Sunday, March 9, 2014 Hymns Following the Gospel (Small Entrance) Apolytikion Apoluti/kion Having learned the joyful proclamation of the Resurrection from the Angel, and having cast off the ancestral condemnation, the women disciples of the Lord spake to the Apostles exultantly: Death is despoiled and Christ God is risen, granting great mercy to the world. Apolytikion Apoluti/kion We worship Your immaculate icon, O Good One, asking the forgiveness of our failings, O Christ our God; for of Your own will You were well-pleased to ascend the Cross in the flesh, that You might deliver from slavery to the enemy those whom You had fashioned. Wherefore, we cry to You thankfully: You did fill all things with joy, O our Saviour, when You came to save the world. Apolytikion Be entreated, O Lord, by the sufferings endured for You by the Saints, and we pray You, heal all our pain. As it received your mighty word, By which you divinely made manifest And clarified the nature of existing things You set in order the customs of men, You who are royal priesthood! Holy Father, intercede with Christ our God To grant us His great mercy. In your irresistible might, keep me safe from all trials, that I may call out to you: "Hail, unwedded bride!" Prokeimenon. Mode 4. Daniel 3.26,27 Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our fathers. Verse: For you are just in all you have done. St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 12:1-10 BRETHREN, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you forgotten the exhortation which addresses you as sons? "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor lose courage when you are punished by him. For the Lord disciplines him whom he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives." It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers to discipline us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father.
Sunday of Orthodoxy The Gospel of John 1:43-51 At that time, Jesus decided to go to Galilee. And he found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael, and he said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these." And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man." KIDS TO CAMP The Parish Assembly and the Parish Council have established a program that any child of a Parishioner in Good Standing, is invited to attend ONE WEEK (their choice of week) at the Metropolitan Boston Camp in Contoocook, New Hampshire, the summer following their completion of 6 th grade in our Church School or 6 th grade in our Greek School FREE OF CHARGE. With generous donations from various organizations, ministries, individuals and bequests we are able to fund this worthwhile endeavor. It is our belief that we must support the amazing camping ministry of our Metropolis and in addition, recommit and reconnect our children to the faith and fellowship of Orthodoxy. We invite others that share our commitment to donate to the Kids to Camp Fund to maintain this valuable undertaking. If your child is interested in participating please fill out the following form and submit it to the church office by April 1, 2014, so we may budget appropriately. In addition, we will continue to help those needing financial assistance to send their children to camp. Please see Fr Chris for this confidential support. For the next few Sundays we hope to have a choir member in the front of the church leading you in responses like "Amen" and "Lord Have Mercy". What is important is not how you are singing but what you are singing. Our goal is for your voice to reach the dome of the church and the Pantocrator (the creator). Parents be the example to your children and likewise children be the example to your parents." 8 13

HOSPITAL VISITS Salem Hospital is making a change in order to be in compliance with new privacy laws. This change will mean that we will no longer receive the list of Orthodox patients in the hospital. So, if you or a loved one will be in the hospital please call the church office so that we can pay you a pastoral visit. This change will also affect Beverly Hospital as well. Also, families of people in nursing home please call the church office so that their names will be included on the list of residents. WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS! Everyone is welcome in the Orthodox Church and may receive the blessed bread (antidoron) at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. Sadly, the divisions in the church prompt us all to work towards reunited Christianity. The culmination of this reunion will be the ability of all Christians to receive the Eucharist together. Until that blessed day arrives, only Orthodox Christians who are in good sacramental order are permitted to receive Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church. If you have any questions or concerns please speak with Father Chris. Palm Sunday schedule The First Divine Liturgy on PALM SUNDAY will be held, as is our custom, in the Auditorium of the Educational Center at 9:00 a.m. Orthros will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Church, followed by the Second Divine Liturgy at 10:30 a.m. The faithful of our parish who cannot attend regular morning services to receive Holy Communion during Holy Week because of their work schedules, may receive at two early Divine Liturgies. These liturgies are on Holy Thursday at 6:00 a.m. and on Holy Saturday at 7:00 a.m. In addition to these two Divine Liturgies, we will also celebrate three Presanctified Liturgies, on Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday, and Holy Wednesday, with 3 additional opportunities for the faithful to receive Holy Communion. 9
