THE SOURCE February 2013 Issue # 2-13 HOLY TRINIT RINITY GREE REEK ORTHODO RTHODOX CATHEDRA THEDRAL CAMP HILL ILL,, PA Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, While I was on a retreat at St. Gregory Palamas Monastery in Northeast Ohio back in December I found a 1980 book on the shelf at the guesthouse by Bishop Gerasimos (of Abydou) of blessed memory, titled Orthodoxy: Faith and Life, Christ in the Gospels. One of my previous articles was based on notes from a conversation I had with him. Perhaps someday this holy bishop and former monk of Mt. Athos will be formally recognized as a saint of the church. Meanwhile, I want to share some of his writing pertaining to Epiphany/Theophany or the Baptism of Christ as well as his remarks on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord at the Temple (Feb. 2) which is the big feast this month. What follows is from Bishop Gerasimos: John assured the people: I am not the Christ I came baptizing with water and Christ, the lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! (Jn 1.19-34). He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. (Mk 1.7-8) John was truly the forerunner of the Messiah, and the great spiritual movement which he engendered with his preaching of repentance marked the hour for Christ to appear in Israel and to begin His work of salvation (cf. Mk 9.11-13) The Baptism Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John to be baptized by him. (Mt. 3.13) Enlightened by the Holy Spirit, John recognized in the person of Jesus the anticipated Messiah and hesitated to baptize Him How can the servant put his hand on the Master? as the Church hymn expresses it. But Jesus insisted that this is proper for those whose mission it is to fulfill all of the commandments of God. And as we have seen, even the baptism by John was the commandment and the will of God. John finally consented and baptized Jesus. Jesus was baptized out of love toward the people, as a representative of all mankind. Together with him all mankind was mystically baptized and saved. However, the perfect act of salvation was to take place on the Cross. The Theophany And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him; and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. (Mt. 3.16-17) (continued next page)

THE SOURCE FEBRUARY 2013 Page 2 As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, a theophany occurred; the presence of God was manifested in a visible form. Something like an opening occurred in the sky and the Holy Spirit in a visible manner, like a dove, descended and rested on Jesus. At the same time the voice of the Father above was heard witnessing that He who was baptized was the Beloved Son of God. In Christ God was pleased to save the world, to transfigure it and to restore in man the image of God which had been lost since the time of the fall. The revelation of God here became more clear and direct. The Son was baptized below. The Spirit descended from above and the heavenly Father bore witness to the Son. Jesus is the Beloved Son, the anticipated Messiah, and through the Holy Spirit He was dedicated to the work of Salvation. The symbolic opening of the heavens is a sign of the new communion between heaven and earth, between God and man. The appearance of the Holy Spirit as a dove is the symbol of the peace between God and man, which begins with the person and work of Christ. Peace on earth, good will to men. The Circumcision and the Presentation of the Child in the Temple, Luke 2:21-39 Christ was born in a Jewish environment, and Luke with particular attention follows his life according to the spirit of the Mosaic Law. Thus, Christ received circumcision on the eighth day (Gen. 17) and was given the name Jesus as the archangel Gabriel predicted. On the fortieth day, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. This was the ancient practice of the Jews to dedicate the first-born children to God as an expression of gratitude to him for sparing their children from death in Egypt (Ex. 12-13; Lev. 12). Many people were probably in the Temple on that day when Jesus was presented. But the Spirit of God again separated two witnesses of the event---simeon and Anna. Both were righteous an devout, awaiting for the consolation of Israel. They were awaiting the coming of the Messiah---the Savior. The Holy Spirit had revealed to Simeon that he would live to see the Messiah. And when he saw the child Jesus, he recognized him as the expected Messiah. Simeon took Jesus in his arms and glorified God saying: Lord now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation which thou has prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to thy people Israel. (Lk 2:29-32) Simeon, however, predicted that Christ, the light to the Gentiles and the glory of Israel, was destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel. Many were to rise and many were to fall according to the position they would take toward the person of Christ. Even His Mother would experience much pain, which she did especially at the crucifixion of her Son. The Ny Apolyis of Simeon is repeated by our Church at the end of every Vesper Service, and by the priest to himself at the end of every liturgy to reassure us that in going to church and in worship we have seen with the eyes of our soul, the Savior Lord; we have talked with him an now we leave filled with peace and spiritual joy. We can consider our church attendance a failure if we do not experience this emotion. Bishop Gerasimos left us only a few books, but I find them very valuable. I may share more of this one or others as time goes on. Wishing you a blessed new year, Fr. Mark

