1 Feast of the Circumcision of Our Lord and of Saint Basil the Great, January 1 The Circumcision in the Flesh of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and commemoration of our Father among the Saints Basil the Great, Archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia. Jnauary 1 The eighth day following His birth, the Divine Child was presented in the Temple and circumcised according to the Law existing in Israel since the time of Abraham. On this occasion, He was given the name Jesus, which the Archangel Gabriel announced to the All-Holy Virgin Mary. The Old Testament circumcision was the proto-type of the New Testament baptism. The circumcision of our Lord shows that He received upon Himself the true body of man and not just seemingly, as was later taught of Him by heretics. Our Lord was also circumcised because He wanted to fulfill the entire Law which He Himself gave through the prophets and forefathers. In fulfilling the written Law, He replaced it with Baptism in His Holy Church as was proclaimed by the Apostle Paul: For neither does circumcision mean anything, nor does uncircumcision, but only a new creation (Galatians 6:15). Saint Basil was born during the reign of Emperor Constantine. While still unbaptized, Basil spent fifteen years in Athens where he studied philosophy, rhetoric, astronomy and all other secular sciences of that time. His colleagues at that time were Gregory the Theologian and Julian, later the apostate emperor. In his mature years he was baptized in the river Jordan along with Euvlios his former teacher. He was Bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia for almost ten years and completed his earthly life fifty years after his birth. He was a great defender of Orthodoxy, a great light of moral purity, a religious zealot, a great theological mind, a great builder and pillar of the Church of God. Basil fully deserved the title Great. In liturgical services, he is referred to as the bee of the Church of Christ which brings honey to the faithful and with its stinger pricks the heretics. Numerous works of this Father of the Church are preserved; they include theological, apologetical, ascetical and canonical writings as well as the Holy and Divine Liturgy named after him. This Divine Liturgy is celebrated ten times throughout the year: the First of January, his feast day; on the eve of the Nativity of our Lord; on the eve of the Epiphany of our Lord; all Sundays of the Great Fast, except Palm Sunday; on Great and Holy Thursday and on Great and Holy Saturday. St. Basil died peacefully on January 1, 379, and was translated into the Kingdom of Christ. 1

Stichos 3 Στίχος γ From the morning watch until night, from the morning watch let Israel hope in the Lord. The all-good God, was not ashamed to be cut by circumcision of the flesh, but gave us himself as a type and example to all for salvation; for the Maker of the Law fulfills the Law, and the sayings of the Prophets concerning him; O You Who hold all things in the hollow of Your hand and were wrapped in swaddling clothes, O Lord, glory to you. 3 Stichos 4 Στίχος δ For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him is plenteous redemption; and He shall redeem Israel out of all his iniquities. Called by a name which means royal, when you, Father, had shepherded the royal priesthood, the holy nation of Christ, with true wisdom and knowledge, then the King of kings and Lord of all, the Son eternally of one mind and without beginning with His Begetter, adorned you, O Basil, with a diadem of the kingdom; implore Him to save and enlighten our souls. Stichos 5 Στίχος ε Praise the Lord, all you nations, praise Him, all you peoples. Dazzling in the robes of high priesthood, you proclaimed with joy the Gospel of the Kingdom, O Basil, pouring out for the Church teachings of Orthodoxy; now enlightened by them we confess one Godhead in a Father almighty, an only-begotten Word of God, and a divine Spirit, and we glorify it, inseparable in Three Persons; implore this one Godhead to save and enlighten our souls. Stichos 6 For He has made His mercy to prevail over us, and the truth of the Lord abides to the ages. United and dwelling with the heavenly choirs, whose life you rivaled, O Father Basil, by the radiant sincerity of your way of life, as you once lived among those on earth like one without flesh while still in the body, implore Christ our God to save those who delight in your teaching, inspired by God from dangers and the darkness of ignorance, and to enlighten our souls. 4 You came to love wisdom, O Venerable one, and, preferring a life lived in companionship with God to all existing things, you abandoned concern for death, as befitted your life; for having destroyed for yourself the passions of the flesh by ascetic labors and by care for the Law of God, having kept the dignity of your soul unenslaved by an abundance of virtue, you subdued all fleshly thought by the Spirit; and so, having hated the flesh and the world and the ruler of the world, as you stand before Christ, ask for our souls His great mercy. The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way. From the beginning, before there was ever an earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills, I was brought forth. While as yet the Lord had not made the earth or the fields, or the primal dust of the world. When He prepared the heavens, I was there, when He drew a circle on the face of the deep. When He established the clouds above, when He strengthened the fountains of the deep; when He assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters would not transgress His command, when He marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside Him as a master craftsman; and I was daily His delight, rejoicing always before Him. Third Reading Eclectic: Proverbs and Wisdom of Solomon Tone 1 Basil the Monastic My mouth shall speak wisdom, and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding. You have received the imprint of the virtues of all the Saints, O our Father Basil: the meekness of Moses; the zeal of Elias; the confession of Peter; the theology of John; like Paul you do not cease to cry out: Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is scandalized, and I am not on fire? Therefore as you