GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 435 KEATING DRIVE WINSTON-SALEM, NC 27104 ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED TIME SENSITIVE MATERIAL PLEASE EXPEDITE SEPTEMBER 2017 Non-Profit Organiz. U.S. Postage Winston-Salem, NC Permit # 168 September 1 Church New Year WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME you began something new? At the beginning of college, perhaps, or a new job? When you got married or had a child or moved to a new town? Maybe one of the most significant new beginnings you recall now was your conversion to the Orthodox Faith, or joining a new parish. Or it could be the most recent time you started something new was today. Maybe you started a book you d never read before, or tried a new recipe, or met a new coworker. Newness is everywhere in God s world, if we look for it echoes and foreshadowings of the new life in Christ that we are promised in baptism. Each year at the beginning of September we have another chance to experience this newness on the first day of the liturgical year. At the same time as many members of the Church or their children are preparing to begin a new level in their education, the Church welcomes all of us to a course of studies. This is why we are called disciples. A disciple is a learner, a student. But not one who reads through the Bible in a higgledy-piggledy manner one who, rather, follows a discipline. We have such a discipline in the Church s liturgical cycle, a complete and orderly celebration of the history of God s dealings with His people. In fact, unlike an elementary school, high school, or university,, we are studying one subject only: God. And there is no graduation until the end of this life. Learning is not a preparation for life, it is life. For in our school the Church in all her aspects, whether liturgical services, Sunday school or Bible study, service to the needy, or fellowship with other members we not only learn about God, we learn to know Him and to follow Him. What preparations do we make as we embark on this new year in the Church? Have you set aside an icon corner? Do you have a saint s icon for each member of the family? Do you have the Orthodox Study Bible and Daily Readings listed on your religious calendar available? Do you have a list of people to pray for in your icon corner? Have you selected a book to read; one that would feed your Daily spiritual guidance? Let s start this New Year the right way! (Excerpts from Seasons of Grace Reflections on the Orthodox Church Year by Donna Farley)

PLEASE HELP US REACH OUR GOAL

Our children s programs have been blessed and are growing. We are also a very active parish with several other activities occurring at our facilities. In the best interest of the safety of our children we will be implementing a new drop off and pick up procedure for our children s programs. We are planning to start this procedure this fall for all programs (Hellenic Dance, Greek School and Annunciation Academy.) We feel this is a critical issue to address as we have had some close calls this past year but thank God no one has been injured. 1.The front parking lot can only be used for those who are dropping off older children who can walk into the church by themselves. The drop- off area in front of the steps is to be used and children should exit the vehicle from the passenger side of the vehicle onto the sidewalk. They should not exit from the driver s side and walk between vehicles. 2. Any parent who is dropping a child off and escorting them into the building should park in the rear parking lot in a marked space and walk their child to their activity. 3. At dismissal time all parents should park in the rear parking lot, in a marked space, come into the building and pick up their child. 4. Only those with a valid handicapped placard or tag should utilize the handicapped spaces. All parents or adults picking up will park in the rear parking lot, in a marked space, enter the building and escort their child/children out. We understand that this may cause some inconvenience however, we cannot imagine how a tragedy could affect our community and the safety of our children is paramount. We know that this change may take time to get used but I know everyone wants to work together to make our programs better and safer for our children. Welcome Back Greek School Families, I hope you all had an exciting and restful Summer. It is hard to believe that it is time to start the 2017-18 School Year. We are very excited about the upcoming year. We have made some positive additions to our growing program, for this reason it is crucial that you attend the Open House on Wednesday September 6th from 5pm-7pm for Parents and Students. Regular classes will resume on Wednesday September 13th. We are looking forward to another successful year. -In Christ Heather Vlachos Calling All Ladies of Our Parish Community!!!! If you could spend only 1 hour a week to develop rewarding friendships while helping those in need, would you volunteer your time and talents? If you could make an impact or change someone s life, would you volunteer your time and skills? Do you want to grow and learn new skills? If you answered yes to any one of those questions and you are at least 18 years old, you are invited to attend the Ladies of Philoptochos General Meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 13 th. The Greek Orthodox Ladies of Philoptochos Society is one of the largest women s philanthropic faith based organizations in the United States. Our participation is crucial in providing assistance to those in need, and by helping others, we provide fellowship and the opportunity for us to develop rewarding friendships with fellow Orthodox women. I pray this invitation finds you well, and hope to see you at the General Meeting on the 13th! Your Sister in Christ, Kiki Gonzales, President Prayer for Children For with God, all things are possible. LUKE 1:37 Save, Almighty God, the children, the adolescents, and the youth from traps and pitfalls. Keep the eyes of their souls always open and watchful. Protect them from destructive friendships Put a trench around their purity and innocence And wherever some crack has occurred, wherever one or more falls misfortunately happened, implant wings once again on the youthful soul, so that it can straighten up and be freed by Your grace. God, I beseech You not only to keep watch over the purity and integrity of them at their tender age, but also to make them strong and radiant Lord, may the lightning bolts of the pure and uncorrupt juvenile spirit cut through the dark chaos of our society. May Suns full of light that shine brilliantly in the children s completely pure eyes illuminate the chaos. +DEMETRIOS Archbishop of America
