Greek Community Care Centre Development of a Greek Community within Charleswood Care Centre May 27/15 Goal: to develop a grouping of Greek Residents within the care centre. Ideally, with a large enough group there would be the opportunity to re-design one unit for the Greek Residents to include an adjoining lounge and dining area. Considerations: Menu and diet with opportunities to enjoy traditional Greek foods Celebration of significant Greek Orthodox events: Christmas, Easter and Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (August 15th) Opportunities for the priest from the Greek Orthodox Church to visit and provide services if desired. Opportunities for members of the Greek Community to visit with several Residents together in a group setting. Opportunities for members of the Greek community to come and provide entertainment and share other aspects of the culture with other Residents and staff to help the larger care centre population understand the Greek culture more fully. Tours for members of the Greek community to become familiar with the care centre. All of the above considerations are possible now within our current set-up and structure. This would help to build the sense of understanding and unity with the Greek community. Next steps: Members of the Seniors Group to visit the care centre to become more familiar with the structure and set up. They will be the main contact for the day to day planning going forward. Shelley Ireland, Social Worker from the care centre will be the primary contact to discuss placement of residents at the care centre and to provide tours. Linda Sundevic, Executive Director will be the primary contact for the development of a grouping of Residents and discussions of a partnership to develop common and dining space (construction). Christos Argiriou will be the contact if there are questions or concerns. Thoughts from our Parish Priest Αγαπητοί εν Κυρίω, Αρχίζοντας το καλοκαίρι, έχουμε πολλές προετοιμασίες στην κοινότητα μας. Το Folkorama είναι η κύρια εκδήλωση του καλοκαιριού για την κοινότητα μας. Είναι πολύ ωραίο να υπάρχει κίνηση στην κοινότητα μας, αφού αυτό το μέρος είναι το κέντρο της πολιτιστικής και πνευματικής μας ζωής. Με το Folkorama, οι εθελοντές μας ακούραστα ετοιμάζονται να δεχτούν τους πολλούς επισκέπτες που θα περάσουν από τις πόρτες μας να δοκιμάσουν ένα μικρό δείγμα του ελληνικού πολιτισμού και ελληνικής μαγειρικής. Οι επισκέπτες μας θα έρθουν να γευτούν, όχι μόνο το φαγητό μας, αλλά και τον πολιτισμό και τρόπο ζωής μας. Για πολλούς από εμάς, το να είσαι Έλληνας είναι κάτι που το ζούμε, στoν τρόπο σκέψης, στο φαγητό, και στις παραδόσεις. Όλα είναι για εμάς ο καθημερινός τρόπος ζωής μας. Αυτό που εμείς έχουμε ως καθημερινό, για τους επισκέπτες μας είναι κάτι το διαφορετικό και μοναδικό, και έρχονται να δουν όχι μόνο τον πολιτισμό μας, αλλά και εμάς ως λαό. Ας παρουσιάσουμε τους καλύτερους εαυτούς μας, και ας δείξουμε στους επισκέπτες μας τι είναι ο Έλληνας - όχι το σουβλάκι και την σπανακόπιτα - αλλά η φιλοξενία μας, και η αγάπη για τις δυο πατρίδες μας - την Ελλάδα και τον Καναδά. Οι εθελοντές της κατασκηνώσης μας πρόθυμα ετοιμάζονται για μια εβδομάδα φιλίας, πίστης, και πνευματικής μόρφωσης. Ένα από τα θαυμάσια πράγματα στην κατασκήνωση είναι, ότι μας βγάζει έξω από την καθημερινότητα της ζωής και μας δίνει την ευκαιρία να κοιτάξουμε εσωτερικά, και να συλλογιστούμε τον Θεό και τη σχέση μας με Αυτόν. Είμαι πολύ ενθουσιασμένος που θα περάσω μια εβδομάδα με την νεολαία μας, για να μοιραστούμε την πίστη μας στον Ιησού