WEEKLY MESSAGE On the Third Sunday of the Great Fast, the Church places in front of us the Precious and Holy Cross of Our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ. We are half-way through our Great Lenten Journey; just as with any journey, we see a sign of what is ahead of us on the road. Every traveler needs to be reminded of the destination every now and then during the journey. That is the case today. The Holy Cross is our destination. The challenging words of Christ in today s Gospel speak profoundly of the destination of the Great Fast. If we desire to follow Christ, we cannot avoid our cross. Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. (Mark 8.34) The Great Fast is not about a diet or mastering some fantastic vegan recipe. The Great Fast is about one thing and only one thing. It is about learning to deny ourselves and take up our cross. In the case of every journey, if we don t know where we are headed, we are destined to get lost along the way. If we don t understand the Great Fast as a journey to the Cross of Christ, then we may lose weight because we fasted, but we will never follow Christ into heaven. If we don t understand the Great Fast is about putting our agenda aside, we will never learn the path to paradise. The destination matters. During the Divine Liturgy today, we will process the Precious Cross around the Church while we sing the hymn, We venerate Your Cross, O Master, and we glorify Your Holy Resurrection. Τον Σταυρο ν σου προσκυνούμεν, Δε σποτα, και την αγι αν σου ανα στασιν δοξα ζομεν. Without the Cross, there is no Resurrection. If we are going to celebrate Holy and Great Pascha in a few weeks, then we must first encounter the Cross. Life without struggle is life without relief, and life without sorrow is life without joy. If we desire to follow Christ into heaven, the only way is to follow Him first to the Cross. This is why the Orthodox Church lifts the Cross high in the Holy of Holies for all to see. For us, the Cross is a sign of victory over death. It is a sign of life. It is a sign of the power of God. I invite you to take an opportunity and evaluate your Great Lenten journey so far. Has it brought you closer to Christ? Has it been a struggle? Has it opened your eyes to your sinfulness? If not, then you may not be on the right path. Thankfully, the Church reminds you where you are headed if you desire to follow Christ. The cross is the sign of our destination, and when it comes to our road to heaven, the destination matters!

TODAY S SPECIAL SERVICES NO SERVICES SCHEDULED CELEBRATING FREEDOM Just as our Greek ancestors gathered in the Monastery of Holy Lavra in 1821 to receive the blessing and prayers of the Church, it is in the same character that we gather here today for the blessing and prayers of the Church to celebrate our freedom from tyranny and death. We must not forget that the freedom for which we fight is granted to us by God Himself, and it comes at a price: the willingness to allow all to be free. Freedom is a gift from God that has been granted to every human being. When we celebrate it, we are celebrating the gift of life that has been given to us by God, and so we must never forget that long before March 25 th was known as Greek Independence Day, it was known as the Feast of the Annunciation -- a precursor to the Good News of the freedom from death, victoriously claimed by Our Lord Jesus Christ more than 2,000 years ago. The Church stands willing and able with blessings and prayers, as she has for so many centuries, in the joy and celebration of freedom. I look forward to joining the Hellenic Presidential Guard, alongside with you, following Divine Liturgy today, as we march in celebration of God s gift of freedom for this year s Greek Independence Day Parade. + Fr Athanasios C Haros 40-DAY PRAYER LIST Kostas, Maria, Irene, Panagiotis, Vissarion, Artemis, Nick, Natassa, Efi Prayer for a Sick Person Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, who have sent Your only-begotten Son and our Lord Jesus Christ to heal every sickness and infirmity, visit and heal me Your servant from all physical and spiritual ailments through the grace of Your Christ. EPISTLE Hebrews 4:14-16, 5:1-6 B rethren, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek." GOSPEL Mark 8:34-38; 9:1 T he Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power." HOLY EUCHARIST (HOLY COMMUNION) Holy Communion is a Sacrament within the Orthodox Church and is only offered to Baptized and/or Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As you come to receive, please follow the direction of the Parish Council Members, Ushers, and Acolytes. We remind everyone that the Blessed Bread (Antidoron) offered at the end of the Divine Liturgy may be received by all.

