A Genocide which we cannot afford to forget (19th of May) According to figures compiled by the Greek Patriarchate in Constantinople by 1918 257,019 Greeks from the Pontus region of Asia Minor had been deported to the Interior. At the end of 1921 some Greek sources placed the Pontus death toll at 303,238. In 1922 the Central Council of Pontus stated: "Since the year 1914 the Ottoman Government, on the lines of a plan organized and premeditated has caused more than 1,500,000 Greeks and Armenians of Asia Minor to be massacred by its local agents. The unfortunate Greek populations of Pontus have been decimated by murder and privation, have witnessed their churches profaned, their daughters violated, their wives dishonored, babies snatched from the arms of their mothers and hurled against the walls, old men and children burned within the churches and priests massacred under the portals." There were times when the Greeks of Pontus took up arms in an act of self defense to resist the massacres being perpetrated against them. In this respect Pontus makes an interesting case study of the Greek Genocide, much like the resistance demonstrated at Van by Armenians during the Armenian Genocide. Only 182,169 Greeks of Pontus were ever recorded as having reached Greece. In 1925 George K. Balabanis wrote: "... the total human loss of Pontians from the [beginning] of the General [Great] War until March 1924 can be estimated at three hundred and fifty three thousand [353,000] [persons], murdered, hanged and dead through punishment, illness and privations." However, if one gives careful consideration to the various estimates for the region's prewar population and the migration of Pontians into both Russian territory and Greece, it is clear that Pontian deaths are unlikely to have ever reached such a figure. A more reasonable estimate might be 250,000 which indicates that approximately 50% of the total population was killed. Page 1
Η Μάχη της Κρήτης Ως μάχη της Κρήτης έχει επικρατήσει να ονομάζεται η εισβολή των γερμανικών στρατευμάτων στη Κρήτη και η κατάληψη της, κατά τον δεύτερο παγκόσμιο πόλεμο. Η μάχη της Κρήτης αποτέλεσε ένα σπουδαίο πολεμικό γεγονός και κράτησε 11 μέρες από τις 20-31 Μαίου του 1941. Στους Γερμανούς εισβολείς εκτός από τις Ελληνικές και συμμαχικές στρατιωτικές δυνάμεις (βρετανοί, Νεοζηλανδοί, Αυστραλοί) αντιστάθηκαν με ότι μέσο διέθεταν οι κάτοικοι της Κρήτης. Αυτή η αντίσταση των κατοίκων είναι από μόνη της ξεχωριστή για τα στρατιωτικά δεδομένα και μπορεί να συγκριθεί μόνο με την εποποιία του Στάλινγκράντ. Το σχέδιο που οργάνωσε το Γερμανικό επιτελείο για την κατάληψη της Κρήτης είχε το κωδικό όνομα Merkur (Ερμής) και ήταν ένα προχωρημένο για την εποχή σχέδιο καθώς στηρίζονταν στην χρησιμοποίηση ενός επίλεκτου σώματος 14.000 αλεξιπτωτιστών σαν πρώτη δύναμη κρούσης, με επικεφαλής τον αντιπτέραρχο Στούντεντ αλλά και δυνάμεων τεθωρακισμένων και πεζικού που μεταφέρθηκαν στο νησί με μεταγωγικά αεροπλάνα. Γενικός διοικητής των συμμαχικών δυνάμεων είχε οριστεί ο Νεοζηλανδός Στρατηγός Φράιμπεργκ. Πριν από την επιχείρηση της κατάληψης, η γερμανική αεροπορία είχε εξαπολήσει μεγάλης κλίμακας βομβαρδισμούς των κρητικών πόλεων και των στρατηγικών σημείων του νησιού. Η επιχείρηση της κατάληψης ξεκίνησε το πρωί της 20ης Μαΐου 1941. Η βασική επιδίωξη των επιτιθέμενων ήταν η κατάληψη των αεροδρομίων του νησιού και η δημιουργία προγεφυρωμάτων για την μεταφορά μεγαλύτερου όγκου στρατευμάτων και εξοπλισμού. Αυτό που έγινε από την πρώτη στιγμή που φάνηκε ο πρώτος Γερμανός αλεξιπτωτιστής στο κρητικό ουρανό είναι απίστευτο. Οι κρητικοί χωρίς να υπάρχει κανένα οργανωμένο σχέδιο που να τους συμπεριλαμβάνει στον αμυντικό σχεδιασμό και σχεδόν άοπλοι, αυθόρμητα, όπως έκαναν για αιώνες απέναντι στον οποιοδήποτε κατακτητή, ξεκινούν μια πεισματική άμυνα με αποτέλεσμα από