Saint Katherine www.saint-katherines.org 3149 Glen Carlyn Road Falls Church, VA 22041 DOXA The monthly newsletter of Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church Volume 11, Number 6 JUNE 2013 WE SPEAK YOUR LANGUAGE When the Most High came down and confounded tongues of men at Babel, He divided the nations. When He dispensed the tongues of fire, He called all to unity, and with one voice we glorify the Most Holy Spirit (Kontakion of Pentecost). LANGUAGE CAN DIVIDE OR UNITE. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ took place to once again unite people to God in the Heavenly Kingdom. The story of Pentecost is found in the book of The Acts of the Apostles. In Chapter Two, we are told that the Apostles of our Lord were gathered together in one place. Suddenly, a sound came from heaven like a rushing wind, filling the entire house where they were sitting. Then, tongues of fire appeared, and one sat upon each one of Apostles. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as directed by the Spirit (Acts 2:1-4). This miraculous event occurred on the Jewish Feast of Pentecost, celebrated by the Jews on the 50th day after the Passover as the culmination of the Feast of Weeks (Exodus 34:22; Deuteronomy 16:10). The Feast of Weeks began on the third day after the Passover with the presentation of the first harvest sheaves to God, and it concluded on Pentecost with the offering of two loaves of unleavened bread, representing the first products of the harvest (Leviticus 23:17-20; Deuteronomy 16:9-10). Since the Jewish Feast of Pentecost was a great pilgrimage feast, many people from throughout the Roman Empire were gathered in Jerusalem on this day. When the people in Jerusalem heard the sound, they came together and heard their own languages being spoken by the Apostles (Acts 2:5-6). The people were amazed, knowing that some of those speaking were Galileans, and not men who would normally speak many different languages. They wondered what this meant, and some even thought the Apostles were drunk (Acts 2:7-13). Peter, hearing these remarks, stood up and addressed the crowd. He preached to the people regarding the Old Testament prophecies about the coming of the Holy Spirit. He spoke about Jesus Christ and His death and glorious Resurrection. Great conviction fell upon the people, and they asked the Apostles, What shall we do? Peter said to them, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38-39). The Bible records that on that day about 3,000 were baptized. Following, the book of Acts states that the newly baptized continued daily to hear the teaching of the Apostles, as the early Christians met together for fellowship, the breaking of bread, and for prayer. Many wonderful signs and miracles were done through the Apostles, and the Lord added to the Church daily those who were being saved (Acts 2:42-47). This historical event almost reminds me of our Resurrection services. Our church was filled beyond capacity, the Meletis Charuhas Hall was also past capacity, the overflow from our buildings filled the front of our driveway. (Continued on page 10) INSIDE THIS ISSUE... PASCHAL BLESSINGS ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ ΑΝΕΣΤΗ! CHRISTOS ANESTI! I d like to share a small story and offer thanks to those who worked so tirelessly to ensure the success of our community's observance of Holy Pascha. On the eve of the Anastasi, several hours before most parishioners arrived, I walked into the Sanctuary to prepare for the long evening and the most holy of services that lay ahead. Although the church was totally dark, I was greeted by the glimmer of holy light emanating from the 18k gold halos adorning the images of the saints and prophets looking down upon us from the dome of the Church. As my eyes began to adjust to the dark surroundings, and although I ve been in the sanctuary countless hundreds of times since the renovation a few years back, the grandeur and majesty of the iconography coupled with the beauty of our church overwhelmed me for a moment. So much so, that I offered a silent prayer of thanks for this precious gift the magnificent edifice to our Lord that is our Church. I was filled with a sense of how fortunate our community is to be blessed with such an incredibly beautiful sanctuary. As I stood in silent reflection, taking in the splendor that is our Church, a parishioner who had arrived early to secure a seat walked up behind me and asked, What are you looking at in the dark? Βλέπω ένα όνειρο ( I m looking at a dream), I replied almost absentmindedly. It is a dream come true, isn't it? was the simple, yet heartfelt reply given under the merciful gaze of our Pantocrator. How blessed we are! In many respects, the Paschal season represents the best of who we are as a parish. The pervasive sense of community that is so evident in everything we do is especially abundant during Pascha. On behalf of the Parish Council, I would like to thank everyone who made our Holy Week events and festivities such a success. To name only a few, our thanks go to Charlie Euripides for his most excellent lentil soup provided on Good Friday and to John Gouvis for a wonderful fish dinner on Palm Sunday and for the equally delectable magiritsa all of us enjoyed in the wee hours of Easter morning. Our thanks to everyone who folded palms for Palm Sunday; to Sophia Tsangali and everyone who participated in adorning the Epitaphio and to the GOYAns who carried it; to our altar boys, choir, and chanters; to the girls who served as myrrhbearers; to the ladies Philoptochos for all their excellent baked goods; to Androula Demetriou