Transcript:

Epiphany - Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral Tarpon Springs, Florida + Sunday, June 11, 2017 All Saints, June 11

WEEKLY MESSAGE The word saint (άγιος in Greek, also translated as holy ) means not earthly. It is a word the Church uses to describe someone, or even something, that is associated with heaven rather than earth. What do I mean? A thing that is holy (such as the Altar Table in the Cathedral) has only one purpose, and that purpose is related to God and not the world. A person who is called a saint is more concerned with living a life for and with God rather than for and with the world. There are saints, and there are Saints. I am often asked, What is a saint, and how does someone become a Saint? On the Sunday of All Saints, which is always the Sunday following the Feast of Pentecost, the Church commemorates all the holy men and women, most unknown, who have shown themselves to have placed God first in their lives while on Earth. There were some, the known holy men and women, who excelled in their love for God while living either through martyrdom (bearing witness to God sometimes even to death) or confessing Him before others, or living holy and righteous lives, that the Church bestows the title of Saint and urges the faithful to imitate their loyalty to God. Then there are the unknown holy men and women, known only to God, who lived quiet lives dedicated to God above all else in their lives. They were teachers, janitors, mothers, fathers, priests, bishops, monks, nuns, lawyers, farmers, ranchers. normal people just like you and me, who struggled against the ways of the world in favor the ways of the Lord. These Saints and saints were more interested in Heavenly things than earthly things. Saint Paul teaches we are all called to be saints (Romans 1.7) and reminds us we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, (Hebrews 12.1) as inspiration to remain faithful to Jesus Christ. We are not alone in being tempted by our passions (wealth, power, anger, selfishness etc.), since all the saints were also tempted. Be inspired on this Sunday of All Saints to reclaim the courage to become the loyal saint you were called by Christ to become. Be comforted today by being reminded that all saints have temptation. Be strong today and decide to place God first in all things in your life. Be blessed by God who said, Everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 10.32)

EPISTLE Hebrews 11:33-40; 12:1-2 B rethren, all the saints through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated - of whom the world was not worthy - wandering over deserts and mountains and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfection of our faith. GOSPEL Matthew 10:32-33; 37-38; 19:27-30 T he Lord said to his disciples, "Every one who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny him before my Father who is in heaven. He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me." Then Peter said in reply, "Lo, we have left everything and followed you. What then shall we have?" Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of man shall sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. But many that are first will be last, and the last first."

Resurrectional Apolytikion From on high did You descend, O merciful Lord, for us did You endure three days in the tomb, that we may be released from passions in this world, You who are our Resurrection and our life, Glory unto You O Lord. For the Saints Your Church is arrayed in the holy blood of Your Martyrs who witnessed throughout the world, as though in purple and fine linen. Through them she cries to You, Christ our God, "Send down to Your people Your tender love, grant peace from above to Your commonwealth, and to our souls Your great mercy." Of the Church As rule of the faith and picture of gentleness, and teacher of temperance you were exhibited to your flock, by the truth of the evidence, Thus you acquired the lofty through humility, abundance through poverty. Father and Hierarch Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved. Kontakion O Planter of creation, Lord, to You does the entire world bring as an offering the God-bearing martyr Saints, as being nature's first fruits. At their earnest entreaties, keep Your Church in a state of profoundest peace, through the Theotokos, O Lord abundantly merciful.

Saints and Feasts of the Week ALL SAINTS Τhis commemoration began as the Sunday (Synaxis) of All Martyrs; to them were added all the ranks of Saints who bore witness (the meaning of "Martyr" in Greek) to Christ in manifold ways, even if occasion did not require the shedding of their blood. In this celebration, we reverently honor and call blessed all the Righteous, the Prophets, Apostles, Martyrs, Confessors, Shepherds, Teachers, and Holy Monastics, both men and women alike, known and unknown, who have been added to the choirs of the Saints and shall be added, from the time of Adam until the end of the world, who have been perfected in piety and have glorified God by their holy lives. PROPHET ELISSEUS The Prophet Elisseus, the son of Saphat, was from the town of Abel-me-oul and had been a husbandman. In the year 908 BC, at God's command, the Prophet Elias anointed him to be Prophet in his stead. This happened while Elisseus was plowing his land, having 12 oxen under yoke. Straightway, Elisseus slew the oxen and cooked them, using the wooden plough and the other instruments of husbandry as firewood; then he gave the oxen as food to the people. Bidding farewell to his parents, he followed Elias and served him until the latter was taken up as it were into Heaven. When Elisseus received his teacher's mantle and the grace of his prophetic spirit twofold, he demonstrated whose disciple he was through the miracles he wrought and through all that is related of him in the Fourth Book of Kings. He departed full of days and was buried in Samaria, about the year 839 BC. But even after his death, God glorified him; for after the passage of a year, when some Israelites were carrying a dead man for burial and suddenly saw a band of Moabites, they cast the dead man on the grave of the Prophet. No sooner had the dead man touched the Prophet's bones, than he came to life and stood on his feet (IV Kings 13:20-21).