το πρώτο κύμα των 3000 αλεξιπτωτιστών να μη μπορέσουν να φτάσουν στους αντικειμενικούς στόχους τους παρά ελάχιστοι. Οι επιτιθέμενοι καταφέρνουν να κερδίζουν κάθε βήμα με σφοδρές μάχες και τεράστιες απώλειες. Στις 27 Μαΐου καταλαμβάνονται τα Χανιά και οι συμμαχικές δυνάμεις αποφασίζουν να εγκαταλείψουν το νησί. Μια αποχώρηση που ολοκληρώθηκε από τις 28 Μαΐου - 1 Ιούνιου χάρη και στη βοήθεια των κατοίκων που συνέχισαν τη πεισματική άμυνα και προσέφεραν κάθε δυνατή βοήθεια στα συμμαχικά στρατεύματα κατά την αποχώρηση τους από το νησί. Η Μάχη της Κρήτης τελείωσε ουσιαστικά στις 31 Μαίου. Οι γερμανοί αναγκάστηκαν να δώσουν πολύνεκρες μάχες με τους υπερασπιστές της Κρήτης πράγμα που τους κόστισε 15000 νεκρούς από τα πιο επίλεκτα στρατιωτικά τους σώματα. Οι Κρητικοί συνέργησαν αποφασιστικά στην εξουδετέρωση των γερμανών αλεξιπτωτιστών την πρώτη μέρα της εισβολής αλλά και σε κάθε επιχείρηση που έκαναν οι γερμανοί για να καταλάβουν οποιοδήποτε τμήμα του νησιού. Η εκδικητική μανία των γερμανών για την αντίσταση που συνάντησαν ξέσπασε σε ομαδικές εκτελέσεις Κρητικών αμέσως μετά την κατάληψη του νησιού. Στην Κρήτη τα γερμανικά στρατεύματα συνάντησαν για πρώτη φορά μια συγκλονιστική λαϊκή αντίσταση, αυτή την αντίσταση που θα συναντούσαν έκτοτε μπροστά τους σε αρκετές από τις ευρωπαϊκές χώρες που θα καταλάμβαναν. Η αντίσταση των Κρητικών ήταν ο προάγγελος της Ελληνικής Εθνικής αντίστασης, αλλά και της Γαλλικής και της αντίστασης των Γιουγκοσλάβων και των Ρώσων. Πάρα πολλοί ιστορικοί αναφέρονται στα λάθη της συμμαχικής ηγεσίας που δεν μπόρεσε να οργανώσει αποτελεσματικότερα την άμυνα της Κρήτης ώστε να αποτελέσει ένα απόρθητο φρούριο, αλλά πιθανά αυτό δεν ήταν στα συμμαχικά επιτελικά σχέδια και απλώς χρησιμοποίησαν την Κρήτη για να καθυστερήσουν μόνο τα γερμανικά στρατεύματα. Η σημασία της Μάχης της Κρήτης ήταν πολύ μεγάλη καθώς εξαιτίας της οι γερμανοί ματαίωσαν τα σχέδια για αντίστοιχη κατάληψη της Κύπρου και της μέσης Ανατολής, αλλά καθυστέρησαν και την εφαρμογή των σχεδίων για την κατάληψη της Σοβιετικής Ένωσης. Οι μεγάλες απώλειες του επίλεκτου σώματος των αλεξιπτωτιστών έπεισαν το γερμανικό επιτελείο ότι δεν έπρεπε να το ξαναχρησιμοποιήσουν σε άλλη μεγάλη επιχείρηση. Από την άλλη μεριά η μάχη της Κρήτης έδειξε ότι η τρομερή πολεμική μηχανή που σάρωνε με μεγάλη ευκολία όλους τους ευρωπαϊκούς στρατούς, τα βρήκε δύσκολα μπροστά σε μερικούς αποφασισμένους Κρητικούς. Χαρακτηριστικά είναι τα παρακάτω αποσπάσματα από ριζίτικα τραγούδια εμπνευσμένα από τη μάχη της Κρήτης. "...Χίτλερ να μην το καυχηστείς πώς πάτησες στην Κρήτη ξαρμάτωτη την ήβρηκες και τα παιδιά τση 'λειπαν στα ξένα πολεμούσανε πάνω στην Αλβανία..." "... Κρήτη μ η Μεραρχία σου, αν ήτανε κοντά σου, το Γερμανό θα ν έθαφτες μέσα στα χώματά σου. Κρήτη μου όμορφο νησί, που γραψες Ιστορία, Δίχως στρατό πολέμησες μιαν αυτοκρατορία! Τση Κρήτης τ Άγια Χώματα, όπου κι ανέν τα σκάψεις, Αίμα παλικαριών θα βρεις, κόκκαλα θα ξεθάψεις..." "...Οι Άγγλοι και οι Αυστραλοί, και Ζηλανδοί ομάδι, αντάμα με τους Έλληνες πηγαίνουνε στον Άδη. Τέτοια ψυχή, τέτοια καρδιά, και λεβεντιά δεν είδα. Η Κρήτη σαν να ήτονε δικήτωνε πατρίδα. After successive meetings, the Germans decide on the occupation of Crete. The transport of Greek and British forces from mainland Greece is scheduled for the second fortnight of April. The Greek government resorts to Crete. MAY 20, 1941 German attack on Crete begins at 6:3O a.m. The Germans subject the towns of Chania, Rethymnon and Heraklion to severe bombardment prior to dropping their elite parachutists. Local confrontations take place between German paratroopers and allied forces reinforced by the local population. MAY 21, 1941 The German concentrate their attack on Maleme airfield. German airfield land at Maleme in the evening carrying significant forces and material for the attack. The