for the Easter eggs and to Ramona Velezis and her daughters, Theodora Black and Martha Velezis, who dyed them; to GOYA for donating the tulle bags and to Andrea Ballard, Presv. Pauline, Christina Vazquez, and Maria Wills who put all the Easter eggs in them; to our custodian Roberto Medina and his dedicated staff whose ceaseless efforts to go above and beyond the call of duty are always appreciated; to Ted Theocharis who helped us fix a last-minute problem with the video feed displayed to the overflow crowds outdoors during the weekend. Thanks to Presv. Pauline for her tireless efforts to keep the community abreast of latest developments and schedules via our website, DOXA, and emails. Our esteem and gratitude to our Proistamenos Fr. Costas, Fr. Patrick, and Fr. Christodoulos for most ably shepherding their flock through Holy Week. Thanks to Aris and Themis Chronis, Christine Varoutsos, Steve Veletsis, Jim Ballard and George Mavromatakis who all pitched in to sell candles outdoors; to Pierre Tavoularis for augmenting the Parish Council at virtually every service during Holy Week; and to George Charuhas for also assisting us on Holy Friday and Saturday. Our thanks to those parishioners who followed our instructions even when it may have been inconvenient...and bless those who were less than cooperative. Last, but not least, my special thanks to the men and women of our parish whose commitment to the community is embodied in their service as Parish Council members. We are so very grateful to everyone who worked so hard to make our Holy Week so memorable. The fact I m worried about excluding someone is testament to the sheer number of parishioners involved in making our observance of Holy Pascha such a success. Thank you! CATECHETICAL (SUNDAY) SCHOOL GRADUATION DAY IS JUNE 9. There will be only one Divine Liturgy at 10:30am this special day. Sunday School will be in session at 9:30am and our traditional graduation party will be held in Founders Hall following the Liturgy. Thank you, teachers, for your continuing participation in our Sunday School mission. Many thanks to all the parents and friends of the Catechetical School for bringing your children to school, and helping us fulfill our pledge toward the Icon of Christ and the Children. This group effort has been a wonderful way for us to express our gratitude through the beautification of God s Holy House. We wish all the Dads a happy Father s Day on Sunday June 16. Summer begins on June 21. Vacation from school will have commenced, and children will begin enjoying more of the outdoors and play. There are some very special days on the Church calendar: Holy Pentecost is celebrated on June 23, the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist on June 24, the feast day of Saints Peter and Saint Paul on June 29 and all Saints Day on June 30. It would be fulfilling for our parents and children to share conversation about those very special Church days. Just so our parents know ahead of time, Catechetical School will begin on September 15, with registration occurring on September 8. However, until then, children and parents can have some wonderful and profitable time together reading and discussing Holy Scripture. We do wish all of our parents and children a very restful and enjoyable summer. We look forward to seeing all of our children back in September. Until then, we look forward to worshiping with you in Church over the summer months. ORATORICAL FESTIVAL (by Ray Vazquez) SAINT KATHERINE SUNDAY SCHOOL STUDENTS, Stephanie Vazquez and Cameron Edgington, participated in the District Oratorical Festival on April 20 in Newport News. Our students were 2 of 12 who competed at the event and both earned an Honorable Mention. Congratulations! It was the first time competing at the District level for both of them. I want to thank them for their hard work in preparing for the event. All of our Junior Oratorical Festival participants this year, Stephanie Vazquez, Cameron Edgington, and Eleni Zervos will present their speeches, in church, after Liturgy. PAIDEIA HELLO AND ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ ΑΝΕΣΤΗ! I would like to thank all the parents of PAIDEIA for taking such good care of the teachers and me during Teacher Appreciation Week. The parents spoiled us with coffee, breakfast, lunch and dessert, as well as with wonderful presents. Thank you for your generosity and cooperation as we strive to make PAIDEIA the best it can be. In May, the children made crafts and presents for the wonderful mothers of our school in light of Mother's Day. We learned about the environment and recycling, farm animals and pets, wild animals, and dinosaurs! The children were taught about May Day (Πρωτομαγιά) and the customs and traditions that go along with this day. The last week of May we played outdoors with our children, introducing them to traditional Greek games. They had a wonderful time! For the first time, enrollment for the next school year (2013-2014) will be done before closing of the school for summer. This way our school can start the next school year more organized and better than ever. Smart Board at PAIDEIA. It is pertinent to use technology in οur schools in today's day and age. PAIDEIA has been using the Smart Board since the beginning of the school year, enabling our students to learn both the Greek and English in a fun and resourceful way. We have set up Greek and English programs for the pre-school and toddler aged children. The children were deeply enthused when they used the Smart Board to learn the ABCs, 123s, colors, and drawing pictures. They used it as a big ipad and had a blast, making learning fun. Two New Programs for PAIDEIA 1. We have combined two classrooms into one classroom in Founders Hall so we can make the ideal space to have our Summer Camp this year. This way we will be able to welcome, for the first time, the 2-year old group. Thus, our Summer Camp will be for ages 2-5. 