VETERANS DAY 2014 A MESSAGE TO THE CATHEDRAL FAMILY ABOUT VETERANS DAY In the USA, November 11 of each year is celebrated as Veterans Day. A day of historic and patriotic significance. Veterans Day originally was known as Armistice Day to honor those citizens, who defended our country and the cause of freedom during World War I. In 1958, it was officially renamed Veterans Day when (then) President Dwight Eisenhower signed a law that declared Veterans Day to be a day when veterans of all wars are honored. Currently, six members of the Cathedral family are serving on active duty. Our community sent greetings to each of these men, expressing our appreciation for their noble commitment to our country. Today, Sunday, November 9, 2014, Father George will recognize them after Divine Liturgy, extending our love and respect to each. We pray that our commemoration will help preserve the historical significance of Veterans Day and encourage our service men to stay their course as they continue to serve and support our Nation and the cause of freedom. God bless America! ANGEL TREE Once again, the Philoptochos Society is accepting donations for Angel Tree, a project benefiting special families within our Cathedral Community. Holy Trinity PTA, Hope and Joy, and GOYA also participate by decorating the tree and making the ornaments. Please stop by, select an ornament, and fulfill someone's Christmas wish. Ornaments may be picked up in the Coffee Room on Sunday December 7 and 14. All gifts are due back on December 21. Contact Diana Peterson at dnmpeterson@gmail with any questions.

NEW CATHEDRAL DIRECTORY Many changes have occurred since the last Holy Trinity Cathedral parish directory was published in 2009. It is definitely time to update the contact information for members of the community. For this reason, Lifetouch was engaged to take photographs of Holy Trinity parishioners and to compile a directory with the information that will be gathered during the coming month. Photography sessions will be scheduled in the Hellenic Cultural Center on the following days: Thursday, November 20-2:00 pm to 8:30 pm Friday, November 21-2:00 pm to 8:30 pm Saturday, November 22-10:00 am to 5:00 pm Individuals/families, who have their pictures taken, will receive a FREE 8 x 10 and a FREE directory. There is no charge for the session, and no purchase is required. However, the option to buy packages or photographs a la carte will be available. Individuals/families not participating in this endeavor will NOT receive a directory. Please take time to participate in this project by making an appointment for a photography session. A sign up table is available on Sundays in the Coffee Room. If you can assist with taking appointments after services, please see Vickie Catsulis. ARCHANGEL MICHAEL AWARDS Demetrios Pappas and Gail Psilos were the 2014 Holy Trinity Cathedral recipients for the 17 th Annual Archangel Michael Feast and Honors held yesterday in Atlanta, Georgia. Congratulations are extended to both extremely worthy honorees. Message from Father George On the back cover of this bulletin we are reminded of the Gospel verse: John 13:34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. The Orthodox Study Bible note on this verse suggests that many religions and philosophies teach people this concept, but what makes this commandment new is the measure required of our love: we must love as Christ has loved us, laying down His life not only for his friends but even for His enemies. Would you lay your life down for your friend? Would you give him your second coat? Would you share your dinner table with him? Would you give him the cash in your wallet? Would you offer your neighbor even a kind word? We often see love on our terms, but this Gospel passage encourages us to see love from the perspective of the creator of love: God. God is love, and His love is unconditional. If we are to be His disciples, we must take on this nature of God, this nature of love unconditional to all who come into our lives. This is the new commandment that God has given to His followers. It is not an option but a commandment and one that we can embrace because we have received that love! For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believes in Him will be saved. 150 TH COMMEMORATIVE DVD AND COIN The 150 th Anniversary DVD documentary ($20) and the commemorative coin ($15) can be ordered from the 150 th Anniversary Committee. Resurrectional Apolytikion Plagal Tone 1 Let us worship the Word who is unoriginate with the Father and the Spirit, and from a Virgin was born for our salvation, O believers, and let us sing His praise. For in His goodness He was pleased to ascend the Cross in the flesh, and to undergo death, and to raise up those who had died, by His glorious Resurrection. Apolytikion of St. Nektarios Tone 1 The offspring of Selyvria and the guardian of Aegina, the true friend of virtue who didst appear in the last years, O Nectarius, we faithful honour thee as a godly servant of Christ, for thou pourest forth healings of every kind for those who piously cry out: Glory to Christ Who hath glorified thee. Glory to Him Who hath made thee wondrous. Glory to Him Who worketh healings for all through thee. Apolytikion of the Holy Trinity Plagal Tone 4 Blessed are You, O Christ our God, who made fishermen all-wise, sending upon them the Holy Spirit and, through them, netting the world. O Loving One, glory to You. Kontakion Tone 4 Today, the most pure temple of the Savior, the precious bridal chamber and Virgin, the sacred treasure of God, enters the house of the Lord, bringing the grace of the Divine Spirit. The Angels of God praise her. She is the heavenly tabernacle.
THE EPISTLE Galatians 6:11-18 BRETHREN, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen. THE GOSPEL Luke 8:41-56 At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.
