1 The Holy Theophany of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ Τὰ Ἁγία Θεοφανεία τοῦ Κυρίου καὶ Θεοῦ καὶ Σωτήρος ἡµῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ January 6 When our Lord reached thirty years from His physical birth, He began His teaching and salvific work. He Himself signified this beginning of the beginning by His baptism in the Jordan river. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem says, The beginning of the world: water; the beginning of the Gospel: Jordan. At the time of the baptism of the Lord in water, a mystery was declared to the world: that mystery which was prophesied in the Old Testament; the mystery about which in ancient Egypt and India was only fabled; i.e., the mystery of the Divine Holy Trinity. The Father was revealed to the sense of hearing; the Spirit was revealed to the sense of sight; and in addition to these, the Son was revealed to the sense of touch. The Father uttered His witness about the Son, the Son was baptized in the water, and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove hovered above the water. When John the Baptist witnessed and said about Christ, Behold, the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29), and when John immersed and baptized the Lord in the Jordan, the mission of Christ in the world and the path of our salvation was shown. In other words, the Lord took upon Himself the sins of mankind and died under them (immersion) and became alive again (the coming out of the water); and we must die as the old sinful man and become alive again as cleansed, renewed and regenerated. This is the Savior and this is the path of salvation. The Feast of Theophany is also called the Feast of Illumination. For us, the event in the Jordan river illuminates, by manifesting to us God as Trinity, consubstantial and undivided. That is one way. And, the second way is this: everyone of us through baptism in water is illumined by this, that we become adopted by the Father of Lights through the merits of the Son and the power of the Holy Spirit. 1

3 (Repeat) You have appeared, O Savior Christ, in the Jordan and were baptized by the Forerunner; and witness was borne to You, that You are the beloved Son. Thus You were revealed as co-eternal with the Father, and the Holy Spirit descended upon You. Enlightened by you we cry: Glory to God in the Trinity. After the Second Stichologia Tone 4 Joseph was amazed O Jordan river, What have you beheld that has amazed you? I have seen Him naked, Who cannot be seen, and I trembled, said he. How should I not turn back and tremble before Him? The angels beholding Him, were afraid; heaven was filled with wonder and the earth shook, the sea and all things visible and invisible withdrew. Christ has appeared in the Jordan, to sanctify the waters. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. By the Holy Spirit, the streams of grace are flowing, watering, all of the creation, granting life upon it. Prokeimenon The sea fled at the sight; the Jordan turned back on its course. Ready for baptism, He stood in the Jordan and the Forerunner said to Him: How shall I stretch forth my hand and touch the head of Him Who rules all things? Even though You are the Child of Mary, I nonetheless know that You are the pre-eternal God; You walk upon the earth, You Whose praises the Seraphim sing. And I Who am but a servant do not know how to baptize the Master O ineffable Lord, glory to You. God, save Your people and bless Your inheritance... Kontakion of the Feast Read (Tone 4) You have appeared today, to all the world; and Your light, O Lord, has shined upon us. In this knowledge we praise You. You have come, You have appeared: You are the Light unapproachable. 6 dawn has appeared as lightning from Bethlehem. The Lord born from Mary, the Sun of righteousness, sheds His rays upon the whole inhabited earth. Come then, naked children of Adam, and let us clothe ourselves in Him, that we may warm ourselves. You are a protection and veil to the naked, a light to those in darkness; You have come, You have been made manifest: You are the Light unapproachable. Synaxarion On the sixth day of the month, we celebrate the holy Theophany of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory and power, unto the ages of ages. Amen. Katavasiai of the Feast of the Theophany From the ancient snares of the gluttonous lions, whose teeth are broken, we have been delivered. Let us exult, then, and our mouth let us widen, weaving melody from words unto the Logos, Whose delight it is to bestow gifts upon us. 6 ἀστράπτουσα µᾶλλον δὲ ἐκ Μαρίας ὁ Κύριος πάσῃ τῇ οἰκουµένῃ ἀνατέλλει τάς ἀκτῖνας, ὁ Ἥλιος τῆς Δικαιοσύνης. Καταβασίαι τῆς Ἑορτῆς τῶν Φώτων Tone 2 Ἦχος β Ode 1 Ὠδὴ α The Lord, mighty in battle, uncovered the foundations of the depths, and led His servants on dry ground; but He submerged their adversaries with the waters; for He is glorified Iambic Israel treaded on the seaʹs swelling billow, which had been rendered once again into dry land. Then the dark waters concealed all the Egyptian riders together, as a tomb laid in water, by the mighty strength of the right of the Master. Ode 3 Ὠδὴ γ The Lord Who gives strength to our kings, and exalts the horn of His anointed, is born of a Virgin, and comes to be baptized. Thus let us the faithful cry: none is as holy as our God, and none is as worthy as You, O Lord.