2. This year during the week of the Vacation Bible Camp (June 24-28), we are offering an extended camp in the afternoon from 1:30pm to 3:00pm. This afternoon session will focus more on Greek Language, History, and Customs of our culture. The age group is from 4-14 yrs and the fee is $40 for the entire week. VACATION BIBLE CAMP VACATION BIBLE CAMP (VBC) begins on Monday, June 24 and continues through Friday, June 28. Please bring your children to (at 10:00am), and pick them up from (at 1:30pm), the church. This year s theme is Top 10 Things I Like about Being an Orthodox Christian, in honor of VBC s 10-year anniversary. VBC will serve lunch at Bailey s Crossroads Homeless Shelter on Thursday, June 27. We look forward to spending a wonderful week with our Saint Katherine children. 4

In addition to these times, a Memorial Service is offered for all the departed faithful on four Saturdays of Souls. Therefore, we are called to pray for those who have fallen asleep in the Lord on Saturday, June 22. Please take time to prepare a list of deceased loved ones for whom you wish the priests to pray. GREEK SCHOOL ONE AGAIN THE SCHOOL YEAR arrived at a fruitful end. MISSIONS AND OUTREACH FOCUS Appalachia Mission in the Mountains The Washington DC Missions and Outreach Committee is calling for volunteers to support a Fellowship of Orthodox Christians United to Serve (FOCUS) Appalachia project in rural North Carolina from August 22 25. This mission will be led by Fr. Costa. Mitchell and Yancey Counties in western North Carolina are some of the most economically challenged areas of the country. The job base, textiles and furniture manufacturing, has moved off-shore over the last 30 years, leaving unemployment rates of 12.2% (that s over 4% higher than the average U.S. city). As the tax base has eroded, so has the ability of the region to supply social services to those suffering. FOCUS Appalachia aids the poor and elderly in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, filling in the gaps where governmental assistance fails. Projects will depend upon the experience of those who volunteer; however, no skills are required to participate. Previously, groups have installed siding, remodeled a bathroom, built handicapped ramps, painted house exterior and interiors, replaced roofing, and done yard work. We ask that you bring a positive attitude. You are guaranteed to have a fulfilling week! Cost of Participation: $200 plus transportation, which covers food and modest lodging. FOCUS will provide a site coordinator, tools, and the required building materials. Transportation. Fr. Costas will take 8-9 volunteers in the Saint Katherine church van. Others will carpool. Lodging. Groups are housed at the Pinebridge Inn, near the worksites. The Pinebridge Inn offers dormitory-style housing, kitchen facilities, and group meeting areas. Volunteers must bring their own bedding, towels, and toiletries. Meals. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the mission will be provided by FOCUS North America. Tentatively, breakfast is served at 7:15am, a sack lunch will be taken to the worksite, and dinner is served at 6:00pm. Volunteers. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old (there is no upper age limit). FOCUS will assign projects based on the various skills the volunteer group brings. You do not need to possess specific construction skills to take part in the mission, although skilled volunteers are always needed. Registration. Please contact Missions Committee members, Daphne Papamichael (cyprusd@aol.com) or Stacey Kazacos (Stacey@sent.com), to receive a registration form via email (and a release form, that must be signed by a parent, for volunteers under the age of 18). Registration deadline and payment. The registration deadline is August 1. Volunteers should submit their $200 payment in full when they register. 7

SPRING GREEK FESTIVAL May 31, June 1 and 2 11:00am - 10:00pm DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE (by Jane Moore, Pres.) HELLE SISTERS HAD A WONDERFUL TIME at our meeting in May! We celebrated with a Tea Theme and enjoyed all different types of savories and sweets. We elected our 2013-2014 Executive Board: Karen Polizos (President), Katina Doulis (Administrative Vice President), Rosalie Georgeadis (Membership Vice President), Barbara Koltos (Treasurer), Helen Spanos (Recording Secretary), and Lynn Francis (Corresponding Secretary). Congratulations to everyone as they embark upon another successful Helle Chapter year! Also in May, we assisted the AHEPANs with their Annual Golf Tournament at the Westfields Golf Course by manning the registration table and selling raffle tickets and mulligans. A great time was had by all. On a more serious note, several Helle Sisters attended the annual wreath-laying and prayer ceremony at the graves of Hellenes and Philhellenes interred at Arlington National Cemetery during Memorial Day weekend. This has been a tradition carried out by the Washington Metropolitan Area AHEPA Families since 1949. In addition to attending our District #3 Convention in Annapolis on June 29, we are also looking forward to relaxing and enjoying each other s company during a Girls Day Out at the Lake Anna home of Lynn Francis on Saturday, June 8. Now that my Presidency has come