Resurrectional Apolytikion When the angelic powers appeared at your tomb, those who guarded You became as though dead, and standing by Your sepulcher was Mary seeking Your pure and sacred body. For You did vanquish Hades and uncorrupted by its touch You came unto the virgin woman, bestowing the gift of life, O You who rose from the dead. Lord we give glory to You. For the Feast Save, O Lord, Your people and bless Your inheritance, granting victory to the faithful over the enemy, and by Your Cross protecting Your commonwealth. Of the Church An example of the Faith, and a life of humility, as a teacher of abstinence You did inspire and lead Your flock and through the truthfulness of Your deeds were exalted by greatness through Your humility, uplifting all and by poverty gaining wealth. Father and Hierarch Saint Nicholas, intercede with Christ our God that our souls may be saved. Kontakion O Champion General, I your City now ascribe to you triumphant anthems as the tokens of my gratitude, being rescued from the terrors, O Theotokos. Inasmuch as you have power unassailable, from all kinds of perils free me so that unto you I may cry aloud: Rejoice, O unwedded Bride. PASCHAL SEASON DECORATIONS If you would like to contribute to the floral decoration of our Cathedral for Great Lent and Holy Week, kindly drop off your monetary gift at the parish office. You may also contact Mr Kenny Henderson, who graciously volunteered to help us collect funds, by calling him at 727-942-4747.

Saints and Feasts of the Week ANNUNCIATION OF THE THEOTOKOS Six months after John the Forerunner's conception, the Archangel Gabriel was sent by God to Nazareth, a town of Galilee, unto Mary the Virgin, who had come forth from the Temple a mature maiden (see Nov. 21). According to the tradition handed down by the Fathers, she had been betrothed to Joseph four months. On coming to Joseph's house, the Archangel declared: "Rejoice, thou Full of Grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women." After some consideration, and turmoil of soul, and fear because of this greeting, the Virgin, when she had finally obtained full assurance concerning God's unsearchable condescension and the ineffable dispensation that was to take place through her, and believing that all things are possible to the Most High, answered in humility: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word." And at this, the Holy Spirit came upon her, and the power of the Most High overshadowed her all-blameless womb, and the Son and Word of God, Who existed before the ages, was conceived past speech and understanding, and became flesh in her immaculate body (Luke 1:26-38). Bearing in her womb the Uncontainable One, the blessed Virgin went with haste from Nazareth to the hill country of Judea, where Zacharias had his dwelling; for she desired to find Elizabeth her kinswoman and rejoice together with her, because, as she had learned from the Archangel, Elizabeth had conceived in her old age. Furthermore, she wished to tell her of the great things that the Mighty One had been wellpleased to bring to pass in her, and she greeted Elizabeth and drew nigh to her. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, she felt her six-month-old babe, Saint John the Baptist, prophesied of the dawning of the spiritual Sun. Immediately, the aged Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and recognized her as the Mother of her Lord, and with a great voice blessed her and the Fruit that she held within herself. The Virgin also, moved by a supernatural rejoicing in the spirit, glorified her God and Savior, saying: "My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour," and the rest, as the divine Luke hath recorded (1:39-55) O SUNDAY OF THE HOLY CROSS With the help of God, we have almost reached the middle of the course of the Fast, where our strength has been worn down through abstinence, and the full difficulty of the labor set before us becomes apparent. Therefore our holy Mother, the Church of Christ, now brings to our help the all-holy Cross, the joy of the world, the strength of the faithful, the staff of the just, and the hope of sinners, so that by venerating it reverently, we might receive strength and grace to complete the divine struggle of the Fast.

LEARN HOW TO PLAY THE BOUZOUKI The City of Tarpon Springs is pleased to present a series of workshops in Greek bouzouki for youth and adults by Leonidas Zafiris and Elias Poulos. Originally from Greece, Zafiris is a professional bouzouki musician and teacher. Prior to working in Toronto for many years, he played bouzouki for many of the top vocalists in Greece.
