THE ARCHANGEL S CALL - March 2018 Page 1 he Fasting period is here. We have T embarked on the Journey towards Great Lent. Our mother Church, knowing our inability to adjust to new situations abruptly, leads us slowly through several beautiful Sunday Gospel readings and Hymnology to encourage and allow us to ponder about fasting, prayer, our personal relationship with Jesus Christ and our purpose in life. There is something that is common to all humanity (Anthropos), at least from a Christian Orthodox point of view. It is that all of us at a certain point in our journey of life come to recognize and acknowledge that there is a need review our priorities or change of direction. How often do you as an Orthodox Christian, go for a heart change? I don t mean a bypass or transplant, but a change of heart in terms of your spiritual life. This is really important, because it means to be mindful of the way we walk, the way we carry out conversations, the way our eyes see, carry ourselves, the way we feel and act, and our relationship with others. Our entire body is in tune within this period of fasting. Yes,...let us commend ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God. (Divine Liturgy). Imagine those few moments when you stand in front of your God in prayer and ask for nothing earthly or material, but ask only for Him to come into your heart and stir it up in faith, love, obedience and mercy. We are talking about making our decisions in the context of the Gospel of Christ. To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in His steps. 1 Peter 2:21. The question on our lips should be, is this what Christ would want me to do? Sometimes the answer will be YES and sometimes it will be NO. That is why it is important at this time to ask these questions. What is the purpose of fasting in the life of the Orthodox Church or Ekklisia? The purpose of fasting is to learn about Christian discipline, to regain control of things that tend to control our lives, to learn how to tame our feelings and not to let them become a thermometer that TAXIARCHAE/ARCHANGELS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH WATERTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS WWW.GOARCHANGELS.ORG A blessed and fruitful Lenten Journey to all. Constantinos Magimbi measures our spiritual health. In modern cultures, food has become a central part in the lives of many people, drinking alcoholic beverages has at times become uncontrollable addictions for many. In the same spirit, St. Paul the Apostle of Christ admonishes the church in Galatia writing, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and selfcontrol. Against such things there is no law. You will notice that we started with the Gospel of Zacchaeus the seeker. It is indeed the seeker who finds. Throughout this Lenten period, we are called to seek to draw near to God. Zacchaeus had a void in his heart and nothing could fill that void. He had material things, fame, power and everything that the world could offer, but it is only Christ who could fill that void. In this Lenten period, we are given an opportunity to rebuild our brokenness. We cannot do it by ourselves, but the Mother Church in her unconditional love towards the faithful, she walks with us slowly towards several most beautiful stages in the journey to the passion, crucifixion, death and resurrection of Christ. All the services are intended to be a guiding post towards the feasts of feasts. Yes, the resurrection of Christ. The day, "He will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove his people s disgrace from all the earth. The Lord has spoken. In that day they will say, Surely this is our God; we trusted in him, and he saved us. This is the Lord, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation. (Isaiah 28:8-9) It is the hope of the Church that we are all reminded of that beautiful prayer. "O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, despair, lust of power, and idle talk. But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to Thy servant. Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own transgressions, and not to judge my brother, for blessed art Thou, unto ages of ages." Amen. St, Ephraim

THE ARCHANGEL S CALL - March 2018 Page 3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dear Parish Family, Please review the calendar in this bulletin and take the opportunity throughout Lent to attend as many services as possible to help bring us all closer to our Lord Jesus Christ. On April 1, the Annual Palm Sunday Luncheon will take place immediately after Liturgy. Please make your reservations. It is a beautiful time to share a delicious meal and spend time with other members and guests of our Church. We all look forward to being together as we begin Holy Week and follow Christ s footsteps from His crucifixion to His resurrection. Don t forget to support our Philoptochos and purchase the great baked goods for your Easter table. We need to support our ladies. They all work hard so you can dress up your Easter table with their goodies. Plan on joining us for a fabulous reception after the midnight Anastasi Service on Holy Saturday. Our Parish Council will