Welcome to Saint Nicholas on this Sunday, October 29, 2017 St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20 Today we commemorate: 7th Sunday of Luke Anastasia the Martyr of Rome Our Righteous Father Abramius EPISTLE READING Prokeimenon. Mode 4. Psalm 103.24,1 O Lord, how manifold are your works. You have made all things in wisdom. Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20 Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

The Gospel According to Luke 8:41-56 GOSPEL READING At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter and those who were with him said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

COFFEE HOUR Hello Church family, As many of you know, Coffee Hour is one of Philoptochos many ministries and one that touches both guests and members of this Parish. That is why we collectively decided to making changes in order to involve more parishioners and help better serve the Parish. The goal of Coffee Hour is to facilitate a welcoming environment for our guests, allow the Sunday school classes to spend more time learning and teaching, as well as a time for fellowship. We will now be serving a main dish, juice and of course, coffee at every Coffee Hour while relying on donations for the remainder of what is served. We will post a monthly menu, along with suggestions of what can be brought that day. This will be posted in the bulletin as well as the new cork board in the fellowship hall. There will also be signup sheets for each week. Moving forward all donations collected will be given to a ministry within the church, and this Sunday s coffee hour will be supporting our Sunday School ministry. Thank you all in advance and I look forward to watching this ministry grow with your help! Lindsay Hitte lmaehitte@gmail.com (941) 264-3947 October Menu: October 29th: Pumpkin Cinnamon Roll Bake

STEWARDSHIP CORNER Stewardship 2017 As the Father has sent me, I also send you! John 20:21 WHY IS THE CHURCH ALWAYS ASKING FOR MONEY? Most parish priests will say that this is what they like least about their calling. No priest wants to continue to ask people to give to the needs of the parish, but the asking must continue because the daily operation of the parish requires financial assistance for everything from the utilities, our Pastor s salary, to outreach and toward mortgage payments. In addition, it is a duty of the Church to ask for offerings, not only for the work of the parish but also for the work that is done by charitable organizations in the community. The Church sees so much suffering and so many needs and had a responsibility to address that suffering and those needs. On a number of occasions, St. Paul urges the early Church to give funds to help those in need. He even had very specific instructions in taking the collection for Jerusalem in his second letter to the Corinthians. Today the focus of the Church is much more on stewardship than on talking about money. Christian Stewardship is based on the individual s need to give thanks, not only the Church s need to receive. It is based on the premise that all that we have and all that we are comes from God and as a way to thank God for all His blessings, we return to Him a portion of the Time, Talent and Treasure allowed to us. We must desire to need to give to become good Christian Stewards. As your understanding of Christian Stewardship grows you will begin to discover this need to give and move away from the feeling that you are just giving to the needs of our Church. And when that happens, the need for the Church to ask for funds will diminish, not because the expenses cease, but because the gifts are given without asking!

WHO ART WONDROUS IN THE SAINTS Michael Nektarios Rymer, Pilgrim 28 years ago, on July 6, 1989, at Stanford University Hospital, I was diagnosed with a life-threatening disease. When hearing this I was immediately drawn to prayer and began to prepare myself for death. I was of course, filled with all sorts of feelings and went through the various stages of dealing with such news. Denial, anger, bargaining and eventually acceptance. I remembered hearing and reading about the glorious Miracle-Worker, St. Nektarios of Pentapolis. I began to offer my prayers to St. Nekatarios and asked him to help me bear whatever God had in store for me. Backing up, I want to share that I have been blessed to make three pilgrimages to the Holy Land. I was there twice for Pascha and was blessed to see the Holy Fire. Believe me when I say that this is a glorious miracle that occurs every Holy Saturday at the Tomb of Jesus. I remember clearly entering the Tomb of Christ and kneeling there in profound humility and awe. Sometime later, I had a dream. I dreamt that I was in the Tomb of Christ and was crying because I was very afraid of my illness and rather than putting all my trust in the Lord, I began to worry. During this dream, there was a monk in the Tomb who was chanting Pascal Hymns in our traditional Byzantine Chant. As I was kneeling there, this monk came and put his arm around me and caressed my face with his hand. He said to me not to worry my son, everything is going to be alright. That monk was St. Nektarios!!! It was so real. I was reminded by the various hymns of the church that the Lord works miracles through His Saints. This dream was a message to me from God. I immediately phoned my Spiritual Father and he told me to do the Akathist Hymn to Saint Nektarios. To the glory of God, these last years I have been feeling good, my health has been exceptional and I have be able to grow closer to the Lord in the Holy Trinity. How God works in our lives always amazes me. How loving and merciful is the Lord. I have been blessed to visit the Holy Relics of Saint Nektarios on the beautiful Greek Island of Aegina. Each time, I was filled with renewed faith and hope in God through the prayers of Saint Nektarios. I pray that this sharing will give some hope and strength to anyone suffering from illness; physical or spiritual to turn to the Lord and ask His Divine Mercy and help. May Our Lord through the intercession of St. Nektarios ever bless and protect us. Amen!

Due to the financial crisis in Greece, families and the elderly lack essential food items and sustainable jobs, hospitals face shortages of critical medical supplies, and refugees seeking shelter face greater challenges each day. Thanks to the generosity of the Jaharis Family Foundation, Inc., we have an opportunity to make an impact for those in need in Greece. Now through February 28, 2018, the Jaharis Family Foundation, Inc., will match the first $1 million in donations towards our Greece programs. Consider making a gift today, and your support will go twice as far. 110 West Road, Suite 360 Baltimore, MD 21204 Tel: 410.243.9820
