Archangel Michael Church Η Εκκλησία του Αρχαγγέλου Μιχαήλ 100 Fairway Drive, Port Washington, NY 11050 Phone: (516) 944-3180 Web Site: www.archangelmichaelchurch.org Clergy: Fr John Lardas, Fr Joshua Pappas, Fr Dennis Strouzas Sunday of Pentecost - Κυριακὴ τῆς Πεντηκοστῆς June 4, 2017 Have We Received the Holy Spirit? Blessed Pentecost! The Holy Spirit - God Himself - has been poured into the life of the Church in dramatic fashion beginning with Pentecost. Moreover, we ve all received this astonishing gift through chrismation, a part of the baptismal service. But to what extent is the gift of the Holy Spirit a tangible part of our lives? To what extent do we feel the Spirit? To what extent have we worked diligently, both internally and externally, to open ourselves to the power of the Spirit? Below is an excerpt from an Athonite elder s sermon (Elder Aimilianos) that ponders such questions: God will not bring something to fruition that we have not had a hand in cultivating; and what we cultivate grows directly from the seeds we ve sown within ourselves. Our capacity for the Holy Spirit depends very much on the simplicity of our hearts, on the purity of our thoughts, on our spiritual reading and meditation, and on the degree we empty ourselves. Self-emptying - kenosis - is the great mystery of human freedom, which God never violates. We are filled to the degree that we are empty, to the degree that we voluntarily make room within ourselves for God. The more we ve prepared, the more room we ve made, the more we ve suffered, the more we ve loved, the more we ve cried out for help, the more we ll have received God Himself. Needless to say, all this remains hidden behind a cheerful countenance, beneath a smile, beneath the depths of true joy. How does our capacity for God reveal itself in our lives? Not just in our spiritual lives, but in our everyday life, our daily routine? When can we say that we ve really received the Holy Spirit? Only on the basis of our external behavior, on the basis of our everyday routine, can we judge whether or not we have the Holy Spirit. What are the criteria of a life steeped in the Holy Spirit? Joyfulness of heart, which comes from the assurance of God s presence in all circumstances; a radical inner change toward peace; an intimate friendship with God, in which He leads us by the hand. What a wonderful thing, that human beings should become instruments whereby God can be glorified and revealed! And now, it is Pentecost. As we kneel during the three long prayers, may our kneeling not be merely a moment of discomfort, a moment of time empty for not having tasted the fruit of the Spirit, but rather a cry: Come, Holy Spirit; come and dwell in me.

Megalynarion (Grave Mode) Without sustaining corruption you still conceived a child, * and lent your flesh to the Word and general Artificer. * Mother who knew no man, O Virgin Theotokos, receptacle and space of your uncontained and infinite Creator, you do we magnify.

Acts of the Apostles 2:1-11 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. And they were amazed and wondered, saying, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontos and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God." Ἐξίσταντο δὲ πάντες καὶ ἐθαύµαζον λέγοντες πρὸς ἀλλήλους Οὐκ ἰδοὺ πάντες οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ λαλοῦντες Γαλιλαῖοι; Καὶ πῶς ἡµεῖς ἀκούοµεν ἕκαστος τῇ ἰδίᾳ διαλέκτῳ ἡµῶν ἐν ᾗ ἐγεννήθηµεν, Πάρθοι καὶ Μῆδοι καὶ 'Ελαµῖται, καὶ οἱ κατοικοῦντες τὴν Μεσοποταµίαν, 'Ιουδαίαν τε καὶ Καππαδοκίαν, Πόντον καὶ τὴν 'Ασίαν, Φρυγίαν τε καὶ Παµφυλίαν, Αἴγυπτον καὶ τὰ µέρη τῆς Λιβύης τῆς κατὰ Κυρήνην, καὶ οἱ ἐπιδηµοῦντες Ρωµαῖοι, 'Ιουδαῖοί τε καὶ προσήλυτοι, Κρῆτες καὶ Αραβες, ἀκούοµεν λαλούντων αὐτῶν ταῖς ἡµετέραις γλώσσαις τὰ µεγαλεῖα τοῦ Θεοῦ; John 7:37-52; 8:12 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, "If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, 'Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.' " Now this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. When they heard these words, some of the people said, "This is really the prophet." Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Is the Christ to come from Galilee? Has not the scripture said that the Christ is descended from David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" So there was a division among the people over him. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. The officers then went back to the chief priest and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring him?" The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this man!" The Pharisees answered them, "Are you led astray, you also? Have any of the authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, who do not know the law, are accursed." Nikodemos, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, "Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?" They replied, "Are you from Galilee too? Search and you will see that no prophet is to rise from Galilee." Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
