JOHN THE THEOLOGAN April 30, 2017

APOSTLE JAMES THE BROTHER OF ST. JOHN THE THEOLOGAN The Holy Apostle James, the son of Zebedee, was the brother of Saint John the Theologian, and one of the Twelve Apostles. He and his brother, Saint John, were called to be Apostles by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who called them the Sons of Thunder (Mark 3:17). It was this James, with John and Peter, who witnessed the Raising of the Daughter of Jairus, the Lord s Transfiguration on Mount Tabor, and His agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. Saint James, after the Descent of the Holy Spirit, preached in Spain and in other lands, and then he returned to Jerusalem. He openly and boldly preached Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world, and he denounced the Pharisees and the Scribes with the words of Holy Scripture, reproaching them for their malice of heart and unbelief. The Jews could not prevail against Saint James, and so they hired the sorcerer Hermogenes to dispute with the apostle and refute his arguments that Christ was the promised Messiah Who had come into the world. The sorcerer sent to the apostle his pupil Philip, who was converted to belief in Christ. Then Hermogenes himself became persuaded of the power of God, he burned his books of magic, accepted holy Baptism and became a true follower of Christ. The Jews persuaded Herod Agrippa (40-44) to arrest the Apostle James and sentence him to death (Acts 12:1-2). Eusebius provides 2 27

some of the details of the saint s execution (CHURCH HISTORY II, 9). Saint James calmly heard the death sentence and continued to bear witness to Christ. One of the false witnesses, whose name was Josiah, was struck by the courage of Saint James. He came to believe in Jesus Christ as the Messiah. When they led the apostle forth to execution, Josiah fell at his feet, repenting of his sin and asking forgiveness. The apostle embraced him, gave him a kiss and said, Peace and forgiveness to you. Then Josiah confessed his faith in Christ before everyone, and he was beheaded with Saint James in the year 44 at Jerusalem. Saint James was the first of the Apostles to die as a martyr. 26 3

Sunday, April 30, 2017 Hymns Following the Gospel (Small Entrance) Apolytikion for Holy Myrrhbearers Sunday in the Second Mode When You did descend unto death, O Life Immortal, then did You slay Hades with the lightning of Your Divinity. And when You did also raise the dead out of the nethermost depths, all the powers in the Heavens cried out: O Lifegiver, Christ our God, glory be to You. Apolytikion for Holy Myrrhbearers Sunday in the Second Mode The noble Joseph, taking You immaculate Body down from the Tree, and having wrapped It in pure linen and spices, laid It for burial in a new tomb. But on the third day You did arise, O Lord, granting great mercy to the world. Apolytikion for Holy Myrrhbearers Sunday in the Second Mode Unto the myrrh-bearing women did the Angel cry out as he stood by the grave: Myrrh oils are for the dead, but Christ has proved to be a stranger to corruption. But cry out: The Lord is risen, granting great mercy to the world. St. Vasilios 1 st Mode Your message was carried throughout the world. As it received your mighty word, By which you divinely made manifest And clarified the nature of existing things You set in order the customs of men, You who are royal priesthood! Holy Father, intercede with Christ our God To grant us His great mercy. Seasonal Kontakion in the Plagal Fourth Mode Though You went down into the tomb, You destroyed Hades' power, and You rose the victor, Christ God, saying to the myrrh-bearing women, "Hail!" and granting peace to Your disciples, You who raise up the fallen. EPISTLE READINGS Prokeimenon. Second Mode. Psalm 117.14,18. The Lord is my strength and my song. Verse: The Lord has chastened me sorely. The reading is from Acts of the Apostles 6:1-7. IN THOSE DAYS, when the disciples were increasing in number, the Hellenists murmured against the Hebrews because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. And the twelve summoned the body of the disciples and said, "it is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brethren, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word." And what they said pleased the whole multitude, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochoros, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaos, a proselyte of Antioch. These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands upon them. And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith. Προκείμενον. Second Mode. ΨΑΛΜΟΙ 117.14,18. VOTIVE CANDLE SAFETY Votive Candle Safety We have noticed that increasingly the faithful have been lighting candles and placing them in front of the Iconostasis (icon screen). We have also noticed that more and more of the faithful are having their votive candles brought into the Holy Altar. Because of the number of votive candles, twice we have had wax spills on the chairs in the Altar. Furthermore, we often find that candles have been left burning in the Altar and in front of the Iconostasis and this is a fire hazard. The decision of the Parish Council, along with Father Chris, is that votive candles are to remain in the Narthex of the church where they remain in safety glass in case the plastic insert catches fire and not brought into the Altar or placed in front of the Iconostasis. We thank you for your cooperation. 6 23

GOSPEL READING Sunday of the Myrrh-Bearing Women The Reading is from Mark 15:43-47; 16:1-8 At that time, Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. And Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph. And he bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud, and laid him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid. And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?" And looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back; for it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, he is not here; see the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you." And they went out and fled from the tomb; for trembling and astonishment had come upon them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. 22 7

If you wish to add or remove a name from the list, please call the Church Office. CEMETERY VISITS Due to the number of sacraments, 40 day blessings and memorials on Sundays it is difficult to make cemetery visits on Sundays after liturgy. If you would like a Trisagion at the graveside during the week you are kindly asked to make an appointment by calling the church office. HOSPITAL VISITS Due to HIPAA privacy rules, hospitals no longer provide a list of Orthodox patients to us. Therefore, if you or a loved one are, or will be, in the hospital, please contact the church office for a pastoral visit. Also, please notify the office if a friend or family member is in a rehab center, nursing home, assisted living facility or under hospice care. WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS Everyone is welcome in the Orthodox Church and may receive the blessed bread (antidoron) at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. Sadly, the divisions in the church prompt us all to work towards reunited Christianity. The culmination of this reunion will be the ability of all Christians to receive the Eucharist together. Until that blessed day arrives, only Orthodox Christians who are in good sacramental order are permitted to receive Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church. If you have any questions or concerns please speak with Father Chris. ALTAR DONATIONS LITURGY LIGHTS In loving memory of Michael C. Lignos. 20 9

We would like to invite everyone to a series of workshops called The Liturgy through Music. We plan to look at the role that music plays in the services of our church. Music plays a major role in worship during our services. When we understand how byzantine music has evolved through the centuries we feel more active participants in our liturgy. Also, we plan to look at the translation and also challenges in performing byzantine chant in English in our churches in the United States. The workshops will take place in our choir loft during the next three Tuesday nights (May 2, May 9, May 16) 7-8 PM. We hope you will join us. Tony Vatousios Music Director 508-843-2190 18 11

FUNDRAISER Tomorrow Night DO YOU HAVE AN APARTMENT FOR RENT? 14 Do you have an apartment to rent?! My name is Leandra Manos and I reside in Manchester, CT (originally from Worcester, MA). I recently accepted a position as Aquatic Director of Saint John's Preparatory in Danvers, MA, but as it's 2 hours from my home, I'm looking for a place for me and my 2 dogs and 1 cat to live during the week within 20 or so minutes of the school in commuter traffic, and I plan to go back home to CT on the weekends to do the things I need to do as a homeowner (cut the grass, fix things, etc., etc.). If you do have a small apartment to rent please contact me at livewell264@aol.com 15