now dwell with them, intercede that our souls may be saved. Ode 4 Ὠδὴ δ He whom You, O Lord, called the voice crying in the wilderness heard Your voice as You thundered upon the many waters bearing witness to Your Son; wholly filled with the presence of the Spirit he cried: You are Christ, the Wisdom and Power of God. Iambic Once purged by the fire of mystical vision, the Prophet, hymning the renewal of mortals, cried in a loud voice energized by the Spirit, telling the ineffable Wordʹs incarnation. He it is who crushed the power of the princes. Ode 6 Ὠδὴ ς The voice of the Word, the lamp of the Light, the light-bearer and forerunner of the Sun, cries out in the wilderness to all peoples: Repent and be cleansed, for behold Christ is here to deliver the world from corruption. Iambic With the blessed utterance the Father proclaimed Producing from the womb His beloved Son. This is My own connatural Offspring, said He, splendor of My Light, now also borne of mankind, both My living Word, and by providence mortal. Ode 7 Ὠδὴ ζ The pious youths walked together in the fiery furnace and were preserved from harm by the breath of the wind, by the dew, and by the descent of God s angel. Wherefore, refreshed with dew amidst the flames, they sang in thanksgiving: Blessed and praised above all are You, God and Lord of our fathers. Iambic He Who retarded once the towering fire within the furnace that held the pious young men burned the dragonsʹ heads in the river s streams, and the stubborn stain of sin He has completely washed away therein, with the dew of the Spirit. Ode 8 Ὠδὴ η We praise, we bless, and we worship the Lord. The furnace of Babylon manifested a marvelous mystery as it poured forth dew; for the Jordan will receive the immaterial fire in its streams, and, receiving flesh, will baptize the Creator Whom the people bless and exalt unto the ages of ages. 18 Kanon Deacon The Theotokos and Mother of the Light, let us magnify in hymns of honor. Ode 9 Ὠδὴ θ Tone 2 Ἦχος β Magnify, O my soul, she who is more honorable and more glorious than the heavenly powers. From your virgin womb you ineffably gave a body to God who dawned as the beacon before the sun, and who dwelt among us in the body, O blessed, all-pure Mother of God, we magnify you. Magnify, O my soul, him was circumcised in the flesh according to the Law. (Repeat) From your virgin womb you ineffably gave a body to God who dawned as the beacon before the sun, and who dwelt among us in the body, O blessed, all-pure Mother of God, we magnify you. Magnify, O my soul, him who received circumcision on the eighth day. Passing beyond the bounds of all human nature, Christ is born of a Virgin, and as the letter of the law lays down is circumcised in the flesh and shown to be one who fulfils the Law. Today the Master was circumcised in the flesh and was named Jesus. Come, let us with holiness celebrate the festival of the glorious name day of the Master, Christ; for in a manner fitting God he is called Jesus today; with this let us also magnify the memory of the Hierarch. Magnify, O my soul, Basil the Great, among the Hierarchs. Others for the Canon of the Saint. As a faithful sheep of Christ the Chief Τοῦ Ἀρχιποίµενος ὡς πρόβατον, πιστὸν Shepherd you followed, Basil, in his lifebearing steps; for you for you gave up your ἐπηκολούθησας τῷ τυράννῳ γὰρ τὴν σαυτοῦ Χριστοῦ Βασίλειε, τοῖς ζωηφόροις ἴχνεσιν soul, all-blessed Father, to the tyrant, nobly ψυχὴν Πάτερ προδέδωκας, προκινδυνεύων braving danger for the Church. 18

19 Magnify, O my soul, Basil, the Great, of Caesarea. When he perceived the most sacred body of Christ s Church adorned by your high priesthood, wise Basil, the all-destructive tyrant fell, struck by lightning; for he could endure the beam of the Spirit that was in you. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Magnify O my soul, the power of the undivided Godhead, in three Persons. You were counted worthy, Basil, of the throne of the Apostles, the choir of Christ s Champions, the tent of the Patriarchs, the delight of the Just and the choir of the Prophets; for you became an initiate of the Mother of God and a worshipper of the Trinity. Now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Magnify O my soul, her that delivered us, from the curse. The Lord, who alone covers his upper chambers with the waters, reins back the sea and dries up the deeps, taking flesh from you, pure Virgin, hastens from Bethlehem to Jordan, to be baptised in the flesh. First Katavasia Magnify O my soul, the one who is more honorable and more glorious than the host above. Every tongue is at a loss to praise you properly; even an other-worldly intellect is filled with dizziness as it seeks to praise you, O Theotokos. Since you are good, accept our faith; for inspired by God you know our longing: we magnify you who truly are the protector of Christians. Second Katavasia (Iambic) Magnify O my soul, her that delivered us, from the curse. 20 Small Litany Feast of the Circumcision of Our Lord and of Saint Basil the Great, January 1 Exaposteilarion Of the Saint Tone 3 The Elder in the spirit in the Temple With love of true love of wisdom, O Father, you circumcised the covering of your soul and were revealed to the world as a sun by your wonders, and you flooded the minds of the faithful with light, O Basil, worshipper of the Trinity and initiate of the Theotokos. Of the Feast The same melody The Creator of the ages, Who fulfilled the law as a baby of eight days, is circumcised in the flesh; and He is wrapped in swaddling clothes as a mortal and He Who holds all things by his infinite strength as God, and ends them in an instant, is nourished with milk. Praises Let every breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the highest. To You is due praise, O God. Praise Him all you His angels; praise Him all you His hosts. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen. Only begotten Son and Word of God, immortal One, Who for our salvation did so humble Yourself, by taking on flesh (taking flesh from) from the Theotokos and ever- Virgin Mary, without change did You become Man. And were crucified Christ our God, but conquered death by Your death. As one of the Holy Trinity, and being glorified together with the Father and the Holy Spirit: save us.