British fleet in the Mediterranean strikes a German convoy heading for Crete. Fifteen requisitioned vessels were sunk; their losses are still unknown. APRIL25, 1941 Landing in Crete of the New Zealand allies. APRIL 28, 1941 The Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Tsouderos, chairs a meeting at Chania between the leaders of the Greek forces and British officers. The meeting concluded with the issue of a reinforcement request to strengthen the defense of the island. MAY 22, 1941 The Germans manage to finally occupy the airfield of Maleme. Allied efforts to retake the airfield are fruitless. MAY 23, 1941 Greek political leadership abandons Crete on destroyer "Decoy". Churchill sends the following message to the Headquarters: "The Battle of Crete must be won". MAY 24, 1941 The bombardment of the towns of Crete goes on. At Chania, the Germans gained the initiative. The allied forces at Rethymnon and Heraklion are determined "to fight to the end". APRI1 29, 1941 The commander of the Hew Zealand Division, General Prey Berg, arrives in Crete. MAY 25, 1941 The Germans occupy Kandanos in south-west Crete. The resolute and unexpected resistance of the defenders infuriates the Germans who resort to Brutal reprisals: mass executions, arson, and other serious destruction. MAY 26,1941 Galatas is occupied. Allied forces are desperately trying to defend Chania. Freyberg notes MAY 18-19, 1941 German aircrafts land on airfields of Attica and Northern Greece to prepare for the attack. the dire circumstances the allied forces are in Crete. MAY 27, 1941 The Commander-in-chief of the Middle East, Wayvel, orders the allied forces to evacuate Crete. Tassels of the British fleet take over the mission of safe evacuation of the allies. Chania falls in the hands of the invaders. It was the beginning of the end. Μια ειδική και αξιομνημόνευτη μέρα Μουσικής από την Κληρονομιά μας και την Εκκλησία μας: Την Δευτέρα 7 Ιουνίου 2010, ένα σπουδαίο Κονσέρτο μουσικής από τον Παλιό Κόσμο, την αρχαία Εκκλησία και από τον Νέο Κόσμο στον οποίο ήρθαν οι γονείς μας, με την επωνυμία: Δώρα από τους Γονείς μας Δώρα στους Γονείς μας Αυτό το βράδυ, σε μια όμορφη αίθουσα στο κέντρο της πόλης (είτε στο Town Hall Chamber Concert Hall είτε στην Αγγλικανική Εκκλησία της Αγίας Μαρίας), οι φίλοι σας από την Ενορία της Αγίας Τριάδας καθώς και άλλοι ορθόδοξοι φίλοι, θα παρουσιάσουν ένα αξιομνημόνευτο και εμπνευσμένο κονσέρτο μουσικής από την κληρονομιά μας Δώρα από τους Γονείς μας και της μουσικής που αυτή η κληρονομιά ενέπνευσε τα παιδιά αυτών των μεταναστών να γράψουν και να συνθέσουν Δώρα για τους Γονείς μας. Ο αδελφός μας από το Γουέλινγκτον, Τζον Ψάθας, που είναι ο πιο ονομαστός Νεοζηλανδός συνθέτης και ο οποίος συνέθεσε μεγάλος μέρος από την μουσική κατά την Έναρξη της Ολυμπιάδας του 2004 της Αθήνας, θα είναι ο βασικός συντελεστής, καθώς το περίφημο Νεοζηλανδικό Τρίο θα παρουσιάσει δύο από τα έργα του, και τα δύο εμπνευσμένα από ελληνικά μουσικά θέματα. Τα μέλη της ενορίας μας, τα οποία γνωρίζετε και αγαπάτε, θα είναι επίσης συντελεστές. Είναι ένα βράδυ από το οποίο δεν πρέπει να απουσιάσετε. Παρακαλείσθε να σημειώστε την ημέρα, παρακαλείσθε να κάνετε τα σχέδια σας ώστε να είστε εκεί, και επίσης γνωστοποιείστε το σε όλους τους φίλους σας. Community Notices Greek Picnic There was a good turnout for our picnic this year at Pt Chevalier Beach. The weather was perfect and it was a great family day. Everyone brought their own picnic and the committee organized the games. The three-legged races and the egg and spoon races were particularly entertaining. The tug of war between the sexes was very competitive with the women pulling out all stops to win. Next year will be very interesting! Ελληνικό Πικ-νικ Ήρθε αρκετός κόσμος στο πικ-νικ μας αυτό το χρόνο στην παραλία του Pt Chevalier. Ο