EDUCATION, CULTURAL, AND YOUTH MINISTRIES (ECYM) COMMITTEE MEETING Please note that the next ECYM Committee meeting is tomorrow, Monday, August 10, 2015, beginning at 7:00 pm in the boardroom. Apostle Matthias August 9 After Judas by transgression fell from his apostleship (Acts 1: 25), and hanged himself out of despair, ending his life with a wretched and shameful death (Matthew 27: 5), the number of the Twelve obviously lacked. To resolve this issue, all of the disciples gathered in one place after the Ascension of the Savior (the number of men and women being 120) and chose two men from among them Joseph, called Barsabas, who was also surnamed Justus, and Matthias. The two men were set them in the midst. Then, they prayed to God and cast lots, "and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven Apostles." (Acts 1: 15-26) And thus, having taken the place of Judas, Matthias fulfilled the work of apostleship and the prophecy concerning Judas, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David: "And his bishopric let another take." HELLENIC DANCERS VIDEOS The Hellenic Dancers are seeking copies of previous performances to include in their library. The dance troupe was formed in 1980, which means there are thirty-five (35) consecutive years of performances, many of which the group has no record. STRATEGIC PLAN INTRODUCTION AN APPEAL FROM FATHER GEORGE The Strategic Plan introductory meeting was held on Wednesday, August 5. Father George was pleased that over half of the attendees signed up for one of the thirty-four (34) Strategic Goals and plan to participate in this critical Metropolis project. Seeking more volunteers, Father will make a similar presentation at the first Ladies Philoptochos meeting in September and another presentation yet to be scheduled. He attests that the Church places great importance on the "elders," their experience, and their wisdom but wishes to include EVERYONE S input. With no offense to the faithful participants in the first presentation, he also seeks the input of the younger adults, who make up the Cathedral community, and challenges them to step up and commit to THEIR Church. It is time! Message from Father George COMMITMENT TO GOD Many of our Cathedral children are back at school and that reminds us that we will return soon into our normal routine. As your Spiritual Father, I trust that regular Sunday Church attendance will also be getting back to the normal. As a parent myself, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of making your family s Sunday Church experience the beginning point of your week. There are many things in which we as Christians are interested, whether it be sports or business or school or shopping or recreation. Whatever it might be, many of these things can be good for us educationally, economically, physically, or emotionally. They may be good things in their own right, but please do not let them derail your Spiritual well-being, which is fueled by prayer, Scripture study, fasting, and being prepared to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord whenever it is being offered, not the least of these opportunities is every Sunday during the Divine Liturgy. Saint Paul reminds us in Romans 8:39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. God loves us so completely that he not only allowed us to exercise our freewill as we see fit but also has made Himself available to make us Holy as He is Holy. He loves us and wants us to be Holy and Godly as He is. He loves us and wants us to take that love into our world. The best way to be nurtured in the love of God so that we might be prepared to share that with all is by knowing Him through prayer and Scripture study and by receiving Him regularly through the Holy Eucharist. And, is this not what we want to share with our children and loved ones? Sunday Liturgy begins at 10:00 am. When you commit to your regular visit with your Loving God, please arrive before the Liturgy starts. The Liturgy we celebrate on the regular Sunday has been compiled over the 2,000-plus years since our Church was founded. It is a systematic body of prayer that nourishes us with the Word of God and through Holy Communion of the Body and Blood of Christ. Because the reading of Scripture is an important component of every Divine Liturgy, we must get into the good and appropriate habit of arriving at Church before the 10:00 am start time. We need to recognize that if we are not in Church during the reading of Holy Scripture, we are truly not fully prepared to receive the Holy Eucharist. Now, it is understandable that there may be one Sunday when we cannot get to Church before the Epistle, but please let us make that the exception and not the rule. It is not appropriate to arrive at Church just moments before Holy Communion is offered. It is a commitment: Let us commit ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God. I pray that we will commit ourselves and our families to regular and timely Sunday attendance and participation in the Holy and Divine Liturgy.

When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of me. THE GOSPEL Matthew 17:14-23 At that time, a man came up to Him and kneeling before Him said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not heal him." And Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me." And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move hence to yonder place,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. But this kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting." As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day."
