Sunday, October 19, 2014 Hymns Following the Gospel (Small Entrance) Apolytikion When You descended unto death, O Lord who yourself are immortal Life, then did You mortify Hades by the lightning flash of Your Divinity. Also when You raised the dead from the netherworld, all the Powers of the heavens were crying out: O Giver of life, Christ our God, glory be to You. St. Vasilios Your message was carried throughout the world. As it received your mighty word, By which you divinely made manifest And clarified the nature of existing things You set in order the customs of men, You who are royal priesthood! Holy Father, intercede with Christ our God To grant us His great mercy. Kontakion O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.
On Sunday, November 9, 2014 the St. Val s Men s Club will be sponsoring a memorial service in the church at the end of the Divine Liturgy in memory of all of their departed members. After the Divine Liturgy all members of the community are invited to go outside and join the Honor Guard honoring the memories of the veterans that have served our country and have entered into eternal rest. Prokeimenon. Mode 2. Psalm 117.14,18 The Lord is my strength and my song. Verse: The Lord has chastened me sorely. St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians 11:31-33; 12:1-9 BRETHREN, the God and Father of the Lord Jesus, he who is blessed for ever, knows that I do not lie. At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas guarded the city of Damascus in order to seize me, but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped his hands. I must boast; there is nothing to be gained by it, but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven-whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into Paradise-whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows-and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. Though if I wish to boast, I shall not be a fool, for I shall be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. And to keep me from being too elated by the abundance of revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I besought the Lord about this, that it should leave me; but he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. The project, OPERATION HOUSEWARM- ING, involves providing housewarming items to those homeless veterans who are transitioning to independent living. The Philoptochos needs everyone s help. If you have any questions, please call Paula at 781-254-4102 or Maria at 978-531-6832. Sincerely, The Philoptochos Athena The Gospel of Luke 7:11-16 At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!" 12 5

If you wish to add or remove a name from the list, please call the Church Office. CEMETERY VISITS: Due to the number of sacraments, 40 day blessings and memorials on Sundays it is difficult to make cemetery visits on Sundays after liturgy. If you would like a Trisagion at the graveside during the week you are kindly asked to make an appointment by calling the church office. HOSPITAL VISITS Due to HIPPA privacy rules, hospitals no longer provide a list of Orthodox patients to us. Therefore, if you or a loved one are, or will be, in the hospital, please contact the church office for a pastoral visit. Also, please notify the office if a friend or family member is in a rehab center, nursing home, assisted living facility or under hospice care. WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS! Everyone is welcome in the Orthodox Church and may receive the blessed bread (antidoron) at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. Sadly, the divisions in the church prompt us all to work towards reunited Christianity. The culmination of this reunion will be the ability of all Christians to receive the Eucharist together. Until that blessed day arrives, only Orthodox Christians who are in good sacramental order are permitted to receive Holy Communion in the Orthodox Church. If you have any questions or concerns please speak with Father Chris. A Call for Parish Council Members St. Vasilios Church needs dedicated men and women who place their love for Christ and the needs of the Parish as key priorities in their lives. A healthy spiritual life should be the norm not just of Council Members, but of all Orthodox Christians. By fully realizing the importance of the service offered by members of the Parish Council, official representatives of St. Vasilios, a person assumes a position that demands love, fidelity and dedication to the Holy Orthodox Church and will make every effort to exemplify its sacred character and spirit. If you share these priorities, it is the church s hope and prayer that you would submit your name as a candidate for the Parish Council no later than Friday, November 7, 2014. Elections will be held on Sunday December 14, 2014. If you are willing to be a candidate for election to the Parish Council, you must attend a Parish Council Candidate Seminar, to be held at St Vasilios at a time convenient to the candidates. This year we are also asking for a High School Student to join the Council as a non-voting Youth Representative to assist in addressing the needs of the youth of St Vasilios. They will not be required to attend the Candidate Seminar, but are encouraged to do so. The Youth Rep will be asked to attend monthly Parish Council Meetings and Committee meetings of his or her choosing. This is a great opportunity to participate in the governance of your church and also earn community service. Please complete the form below and check Youth. If multiple names are submitted one person will be selected at random. For more information regarding the Parish Council, please contact George Papadopoulos at 978-740-2991, Fr. Chris or Parish Council President Pam Katsiris at 978-531-0777. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - St. Vasilios Parish Council Nomination Form I would like to volunteer for service as a member of the St. Vasilios Parish Council: Name: YOUTH Address: Tel: Email: I certify that I have been a member in good standing for more than one year and am eligible to serve on the Parish Council.
