On Sunday, November 9, 2014 the St. Val s Men s Club will be sponsoring a memorial service in the church at the end of the Divine Liturgy in memory of all of their departed members. After the Divine Liturgy all members of the community are invited to go outside and join the Honor Guard honoring the memories of the veterans that have served our country and have entered into eternal rest. Fr. Timothy s Bible Study Fr. Timothy's Bible Study meets on Thursdays in the Board Room as follows: Morning Bible Study is on Thursday 10:00am to 11:30am in the Board Room. Evening Bible Study is on Thursday 7pm to 8:30pm in the Board Please Note: Fr. Chris will not hold a Bible Class on October 14, October 21 and November 11. The final class will be on December 9. 5 CHURCH SCHOOL COAT DRIVE The Church School will be collecting coats for both adults and children. Coats may be new or used, but clean and in good condition. Boxes will be set up in the Educational Center Foyer from Oct. 12 th to Nov. 2 nd. Coats can also be brought to any Church School classroom. Please help the students provide help and hope this winter to people in need in our communities. If you wish to add or remove a name from the list, please call the Church Office. CEMETERY VISITS: Due to the number of sacraments, 40 day blessings and memorials on Sundays it is difficult to make cemetery visits on Sundays after liturgy. If you would like a Trisagion at the graveside during the week you are kindly asked to make an appointment by calling the church office. HOSPITAL VISITS Due to HIPPA privacy rules, hospitals no longer provide a list of Orthodox patients to us. Therefore, if you or a loved one are, or will be, in the hospital, please contact the church office for a pastoral visit. Also, please notify the office if a friend or family member is in a rehab center, nursing home, assisted living facility or under hospice care. WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS! Everyone is welcome in the Orthodox Church and may receive the blessed bread (antidoron) at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. Sadly, the divisions in the church prompt us all to work towards reunited Christianity. The culmination of this reunion will be the ability of all Christians to receive the Eucharist together. Until that blessed day arrives, only Orthodox Christians who are in good sacramental order are permitted to receive Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church. Eleni Kalioras, the new Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries for the Metropolis of Boston will be visiting our parish today. Eleni was born and raised in Concord, New Hampshire. She recently completed the undergraduate Elementary Education program at Hellenic College. During the past four years, Eleni has been very active in our Metropolis ministries including the Metropolis of Boston Camp, youth and young adult retreats, "Orthodoxy On Tap" discussions, as well as a wide variety of administrative and educational programs. Eleni has served as the Sunday School Director, Youth Coordinator, and Vacation Church School Director of the St. Catherine Church of Braintree. Eleni will be working in close cooperation with Michael Sintros and our entire MBC Youth Ministry Staff to continue to offer innovative and dynamic ministry opportunities for the young people across New England. I ask you to join me in welcoming Eleni to our parish, where she will be speaking to our youth. 7 A VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE The Metropolis of Boston, together with all Philoptochos chapters and clergy, are adopting a new and ongoing project to provide support to homeless veterans in the New England area. The project, OPERATION HOUSEWARM- ING, involves providing housewarming items to those homeless veterans who are transitioning to independent living. The Philoptochos needs everyone s help. Please purchase one or more new items from the following veteran s wish list and bring it to St. Vasilios Church where there will be 2 containers, one located downstairs in front of the office and the other in the foyer of the Educational Center. Please be generous in providing needed assistance to the veterans so that we may show our grateful appreciation for their service. If you have any questions, please call Paula at or Maria at Sincerely, The Philoptochos Athena TEACHING LITURGY On Sunday, Oct. 12 th, students along with their parents are asked to attend Liturgy. As Fr. Chris celebrates the Divine Liturgy, the altar will face the congregation giving all an opportunity to see what is taking place. At this time there will be several pauses during which explanations will be given, thus teaching this important service. After the teaching Liturgy everyone is invited outside for the blessing of the Dome and Cross. After the Teaching Liturgy, the students and any interested parishioners are invited to join grades 4 through 12 at a Question & Answer session with Fr. Chris in the Parlor Room. If you have not already done so please return the COINS FOR CHIRST jars to benefit the Monastery of Metropolis of Boston. 14 7

8 Cooking for the Haven from Hunger I am reminding the St Vasilios community of their generous commitment to helping others who are less fortunate by cooking for the Haven from Hunger, a shelter that feeds the hungry. We will be preparing a church cooked meal on the 4th Wednesday of each month for pick up the next morning by the Haven. The following is the schedule of the months chosen by various organizations, individuals and ministries of the church: January Brandon + Louisa Simpson February PTA March Church school April St. Makrina May Philoptohos June PTA July Men`s Club August Men`s Club September Daughters of Penelope October Parish Council November Thanksgiving (City of Peabody prepares the meal) December Church School (unless Christmas falls on 4th Thursday, then City prepares the meal) I want to personally thank all the groups for their time and effort for this meaningful cause. If any parishioner would like to assist in cooking on any particular month, please contact the head of the group above to find out what time they will be preparing the meal. Also the month of April has not been filled. Please let us know if you would like to prepare on that date, so that we do not leave the Haven without a meal that night. A healthy spiritual life should be the norm not just of Council Members, but of all Orthodox Christians. By fully realizing the importance of the service offered by members of the Parish Council, official representatives of St. Vasilios, a person assumes a position that demands love, fidelity and dedication to the Holy Orthodox Church and will make every effort to exemplify its sacred character and spirit. If you share these priorities, it is the church s hope and prayer that you would submit your name as a candidate for the Parish Council no later than Friday, November 7, Elections will be held on Sunday December 14, If you are willing to be a candidate for election to the Parish Council, you must attend a Parish Council Candidate Seminar, to be held at St Vasilios at a time convenient to the candidates. This year we are also asking for a High School Student to join the Council as a non-voting Youth Representative to assist in addressing the needs of the youth of St Vasilios. They will not be required to attend the Candidate Seminar, but are encouraged to do so. The Youth Rep will be asked to attend monthly Parish Council Meetings and Committee meetings of his or her choosing. This is a great opportunity to participate in the governance of your church and also earn community service. Please complete the form below and check Youth.