serve a delicious assortment of mezethakia, as we break the Lenten fast together! Plans are underway for our annual festival which is coming up quickly on June 22, 23 and 24! As you all know this is our largest fundraiser of the year. I am asking all of you to take the time to participate to the best of your ability with your TIME, TALENTS AND TREASURE. We need all parishioners of all ages to commit to volunteer during the three days so that it will be successful. Let s work together and make this year s festival as successful as possible. In the coming weeks, there will be a schedule for the food preparation and we will need many hands! If you are unable to volunteer, please consider a monetary donation to help defer the expenses. This is a wonderful way to get involved and get to know your Church family. Join us and let s have a great festival. Thank you in advance for all your time, love and support of our church. Page 4 THE ARCHANGEL S CALL - March 2018 Äόξα τω Θεώ Πάντων Ένεκεν Glory to God for All Αδέλφια μου! Αθανάσιος Νένες My beloved! Already we are in the journey of Great Lent and during the Sundays of this journey, the church highlights the symbols and images of our Saints. Symbols, such as our holy icons and the Holy Cross, and saints, such as St. Gregory Palamas, St. John writer of the Ladder, St. Mary of Egypt. The reason for this is that church wants to inspire, strengthen and empower us more during this Journey of Great Lent. Using the spiritual tools of fasting, praying, alms giving and also participating more in the sacramental life of our church, we eagerly prepare ourselves for this journey with the final destination of Holy Week to experience His passion, Crucifixion, death and Resurrection! May our God give strength from above, to you and your families Your parish priest, Fr. Athanasios Nenes My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We once again find ourselves in the midst of Great Lent. We inaugurated our Lenten journey by approaching one another (perhaps in anticipation, or with anxiety) and asking one another for forgiveness. Having made this courageous step to ask one another for forgiveness, we turn to God on Clean Monday and ask Him for His comfort and guidance. During Great Compline on Clean Monday we chanted, "Lord of the Powers, be with us; for no other helper do we have in tribulations, but You. Lord of the Powers, have mercy on us." The period of Lent can certainly be a time of tribulations as we find ourselves revived and shaken up by this time of repentance. Yet, as we grapple with these challenges, we also find hope and strength in Christ who overcame the world. In the coming month, in addition to our expanded liturgical schedule, we also have many events and activities to look forward to including our parish s St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival, Lenten activities for our youth, and even the Ordination of Mr. Fotios Papiris to the Holy Diaconate by the descent of the Holy Spirit and the laying on of hands by His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios. May God strengthen all of us for this coming Lenten journey! Ιn Christ's service and yours, Fr. Page 8 THE ARCHANGEL S CALL - March 2018 St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival Introduced in 1983, the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival provides Greek Orthodox teenagers the opportunity to write and talk about their faith. This is a great opportunity for our youth and young people to practice sharing and speaking about their Faith. The Oratorical Festival Program begins at the parish level and is divided into three divisions: Elementary Division (parish level only) for students in grades 4 6 Junior Division for students in grades 7 9 Senior Division for student in grades 10 12 Our parish festival will take place on Annunciation Sunday, March 25 th! The top speakers in the Junior and Senior Divisions advance to the district level. Two finalists in each district division represent the district at the Metropolis Oratorical Festival. The top speaker in each metropolis division is then selected to participate in the Archdiocese Finals, which is hosted by a different metropolis each year. All 18 finalists at the Archdiocese Finals participate in a weekend of activities, the highlight of which is the delivery of their speeches on Saturday morning. The Oratorical Festival Scholarship Fund provides college scholarships to the top speakers. Currently, the top three speakers of each division receive college scholarships of $2,000, $1,500 and $1,000. This year, each Honorable Mention speaker was awarded $500. Junior Division (Grades 7 9) In John 15:13 15, Jesus teaches about friendship to His disciples. Discuss the importance of friendship in your life. Choose a parable from the Gospel of Luke and discuss how it speaks to our contemporary life. Talk about a time and circumstance when you were in awe and wonder where you sensed the majesty of God. Discuss how prayer, fasting, serving others, or study of Orthodoxy assists you with your relationship with Christ and the Church. In Mark 2:1 12, four men remove a roof in order to bring a paralytic to Jesus to be healed. How inventive are we in bringing people to Jesus for healing? 