EDUCATION, CULTURAL, AND YOUTH MINISTRIES COMMITTEE The next committee meeting will be Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at 7:00 pm. All members are asked to attend. Saint Demetrius Saint Demetrius was a Thessalonian, a most pious son of pious and noble parents and a teacher of the Christian faith. When Maximian first came to Thessalonica in 290, he raised the Saint to the rank of Duke of Thessaly. But, when it was discovered that the Saint was a Christian, Demetrius was arrested and kept bound in a bathhouse. While the games were under way in the city, Maximian, a spectator, had a barbarian friend named Lyaeus, who was a notable wrestler. Lyaeus was haughty because of the height and strength of his body and boasted in the stadium, challenging the citizens to contest him. But, all who fought with him were defeated. Seeing this, a youth named Nestor, an acquaintance of Demetrius, came to the Saint in the bathhouse and asked his blessing to fight Lyaeus single-handed. Receiving this blessing and sealing himself with the sign of the Cross, he presented himself in the stadium and said, "O God of Demetrius, help me!" and straightway he engaged Lyaeus in combat and smote him with a mortal blow to the heart, leaving the former boaster lifeless upon the earth. Maximian was sorely grieved over this, and when he learned who was the cause of this defeat, he commanded straightway that Demetrius be slain. The Saint was pierced with lances while he was yet in the bathhouse. And, as for Nestor, Maximian commanded that he be slain with his own sword.

ARTOCLASIA AND RECEPTION This year Philoptochos Sunday will be celebrated on November 10 and will commemorate the Holy Feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian, the patron saints of Philoptochos. On that day a special tray will be passed to support the National Ladies Philoptochos Ecumenical Patriarchate Fund, a ministry that is a tangible expression of our love. In supporting this important fund, you will help bring both material and spiritual comfort to the lives of our brothers and sisters in Christ, who know Constantinople as their home. SENIOR CITIZENS LUNCHEON Our next Senior Citizens Luncheon will be Thursday, November 14, 2013, and will be sponsored by Athena Kontaxis in memory of her parents Mersini (Mary) and George Kontaxis. GREEK PASTRY SALE Baklava, finikia, and koulouria, as well as assorted gift boxes with baklava, finikia, and kourabiedes, can be ordered from the Daughters of Penelope Bake Sale. Funds raised support the many charitable and educational projects of the Daughters of Penelope. GOYA WINTER YOUTH RALLY It s not too early to make plans for the annual Winter Youth Rally, which will take place in Atlanta, Georgia, December 27-December 30. All youth between the ages of 12 to 18 are invited to participate and attend the rally. This year s theme is "Know Thyself," taken from the Gospel of Mark 9:24. THE EPISTLE II Corinthians 9:6-11 BRETHREN, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work. As it is written, "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever." He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your resources and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for great generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. THE GOSPEL Luke 8:41-56 At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus' feet he besought him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. As he went, the people pressed round him. And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and had spent all her living upon physicians and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind him, and touched the fringe of his garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, "Who was it that touched me?" When all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!" But Jesus said, "Some one touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me." And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace." While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more." But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well." And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise." And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.
