Today s Scripture Readings Romans 2:10-16 Brethren, glory and honor and peace for every one who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. For God shows no partiality. All who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. When Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus. Προφήτης Ελισσαίος (14 Ιουνίου) Βιογραφία: Ο προφήτης Ελισσαίος ήταν γιος του μεγαλοκτηματία Σαφάτ, από το χωριό Αελμούθ ή Αβελμεολά. Τον Ελισσαίο συναντάμε μέσα στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη σαν υπηρέτη του Προφήτη Ηλία (βλέπε 20 Ιουλίου). Όταν εκείνος με θαυμαστό τρόπο έφυγε προς τον Κύριο, ο Ελισσαίος συνέχισε το προφητικό έργο του Ηλία, και μάλιστα με πολλά θαύματα. Ενδεικτικά εδώ θα αναφέρουμε ένα. Κάποτε ήλθε στον Ελισσαίο μια χήρα γυναίκα, που πριν λίγο είχε χάσει τον άνδρα της, και του λέει: «Ο άνδρας μου πέθανε και συ γνωρίζεις ότι σεβόταν το Θεό. Και όμως, ένας άσπλαχνος δανειστής του ήλθε τώρα και, επειδή δεν έχουμε να τον πληρώσουμε, ζητάει να πάρει τους γιους μου δούλους του». Ο Ελισσαίος συγκινημένος της είπε: «Τι μπορώ να σου κάνω; Πες μου, τι έχεις στο σπίτι σου»; Η χήρα του απάντησε: «Τίποτα. Μόνο ένα αγγείο λάδι». Τότε ο Ελισσαίος της λέει να πάει να δανειστεί από τους γείτονες όσα μπορεί περισσότερα άδεια αγγεία. Έπειτα, να κλείσει την πόρτα του σπιτιού της, και μαζί με τους γιους της να γεμίσουν τα αγγεία αυτά από το δικό τους αγγείο με λάδι. Έτσι και έγινε. Αφού δανείστηκε πολλά άδεια αγγεία, τα γέμισε με λάδι από το δικό της, που στο τέλος βρέθηκε και αυτό γεμάτο! Έτσι, πούλησε την άφθονη εκείνη ποσότητα λαδιού, πλήρωσε το χρέος και έμειναν αρκετά χρήματα γι' αυτήν και τα παιδιά της. Ο Ελισσαίος πέθανε επί βασιλέως Ιωάς και τον έθαψε με πολύ θρήνο ο λαός του Ισραήλ στη Σεβαστούπολη της Σαμάρειας. Ἀπολυτίκιον (Ἦχος δ. Ὁ ὑψωθεῖς ἐν τῷ Σταυρῷ.) Ὡς ὑποφήτην ἀληθῆ τοῦ Σωτῆρος, καὶ τῶν ἐν νόμῳ παιδευτὴν καὶ φωστῆρα, τοὶς πόρρω σὲ ἐδήλωσεν ὁ τόκος σου σοφὲ σὺ γὰρ κληρωσάμενος, τοῦ Θεσβίτου τὴν χάριν, θαύμασι διέπρεψας, καὶ δυνάμεσι πλείσταις. Καὶ νῦν ἀπαύστως φύλαττε ἠμᾶς, ὢ Ἐλισαῖε, Προφῆτα θεσπέσιε. Κοντάκιον (Ἦχος β. Τὰ ἄνω ζητῶν.) Προφήτης Θεοῦ, ἐδείχθεις διπλασίονα, τὴν χάριν λαβών, τὴν ὄντως ἐπαξίαν σοι, Ἐλισσαῖε μακάριε. Support parents of children with special needs (ie, Autism, ADHD, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Illness, Food Allergies, Chronic Illnesses to name a few). This program will focus on the emotional healing of the group members. They will learn strategies for structured routines, child emotional awareness, self-soothing, self-care, better communication and relationship with their children. We are introducing a new group for Moms and Expectant Moms to build friendships, share resources, and provide support for the life changes that come from starting a family. We anticipate that the Moms Group will meet once a month with the intention of helping you embrace your role with more confidence and to make this transition smoother, easier and more enjoyable. Moreover, it s a great way for new families to get to know the Archangel Michael Church community and all that we offer!! We envision the group engaging in parenting discussions, provide a forum for sharing experiences, building relationships, exploring our faith and offering valuable resources. The school year is over, and summer has arrived. God wants us to enjoy a more relaxed schedule in the summer; He wants us to enjoy good weather, leisurely activities, vacations, and all else that summer brings. However, for many Orthodox in America, summer is too easily a time when we forget God. Sunday worship may become more irregular; prayer and fasting may seem incompatible with summer activities, or perhaps irrelevant. I assure you - and the wisdom of the Church assures us - that the joy of summer will be even more abundant if we consciously keep Christ at the center of all our activities. This might not be expressed in observable ways; it has far more to do with our unseen, inner stance before God. How can we stay connected to God and even deepen our relationship with Him during summer? In many ways, but above all, through maintaining a regular rule of prayer. In the least, we can begin each day with prayer - a way of stepping forward into the day with firm footing and open eyes. Can we fully embrace any given day without first acknowledging the One who gives us each day? Perhaps we can read the daily prescribed Scripture readings (see the Daily Readings app or subscribe to receive daily readings via email through www.goarch.org). Perhaps we can consider beginning the day with St Philaret s wellknown morning prayer below. St Philaret had a special gift for composing prayers that aptly express our innermost longing for God. Prayer at the Beginning of the Day By St Philaret of Moscow (+1867) Lord, grant me to meet the coming day in peace. Help me in all things to rely upon Your holy will; in every hour of the day reveal Your will to me. Bless my dealings with all who surround me. Teach me to treat all that comes to me throughout the day with peace of soul and with firm conviction that Your will governs all. In all my words and deeds, guide my thoughts and feelings. In unforeseen events, let me not forget that all things are under Your care. Teach me to act firmly and wisely, without embittering and embarrassing others. Give me strength to bear the fatigue of the coming day with all that it will bring. Direct my will, teach me to pray, pray You Yourself in me. Amen.