2018 St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival Topics Senior Division (Grades 10 12) People often say, It felt right in order to explain their decisions. How many of our decisions factor in not only our feelings but also the will and commandments of God? Christ s disciples made the commitment to follow Him without knowing what the outcome might be. What does it mean to follow Christ today? How can we have religious conversations on social media in an age of trolling? Christ said, He who has ears to hear, let him hear (Mark 4:9). The Lord said this with reference to the way we hear the word of God. What is our response? Our lives are saturated with violence, not only in terms of the proliferation of war and terrorism but even as entertainment through movies and video games. In such an environment, how can a Christian cultivate virtues that lead to empathy, peacemaking, and self-sacrifice? For more information contact Costa Karageorgis and Fr. Nicholas Mueller! THE ARCHANGEL S CALL - March 2018 Page Page 12 THE ARCHANGEL S CALL - March 2018 Philoptochos Chapter of the Good Samaritan Member of the National Ladies Philoptochos Society On February 12 we hosted a high tea to welcome Presbytera Dena Mueller. It was a beautiful reception, well attended and enjoyed by all. It was heartwarming to see the women of our community come together for such a beautiful event. I wish to take this opportunity to thank the ladies who set up the beautifully decorated room and baked all the delicious pastries. The tea was well received and it has come to my attention that more events of this type would be appreciated. As we begin our journey of Holy Lent, let us reflect on this season of spiritual rebirth, a season of new beginnings, an opportunity for self-reflection and an opportunity to reflect on the charitable goals of our ministry. Taxiarchae and Philoptochos will be the hosts of the Interparish Lenten Supper following the Pre-Sanctified Liturgy on Wednesday, March 14, at 6 PM. All are invited to join in prayer and an informative discussion over a Lenten dinner. Please join us and bring a pot luck Lenten meal or appetizer. Look in your Philoptochos cookbook for ideas for Lenten recipes. We are also looking forward to our annual Palm Sunday bake sale. This is the biggest fundraiser of the year. We need bakers and clients. All baked goods are either home made with the best ingredients, or baked on the premises under a watchful eye and in a sterile environment. We offer tsourekia, kourabiethes, koulourakia, baklava, kataife, galatoboureko, karithopeta, and red eggs. We will be taking special orders and requests. Look for our menu at coffee hour. Page 14 THE ARCHANGEL S CALL - March 2018 American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association HARRIS J BOORAS CHAPTER #406 At our Feb. 15, 2018 meeting we held an Initiation ritual for Mr. Christos Demis of Watertown, who joined our Chapter #A406 and became the fifth new Brother to join us so far. We congratulate and welcome Br. Christos and our new Brothers who recently joined our AHEPA fraternity! More applications are on file of candidates who indicated their wish to join us. All in our community are welcomed to join AHEPA. AHEPA is the official Representative of Greek Americans in the US Congress that promotes and lobbies for the survival of Greece and the Greek values and ideals! We always welcome new members with new innovative ideas to sustain/expand our chapter and continue our work after our Centennial (July 26, 2022), for the next 100 years! Submit a Membership Application now! For fast action/details call John Abate at 617.797.9499 or 617.484.5946) or e-mail: john.abate2 @verizon.net Unfortunately, the month of February brought great sadness this year. We lost our beloved Br. Peter Therios, who passed away on February 1. Peter was a 53-year Life Member of our chapter. Other members of our AHEPA family also lost loved ones. For this reason, we decided to cancel our Apokreatiko Glendi. In 2018 we will continue to offer the E. Metaxas, or A. Vulgaropulos Scholarship award to both the AHEPA and Taxiarchae members eligible college-bound and collegeattending students at our local level, and just for AHEPA members there are Scholarships (for higher amounts up to $3000) at the District 8 level (application forms are now available.) For both types of Scholarships call Pres. John Abate. Just on that thought, it makes sense to join AHEPA. With the start of the new AHEPA calendar year we urge all to send their 2018 Membership Dues. According to HQ, members must have paid their dues by February 28 in order to receive full benefits, such as receive publications, be able to vote, and eligibility rights to scholarships, etc. Do not delay! In addition, as an incentive, our chapter will hold a drawing for all who have paid by February 28, the winner of which will be reimbursed his 2018 dues! As we approach our Centennial in 2022 let us and all in the Taxiarchae community show we support the noble works of AHEPA! Tavli is on Fridays at the Atrium or alternate location 11 AM to 1 PM.
