THE EPISTLE Galatians 6:11-18 O Lord, save Your people, and bless Your inheritance. To You, O Lord, I cry; O my God. BRETHREN, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and not only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. It is placed at the central chair of the Holy Altar inside the main church (Katholikon) of the Monastery. According to tradition Arcadius, the young son of Theodosios the Great, Emperor of Rome, was involved in a ship wreck. Under miraculous circumstances he washed to shore and ended up under a bush, where he found this icon. The site later became the location of the Monastery of Vatopedi, and hence the name of the Monastery. The Greek word for bush is vatos, and the Greek word for child is pedi, vato pedi or in Greek - Βατοπαιδιου. The icon, which was placed in the Holy Altar of the Monastery when it was built, also received the name Ktitorissa (the establisher) from this miracle. The best known miracle of this holy icon is as follows. When Arab pirates decided to loot the Monastery, a common practice in the 10th century, the Hierodeacon Savvas was the Vimataris (person responsible for the Holy Altar) of the main church. He managed to place the icon in the well of the Holy Altar, together with the cross of Konstantine the Great, and lit the lantern that was always placed before the icon. He did not manage to save himself though; he was caught by the pirates and was sold as a prisoner on the island of Crete. Seventy years later, when Crete was liberated by the Emperor Nikiforos Fokas, Hierodeacon Savvas was also freed and immediately returned to his Monastery. Upon his return he led the then Abbot of the Monastery Nicholas to the well inside the Holy Altar and instructed him to open it. It was a miracle! The icon and the cross were found floating on the surface of the water, and the lantern was still lit before the icon, even though it was lit seventy years prior. The icon also receives the name Vimatarissa because of where it was placed for seventy years. Ever since this occurrence, a Paraklesis service to Panagia is chanted before the icon every Monday afternoon, and the Holy Liturgy is conducted in the main church every Tuesday, apart from Sundays and major feasts, of course. And, all processions conducted at the Monastery always have the holy icon of Panagia Vimatarissa, or Ktitorissa, first in line of the procession.