Χριστό. Πιστέψτέ με, η κατασκήνωση Μεταμόρφωση είναι μια οικογένεια, η οποία έχει δημιουργήσει χριστιανικές φιλίες και ακόμα και γάμους από τον πρώτο χρόνο της λειτουργίας της. Για τη νεολαία μας, η κατασκήνωση είναι ένα παράθυρο σε λίγο χρόνο ησυχίας, και μια ευκαιρία να ρωτήσουν ειλικρινά τους εαυτούς τους, ποιος είμαι. Το καλοκαίρι, μαζί με τις διακοπές και τη ζέστη που μας προσφέρει, φέρνει και μια μεγάλη γιορτή της Εκκλησίας μας, την Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου. Γιορτάζουμε την αρχή της αιώνιας ζωής της Μητέρας του Κυρίου μας. Είναι μια τόσο όμορφη γιορτή που η Εκκλησία συχνά την ονομάζει το Πάσχα του καλοκαιριού. Ελπίζω να σας δω στις Παρακλήσεις προς την Θεοτόκο που θα κάνουμε τις πρώτες δεκαπέντε μέρες του Αυγούστου, όπως ετοιμαζόμαστε για αυτή την μεγάλη γιορτή της Εκκλησίας μας. Η Θεοτόκος πάντα να πρεσβεύει στον Υιό της και Κύριο μας για εμάς, και να μας καθοδηγήσει σε Αυτόν μέσω του παραδείγματος της ταπεινότητας και υπακοής στον Θεό. Όπως κάνουμε κάθε χρόνο, η εκκλησία μας δεν θα λειτουργήσει τον Ιούλιο, αφού θα παρευρεθώ στην διετή Κληρικολαΐκή Συνέλευση την Μητροπόλεως μας στη πόλη St. Catharines, από 3 έως 10 Ιουλίου. Γράφοντας αυτό, σκέφτομαι τους προηγούμενους δέκα μήνες που έχω κλείσει ως ιερέας στον Αγ. Δημήτριο. Η αλήθεια είναι ότι οι δέκα μήνες πέρασαν πολύ γρήγορα για μένα και την οικογένεια μου, προσπαθώντας να ρυθμίσουμε τη ζωή μας εδώ, αλλά ήταν δέκα πολύ καλοί μήνες. Είμαι ευλογημένος να υπηρετώ μια τόσο όμορφη εκκλησία, και εγώ και η οικογένεια μου είμαστε πολύ ευτυχισμένοι να ανήκουμε σε μια τόσο ζεστή και αγαπημένη κοινότητα. Thoughts from our Parish Priest Dear in Christ, As we enter our summer months we have a lot of preparations happening in our community, Folklorama being the main cultural event of the summer for our community. It s great to see movement in our community, as this place is the centre of our cultural and spiritual lives. With Folklorama coming up, our volunteers are tirelessly getting ready to receive the many guests who will walk through our doors to experience a small sample our Hellenic culture and cuisine. Our guests will arrive at our community to taste, not only our food, but our culture and our way of life. For most of us, being Greek is something we live, from the way we think, to the food, to the traditions. It is all a daily norm for us. What we sometimes take for granted, for our guests it is something different and unique, and they are coming to experience, not only our culture, but us, as a people. Let us all present our best selves to our guests, and show them what a Greek is, not the souvlaki and the spanakopita, but our philoxenia and our love for our two countries - Greece and Canada. Our Camp Metamorphosis staff is eagerly preparing for a week of fellowship, faith, and spiritual education. One of the wonderful things about camp is that it removes us from the every-day and gives us a chance to look inwardly and to contemplate God and our relationship with Him and with each other. I m very excited to spend a week with our young people and to share in our faith of Jesus Christ. Make no mistake, Camp Met is a family, one that has created and shaped Christian friendships and even marriages since the camp s first year. For our youth, camp is a window to some much-needed down time and a chance to truly ask themselves, Who am I? The summer, besides the vacation time and warm weather that it offers, brings a wonderful Feast Day in our Church: The Falling Asleep of the Theotokos. It is is the