to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in Helle Chapter, AHEPA Chapter #438, and the entire Saint Katherine community for their contributions and support of the philanthropic work we have done as a Chapter. I know that the new Board will continue to accomplish many more new and wonderful things in the coming year! Best wishes to all! (Continued from page 1) God spoke your language. Now it is up to us to continue speaking in the language of love, hope, and salvation. We will always welcome those who have drifted away from God and those who have just discovered the Lord. I know that the Holy Spirit is alive at Saint Katherine. I see it in the actions of so many of our people, all those who volunteer giving of their time and talent to show the love of God to the world. I ask all of you to remember that we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ every week during the Divine Liturgy. May the grace and blessings of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit be with you. Let us live the words of the Apolytikion of Pentecost: Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fisherman all-wise, by sending down upon them the Holy Spirit, and through them, drawing all the world into Your net. O Loving One, glory be to you. Yours in Christ, 10

BOOK REVIEW Georgia McKinney Speaking to God. Archbishop Demetrios of America. Translated by Kevin Pluchino. New York, NY: Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. 2012. 164 pages. Paperback. $12.95. Speaking to God is the English translation of a prayer book written by the then-young Archbishop and first published over 50 years ago in Athens by the Christian Student Union. A third Greek edition of this work was printed in 2011 and quickly sold out, proving its ageless appeal. Organized into five Cycles, the Archbishop s book is a series of personal and prayerful reflections that speak to universal themes and feelings: The First Cycle of this edition contains prayers by which we ask God to teach us how to pray. In the Second Cycle, we talk to him about ourselves and our problems. In the Third Cycle, we sing praises of His glory and His majesty. In the Fourth, we entreat Him on behalf of our brothers and sisters, while in the Fifth Cycle the prayers address the need for a true approach to the Gospel (p. 6) Originally published when His Eminence was in his thirties, he was clearly writing out of a deep understanding of and concern for students and young adults. He offers the book to our beloved people, but especially to the youth, as if it has been written for them, here in America, today (p. 4). Build up my soul to be strong and enduring, diminish my soft attitude toward evil, negative influences. Put bright people beside me. Give me the grace to discover them. Their presence is so indispensable to me. The radiance of their gracious personalities is what my soul needs. O God-man, increase Your influence over me. Don t let other hands shape my heart. Don t let barbaric, wicked feet tread the inner temple of my heart (p. 51). His Eminence also reminds the young of the power of things that they might experience infrequently: In the silence I feel You near me, my Adorable Lord, Creator of tranquility. I give You thanks for the absence of every sound this evening. You are beside me and that s enough. God, Ocean of tranquility, You see my soul in a state of glorifying you. You see my heart that is grateful to you for this quietness. O You, who have the power to create a silence that is more eloquent than our vain human babbling (p. 84). In the print version, don t miss the table of contents there in the very back; you ll want it when picking up the book again, to return to a personal favorite or a prayer appropriate to the events of one s day, such as Prayer for the sick or Forgive those who hurt me. There is also an index to the 69 references from Holy Scripture scattered throughout. All in all, the modern witness of Orthodox Christianity is now being especially boosted as faithful works like this and Everyday Saints and Other Stories (see the January 2013 DOXA) are being made available to the global English-speaking audience. γ 2). Aμήν. Grief is not a lack of faith. Grief is a normal reaction to the loss of a significant someone or something in your life. Unfortunately, there are no written scripts for how to grieve or for how long to grieve. Each person grieves in his or her unique way at his or her own pace. Last month, we shared feelings often experienced while grieving. This month, we share the following. PHYSICAL SENSATIONS OFTEN EXPERIENCED WHILE GRIEVING An empty feeling in the stomach Loss of appetite Tightness in chest or throat Fatigue Insomnia Over-sensitivity to noise Heavy and repeated sighing Lack of muscle power Irritability Tearfulness Shortness of breath Dry mouth THOUGHTS OFTEN EXPERIENCED WHILE GRIEVING Disbelief. We commit ourselves to stewardship as a way of thanking God for all His blessings returning to Him a portion of the time, talent, and treasure He has given us. Good stewardship of time means we share some the 168 hours in a week with God and caring for others. Good stewardship of talent means we identify our talents and use them to glorify God and help other people. Good stewardship of treasure means we give a portion of our income to the Church and other charities. During the year 2013, we ask that everyone consider fulfilling their stewardship on a weekly basis. This will allow our church to better plan activities and expenses. I (my family) pledge(s) $ per week of financial stewardship to Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church.