καιρός ήτανε καταπληκτικός και ήτανε μία ωραία οικογενειακή ημέρα. Ο καθένας έφερε και το δικό του πικ-νικ για να το μοιραστούμε όλοι μαζί και το συμβούλιο είχε κανονίσει διάφορα παιχνίδια. Οι αγώνες δρόμου, και ο αγώνας δρόμου με τα αυγά και τα κουτάλια ήτανε πολύ καλοί και ο κόσμος το διασκέδασε. Το παιχνίδι με το σχοινί μεταξύ ανδρών και γυναικών ήτανε πολύ ανταγωνιστικό με τις γυναίκες να προσπαθούν να νικήσουν. Του χρόνου θα είναι πολύ ενδιαφέρον! The Greek National day of 25 March The Greek National day of 25 March was celebrated at our Hellenic Community hall on Saturday the 27th March. This was also the celebration of Annunciation (Evangelismos). The event was a bring a plate and BYO occasion. As usual the food was varied, delicious, and plentiful, with a heavy bias on non animal (nistisima) dishes as it happened during lent. This event was very well attended with lots of dancing and breaking plates. We did manage to keep the noise sufficiently down and the noise control police away. We had a fantastic time and we would like to thank everybody who helped for the success of this event. As the Greeks say kai tou xronou. Our feast began with soup, then we had the traditional lambs on the spit together with tiropetas, spanakopitas and a large selection of other lovely food. After this we all enjoyed the koulourakya and other Greek sweets that were made for this special occasion. The painted eggs were a lot of fun, especially for the many kids that attended. We had a tremendous amount of help from our community over Easter baking koulourakya, painting the eggs, cooking the lambs, preparing the epitafio, preparing food and organising the whole event. The support of all our wonderful volunteers is greatly appreciated and we would like to thank everyone for all their hard work. Efharisto poli! Εορτασμός του Πάσχα Την Κυριακή 4 Απριλίου, μετά τη λειτουργία της Εκκλησίας μας γιορτάσαμε το Ελληνικό Πάσχα στο χωλ της Κοινότητάς μας. Αν και υπήρχαν μερικά σύννεφα στον ορίζοντα είχαμε πολύ κόσμο και υπήρχε άφθονο κέφι. Ξεκινήσαμε με ωραία σούπα, είχαμε νοστιμότατα αρνιά στην σούβλα μαζί με τυρόπιτες, σπανακόπιτες και μεγάλη ποικιλία από άφθονο φαγητό. Μετά όλοι απολαύσαμε τα κουλουράκια και άλλα Ελληνικά γλυκά. Είχαμε και κόκκινα αυγά, παραδοσιακό έθιμο του Πάσχα και ιδιαίτερα αγαπητά στα μικρά παιδιά. Είχαμε απίστευτη βοήθεια από τα μέλη της Κοινότητάς μας κατά τη διάρκεια του Πάσχα, φτιάχνοντας κουλουράκια, βάφοντας αυγά, ψήνοντας τα αρνιά, ετοιμάζοντας τον επιτάφιο, ετοιμάζοντας άφθονο φαγητό και διοργανώνοντας την εκδήλωση του Πάσχα. Πραγματικά εκτιμούμε αφάνταστα τη βοήθεια των υπέροχων εθελοντών μας, σας ευχαριστούμε θερμά ΟΛΟΥΣ! Notes/Messages Kritos family thanks everybody for their support and wishes during Lois Kritos operation. Η Εθνική μας Εορτή της 25 ης Μαρτίου Η Εθνική μας Εορτή της 25 ης Μαρτίου γιορτάστηκε στο χωλ της Κοινότητάς μας το Σάββατο 27 Μαρτίου. Γιορτάσαμε και τον Ευαγγελισμό της Θεοτόκου. Όλα τα μέλη μας φέρανε και από ένα πιάτο φαγητό και ποτό. Υπήρχε όμως άφθονο φαγητό, νοστιμότατο και με πολλά νηστίσιμα μαγειρεμένο από τους καταπληκτικούς μας εθελοντές. Ήρθε πολύς κόσμος που χορέψανε, διασκεδάσανε και σπάσαμε και πιάτα. Καταφέραμε να κρατήσουμε αρκετή ησυχία και η αστυνομία δεν ήρθε ευτυχώς. Περάσαμε πολύ ωραία και ευχαριστούμε θερμά όλους όσους βοήθησαν στην επιτυχία της εκδήλωσής μας. Όπως λένε και οι Έλληνες «και του χρόνου». Celebration of Easter Day On Sunday 4th April, after the church service we celebrated Greek Easter at our community hall. Even though we had a few light showers this didn't dampen the turnout of people or the festive mood. Andreas Matiatos celebrated 40 years wedding with his beloved wife Angela. Our sincere condolences to Dimitris Borobokas and Vasso Misich's family for the loss of their beloved