministry fees and interest from the bank. Tuitions & Fees, $58,800, 14% Other, $12,430, 3% Income Budget 2017 Stewardship, $140,000, 33% Fundraisers, $87,797, 20% Donations, $21,024, 5% Candles & Collections, $109,089, 25% 4 The Voice

EXPENSE BUDGET 2017 Ministry Programs ($158,863) includes all that is required to support all our parish inistries. We are blessed at our parish to have an active worship ministry with over 250 services and sacraments, counseling and visitations, numerous fundraisers, food pantry and missions, three schools, website and newsletter, accounting and payroll, bible studies, music classes, youth groups and athletics, organizations and other ministries, all of which are coordinated by our staff and volunteers. With the volume of work that is involved in running our numerous parish ministries, we are always in need of volunteers in order to keep our costs low. A variety of volunteer opportunities are outlined in the 2017 stewardship card. Office Expenses ($38,064) include our secretarial staff, copying, postage, paper, and equipment needed to communicate with all the faithful. Again, many thanks to the volunteers who assist with our office work. Education ($62,500) include our expenses for Religious Education and Greek Language programs. While tuition covers most of this expense, our community subsidizes our educational ministries through direct support and through the ministry of our Parent-Teacher Association. National Ministries ($55,578) includes our contribution to the Archdiocese as it is set by the National Clergy Laity Congress, and our contribution to the St. Iakovos Camp and Retreat Center that is set by the Metropolis Clergy Laity. The national ministries support our Metropolis staff, the Ecumenical Patriarchate, our Holy Cross School of Theology, and a number of Archdiocesan ministries whose details can be found on www.goarch.org. Maintenance ($115,406) includes our custodians, the utilities, snow removal, and routine maintenance that is constant with an aging building. Our facilities are in need repairs and updates, and once again the costs are kept low by many volunteers who give of their time and talents to maintain our building. What is not showing in the maintenance budget is the long term depreciation. The big ticket items that come up every few years such as the roofs, heating and AC units, parking lot, and structural repairs require us to set aside about $40,000 every year in anticipation of these long term expenses. Expense Budget 2017 Utilities & Maintenance, $115,406, 27% Ministry Programs, $158,863, 37% National Ministries, $55,578, 13% Education, $62,500, 14% Office Expenses, $38,064, 9% St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 5

Dear Fellow Parishioners, Happy New Year! Καλή Χρονιά! December made weather history the last four weekends. There were two weekends of snow, one of excessive cold and the final of 54 degrees. We hope everyone s Christmas was wonderful with your families. It is great when our college students are all under one roof and the extended family gathers in the warmth of our homes. December at church was wonderful. The Craft Show was a great success. Thanks to Toula Georgiopoulos who was in charge of the crafters. Thanks to George Papadopoulos as the guide. Thanks to Dina Katsoulis in charge of the kitchen and all the ladies and men who helped serve. We also thank our donors and our raffle supporters who allow us to continue our philanthropic endeavors. Our vespers of St. Spyridon on December 11th started off with snow but the service was heart warming and beautiful. On the feast day our church was filled with people. After the service we served over 150 guests for lunch. This festive Luncheon marked the beginning of the events leading to the 100th Anniversary celebration. Thank you to Georgia Xeros and Dana Vasilakos and all who helped. Thank you also to Roula Karampelas and Andrianna Kavvadas for organizing all the Lenten sweets. Thank you to the donors for everything. On December 18th, we attended the Metropolis Open House. It, as usual, was a great event although the frigid weather kept some away. Christmas Day came in all its glory with our church overflowing with parishioners, many of whom took communion and afterwards were so happy to greet one another in our community hall. The PTA had a great table filled with goodies. January is starting with our Vasilopita on January 1st. That day is also our Father s name day. Χρόνια του πολλά! That week is the Εpiphany on the 6th and St. John the Baptist on the 7th. The Metropolis Vasilopita Celebration will be held at Sts. Peter and Paul on January 8th. Let us all try to attend this beautiful event. The chapel of St. Antonios at the Metropolitan House will have vespers on January 16th and Divine Liturgy on the 17th and all are invited to attend. At this time I would like to express, on behalf of the Philoptochos, a big Thank you to Fr. Tilemehos, Presbytera Georgia and all who supported us in 2016. A special thanks to the Philoptochos ladies who are doing extraordinary things. We could not do it without you. A blessed New Year with health and happiness with your families. Feel free to include memories at St. Spyridon - at the festivals, Greek School, basketball games, Bible Study, serving in the altar, iconography class, trips to the monastery - just to give you some ideas. Include names of your children, parents, grandparents, friends. How did you meet your spouse? How did you choose St. Spyridon as your parish? SUNDAY SCHOOL As the holidays approach, the Sunday School students continue to work in their classrooms and learn about our Orthodox faith. We would like to thank all those who contribute to our food pantry, especially this time of year. Giving to those in need is something we should do year round, but most importantly during the holidays, when we are all remembering what we are thankful for and sharing that thankfulness with our communities. The Christmas Pageant took place Sunday December 18 th. Many thanks to all the students who volunteered to participate in the program as well as all the teachers who helped with getting our students in costume. A special thanks to Dana Vasilakos for coordinating this event and for all that she does for Sunday School. As we find ourselves at the end of another year, I would like to thank the Sunday School staff for all their support and hard work. Many of our Sunday School teachers have been volunteering in their roles for over 5 years, and some over 10. The dedication and commitment to plan weekly lessons and be present each Sunday is a great responsibility. I am so grateful that you have the passion for what you teach and that you share your talents with the students of St. Spyridon. Parents, we are all working together to provide your children and grandchildren with an excellent Orthodox foundation and hope that you will continue to bring them each week. We have much to look forward to in the New Year. My hope is for more parents to get involved and volunteer their time and share their talents with us. Whether you are able to help with one Sunday School class, or several, you are always welcome. There will be no class on Sunday, January 1st so that students can worship with their families. We will resume classes on January 8th with our tradition of cutting a Vasilopita in each classroom. We are in need of Vasilopites in each Sunday School class so please consider making one for your child s classroom. The best to all of your families from all of us in the Sunday School program and many blessings for the New Year. Zoe Kopanis, Sunday School Director St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 13

CHERUBS This month we had a great time preparing for Christmas. We celebrated St. Spyridon, made ornaments for our trees and had a wonderful little Christmas party. Thank you to all our parents and grandparents for their help and support. We wish our Cherubs family and our community a Merry Christmas and a healthy 2017. Janine Riley, Cherubs Advisor ALTAR BOYS During the feast of Saint Spyridon, our altar boys made us proud once again with their dedicated service during the Great Vespers and Hierarchical Divine Liturgy. Their impeccable service during the feast day and throughout the year continues to make our community proud of our altar boys. On Tuesday, December 27th, a few of the altar boys gathered to celebrate the feast of their patron saint, St. Stephen the First Martyr and Archdeacon. Following the Divine Liturgy they took a group photo and had lunch together. 14 The Voice
