2016 STEWARDSHIP MINISTRY HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL Please take time to think about making your yearly stewardship pledge to our Cathedral. This year s theme, those who seek the Lord shall never be in want of any good thing from the Artoclasia service, is especially meaningful because it emphasizes that all good things come from our Lord, and it is our obligation to support His Holy Church with a portion of the blessings that He has bestowed upon us. This month the 2016 Stewardship Campaign Packet will be mailed to you. However, you can go ahead now and make a pledge at this time. As in the past two years, the opportunity to sponsor a day on the church s calendar for a minimum pledge of $1,000 is offered. Please consider doing this now as a number of days have already been taken. The purpose of the visit is to provide a community engagement opportunity for the students, who will soon become the physicians, dentists, physical therapists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals of the future. The visitors will attend Divine Liturgy at Holy Trinity Cathedral on Sunday, February 28, and afterwards enjoy a light lunch in the gymnasium. Please welcome Dr. Skaff and her students when they come. HOLY FATHER AUXENTIUS OF THE MOUNTAIN lived during the reign of Saint Theodosius the Younger. In 442 he enlisted in the Fourth Military Company of the Scholarii, that is the Imperial Guard. Afterwards, he became a monk on a mountain in Bithynia not far from Chalcedon. He became the archimandrite of the monastics gathered there and proved himself to be most enduring in asceticism and most Orthodox in his faith. He reposed during the reign of the Emperor Leo the Great of Thrace, who reigned from 457 to 474. SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7 ATTENDANCE 65 ~ CANDLE AND TRAY COLLECTIONS $322 Message from Father George RENEWAL IN THE SPIRIT We read in today s Epistle: For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people. [2 Corinthians 6:16] Those of us who have been baptized in the Name of the Holy Trinity and chrismated in the Orthodox Church have received the fullness of God s grace and have the Holy Spirit residing within us. A small pamphlet entitled "Orthodox Spiritual Renewal" and produced by our Archdiocese a number of years ago addresses this and says: authentic Christian life is a synergy, a cooperation between man and God. Synergy, of course, does not mean that God does half of the work and man does the other half. Rather it means that while God does all of the saving work, man freely responds to God with his whole being. The goal of Christian life is to become aware of Christ and the Holy Spirit actively or consciously. As the baptized Christian grows from child to adult and participates in the sacramental life of the Church, having the Divine Liturgy as center, his personal response to God becomes crucial. Each Christian must personally re-affirm the baptismal pledge and himself to Christ. Spiritual renewal comes from this adult commitment to Christ, sharing the Eucharist, daily prayer, and sincere efforts to live the kind of life Christ lived and preached. As we bring our children to Christ through Baptism, we are reminded that it is not magic that happens. Professor George Mantzarides from the University of Thessaloniki writes in his book Orthodox Spiritual Life: The sacraments do not transform man magically but initiate him. That is they introduce him to the life of the Holy Spirit s grace. Whoever receives the grace of the sacraments is called to live and to reveal in his life the life of Christ. To the extent that man abandons himself to the grace of God, to the extent that he lives and behaves in accord with the form of the sacrament, he lives and progresses spiritually. We are called to recognize the gift of the Holy Spirit within us and do God s commandments. The hard part comes as we humans try to align our own free will with that of God s will. Are we doing the things that God would have us do? Are we saying the things that God would have us say? Are we going where God would have us go? Do we recognize the Spirit working in our brothers and sisters even if they do not realize it themselves? The Christian walk is not an easy one, yet as we were immersed into the waters of the Baptismal font we took on a new nature. And, as we were given the gift of the Seal of the Holy Spirit we were given a commission: we are all called to personally re-affirm the baptismal pledge and ourselves to Christ and to do the commandments of God. As we make this effort, the Grace of God will be revealed in our lives and hearts. It is when we can truly recognize the Grace of God in us that we will fully realize that we are indeed the Temple of the Holy Spirit.

Resurrection Apolytikion Tone 4 When the women Disciples of the Lord had learned from the Angel the joyful message of the Resurrection and had rejected the ancestral decision, they cried aloud to the Apostles triumphantly: Death has been despoiled, Christ God has risen, granting His great mercy to the world. Apolytikion for the Devout Man Tone 1 You proved to be a citizen of the desert, an angel in the flesh, and a wonderworker, O Auxentius, our God-bearing Father. By fasting, vigil, and prayer you obtained heavenly gifts, and you healed the sick and the souls of them that have recourse to you with faith. Glory to Him that has given you strength. Glory to Him that has crowned you. Glory to Him that works healings for all through you. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. THE EPISTLE 2 Corinthians 6:16-18, 7:1 Make your vows unto the Lord our God and perform them. God is known in Judah: His name is great in Israel. BRETHREN, you are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty." Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God. THE GOSPEL Matthew 15:21-28 At that time, Jesus went to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely possessed by a demon." But he did not answer her word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, "Send her away, for she is crying after us." He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." And he answered, "It is not fair to take the children s bread and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master s table." Then Jesus answered her, "O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire." And her daughter was healed instantly.
