The greatest challenge of every person - religious or otherwise - is to break away from the easy, natural propensity to live according to external appearance: according to what we see and observe with physical eyes. This is no less a danger in the realm of religion: Many people believe not so much in God as in religion, strange as this may sound. They simply like being in church; they find it cozy and comfortable. Many of these people have been accustomed since their childhood to the holiness of church and rituals. Here everything is beautiful, deep, mysterious - quite different from what they find in the world s day-to-day insanity and evil. And without ever thinking about it, or pursuing it on a deeper level, these people hold on to this religiosity. But religiosity has almost no connection to real life. Religiosity provides good, clean experiences and makes it easier to live; but religion in this scheme is isolated and divorced from real life. (Fr Alexander Schmemann) In the gospel reading today, Christ speaks almost entirely in metaphorical language to push us beyond the visible world into the spiritual world, into the inner reality of life. The Samaritan woman - now known to us as St Photini - has serious difficulty in understanding Christ s message. He speaks of eternal water which, if we drink it, forever quenches our thirst. The Samaritan woman foolishly thinks He is talking about earthly water; at best, she thought of Christ as some magician, able to work a marvel by sorcery, thus removing her need to drink water for the remainder of her earthly life (St Nikolai Velimirovich). Rather than rebuking the Samaritan woman, St Nikolai tells us that we continually fall into the same trap. Our spiritual thirst is often covered up by our thirst for earthly comforts: the thirst for material security, for all the things we think we need to be happy, for a life free from difficulties and challenges. When we reach out to God in prayer, it s often with a desire for something - a reward in this life or the next - rather than a desire for God Himself. Christ begins with a basic human need - water - and then move us to the deeper, more important spiritual need: ὕδωρ ζῶν, which is translated living water. This kind of water bubbles up, gushes forth, and flows, carrying implications of refreshment and movement, as opposed to stagnant water sitting idly in a pool. This living water is the dynamism that naturally springs from having a real, personal relationship with God. A dynamic, personal relationship may not answer all our questions with absolute clarity, and it may not provide solutions to all our supposed problems ; it does, however, offer a love that bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things [and] never fails (1 Cor. 13:7-8). And how does this relationship with God begin? Only with uncovering authentic spiritual thirst, a thirst that makes the soul feel like a discontented traveler in a foreign land, and nothing in the world can fully feed and refresh it (St Nikolai). Then we learn to let go of control; we learn to yearn for God Himself, rather than yearning for things from Him.

Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." The woman said to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?" Jesus said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw." Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, 'I have no husband'; for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband; this you said truly." The woman said to him, "Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain; and you say that Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship." Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." The woman said to him, "I know that the Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ); when he comes, he will show us all things." Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am he." Just then his disciples came. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but none said, "What do you wish?" or, "Why are you talking with her?" So the woman left her water jar, and went away into the city and said to the people, "Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?" They went out of the city and were coming to him. Meanwhile the disciples besought him, saying "Rabbi, eat." But he said to them, "I have food to eat of which you do not know." So the disciples said to one another, "Has anyone brought him food?" Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish his work. Do you not say, 'There are yet four months, then comes the harvest'? I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see how the fields are already white for harvest. He who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, 'One sows and another reaps.' I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor; others have labored, and you have entered into their labor." Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman's testimony. "He told me all that I ever did." So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, "It is no longer because of your words that we believe, for we have heard ourselves, and we know that this is indeed Christ the Savior of the world."
