Message from Father George OUR BIBLE STUDY CLASS BEGINS A MINI TOPIC DISCUSSION THIS WEEK Last Wednesday our Bible Study class completed the Acts of the Apostles. We went through each of the twenty-eight chapters and examined the text using the New King James version of the Bible. As I had addressed a few weeks ago, the NKJV is the version of the Bible that the Orthodox Churches have unofficially adopted since it is the version used in the Orthodox Study Bible. The Orthodox Study Bible is an English-language translation and annotation of the Christian Bible published by Thomas Nelson. In addition to the Eastern Orthodox Christian biblical canon, it offers commentary and other material to show the Eastern Orthodox Christian understanding of Scripture. The primary theme of the book of Acts was the spread of the Gospel message by the Holy Apostles from Jerusalem and the event of the first Christian Pentecost. The introduction of the book describes the background as a spiritual and theological record of how the Christian Church developed through her earliest and formative years. Throughout Acts, the author Saint Luke the Evangelist tells the captivating story of the life of the Apostles in and around the city of Jerusalem and then through the sprawling Roman Empire through the exploits of Saint Paul. I believe the members of our class learned a great deal of how different and difficult life was during the New Testament era. They also gained some valuable insight into the teaching of our Orthodox Faith through the commentary by Orthodox theologians in the Orthodox Study Bible and from each other though questions and discussions. We will continue our Wednesday evening classes leaving the text of the Bible for a few weeks to study the pamphlet Prayer and the Departed Saints by David C. Ford. The booklet begins with the innocent question: Daddy, what happens when someone dies? If you have ever had this or similar questions on this topic, we would encourage you to join us on Wednesday at 7:00 pm in the Coffee Room for the beginning of this edifying study. We are making available copies of this pamphlet before we meet this week. If you would like to pre-read it, please ask for a copy. CHURCH DIRECTORY Work on the long awaited church directory is underway. Heads, or head, of households will have their names published with their current home address. Likewise, telephone numbers and cell numbers available to the Cathedral office will be included for each. Children's names, however, will not be listed. If you DO NOT WISH to have your telephone or cell number in the directory, call the Cathedral office by September 30. Also when You raised the dead from the netherworld, all the Powers of the heavens were crying out: O Giver of life, Christ our God, glory be to You. Apolytikion of the Hieromartyr Tone 4 Becoming a partner with the Apostles in way of life and successor to their thrones, O God-inspired Saint, in the active life you found an entrance to contemplation. Hence you rightly expounded the word of truth, and you shed your blood in struggling for the faith, O Hieromartyr Babylas. Intercede with Christ our God, beseeching that our souls be saved. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. O Loving One, glory to You. Kontakion Tone 4 In your holy birth, Immaculate One, Joachim and Anna were rid of the shame of childlessness; Adam and Eve of the corruption of death. And so your people, free of the guilt of their sins, celebrate crying: "The barren one gives birth to the Theotokos, who nourishes our life."

THE EPISTLE I Corinthians 9:2-12 BRETHREN, you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. This is my defense to those who would examine me. Do we not have the right to our food and drink? Do we not have the right to be accompanied by a wife, as the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas? Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living? Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Who tends a flock without getting some of the milk? Do I say this on human authority? Does not the law say the same? For it is written in the law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain." Is it for oxen that God is concerned? Does he not speak entirely for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of a share in the crop. If we have sown spiritual good among you, is it too much if we reap your material benefits? If others share this rightful claim upon you, do not we still more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ. THE GOSPEL Matthew 18:23-35 The Lord said this parable: "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the reckoning, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents; and as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, 'Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. But that same servant, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said, 'Pay what you owe.' So his fellow servant fell down and besought him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' He refused and went and put him in prison till he should pay the debt. When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. Then his lord summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you besought me; and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?' And in anger his lord delivered him to the jailors, till he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to everyone of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart."