celebration of the beginning of the eternal life of the the Mother of our Lord. It is such a beautiful Feast that our church often calls it the Pascha of the summer. I hope to see you at the Paraklesis (Supplication) services during the first fifteen days of August, as we prepare to celebrate this great Feast Day of our Church. I pray the Theotokos intercedes to her Son and our Lord for all of us and leads us to Him through her example of humility and obedience to God. As we do every year, our church will be closed for July, as I will be attending our biennial Clergy-Laity Conference in St. Catharines, Ontario, from July 3 to July 10. As I write this, I think back on the past ten months I ve been the priest at St. Demetrios. The truth is, the past ten months have passed very quickly for us, as we have been adjusting to life in Winnipeg, but they have been ten great months. I have been blessed to serve such a beautiful church, and my family and I are truly happy to belong to such a caring and warm community. Message from the Community President Aγαπητοί Συμπάρικοι, Mε χαρά καλωσορίζουμε το καλοκαίρι και φέτος στην πόλη μας και θα ήθελα να σας μεταφέρω τις ευχές μου για ένα υπέροχο καλοκαίρι μαζί με τις οικογένειες σας. Να σας θυμίσω, ότι την πρώτη εβδομάδα του Αυγούστου έχουμε και φέτος το Folklorama, που το περιμένουμε με μεγάλη ανυπομονησία, καθώς οι ετοιμασίες με σκοπό το καλύτερο αποτέλεσμα για μια δυναμική παρουσία του Ελληνικού περιπτέρου έχουν ήδη ξεκινήσει. Θα ήθελα, επίσης, να ευχαριστήσω από τα βάθη της καρδιάς μου την Αθηνά Ντίνος (Ελληνικό Σχολείο), Angie Χουβαρδά (Κατηχητικό), τον Μίλτο Λαουτατζής (Χορωδία), Αγάπη Κατράκη (Λιλιπούπολη), Βάνα Αγγλογάλου (Seniors), Γιώργο Μακρή (ΚΕΦΙ), Ειρήνη Μαυρούδη (Σχολή Βυζαντινής Μουσικής), Δήμητρα Βλάχου (Φιλόπτωχος), και όλους τους οργανισμούς, τη νεολαία και τους εθελοντές μας που με το έργο και την προσφορά τους χαρίζουν πλούτο και πολυμορφία στο έργο της Κοινότητας μας. Πριν κλείσω αυτό το σύντομο μήνυμα θα ήθελα να σας ανακοινώσω και κάτι ακόμα. Μετά από τέσσερα χρόνια έρευνας και προσπάθειας καταφέραμε να βρούμε ένα χώρο σε ένα Senior s Home (Οίκο ευγηρίας), που είναι πρόθυμοι να μας βοηθήσουν να δημιουργήσουμε μια ελληνική ατμόσφαιρα για όσους ηλικιωμένους Ελληνες πάνε εκεί. Message from the Community President Dear fellow members, It is with joy that we welcome the summer to our city once again. I would like to convey to you my wishes for a wonderful summer with your families. I want to remind you that we are hosting the Greek Pavilion for Folklorama during the first week of August, which we are waiting for with great excitement. Preparations have already started, our goal being a dynamic presence of the Greek Pavilion. I also wish to thank from the bottom of my heart Athina Dinos (Greek School Principal), Angie Houvardas (Sunday School), Milto Lautatzis (Church Choir), Agapi Katrakis (Lilipoupoli Group), Vana Aglogallos (Seniors Group), George Makris (Kefi Dancers), Irini Mavroudis (Byzantine Music School), Debbie Vlahos (Philoptochos), and all the organizations, our youth and our volunteers, who through their work and volunteerism have enriched the work of our community. Before I end my message I wish to announce one more thing. After four years of research and effort, we managed to find a space at a Seniors Home that is eager to help us create a Greek atmosphere for any seniors that live at that home. We will be able to offer to our people everything from entertainment to Divine Liturgy, especially if we manage to