A t t e n t i o n : P a r e n t s, G r a n d p a r e n t s, & G o d p a r e n t s You are encouraged to pick up a CHURCH QUIET BAG, available in the small room on the right side of the Narthex, for your youngest Holy Trinity parishioners. The bags include religious books and quiet activities that can help your children learn about the Orthodox faith, with your guidance, during Divine Liturgy. You are also encouraged to work with the young ones during the Liturgy by having them stand up for the processions, Epistle and Gospel readings, the Nicene Creed, and the Lord's Prayer, as well as kneel at the appropriate time. Engage them in looking at the icons and quietly remind them of what they see in Church. Please RETURN THE BAGS in their original condition to the room in the Narthex prior to Sunday Church School so others can enjoy them the following Sunday. The CHURCH QUIET BAGS were lovingly donated by the Moustoukas and Peterson families and sponsored by the ECYM Committee. YOUTH HYMNOLOGY PROGRAM Parents, please mark two important Saturdays on your calendars. The Sunday Church School students have been practicing special hymns to chant in church during April and May, and their presence is needed on the following dates: April 23 9:00 am Saturday of Lazarus Service Rehearsal immediately after Divine Liturgy, followed by Communion Breakfast April 30 9:00 am SHARP! Students will chant Hymn of the Three Youths, and teens will offer Bible readings. Students in 4th Grade and older are invited to sing with the adult choir on Sundays and Friday evenings, when mentors will assist them. They must arrive by 10:00 am on Sundays and by 7:00 pm on Fridays. There has been a positive response to this initiative. ALL CHILDREN OF THE COMMUNITY ARE WELCOME TO PARTICIPATE in any Sunday Church School and Hymnology activities. For more information, please contact Viki Moustoukas, vmoustouka@aol.com. Thanks to everyone for the tremendous support of this youth ministry. Sunday, April 17 Continued Youth Hymnology and Sunday Church School after Holy Communion 12:00 pm ~ Daughters Meeting in Coffee Room 12:00 pm ~ Kids' Café in Upstairs Common Area 12:00 pm ~ Community Wide Family Day Luncheon-Celebration in Gymnasium 1:00 pm ~ Hellenic Dancers Practice in Gymnasium 2:00 pm ~ BAER BAPTISM Message from Father George OUR CONNECTION TO OUR PATRON SAINTS As many of you know, I traveled to upstate New York this week for the funeral of my Uncle Russell. May his memory be eternal. His Christian saint s name is Triantafyllos (August 8). When a baby is baptized in Orthodox Christian families, the child is given the name of a Christian saint. Sometimes, we are known by our baptismal name. For example, my patron saint is Saint George the Great Martyr, and, obviously, I am known in the world as George as well. In the case of my uncle, Triantafyllos was a family name and a saint s name, but he was known in the world as Russell. Let s see who Saint Triantafyllos was. In the mid-seventeenth century a boy named Triantafyllos (pronounced tree-an-ta-fee-los and translated rose ) was born in Zagora near the city of Volos, Greece. During these times, the Greeks suffered greatly under the Tourkokratia. At the age of fifteen, working as a fisherman in Constantinople, Triantafyllos was arrested. In confusion he questioned why he was being taken away for he had done nothing wrong. He was given no response and was dragged to the authorities. There, he was pressured to renounce Christ. He finally figured out that this was the only reason for his arrest. He remained firm and refused to leave his Lord Jesus Christ no matter what they did to him. He told them that they could torture him until he could no longer stand, even kill him, but that he would never renounce Jesus. On August 8 in the year 1680 Triantafyllos was killed in the Hippodrome in Constantinople. God rewarded his sacrifice and, as a message to those who remained, his holy relics exuded a beautiful fragrance - a sign of blessedness. As Greek Orthodox Christians, it is customary to take on the name of a Christian saint as our patron saint. A theologian of our Church, Phyllis Meshel Onest, shares the following which appears on our Archdiocese Website: Christians have long chosen the names of saints to proclaim their link with their spiritual family, the Church. The name may be of a saint commemorated on or near to the day of the child s birth, or for whom the family has a special devotion. Likewise, an adult received into the Orthodox Church chooses a saint s name to whom he/she has a strong attachment. In days past, this was often a costly witness for believers living in a non-christian society, as their very names (Nicholas or George, Elias or Barbara) labeled them as Christians. Each day of the year, the Church honors a number of Saints. The day the Church honors one s saint is one s Name Day, an occasion to honor the memory of the saint whose name we bear and to give thanks for his/her daily intercession on our behalf. Individuals whose names are not found (over)

Message Continued on the Calendar of Saints celebrate on All Saints Day, the Sunday after Pentecost. We are to pray and have a special devotion to our patron saint. His or her life should be read and studied so that we learn how our lives should be directed. Our patron saint becomes a true hero/heroine for us to emulate. The Church is one Body in Christ: one household of all the baptized living or dead with Christ as its head. Maintaining and celebrating our association with one of the saints of Christian history helps us to see the Church not as an impersonal institution but as it is meant to be: one family under the Lordship of Christ. GREEK FESTIVAL LOUKOUMADES BOOTH CHAIRPERSON NEEDED A chairperson is needed for the Greek Festival Loukoumades Booth, and everyone is asked to kindly consider volunteering for this position. Apolytikion Plagal Tone 4 With the rivers of your tears, you have made the barren desert fertile. Through sighs of sorrow from deep within you, your labors have borne fruit a hundred-fold. By your miracles you have become a light, shining upon the world. O John, our Holy Father, pray to Christ our God, to save our souls. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. O Loving One, glory to You. Kontakion Plagal Tone 4 To you, Theotokos, invincible Defender, having been delivered from peril, I, your city, dedicate the victory festival as a thank offering. In your irresistible might, keep me safe from all trials, that I may call out to you: "Rejoice, unwedded bride!"

THE EPISTLE St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 6:13-20 BRETHREN, when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore to himself, saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. THE GOSPEL Mark 9:17-31 At that time, a man came to Jesus kneeling and saying: "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And, he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And, they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And, Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And, he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And, Jesus said to him, "If you can! All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And, when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again." And, after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, "He is dead." But, Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And, when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" And, he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting." They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And, he would not have any one know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise."