(Απόσπασμα ομιλίας του Αγίου Γρηγορίου Παλαμά) Κυριακή της Σαμαρείτιδος Έρχεται ο Κύριος σε μια πόλη της Σαμάρειας που λέγεται Σιχάρ. (Σαμάρεια ονομάσθηκε η πόλη που έκτισε το 880 π.χ. ο βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ, Αμβρί, έπειτα το όρος Σομόρ που ήταν η ακρόπολή της και τέλος όλο το βόρειο βασίλειο του Ισραήλ, που καταλύθηκε από τους Ασσυρίους το 721 π.χ. και ο ηγεμόνας τους εγκατέστησε εκεί εθνικούς από πολλά μέρη). Εκεί ήταν η πηγή του Ιακώβ, το πηγάδι που εκείνος είχε ανοίξει. Κουρασμένος ο Κύριος από την οδοιπορία κάθισε μόνος του δίπλα από το πηγάδι και κάτω αφελώς, γιατί οι μαθητές του πήγαν να αγοράσουν τροφές. Έρχεται εκεί μια γυναίκα από τη Σαμάρεια να πάρει νερό και ο Κύριος διψώντας ως άνθρωπος, της ζήτησε νερό. Αυτή αντελήφθηκε από την εμφάνισή του ότι ήταν Ιουδαίος και θαύμασε πως ένας Ιουδαίος ζητά νερό από την εθνική Σαμαρείτιδα. Αν γνώριζες, της είπε, τη δωρεά του Θεού, ποιός είναι αυτός που σου ζητά να πιεί νερό, εσύ θα του ζητούσες και θα σου έδινε ζωντανό νερό. Ο Κύριος επιβεβαίωσε ότι αν γνώριζε θα γινόταν μέτοχος πραγματικά ζωντανού νερού, όπως έπραξε και απόλαυσε αργότερα όταν το έμαθε, ενώ το συνέδριο των Ιουδαίων που έμαθαν σαφώς, έπειτα εσταύρωσαν τον Κύριο της δόξης. Δωρεά του Θεού είναι, επειδή θεωρεί αγαπητούς όλους ακόμα και τους μισητούς από του Ιουδαίους εθνικούς και προσφέρει τον εαυτό του και καθιστά τους πιστούς σκεύη δεκτικά της Θεότητός του. Η Σαμαρείτιδα δεν κατάλαβε το μεγαλείο του ζωντανού νερού, απορεί που θα βρεί νερό χωρίς κουβά σε ένα βαθύ πηγάδι. Έπειτα επιχειρεί να τον συγκρίνει με τον Ιακώβ, που τον αποκαλεί πατέρα, εξυμνώντας το γένος από το τόπο και εξαίρει το νερό με τη σκέψη ότι δεν μπορεί να βρεθεί καλύτερο. Όταν όμως άκουσε ότι το «νερό που θα σου δώσω» θα γίνει πηγή που τρέχει προς αιώνια ζωή, άφησε λόγο ψυχής που ποθεί και οδηγείται προς τη πίστη και ζήτησε να το λάβει για να μη ξαναδιψήσει. Ο Κύριος θέλοντας να αποκαλύπτεται λίγο λίγο, της λέγει να φωνάξει τον άνδρα της, γνωρίζοντάς της πόσους άνδρες είχε και αυτόν που έχει τώρα δεν είναι δικός της. Εκείνη όμως δεν στενοχωρείται από τον έλεγχο, αλλά αμέσως καταλαβαίνει ότι ο Κύριος είναι προφήτης και του ζητά εξηγήσεις σε ψηλά ζητήματα. Βλέπετε πόση είναι η μακροθυμία και η φιλομάθεια αυτής της γυναίκας; Πόση συλλογή και γνώση είχε στη διάνοιά της, πόση γνώση της θεόπνευστης Γραφής; Και αμέσως τον ρωτά που πρέπει να λατρεύεται σωστά ο Θεός, εδώ σ' αυτό το τόπο ή στα Ιεροσόλυμα; Και τότε παίρνει τη απάντηση, ότι έρχεται η ώρα οπότε ούτε στο όρος αυτό ούτε στα Ιεροσόλυμα θα προσκυνήτε τον Πατέρα. Της γνωρίζει μάλιστα ότι η σωτηρία είναι από τους Ιουδαίους, δεν είπε θα είναι, στο μέλλον, γιατί ήταν αυτός ο ίδιος. Έρχεται ώρα και είναι τώρα που οι αληθινοί προσκυνητές θα προσκυνούν το Πατέρα κατα Πνεύμα και αλήθεια. Γιατί ο ύψιστος και προσκυνητός Πατέρας, είναι Πατέρας αυτοαληθείας, δηλαδή του μονογενούς Υιού και έχει Πνεύμα αληθείας, το Πνεύμα το άγιο και αυτοί που τον προσκυνούν, το πράττουν έτσι διότι ενεργούνται δι' αυτών. Ο Κύριος απομακρύνει κάθε σωματική έννοια τόπο και προσκύνηση, λέγοντας: «Πνεύμα ο Θεός