have an entire wing of the building full of our people. If you need more information, you may contact myself or Mr. Chris Argiriou, as there are some steps and processes for someone to be accepted at that home. Church Etiquette When attending Divine Services we all have the responsibility of maintaining proper decorum and atmosphere in the church. The very first thing to keep in mind is that we are to be at Divine Services on time. The church is the House of God. Reverence and good manners are required at all times. No irreverent or irrelevant conversations should go on in the Narthex or in the church proper. There are certain times during the Divine Services when no one should be moving about, or entering the church, or being seated at a pew. Wherever a person happens to be at these moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently until the proper moment to be seated. These times are: 1. During the Doxology, while the priest is censing. 2. During the Small Entrance - The procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gospel. 3. When the priest censes the Altar, icons, and congregation throughout the Divine Liturgy. 4. During the reading of the Epistle and Gospel. 5. During the sermon. 6. During the Great Entrance - the procession of the priest and altar boys with the Holy Gifts. 7. During the recitation of the Creed and Lord s Prayer (Our Father). 8. During the Consecration of the Holy Gifts. (Se Imnoumen) 9. During Holy Communion.To receive Holy Communion the faithful should come forth from the side aisles and exit via the centre aisle to return to their pew. 10. When receiving any sacrament of the church, use your baptismal/chrismation name. 11. During any special services such as Memorials or blessing of the loaves, special doxologies, etc. The general rule is that whenever the priest is outside the Holy Altar either with the censer or for giving a blessing, there should be no movement in the church. Also, we remind everyone that we should attend the Divine Liturgy and all services of divine worship from the beginning. Please remember that Parish Council members are obligated to maintain order and decorum in the church during worship. Please try to understand us. Cooperate with us. Εκκλησιαστική Εθιμοτυπία Όταν είμαστε στην εκκλησία, όλοι έχουμε την ευθύνη να κρατήσουμε την σωστή ευπρέπεια και ατμόσφαιρα του ναού. Το πρώτο πράγμα που πρέπει να θυμόμαστε είναι ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην εκκλησία στην ώρα μας. Η εκκλησία είναι ο οίκος του Θεού. Η ευλάβεια και οι σωστοί τρόποι απαιτούνται πάντα. Δεν πρέπει να γίνεται άσχετη ή ασεβής συζήτηση στον Νάρθηκα ή μέσα στον ναό. Υπάρχουν μερικές στιγμές στις ακολουθίες που κανένας δεν πρέπει να κινείται, η να μπαίνει στην εκκλησία, η να κάθεται. Όπου και να βρίσκεται ο άνθρωπος σε αυτές τις στιγμές, πρέπει να σταματήσει και να σταθεί όρθιος με σεβασμό έως την κατάλληλη στιγμή να καθίσει. Αυτές οι στιγμές είναι, 1. Στην Δοξολογία, όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει. 2. Στην Μικρή Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής του Ευαγγελίου με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 3. Όταν ο ιερέας θυμιάζει το Ιερό, τις εικόνες, και τον κόσμο στην διάρκεια της Θείας Λειτουργίας. 4. Στην ανάγνωση του Αποστόλου και του Ευαγγελίου. 5. Στο κήρυγμα. 6. Στην Μεγάλη Είσοδο, στην διάρκεια της πομπής των Αγίων Δώρων με τα ιερόπαιδα και τον ιερέα. 7. Στην απαγγελία του Πιστεύω και της Κυριακής Προσευχής (Πάτερ Ημών). 8. Στην Αναφορά (καθαγίαση) Των Αγίων Δώρων (Στον ύμνο Σε Υμνούμεν). 9. Στην Θεία Κοινωνία. Για να λάβουν τη Θεία Κοινωνία, οι πιστοί έρχονται από το πλάι και επιστρέφουν στις θέσεις τους από το μεσαίο διάδρομο. 10. Όταν λαμβάνουμε ένα Μυστήριο της Εκκλησίας, χρησιμοποιούμε το βαπτιστικό μας όνομα. 11. Σε ειδικές ακολουθίες, σαν τα μνημόσυνα, τις αρτοκλασίες, ειδικές δοξολογίες, κλπ. Ο γενικός κανόνας είναι, όταν ο ιερέας είναι εκτός του Ιερού, είτε με το θυμιατό ή για να δώσει ευλογία, δεν γίνεται κίνηση στην εκκλησία. Επίσης, θυμίζουμε όλους ότι πρέπει να είμαστε στην Λειτουργία και σε όλες τις ακολουθίες από την αρχή. Μη ξεχνάτε ότι τα μέλη του συμβουλίου είναι υποχρεωμένα να κρατήσουν την τάξη και την ευπρέπεια στην εκκλησία. Ζητάμε την κατανόηση σας. Συνεργαστείτε μαζί μας. Οι ιερείς είναι εδώ να υπηρετήσουν. Η συνεργασία σας στην παρακολούθηση αυτών των κανονισμών θα μα βοηθήσει πολύ στο έργο μας να προσφέρουμε τη βοήθεια μας σε όλες τις πνευματικές ανάγκες σας. 15

Church Iconography Program Beloved in Christ, In this bulletin you will find the program of our iconography, as well as a sample of what the icons will look like. On the page with the icons, the top layer is the New Testament icons, which will be put up on the right side of the church (as you face the Altar). The bottom layer is the Old Testmanent icons, which will be put up on the left side of the church. The theme is Promise and Fulfillment, and it depicts the promises given by God in the Old Testament, and the parallel, or fulfillment of that promise in the New Testament. The icons that have not been crossed out are the ones still available. These icons will be installed on the top halves of the side walls of our church. We are also installing icons of individuals saints along the lower halves of the side walls of the church. There is no program for these icons, meaning that each donor can choose the saint to be depicted (as long as it hasn t been donated or reserved painted already). I can give you some suggestions if you d like. Finally, we are changing the small icons on the iconostasis (temblon) of our Altar, as the current ones have been aged and darkened. This is the list of the icons needing replacement on the Iconostasis: - The Annunciation of the Theotokos - The Presentation of the child Jesus to the Temple - The Raising of Lazarus from the dead - Doubting Thomas - The Ascension of Christ - The Holy Pentecost The price for a scriptural scene (upper half of the walls) panel is $9,500.00. The price for an individual saint (lower half of the walls) is $2,500.00. The price for the icons on the Iconostasis is $2,500.00 You can also make a general donation toward the iconography of the church. We have also had people get together and donate an icon as a group. Greetings from the Ladies of Philoptochos Greetings, Summer is now in full swing, and so are the preparations for Folklorama. We are so blessed to be hosting the 46th Greek Pavilion, we have hosted every year since the start of this wonderful cultural festival. This would not be possible without the many cheerful, returning volunteers who year after year dedicate the best days of summer to helping our community shine. It is amazing how resourceful our volunteers are and how they give the best of their talent and time, and come up with fresh new ideas year after year. I invite you all to come and partake in the Taste of Greece prepared by the food experts from our community. Enjoy world class entertainment and experience our beautiful culture! You know your enjoyment is guaranteed! The