7 Ode 4 Ὠδὴ δ He whom You, O Lord, called the voice crying in the wilderness heard Your voice as You thundered upon the many waters bearing witness to Your Son; wholly filled with the presence of the Spirit he cried: You are Christ, the Wisdom and Power of God. Iambic Once purged by the fire of mystical vision, the Prophet, hymning the renewal of mortals, cried in a loud voice energized by the Spirit, telling the ineffable Wordʹs incarnation. He it is who crushed the power of the princes. Ode 5 Ὠδὴ ε Jesus, the Origin of life, dissolved the condemnation of Adam the first-created; and, He Who as God needs no cleansing, was Himself cleansed to purify the Jordan, in which He has slain enmity and thereby grants an ineffable peace. Iambic The Spiritʹs cleansing has washed now away the dark and dirty enemyʹs poison venom. Therefore we have landed on a new unerring path, which leads to happiness that has no access, save to them whom God to Himself reconciled. Ode 6 Ὠδὴ ς The voice of the Word, the lamp of the Light, the light-bearer and forerunner of the Sun, cries out in the wilderness to all peoples: Repent and be cleansed, for behold Christ is here to deliver the world from corruption. Iambic With the blessed utterance the Father proclaimed Producing from the womb His beloved Son. This is My own connatural Offspring, said He, splendor of My Light, now also borne of mankind, both My living Word, and by providence mortal. Ode 7 Ὠδὴ ζ The pious youths walked together in the fiery Νέους εὐσεβεῖς, καµίνῳ πυρὸς furnace and were preserved from harm by the προσοµιλήσαντας, διασυρίζον πνεῦµα breath of the wind, by the dew, and by the δρόσου, ἀβλαβεῖς διεφύλαξε, καὶ θείου descent of God s angel. Wherefore, refreshed ἀγγέλου συγκατάβασις ὅθεν ἐν φλογὶ with dew amidst the flames, they sang in δροσιζόµενοι, εὐχαρίστως ἀνέµελπον 7

8 thanksgiving: Blessed and praised above all are You, God and Lord of our fathers. Iambic He Who retarded once the towering fire within the furnace that held the pious young men burned the dragonsʹ heads in the river s streams, and the stubborn stain of sin He has completely washed away therein, with the dew of the Spirit. Ode 8 Ὠδὴ η We praise, we bless, and we worship the Lord. The furnace of Babylon manifested a marvelous mystery as it poured forth dew; for the Jordan will receive the immaterial fire in its streams, and, receiving flesh, will baptize the Creator Whom the people bless and exalt unto the ages of ages. Iambic The created world exults in its liberty, and sons of the light are they who were darkened. Only the champion of darkness is groaning. Now let the formerly wretched inheritance of the Nations bless eagerly Him Who caused this. Kanon Deacon The Theotokos and Mother of the Light, let us magnify in hymns of honor. Ode 9 Ὠδὴ θ Tone 2 Ἦχος β Magnify, O my soul, she who is more honorable and more glorious than the heavenly powers. From your virgin womb you ineffably gave a body to God who dawned as the beacon before the sun, and who dwelt among us in the body, O blessed, all-pure Mother of God, we magnify you. Magnify, O my soul, him was circumcised in the flesh according to the Law. (Repeat) From your virgin womb you (Πάλιν) Ἡ τὸν πρὸ ἡλίου φωστῆρα, τὸν Θεὸν ineffably gave a body to God who dawned as ἑξανατείλαντα, σωµατικῶς ἡµῖν the beacon before the sun, and who dwelt ἐπιδηµήσαντα, ἐκ λαγόνων παρθενικῶν, among us in the body, O blessed, all-pure ἀφράστως σωµατώσασα, εὐλογηµένη Mother of God, we magnify you. 8

