1 The Holy Theophany of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ Τὰ Ἁγία Θεοφανεία τοῦ Κυρίου καὶ Θεοῦ καὶ Σωτήρος ἡµῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ January 6 When our Lord reached thirty years from His physical birth, He began His teaching and salvific work. He Himself signified this beginning of the beginning by His baptism in the Jordan river. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem says, The beginning of the world: water; the beginning of the Gospel: Jordan. At the time of the baptism of the Lord in water, a mystery was declared to the world: that mystery which was prophesied in the Old Testament; the mystery about which in ancient Egypt and India was only fabled; i.e., the mystery of the Divine Holy Trinity. The Father was revealed to the sense of hearing; the Spirit was revealed to the sense of sight; and in addition to these, the Son was revealed to the sense of touch. The Father uttered His witness about the Son, the Son was baptized in the water, and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove hovered above the water. When John the Baptist witnessed and said about Christ, Behold, the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29), and when John immersed and baptized the Lord in the Jordan, the mission of Christ in the world and the path of our salvation was shown. In other words, the Lord took upon Himself the sins of mankind and died under them (immersion) and became alive again (the coming out of the water); and we must die as the old sinful man and become alive again as cleansed, renewed and regenerated. This is the Savior and this is the path of salvation. The Feast of Theophany is also called the Feast of Illumination. For us, the event in the Jordan river illuminates, by manifesting to us God as Trinity, consubstantial and undivided. That is one way. And, the second way is this: everyone of us through baptism in water is illumined by this, that we become adopted by the Father of Lights through the merits of the Son and the power of the Holy Spirit. 1

Come then, naked children of Adam, and let us clothe ourselves in Him, that we may warm ourselves. You are a protection and veil to the naked, a light to those in darkness; You have come, You have been made manifest: You are the Light unapproachable. 7 Ode 4 Ὠδὴ δ He whom You, O Lord, called the voice crying in the wilderness heard Your voice as You thundered upon the many waters bearing witness to Your Son; wholly filled with the presence of the Spirit he cried: You are Christ, the Wisdom and Power of God. Iambic Once purged by the fire of mystical vision, the Prophet, hymning the renewal of mortals, cried in a loud voice energized by the Spirit, telling the ineffable Wordʹs incarnation. He it is who crushed the power of the princes. Thus says the Lord: The wilderness and the Τάδε λέγει Κύριος Εὐφράνθητι ἔρηµος solitary place shall be glad for them; and the διψῶσα, ἀγαλλιάσθω ἔρηµος, καὶ ἀνθείτω ὡς desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. It κρίνον. Καὶ ἑξανθήσει, καὶ ὑλοχαρήσει, καὶ shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice even ἀγαλλιασεται τὰ ἔρηµα τοῦ Ἰορδάνου καὶ ἡ with joy and singing: the glory of Lebanon δόξα τοῦ Λιβάνου ἐδόθη αὐτῇ, καὶ ἡ τιµὴ τοῦ shall be given unto it, the excellency