ELIZABETH S WOMAN S STUDY GROUP The St. Elizabeth s Woman s Study Group will resume our meetings on January 23 rd. Our book will be The Young Man, The Gurus and Elder Paisios. This powerful memoir tells the story of a Greek youth who, out of a desire to know the truth empirically, began to experiment in yoga, hypnotism, and various occult techniques. Eventually drawn back to the Faith of his forefathers Orthodox Christianity he visited the ancient monastic republic of Mount Athos in his native Greece, where he was brought to a knowledge of the Truth of Jesus Christ by the saintly Elder Paisios (1924 1994). Nevertheless, believing he had only found part of the truth on the Holy Mountain, he chose to give the same opportunity to Hindu yogis that he had given to Elder Paisios and other Orthodox monks. Thus, at the age of twenty-five, he embarked on a trip to India, where he undertook his search in the ashrams of three famous gurus, one of whom was worshipped as a god. His experiences in India, along with his subsequent encounters with Elder Paisios on Mount Athos, are recounted in the present book in vivid detail. This book is available through our Holy Trinity Bookstore or at www.amazon.com. Our group meets the 2 nd and 4 th Wednesdays of each month in the Church Library from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. Light refreshments are served. All ladies of our community are welcome. For more information please contact Ann Ariano at 564-6955 or ariano@paonline.com. CHURCH LENDING LIBRARY The church library contains information about Orthodoxy and Greece for you and your children. If you would like to borrow a book, sign the blue notebook, fill in name, date and name of book and when you return it, be sure to list the date you are returning it by your original sign in. BOOKSTORE The Bookstore continues to be open Sunday morning after Divine Liturgy as well as shopping links to Orthodox Marketplace and St. Isaac Skete on the Holy Trinity website. Below is a summary of another interesting book available to you. The Rest of the Bible: A Guide to the Old Testament of the Early Church presents a guide to portions of Scripture that, in the words of St. Athanasius, were appointed by the Fathers to be read by those who newly join us, and who wish for instruction in the word of godliness. He called these sections the Readables (Anagignoskomena) but in the West they are known as the Apocrypha or Deuterocanonicals and are either omitted completely or placed in a separate section of their Bibles. These sections are an integral part the Old Testament in the Orthodox Study Bible because this is a translation of the Septuagint, the Greek Old Testament. The Readables are essential to us as

THE SOURCE FEBRUARY 2013 Page 9 Christians. The author, Theron Mathis, participated as a translator of the Old Testament for the Orthodox Study Bible. He shows how the lessons and prayers contained in the Readables are referred to, and quoted in, the New Testament (particularly in St. Paul s letters), as well as by Church Fathers from the earliest centuries on. He illustrates how the stories are woven through our hymnography (e.g., the Hymn of the Three Holy Youths sung on Holy Saturday). It is only with the Reformation that these get lost from Western Christian consciousness. CHRISTMAS ANGELS PROGRAM A heart-felt thanks goes out to all of our Church members who sponsored 100 angels with gifts, gift cards and monetary donations for the 2012 Angel Project. You played a very important role in making this year s Angel project a huge success! The many items you donated were greatly appreciated by the receiving families. It was unbelievable to see that not only the angels received items, but also many of the parents as well. When parents picked up the gifts for their children and saw that there were a few items for them, it left many speechless. Through your generosity over 395 individual children received help. Thank you for making a difference during the Christmas holiday. May God Bless all the family members of our Church and those we helped during the New Year. THE SOURCE FEBRUARY 2013 Page 17 SATURDAY OF SOULS March 9, March 16, and March 23 THE SATURDAY OF SOULS The Orthodox Church has designated certain days of the year for special prayer services for the dead: The Saturday before Meat Fare Week and Cheese Fare Week and the Saturday before the first Sunday in Lent, March 9, 16, and 23. The Saturday prior to Pentecost, June 22, is also a Saturday of Souls. On these days, the Church remembers all the saints and our deceased loved ones. Our Church prays for all the dead to express their faith that all who have fallen asleep in the Lord live in the Lord. Whether on earth or in heaven, the Church is a single family, one body in Christ. Death changes the location, but it cannot sever the bond of love. On Memorial Saturdays, the liturgical hymns pray universally for all of the departed. "With the saints, give rest Oh Lord to the souls of your servants, where there is no pain or suffering, but life everlasting." May their memory be eternal! Prepare a tray of koliva and/or complete and cut out the section below and return it to the church office (List first names only) In Memory of Υπέρ αναπαύσεως των δούλων του Θεού)

THE SOURCE FEBRUARY 2013 Page 22 HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 1000 Yverdon Drive Camp Hill, PA 17011 NON PROFIT ORG. U.S. POSTAGE PAID Harrisburg, PA Permit No. 112 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ADVERTISING IN THE SOURCE In an effort to contain printing costs for monthly newsletters, many churches have turned to paid advertisements in their publications. Parish Council has agreed to adopt this funding source for our monthly publication. Doing this would help lessen and possibly erase the expense of publishing the Source. We now have availability for two pages of paid ads in our monthly Source. The ad price will represent a year of advertising or 11 issues as we combine the June and July Source into one issue. Ads are sold by the block. There will be room for 24 ads or blocks per page. You may purchase more than one block for increased space and presentation. The cost of one ad block is $125 per year, and subsequent blocks would be an additional $100 per block. For example, a business card ad would equal two blocks and would cost $225. Camera ready ads are appreciated but not required. Please help us promote this program. If you own or work for a business that may be interested in advertising in our Source which is sent out to over 600 families, please contact Mary in the church office. If you know of a business that may be a potential advertiser, please pass on a contact and phone number. Examples of businesses that may be interested in advertising could be Greek bands, importers, baptismal supplies/clothing stores, and jewelers specializing in crosses. Other possibilities could be lawyers, accountants, real estate agents, etc. The only ads we cannot accept are ones pertaining to credit cards, travel, or insurance. Please contact the church office as soon as possible if interested in this program.
