Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Reverend Father Dean J. Dimon Proistamenos 2187 West 14th Street, Cleveland, OH 44113 216-861-0116 March 25, 2018 Annunciation Feast of the Annunciation of Our Most Holy Theotokos The Feast of the Annunciation of Our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary is celebrated on March 25 each year. The Feast commemorates the announcement by the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Son of God, would become incarnate and enter into this world through her womb. The biblical story of the Feast of the Annunciation is found in the first chapter of the Gospel of Luke (1:26-39). The Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary, who was living in Nazareth, and said to her, Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you. Mary was perplexed and wondered what kind of greeting this was. The angel told her not to be afraid, for she had found favor with God. He said, You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there will be no end. Mary responded to the angel by asking how this could happen since she had no husband. The angel told her that the Holy Spirit and the power of God would come upon her, and that the child to be born of her would be called holy, the Son of God. The angel then proceeded to tell the Virgin Mary that her cousin Elizabeth had conceived a son in her old age (John the Baptist), and affirmed that with God nothing is impossible. In faith and obedience to the will of God, Mary replied to the angel, Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be according to your word. Upon her response, the angel departed. It is on the Feast of the Annunciation, that Orthodox Christians commemorate both the divine initiative of God, whereby He took on flesh from the Virgin for our salvation, and the human response, whereby Mary freely accepted the vocation offered to her. He elected to become man, and He desired to do this with the willing agreement of her whom He chose as His mother. Mary could have refused, for she was not a passive instrument, but an active participant with a free and positive part to play in God s plan for our salvation. Thus, when on this and other feasts the Orthodox Church honors the Theotokos, the Mother of God, it is not just because God chose her but also because she herself chose to follow His will. Epistle St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 2:11-18 Prokeimenon. Mode 3. Luke 1: 46-48 My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God m y S a v i o r. Verse: For he has regarded the humility of his servant. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 2:11-18 BRETHREN, he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified have all one origin. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying, "I will proclaim thy name to my brethren, in the midst of the congregation I will praise thee." And again, "I will put my trust in him." And again, "Here am I, and the children God has given me. Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage. For surely it is not with angels that he is concerned but with the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brethren in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make expiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered and been tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted. Gospel The Gospel According to Luke 1:24-38 In those days, Elizabeth the wife of Zacharias conceived and for five months she hid herself, saying, "Thus the Lord had done to me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men." In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you! Blessed are you among women!" But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end." And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible." And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her. 2

Apolytikion of the Feast To-day is the crown of our Salvation and the manifestation of the Eternal Mystery. The Son of God becometh the son of the Virgin, and Gabriel announceth the good tidings of grace. Wherefore let us also with him cry to the Mother of God: Hail! Thou that art full of grace; the Lord is with thee. With the stone sealed by Judeans, and the soldiers guarding your undefiled body, you rose, O Savior, the third day, to all the world granting life. For this reason, the heavenly powers cried to you, the giver of life: glory to your resurrection, O Christ, glory to your kingdom, glory to you dispensation, O only true friend of man. Your city sings to you a song of victory, and offers thanks to its defender and deliverer, for having spear it from trials, O Theotokos. But because you have the power invincible, from a multitude of dangers liberate us; that we may cry to you: Hail bride who knew no bridegroom. 4

Orthodox Christian Stewardship is a way of life, which acknowledges accountability, reverence, and responsibility before God. A primary goal of Stewardship is to promote spiritual growth and strengthen faith. Becoming a Steward begins when we believe in God, to whom we give our love, loyalty and trust and act on those beliefs. As Stewards, we affirm that every aspect of our lives comes as a gift from Him. Stewardship calls on the faithful to cheerfully offer back to God a portion of the gifts with which they have been blessed. You can pay your stewardship contributions with a credit card payment. It is the practice of our Church to give the name of a Saint to the new born child. By assuming the name of a Saint, we not only honor and express our gratitude to a Holy Person for his exceptional contribution to the Orthodox Faith, but provide the new Christian with an example worthy of emulation. The Saint then becomes the Patron of the child protecting it from all danger. A DAILY LENTEN PRAYER The Prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian Lord and Master of my life, Take from me the spirit of laziness, idle curiosity, vain talk and lust for power. Give me instead a spirit of chastity, humility, patience and love. Yes Lord and King, help me to see my own faults, and keep me from judging what others do. You are blessed unto the ages of ages. Amen. Ἀμήν Let my prayer rise as Incense, before You... And the lifting up of my hands, as an evening sacrifice. Lenten Pre-Sanctified Liturgy Wednesday, March 28th at 6:00 p.m. Lenten Pre-Sanctified Liturgy. All are invited to join in prayer as we continue our journey of Great and Holy Lent. Fasting & Health It is puzzling why fasting has fallen into disrepute, says Dr. Claude Miller, a New York psychiatrist who specializes in weight problems. From a medical point of view, fasting can be very beneficial. Not only from the weight loss aspect, but spiritually and psychologically. Of course, few people can endure a total fast - not eating anything and drinking only water - or even a near total fast. This total fasting incidentally, like that of the saints, produces in the terminology of our times, a natural high. In the initiation rites of some Indian tribes, the young braves used to fast to the point of euphoria and ex-panded consciousness. But the average person who is five to ten pounds overweight and wants to lose it fast can benefit by a far less ascetic fast. The Lenten season is a traditional time of fast-ing for Christians all over the world. A practical and effective fasting diet could be to eat one meal a day, or to limit your intake to 1000 calories per day. The bene-fits of fasting are many. It is good for your digestive system. It helps to lower your blood pressure. It can create an aliveness when you stop using food as a tranquilizer. Dr. Miller says contemporary Americans have tried to actualize the myth every day is a happy day and every hour a happy one. This is absurd for without contrast, life de-teriorates into a pattern of boredom. Fast-ing is good for the body and the soul. 20

And, if you simply love to sing the beautiful hymns of our church, then you are already one of us! If you are thinking of joining the choir, then this is the best time to do so in time to sing the beautiful hymns of Lent, Holy Week and Pascha. To a new singer though, the thought of singing with us may seem like a daunting task, particularly if you are unable to read music. Learning to sing with others is a skill that makes the experience all the more rewarding. While the ability to read music is helpful, it is not required we will teach you everything you need to know. And you will learn more about your faith through the hymns that we chant. Some Things to Remember: Choir contributes to the understanding of God and the experience of our faith Choir gives us the opportunity to be worship leaders Choir fulfills the Biblical admonishment to sing to our God. Choir focuses on DOING rather than OBSERVING Choir allows praise with body, mind, spirit, and voice Choir is a gift that will last a lifetime. 21
