On behalf of the Ladies of the Philopchos: MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone. Toula Egarhos * The saints, during their earthly life, are filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit. After their departure the same grace remains in their souls as in their bodies. The very same grace is present and active in their sacred images and icons (St. John of Damascus). It is the practice of the Church venerate, not worship icons. The Orthodox Church calls for the elaborate use of symbolism and iconography in the interior decoration of the church building. Icons are not simply portraits representing people, but graphic presentations of spiritual truths that are visual aids contemplation and prayer. When we venerate icons the honor is directed Christ or the Saint depicted on the icon, not the wood, paint, or colors of the icon. In the Orthodox Church the icons bear witness the reality of God s presence with us in the mystery of faith. We are look beyond the external and deep in the spiritual meaning of living the Christian life. Icons are the witnesses of the presence of the Kingdom of God us, and so our own presence the Kingdom of God in the Church. It is in the Orthodox Christian Faith that icons are not only permissible, but are spiritually necessary because "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us" (John 1:14). Christ is truly man and, as man, truly the "icon of the invisible God" (Col. 1:15, 1 Cor. 11:7, 2 Cor. 4:4). We make the sign of the Cross as a public profession of our Orthodox Christian faith. The first two fingers and thumb of the right hand come gether symbolizing the Holy Trinity. The two remaining fingers symbolize the Humanity and Divinity of Jesus Christ. Therefore, in our right hand, we hold the two major doctrines of our Christian Orthodox Church each time we make the sign of the Cross. We make the sign of the Cross before we eat, sleep, drive, pass by, enter or leave the church, travel or begin any major endeavor, acknowledging our desire include God in these activities. In church, make the sign of the Cross: 1. When you venerate the icons 2. When you light a candle 3. If you are an Altar Boy when you enter the Holy Altar and when you pass behind the Altar 4. When you hear Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us, the Theokos, Peace be all 5. At the end of the Gospel reading 6. During the Creed when we say Articles 8 and 9: And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life and In one holy, catholic, and aposlic Church 7. Feast of the Three Hierarchs and Greek Letters Day + Demetrios Archbishop of America Ἑορτή τῶν Τριῶν Ἱεραρχῶν καί Ἡμέρα Ἑλληνικῶν Γραμμάτων ὁ Ἀρχιεπίσκοπος Ἀμερικῆς Δημήτριος The Feast of the Three Hierarchs, Saint Basil the Great, Saint Gregory the Theologian and Saint John Chrysosm, on January 30th, is celebrated in conjunction with the Greek Letters Day as the Church recognizes in them the superb combination of Hellenic language and culture with Orthodox Faith and life. The Three Hierarchs lived in the 4 th century Byzantium, a time when the Church, after the edict of Mediolanum in 312, was free express her faith in multiple ways. It was within this context that the Three Hierarchs produced their great works in the fields of theology, philosophy, rheric and education, superbly using and even enhancing the Greek language. When we examine the work of Saint Basil the Great, we immediately can see that he was a person of extraordinary education in all scientific fields, a giant in theology and a master of the Greek language. He recognized the tremendous importance of a solid classical education as a facr in the cultivation of one s intellect and exposure cultural and educational values. His famous Address Young Men On How They Might Profit From Greek Writings, remains an irreplaceable guide of how deal with and how maximize the spiritual profit from the study of classical Greek literature. Saint Gregory the Theologian also has been a superb example of a master of an amazing Greek education. In his extensive theological and poetic works, we encounter an unprecedented usage of the Greek Language. He was so proficient in the various forms of Greek language that he even was able create new words in order express more accurately Orthodox theology, thus earning him the title, Theologian. Likewise, it is no coincidence that the Church honored Saint John Chrysosm with the title Golden-Mouth on account of his brilliant rheric and the extraordinary way in which he employed the Greek language. Saint John Chrysosm, with the thousands of pages of exegesis on the Holy Scriptures, is still as contemporary day as he was in the 4 th century. His biblical exegesis as well as his many sermons, are indicative of the tremendous effort of Chrysosm promote real and substantive education among his people. Looking at the example of these Three Pillars of Orthodoxy we begin understand the great value of Hellenic education and furthermore its importance in our lives. These Ecumenical Fathers and Teachers not only beautified the Church with their passionate pasral care and sanctity, but also enhanced Greek language, theology, philosophy, rheric and poetry, as they focused on the message of the Gospel, the teachings of the Church and the centrality of Christ the Lord. We are called embrace this model of superb education and great faith as an expression of our deep love, commitment, and understanding of God s divine word. The combination of the Feast of the Three Hierarchs with the Greek Letters Day constitutes a challenge for us contemporary Greek Orthodox people: A challenge honor our Orthodox Faith and our Hellenic language and culture in the most advanced and strong ways. And God, the source of wisdom and love, the God of the Three Hierarchs will certainly be with us in successfully responding the challenge.