και αυτοί που τον προσκυνούν πρέπει να τον προσκυνούν κατα Πνεύμα και αλήθεια». Ως πνεύμα που είναι ο Θεός είναι ασώματος, το δε ασώματο δεν ευρίσκεται σε τόπο ούτε περιγράφεται με τοπικά όρια. Ως ασώματος ο Θεός δεν είναι πουθενά, ως Θεός δε είναι παντού, ως συνέχων και περιέχων το πάν. Παντού είναι ο Θεός όχι μόνο εδώ στη γη αλλά και υπεράνω της γης, Πατήρ ασώματος και κατά τον χρόνο και σε τόπο αόριστος. Βέβαια και η ψυχή και ο άγγελος είναι ασώματα, δεν είναι όμως σε τόπο, αλλά δεν είναι και παντού, γιατί δεν συνέχουν το σύμπαν αλλά αυτά έχουν ανάγκη του συνέχοντος. Η Σαμαρείτιδα καθώς άκουσε από το Χριστό αυτά τα εξαίσια και θεοπρεπή λόγια, αναπτερωμένη, μνημονεύει τον προσδοκώμενο και ποθούμενο Μεσσία, τον λεγόμενο Χριστό που όταν έρθει θα μας τα διδάξει όλα. Βλέπετε πως ήταν ετοιμότατη για την πίστη; Από που θα γνώριζε τούτο, αν δεν είχε μελετήσει τα προφητικά βιβλία με πολλή σύνεση; Έτσι προλαβαίνει περί του Χριστού ότι θα διδάξει όλη την αλήθεια. Μόλις την είδε ο Κύριος τόσο θερμή της λέγει απροκάλυπτα: Εγώ είμαι ο Χριστός, που σου μιλώ. Εκείνη γίνεται αμέσως εκλεκτή ευαγγελίστρια και αφήνοντας τη υδρία και το σπίτι της τρέχει και παρασύρει όλους τους Σαμαρείτες πρός το Χριστό και αργότερα με τον υπόλοιπο φωτοειδή βίο της (ως Αγία Φωτεινή) σφραγίζει με το μαρτύριο την αγάπη της προς τον Κύριο.

GREEK SCHOOL Registration for the Archangel Michael Greek Language Institute has started and will continue for the entire month, until May 25th. We will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the hours of 5:15 p.m.-7:00 p.m. to accept Registration Forms. Registration will be handled on a first come first serve basis. We offer classes from Pre-K thru 6th on Tuesdays and Thursdays (1st session) from 4:00 p.m.-5:30 p.m. or (2nd session) 5:45 p.m. -7:15 p.m. 7th Grade meets only once a week on Thursdays from 5:45 p.m. -7:45p.m. The 8th Grade (Regents Class) meets only once a week on Tuesdays beginning in October from 5:45 p.m. -7:15 p.m. All new families and/or returning students who have completed the year at another location must also bring a copy of their last report card from the school they last attended. The Membership Committee of the Archangel Michael Church is excited to welcome Our newest Organization... We are introducing a new group for Moms and Expectant Moms to build friendships, share resources, and provide support for the life changes that come from starting a family. Our First Meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 17 th, 10:30 a.m. 12:00 p.m. ~ Fellowship Hall We anticipate that the Moms Group will meet once a month with the intention of helping you embrace your role with more confidence and to make this transition smoother, easier and more enjoyable. Moreover, it s a great way for new families to get to know the Archangel Michael Church community and all that we offer!! We envision the group engaging in parenting discussions, provide a forum for sharing experiences, building relationships, exploring our faith and offering valuable resources. Homemade healthy snacks and refreshments will be served.
