Hellenic Community of WA Inc 20 Parker Street, Northbridge WA 6003 Tel: 08 9328 5141 Fax: 08 9227 9652 Wishing all our members a Happy and Safe Easter! Καλό Πάσχα We are online You can now receive your Hellenic Herald straight to your INBOX! Simply send your name and email address to info@hcwaorg to join our database This will assist the community in reducing its costs with printing and postage and enable us to get community news to you faster Please be assured that your details will only be used for strict HCWA Inc business and not passed on to others Hellenic Herald M A R C H 2 0 1 2 President s Report Dear Members, The work has begun The scaffolding that is encompassing our entire Hellenic Centre, marks the commencement of the $250,00000 project to remove all asbestos from the hall (before it degrades and becomes dangerous), in particular the roof, and begins the upgrade of our Community s facility It s not cheap and we don t have the money, but we must move forward, raise the required funds and take the necessary steps to revitalise our Northbridge precinct At the same time, you will find accompanying this edition of the Herald, the opportunity to express your views on the future directions of the Community The SPARC (Strategic Planning) sub-committee has prepared a survey asking for your feedback, thoughts and community aspirations at this crossroad in the progress of the Greek Community, and I ask you all to be frank, candid, considered and above all, forthcoming! The Management Committee is committed to marching forward on evolving our Community and its facilities, so your input NOW is vital One aspect that will affect the viability of our Community is the parking availability This issue is about to impact with greater force that at any time previous Whilst we have been successful up until now with campaigns to halt the introduction of City of Perth s paid parking on Sundays, once the Northbridge Rail Project has been completed, the city sprawl will without question push into Parker and Francis Streets, making paid parking at all times a reality In casual discussions with the City of Perth I am constantly told, that the area surrounding our Cathedral contains SEVEN council car parks and thousands of street side parking bays The issue is not the availability of parking, it is the inconvenience of having to pay for it, especially when are accustomed to doing CONTACT OUR EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE ON: otherwise Whether it s an inconvenience or something more substantial, it remains one of the equally most important issues as we tackle considerations for the future On a sad note, we have farewelled over the last few months many of our dear members and to all their families we offer the condolences of the entire Community Special acknowledgement must be made of the passing of Past President, Prof Mark Liveris and Life Member Evelyn M Palassis, both of whom continued to be enormously supportive and work quietly but substantially within our Community throughout their lives and to their closing days The legacy of their commitment and endeavours, together with those who have gone before them is a continuing and thriving community They have given to the life of our Community and we endure because of all of them And in their memory we say Zwi Se Mas On a brighter note, we congratulate our Life Member Emanuel Petrelis and his family, on his recognition in the Australian Honours, being awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) acknowledging his ongoing commitment to his Community and work in education (St Andrews) And congratulations to the family of our late Life Member, Jack Kyros, who also received the Order of Australia Medal Their works and the due recognition esteem all of us in the eyes of the wider community and we join their families in standing proud in their achievements Speaking of Life Members, Nick Houlis, (now residing in Melbourne) wishes to thank all of you who sent him messages of support and love after the home accident that left him potentially quadriplegic After many operations and months in rehabilitation hospital, Nick returned home on Christmas week, to continue home rehabilitation Whilst he has a long road of recovery ahead, when I visited with him recently, he WWWHCWAORG Gary Mitchell Petros Agapitos Sheryl Gourdis Sofie Sipsas President Vice President Secretary Treasurer was keen to demonstrate that that incredible inner strength, and in good spirits he joked, that in spite of his wife Evelyn and family having received many condolence messages, he wants everyone to know, that he s as strong as an ox, getting stronger and not going anywhere yet! To Life Member Arthur Athans (OAM), an enormous thank you from a grateful Community for year after year of volunteering time and efforts at our Hellenic Community Benevolent Association After decades of managing and broadcasting on Hellenic Community Radio, then moving to become a dedicated volunteer within our Aged Care facility in Dianella, Arthur is now stepping down to enjoy quieter pursuits In wishing Arthur well, we know he ll never be too far from our Community Finally, the Hellenic Community s Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday, 22 April, after church, with a light lunch to be provided Should you have motions that you wish put to the membership, constitutional amendments considered, or nominations for Life Membership, please ensure your suggestions are received by the Management Committee prior to the commencement of April To be eligible to vote at the AGM a member must be fully paid up (financial) in 2011 and 2012 In looking forward to receiving your input on our Community s future directions, I remain Yours in Community Spirit, 0432 552 233 0412 584 071 sherylgourdis@gmailcom 0438 974 474 repwa@ozemailcomau petrosaga@optusnetcomau ssipsas@hotmailcom Gary Mitchell On Behalf of the Management Committee