Philoptochos mission continues, we have sent help to Hamougelo Tou Paidiou, and also, thanks to a volunteer who is travelling to Greece this summer, we are able to directly purchase and deliver needed food supplies to a church in Athens that provides meals for the homeless. Together we are accomplishing Christ s commandment to feed the hungry. On July 12th we are honoured to have his Eminence Metropolitan Archbishop Sotirios of Toronto visit our parish and serve divine liturgy. Philoptochos will be hosting a coffee hour that day. We have many Saints feast days over summer, most distinguished is the 15th of August, the Dormition of our Lady the Theotokos. It is also known as the Little Pascha of Summer and is beautifully described by the Orthodox Church in America: The feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos is the celebration of the fact that all men are highly exalted in the blessedness of the victorious Christ, and that this high exaltation has already been accomplished in Mary the Theotokos. The feast of the Dormition is the sign, the guarantee, and the celebration that Mary s fate is, the destiny of all those of low estate whose souls magnify the Lord, whose spirits rejoice in God the Saviour, whose lives are totally dedicated to hearing and keeping the Word of God which is given to men in Mary s child, the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In giving birth, you preserved your virginity. In failing asleep you did not forsake the world, O Theotokos. You were translated to life, O Mother of Life, and by your prayers, you deliver our souls from death. Χαίρετίσματα απο τις Κυρίες της Φιλοπτώχου Μπηκαμε για καλα στο καλοκαιρι και στις προετοιμασιες του Φολκλοραμα. Ειναι μεγαλη ευλογια να συνεχιζεται για 46 χρονια η τοσο ομορφη πανηγυρις της παραδοσης μας. Θα ηταν αδυνατον να γινει αυτο χωρις την προθυμη και αξιολογη προσφορα των εθελοντων μας στα μεσα του καλοκαιριου μια θυσια οντως, για να λαμψει το μεγαλειο της καρδιας της πανεμορφης μας Κοινοτητας. Ο Θεος να μας εχει ολους καλα! Ολοι εισαστε καλεσμενοι να χαρειτε και να απολαυσετε τις υπεροχες γευσεις της Ελληνικης Κουζινας που εχουν ετοιμασει με αγαπη και πολυ μερακι οι καλλιτεροι στο ειδος τους. Ευχαριστουμε και ειμαστε ευγνωμονες για αυτο.επισης να καμαρωσετε τους χορευτες μας και οτι καλλιτερο προσφερει η κουλτουρα μας στην ομορφη αυτη γιορτη. Το εργο της Φιλοπτωχου συνεχιζεται, δεν υπαρχουν διακοπες στις αναγκες του πλησιον. Με μελος της αδελφοτητος που ταξιδεψε στη Αθηνα στειλαμε χρηματα στο γνωστο σε ολους Χαμογελο του παιδιου και για αγορα τροφιμων που ετοιμαζει φαγητο μια εκκλησια για τους αστεγους. Στις 12 Ιουλιου θα εχουμε την τιμη να μας επισκεφτει και να τελεσει την θεια Λειτουργια ο Σεβασμιωτατος Μητροπολιτης μας κ. Σωτηριος και η Φιλοπτωχος θα προσφερει τον καφε. Πολλες οι εορτες των Αγιων κατα τους μηνας Ιουλιο και Αυγουστο και ζηταμε την μεσιτεια τους ομως ξεχωριζει απο ολες η Κοιμησις της Υπεραγιας Θεοτοκου στις 15 Αυγουστου οπως πολυ σωστα ο λαος μας την αποκαλει το Πασχα του Καλοκαριου και η Ορθοδοξη Εκκλησια της Αμερικης γραφει: Η Εορτη της Κοιμησεως της Θεοτοκου εινα η Γιορτη της ανυψωσεως του ανθρωπου στην ευλογημενη βασιλεια του Χριστου και η βεβαιωσις και ο προορισμος ολων των πεσμενων χαμηλα να μεγαλυνουν τον Κυριον και να αγαλειαζει το πνευμα μας στον Θεον να τηρουμε τον Λογο Του οπως εδοθει στον Υιο της Παναγια μας στον Σωτηρα και Λυτρωτη του κοσμου. Η εκκλησια ψαλλει: Εν τη γεννησει την παρθενιαν εφυλαξας εν τη κοιμησει τον κοσμον ου κατελειπες Θεοτοκε.