of Καρµήλου καὶ ὁ λαός µου ὄψεται τὴν δόξαν Carmel and Sharon, they shall see the glory of Κυρίου, καὶ τὸ ὕψος τοῦ Θεοῦ. Ἰσχύσατε the Lord, and the excellency of our God. χεῖρες ἀνειµέναι, καὶ γόνατα παραλελυµένα. Strengthen the weak hands, and confirm the Παρακαλέσατε, καὶ εἴπατε τοῖς ὀλιγοψύχοις feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful τῇ διανοίᾳ Ἰσχύσατε καὶ µὴ φοβεῖσθε ἰδοὺ ὁ heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God Θεὸς ἡµῶν κρίσιν ἀνταποδίδωσι, καὶ will come with vengeance, even God with a ἀνταποδώσει, αὐτὸς ἥξει καὶ σώσει ἡµᾶς. recompense; he will come and save you. Τότε ἀνοιχθήσονται ὀφθαλµοὶ τυφλῶν, καὶ Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and ὦτα κωφῶν ἀκούσονται. Τότε ἁλεῖται χωλὸς the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then ὡς ἔλαφος, καὶ τρανὴ ἔσται γλῶσσα shall the lame man leap as a hart, and the µογγιλάλων, ὅτι ἐρράγη ἐν τῇ ἐρήµῳ ὕδωρ, tongue of the dumb shall sing: for in the καὶ φάραγξ ἐν γῇ διψώσῃ. Καὶ ἔσται ἡ wilderness shall waters break out, and streams ἄνυδρος εἰς ἕλη, καὶ εἰς τὴν διψῶσαν γῆν πηγὴ in the desert. And the parched ground shall ὕδατος ἔσται, ἐκεῖ ἔσται εὐφροσύνη ὀρνέων, become a pool, and the thirsty land shall ἐπαύλεις ποιµνίων καὶ καλάµη καὶ ἕλη. Καὶ become springs of water: in the habitation of ἔσται ἐκεῖ ὁδὸς καθαρά, καὶ ὁδὸς ἁγία dragons, where each lay, there shall be grass κληθήσεται, οὐ µὴ παρέλθῃ ἐκεῖ ἀκάθαρτος, with reeds and rushes. And a highway shall be οὐδὲ ἔσται ἐκεῖ ὁδὸς ἀκάθαρτος, οἱ δὲ there, and a way, and it shall be called The διεσπαρµένοι πορεύσονται ἐπ αὐτῆς, καὶ οὐ Way of Holiness; the unclean shall not pass µὴ πλανηθῶσι. Καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ἐκεῖ λέων, οὐδὲ over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring τῶν πονηρῶν θηρίων, οὐ µὴ ἀναβῇ εἰς αὐτήν, men, though fools, shall not err therein. No οὐδὲ µὴ εὑρεθῇ ἐκεῖ ἀλλὰ πορεύσονται ἐν lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast αὐτῇ λελυτρωµένοι καὶ συνηγµένοι ὑπὸ shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there; Κυρίου. Καὶ ἀποστραφήσονται, καὶ ἥξουσιν but the redeemed shall walk there. And the εἰς Σιὼν µετ εὐφροσύνης καὶ ἀγαλλιάσεως, 19

Thus says the Lord: Every one who thirsts, Τάδε λέγει Κύριος οἱ διψῶντες πορεύεσθε come to the waters; and he that has no money; ἐφ ὕδωρ, καὶ ὅσοι µὴ ἔχετε ἀργύριον, come, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and βαδίσαντες ἀγοράσατε, καὶ φάγεσθε, καὶ milk without money and without price. Why πίεσθε ἄνευ ἀργυρίου καὶ τιµῆς οἶνον καὶ do you spend money for that which is not στέαρ, ἵνα τὶ τιµᾶσθε ἀργυρίου ἐν οὐκ ἄρτοις, bread? and why labour for that which does not καὶ ὁ µόχθος ὑµῶν οὐκ εἰς πλησµονήν; satisfy? Hearken diligently unto me, and eat Ἀκούσατέ µου, καὶ φάγεσθε ἀγαθά, καὶ that which is good, and let your soul delight ἐντρυφήσει ἐν ἀγαθοῖς ἡ ψυχὴ ὑµῶν. itself in fatness. Behold, you ἄρχοντα καὶ προστάσσοντα ἐν Ἔθνεσιν. Ἰδοὺ shall call a nation that you do not know, and Ἔθνη, ἃ οὐκ οἴδασί σε, ἐπικαλέσονταί σε, καὶ nations that did not know you shall run unto λαοί, οἳ οὐκ ἐπίστανταί σε, ἐπὶ σε you because of the Lord your God, and for the καταφεύξονται, ἕνεκεν Κυρίου τοῦ Θεοῦ σου, Holy One of Israel; for He has glorified you. καὶ τοῦ Ἁγίου Ἰσραήλ, ὅτι ἐδόξασέ σε. Seek the Lord while He may be found, call Ζητήσατε τὸν Κύριον, καὶ ἐν τῷ εὑρίσκειν upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked αὐτόν, ἐπικαλέσασθε, ἡνίκα δ ἂν ἐγγίζῃ ὑµῖν, forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his ἀπολιπέτω ὁ ἀσεβὴς τάς ὁδοὺς αὐτοῦ, καὶ thoughts. Let him return unto the Lord, and He ἀνὴρ ἄνοµος τάς βουλὰς αὐτοῦ, καὶ will have mercy upon him; let him return to ἐπιστράφητε πρὸς Κύριον, καὶ ἐλεηθήσεσθε, our God, for He will abundantly pardon. For καὶ κράξεσθε, ὅτι ἐπὶ πολὺ ἀφήσει τάς My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are ἁµαρτίας ὑµῶν. Οὐ γὰρ εἰσιν αἱ βουλαί µου, your ways My ways, says the Lord. For as the ὥσπερ αἱ βουλαὶ ὑµῶν, οὐδ ὥσπερ αἱ ὁδοὶ heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ὑµῶν, αἱ ὁδοί µου, λέγει Κύριος. Ἀλλ ὡς ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts ἀπέχει ὁ οὐρανὸς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς, οὕτως ἀπέχει ἡ than your thoughts. For as the rain comes ὁδός µου ἀπὸ τῶν ὁδῶν ὑµῶν, καὶ τὰ down, and the snow from heaven, and returns διανοήµατα ὑµῶν ἀπὸ τῆς διανοίας µου. Ὡς not thence, but waters the earth, and makes it γὰρ ἂν καταβῇ ὑετός, ἢ χιὼν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to καὶ οὐ µὴ ἀποστραφῇ ἕως ἂν µεθύσῃ τὴν γῆν, the sower, and bread to the eater so shall My καὶ ἐκτέκῃ, καὶ ἐκβλαστήσῃ, καὶ δῷ σπέρµα word be that goes forth out of My mouth: it τῷ σπείροντι, καὶ ἄρτον εἰς βρῶσιν, οὕτως shall not return unto Me void, but it shall ἔσται τὸ ῥῆµά µου, ὃ ἐὰν ἐξέλθῃ ἐκ τοῦ accomplish that which I please, and it shall στόµατός µου, οὐ µὴ ἀποστραφῇ πρὸς µε prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. For you κενόν, ἕως ἂν τελεσθῇ ὅσα ἂν ἠθέλησα, καὶ shall go out with joy, and be led forth with εὐοδώσω τάς ὁδούς µου, καὶ τὰ ἐντάλµατά peace; the mountains and the hills shall break µου. Ἐν γὰρ εὐφροσύνῃ ἐξελεύσεσθε, καὶ ἐν 20

21 forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree: and it shall be to the Lord for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off. χαρᾷ διδαχθήσεσθε τὰ γὰρ ὄρη καὶ οἱ βουνοὶ ἑξαλοῦνται, προσδεχόµενοι ὑµᾶς ἐν χαρᾷ, καὶ πάντα τὰ ξύλα τοῦ ἀγροῦ ἐπικροτήσει τοῖς κλάδοις. 24 Deacon That it may be granted the grace of redemption, and the blessing of the Jordan, let us pray to the Lord. Deacon That we may be enlightened by the light of knowledge and true worship through the descent of the Holy Spirit, let us pray to the Lord. Deacon That this water may bestow sanctification, redemption of sins, healing of soul and body, and every necessary benefit, let us pray to the Lord. Deacon That this water may be beneficial unto eternal life, let us pray to the Lord. Deacon That it may drive away every cunning device of our enemies, visible and invisible, let us pray to the Lord. Deacon For those who drink of these waters and who take them home for the sanctification of their dwellings, let us pray to the Lord. Today the bitter water has become sweet at the hands of Moses by the presence of the Lord. Today we are delivered from the ancient mourning, and are saved like a new Israel. Today error is annulled and the coming of the Lord prepares the way of salvation. Today the celestial beings celebrate with those on earth, and earthly beings commune with those in heaven.