Perth Parishes Unite to Celebrate Epiphany 2012 P A G E 9 On Sunday 8 January all of Perth s Greek Orthodox Parishes, along with the Monastery of St John of the Mountain united to celebrate the Epiphany - the Feast of Lights By 1215pm, a near-400 strong crowd of parishioners gathered at the beautiful and serene Matilda Bay Reserve, Crawley, to witness the Service of the Blessing of the Waters with the Holy Cross This year, however, the celebrations were marked by a heightened level of organisation and professionalism, setting it apart from other years At the conclusion of each of the liturgies of Perth s Parish Churches and Monastery, the Reverend Fathers, chanters and parishioners made their way to the foreshore of the Swan River With plenty of parking available at Matilda Bay Reserve, happy faces emerged, taking their place amongst the crowds and setting up chairs for the elderly to sit An atmosphere of anticipation and excitement continued to swell as the preparations for the special Service got underway Perth s Churches; St Nektarios, Sts Constantine and Helene, and The Annunciation of Our Lady (Evangelismos), as well as the Monastery of St John of the Mountain, were all represented by the following Reverend Fathers; The Very Reverend Father George Litas, The Very Reverend Father Elpidios Karalis, The Very Reverend Father Evagrios Koutouzis, The Reverend Father Emmanuel Stamatiou, The Reverend Father Kosmas Damianides, The Reverend Father John Athanasiou, and Deacon Evan Battalis Six Altar Boys also gathered to take their places in leading the Procession to the makeshift stage Surrounding the Procession were eager swimmers, ready to dive for the Holy Cross The professionalism of the day manifested itself in the organised approach taken towards all matters There were 9 tents for the Food Stalls where souvlakia, fruit, sweets and drinks would later be served; 2 tents for the Reverend Fathers to prepare for the Service; 2 Surf Rescue Guards on standby; a large banner that displayed the event with the words: Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia: Combined Epiphany Celebration: Blessing of the Waters; the Archdiocesan, Greek and Australian Flags on a stand; a makeshift stage with four palm branches one on each corner, and two large potted palms on either side of the table bearing the golden chalice with the Blessed Water, the Bible, the Holy Cross and other religious items; and an effective sound system The finishing touch was the signature Epiphany 2012 Tee-shirts worn by all the volunteer workers and the swimmers There was no doubting that much forethought, effort and preparation had gone into this event At the celebration of Epiphany, the Holy Cross is thrown into the water, thus sanctifying it In turn, the whole of creation is sanctified Before the commencement of the Service, everyone took their places This included the six Altar Boys in the lead Next was the the icon of the Epiphany, held by the Vice President of the Hellenic Community of WA, Mr Petros Agapitos, and the President of the Greek Orthodox Community (Evangelismos) of Western Australia, Dr Nick Toufexis Then there came the Reverend Fathers, followed by the chanters On stage, the Reverend Fathers took turns to conduct the Service, all in harmony and unison, complementing each other perfectly in their distinct and individual ways Surrounding the stage were 17 young males, quietly anxious in anticipation of their great role; to retrieve the Holy Cross from the waters Of varying ages, the boys included students from St Andrew s Greek Orthodox Grammar School, represented by the Head of Primary School, Mr Wayne Cronin A special blessing was read by The Very Reverend Father Elpidios and soon after, the swimmers were led to the river s edge by Reverend Father Emmanuel Here it took three attempts for Father Emmanuel to throw the Cross at a suitable distance for the swimmers to compete for its retrieval Nonetheless, this was achieved and the swimmer to retrieve the Cross was Evangelos (Evan) Papadopoulos, son of Spiro and Patricia Papadopoulos At the conclusion of the Service, a gold cross was placed on Evan s neck by Father Emmanuel whilst medals were given to all of the other swimmers In his concluding speech, Reverend Father Emmanuel acknowledged the presence of the Consul of Greece, the Honourable Ms Sofia Choli He also made special mention of the late Mr Chris Gogos (jeweller) and his family for the perpetual donation of a gold cross for this particular annual event Their generosity in this regard is held in very high esteem by Perth s Parishes Finally, Father Emmanuel thanked the key donors of the day s event for the various food and drink items, the volunteer workers, the swimmers, the rescue team, and those responsible for the entertainment that would follow He ended by reminding us that the Trinitarian God was revealed on this day and that Christ sanctifies the waters to wash us all clean of our sins The parishioners were then invited to venerate the Holy Cross As the crowd eventually dispersed, it was evident that all were impressed with the special aura of the event and its professional standard in organisation As one person commented to me: We can do it! We can! And I believe that Perth s Parishes will ensure that it is an even bigger event next year KAI TOU CRONOU! Dr Angela Evangelinou-Yiannakis Perth, Western Australia
