This Service will remind us of the tragic events of 1974 that took place on that beautiful island Republic. We honor the memory of those who died defending their country, or fell victims to that brutal attack. This memorial service has been organized by the Greek Orthodox Holy Metropolis of San Francisco and the Honorary Consul General of Cyprus in Southern California, Mr. Andreas Kyprianides. Similar services will also be held at other local Greek Orthodox Churches. Please remember Cyprus and attend this important Memorial Service. May their memory be eternal 4

HYMNS OF THE DAY The Resurrection Apolytikion, Sixth Tone O Christ, the angelic powers appeared at Your tomb, the guards were as dead, and Mary stood by the grave, seeking Your sacred body. You destroyed Hades yet remained untouched by it. You encountered the Virgin and, through her, bestowed Life. Glory to You who has risen from the dead! First Tone O revered Mary Magdalene, you followed Christ who was born for us of a Virgin, keeping His laws and commandments. Wherefore, celebrating your most holy memory today, we praise you in faith and honor you in fervor. Troparion of Saint Sophia (Holy Wisdom) - Eighth Tone Blessed are You O Christ our God, Who as all wise the fishermen You showed forth; By sending your Holy Spirit down upon them and through them the universe You drew unto your net. O lover of mankind Glory to You. Kondakion Second Tone Champion of Christians not put to shame, advocate before the Maker always steadfast, do not spurn sinners voices raised in prayer. In your goodness respond to bring help to us who devoutly petition you. Hasten your intercession and urgently make entreaty; for you unfailingly defend, Theotokos, those who honor you. 6
EPISTLE READING Let Us Attend.. Verse: O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance. To you, O Lord, have I cried O my God. Wisdom.. The Reading is from Saint Paul s Letter to the Romans 15: 1-7 Let us be Attentive.. BRETHREN, we who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves; let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to edify him. For Christ did not please himself; but, as it is written, "The reproaches of those who reproached thee fell on me." For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of your Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. 8
GOSPEL READING The Reading is from Matthew 9:27-35 At that time, as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, "Have mercy on us, Son of David." When he entered the house, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord." Then he touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith be it done to you." And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly charged them, "See that no one knows it." But they went away and spread his fame through all that district. As they were going away, behold, a dumb demoniac was brought to him. And when the demon had been cast out, the dumb man spoke; and the crowds marveled, saying, "Never was anything like this seen in Israel." But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the prince of demons." And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people. 9

For those who are sick or suffering St. James advises us, If anyone among you is sick, let him call for the elders of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. (James 5:13-14) Ensuring that St Sophia s parishioners continue to be cared-for and prayed-for, please list names below of those in our midst that need prayer. Feel free to request the personal prayer of one of our priests after services, or to schedule this with one our priests during St Sophia Cathedral s office hours. As you request prayer, you may also wish to make an offering to Saint Sophia s Altar Fund.
