SPYRIDON HELLENIC ORTHODOX CHURCH 12307 S. RIDGELAND AVE. PALOS HEIGHTS, IL 60463 WWW. SAINT- SPYRIDON.ORG CATECHISM 101 Many prophecies of the Old Testament concerning Christ are verbal descriptions of Him and His life. The prophet Isaiah, for example, spoke of His birth by a virgin, and the prophet Micah spoke of Bethlehem as the birthplace of the Messiah. However, some of the prophecies about Christ are actual events, narrative prophecies where types of Christ prophetically live out the life of the Prototype Who was to come. One such example is what we studied in our Bible Study this month: the sacrifice of Isaac by Abraham. This event takes place in the 21 st chapter of Genesis. Abraham is asked by God to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac who was the fulfillment of God s promise. For twenty-five years God kept promising to Abraham that he would have a son whose descendants would be as numerous as the stars. The son that would fulfill God s promise is now asked to be sacrificed. Abraham does not hesitate to fulfill the Lord s commandment. Early the next morning, without telling his wife Sarah for fear she might prevent him from carrying out his obedience to God, Abraham takes Isaac, two servants, and the wood carried by a donkey. He sets off toward Jerusalem where the sacrifice was set to take place. Wishing all of you a blessed Holy Week and a Glorious Pascha!

Athletics And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Throughout the narrative we see the parallels between Isaac and Jesus, to the point that the sacrifice of Isaac is nothing less than the prophecy of Christ s own crucifixion. Isaac is Abraham s only son, his beloved son. The destination is the city of Jerusalem in which Christ would be crucified. Isaac is accompanied by two servants, just as Christ was accompanied by the two thieves who would be crucified with him. Isaac is assisted in his journey by a donkey, just as Jesus would enter Jerusalem on the way to His passion. Before reaching his destination, Abraham dismissed the servants and the donkey, and loads Isaac with the wood for the sacrifice just as Jesus carried his own cross to Golgotha. When Isaac asked his father about the whereabouts of the animal they were going to sacrifice he did not just mention any animal but specifically a lamb, prophetically signifying the Lamb of God who was the Messiah. The place of the sacrifice was the future site of the temple of Solomon where the last Paschal offering was sacrificed just as Jesus was offered on the cross for the life of the world. When Abraham proceeded to bind Isaac s feet and hands in the manner of sacrificing him, Isaac did not say a word, just as Jesus opened not His mouth at His own suffering. At the very last moment before Abraham put a knife to Isaac s throat, God interrupted him. A ram whose horns were caught at a thicket would be offered instead of Isaac. A ram is a lamb who has reached adulthood just as Christ would be a mature adult. The ram was caught in a thicket, both in its trunk which is vertical and the branches which are horizontal, much like when Christ was nailed unto the vertical and horizontal beams of the cross. Finally, the ram was offered in the place of Isaac. Jesus would be sacrificed in the place of man who deserved to be crucified for his own sins. Jesus becomes our substitute on the cross. The fact that He was innocent and sinless, makes Him the only human being who did not deserve the cross. The ram became a substitute and thus saved Isaac. Jesus becomes our substitute and by His sacrifice He saves all of us. He takes our place. He redeems us and makes our death in Adam become life in Him. As we prepare for the events of Holy Week and Pascha, the sacrifice of Isaac reveals to us that Christ s crucifixion was in God s plan before the beginning of creation. His sacrificial love for us, His desire to have His creatures love Him freely and unconditionally through faith is as old as God Himself. Abraham was tested so that God could show us the path to our destiny through a true father of faith. All of us will be tested on this path. By our own desire, by God s purpose, by Christ s redeeming work, may we all be granted to taste the Lord s glory during this Pascha and always. In His love, Fr. Tilemahos Alikakos 2 The Voice