sister in Greece. In its April 25 edition, the Sunday Express said that doubts over Nick Clegg s commitment to British interests in the EU intensified last night after it emerged he once led a campaign to return the historic Elgin Marbles to his friends in Greece. As an MEP, the paper claimed, Clegg berated the British Museum for guarding the statues, saying it was like displaying Big Ben s clock in the Louvre. Clegg, who was MEP between 1999 and 2004, helped organise the 2002 Marbles in Exile conference, held in the European Parliament, where he demanded Britain return them to Athens. Chios prefect: Abolish tourism visa for Turkish nationals CHIOS Prefect Polidoros Lambrinoudis has addressed a letter to Prime Minister George Papandreou requesting that the abolition of the visa requirement for Turkish nationals, citing the need to boost tourism arrivals from the neighbouring non-schengen Pact country. The prefect of the eastern Aegean island underlined that the recovery of the Greek economy is closely linked with the growth of the tourism sector, stressing that such a measure would boost tourist arrivals and benefit the local economy. Cruise ship sails, for now NO MORE angry scenes at the port of Piraeus where several hundred striking dockers had blocked nearly 1,000 foreign passengers from returning to their cruise ship on April 26 in protest against reforms aimed at reviving Greece s debt-ridden economy. GREEK NEWS IN ENGLISH (FROM THE ONLINE NEWSPAPER ATHENS NEWS ) US to Fyrom: Resolve the name dispute THE AMERICAN ambassador to the Former Yugloslav Republic of Macedonia (Fyrom) warned the tiny Balkan republic last week that its future depends on it resolving a long-running dispute with Greece over its name. Without finding a resolution, I think, [Fyrom s] future leaves a large question mark. It is time to focus not on what solutions aren t acceptable, but on what solutions are acceptable, US Ambassador Philip Reeker (photo) told reporters in Skopje. Greece says its neighbour s use of the name Macedonia implies territorial claims on its own northern region of the same name. Athens has blocked Fyrom s accession to Nato over the issue and threatens to do the same with its bid to join the European Union. The clock is ticking... it is important to get this done now and that is certainly what we keep urging both [Fyrom] and Greece to do, Reeker said. Fyrom s conservative Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski recently said he opposed one proposed name, Republic of Northern Macedonia, and would call a referendum if it were officially presented as a solution. The protesters from the communist union PAME prevented some 970 mostly Spanish tourists from boarding the Maltese-flagged Zenith. We had to take them to hotels, said Michalis Nomikos, head of Zenith s operator, Donomis. The impression we made on them was really bad. The company is now reportedly thinking about taking the port of Piraeus off the ship s sailing itinerary. In a statement issued on April 27, the Federation of Greek Tourist Enterprises (SETE) estimates this will cost Greece 400 jobs and some 10 million euros in lost revenue. SETE also called on the government to take immediate measures to improve Greece s dwindling image abroad as an ideal tourism destination. Arson attacks on Greek embassies POLICE in the Czech Republic say they are investigating an arson attack on the Greek Embassy in Prague. A police spokeswoman said a fire caused by an unknown flammable substance that was hurled in the direction of the embassy s garden early April 29 damaged the entrance door before it was extinguished by firefighters. The embassy, which was closed at the time, says the damage was not serious. The Membership fee for a family is only $50 and for an individual $30 annually.