9 Magnify, O my soul, him who received circumcision on the eighth day. Passing beyond the bounds of all human nature, Christ is born of a Virgin, and as the letter of the law lays down is circumcised in the flesh and shown to be one who fulfils the Law. Today the Master was circumcised in the flesh and was named Jesus. Come, let us with holiness celebrate the festival of the glorious name day of the Master, Christ; for in a manner fitting God he is called Jesus today; with this let us also magnify the memory of the Hierarch. Magnify, O my soul, Basil the Great, among the Hierarchs. As a faithful sheep of Christ the Chief Shepherd you followed, Basil, in his lifebearing steps; for you for you gave up your soul, all-blessed Father, to the tyrant, nobly braving danger for the Church. Magnify, O my soul, Basil, the Great, of Caesarea. When he perceived the most sacred body of Christ s Church adorned by your high priesthood, wise Basil, the all-destructive tyrant fell, struck by lightning; for he could endure the beam of the Spirit that was in you. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Magnify O my soul, the power of the undivided Godhead, in three Persons. You were counted worthy, Basil, of the throne of the Apostles, the choir of Christ s Champions, the tent of the Patriarchs, the delight of the Just and the choir of the Prophets; for you became an initiate of the Mother of God and a worshipper of the Trinity. Now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Magnify O my soul, her that delivered us, from the curse. To You, O Lord. Prayer While the Litany of Peace is being intoned by the Deacon, the Priest reads the following prayer silently Priest O Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son, Who remains in the bosom of the Father, true God, Fountain of life and immortality, Light of Light, You Who came into the world to enlighten it: enlighten our minds by Your Holy Spirit and accept us as we offer You magnification and thanksgiving for Your great and wonderful works which are from eternity, and for Your dispensation unto salvation in these last days. For in these last days You took upon Yourself our weak and poor creation, and condescended, O King of all, to become man; and again You also consented to be baptized at the hand of a servant, so that by sanctifying the nature of water, O sinless One, You might prepare a way for our birth to be renewed through water and the Spirit, thus restoring unto us our first freedom. As we celebrate the memory of this divine mystery, we beseech You, O You Who love mankind. Sprinkle us Your unworthy servants with purifying water and the gift of Your compassion according to Your divine promise; may the prayers that we sinners 25 Διάκ. Prayer By Sophronios, Patriarch of Jerusalem Following the petitions intoned by the Deacon, and the Amen concluding the Prayer, the Priest reads the following prayer aloud: Priest O Trinity, transcendent in essence, in goodness and in divinity, the Almighty Who watches over all, invisible and incomprehensible. O Creator of noetic natures endowed with rational speech, the Goodness of absolute unapproachable light that illumines every man who comes into the world: enlighten me also, Your unworthy servant, illumine the eyes of my mind that I may venture to praise Your countless benevolences and Your might. Let my prayers on behalf of this people be wholly acceptable, so that my sins might not prevent the descent here of Your Holy Spirit. Today the bitter water has become sweet at the hands of Moses by the presence of the Lord. Today we are delivered from the ancient mourning, and are saved like a new Israel. Today we have escaped from darkness, and have been illumined by the light of the Knowledge of God. 27 σε ὁρῶµεν, τὸν ἐκ τελείου τέλειον ἐπιφανέντα Θεὸν ἡµῶν. Priest Peace be with all. And with your spirit. Εὐχή Deacon Let us bow our heads to the Lord. To You, O Lord. The Priest reads the following prayer silently: Priest Incline Your ear, O Lord, and hear us. You Who sanctified water when You consented to be baptized in the Jordan, bless all of us who by bowing our heads indicate our bondage. And make us worthy to be filled with Your sanctification by receiving this water and sprinkling it; let it be, O Lord, for the health of our souls and bodies. The Priest exclaims: Ἱερεύς For You are the sanctification of our souls and bodies, and to You we send up glory and thanksgiving, and worship: with the Father Who has no beginning, and Your all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

33 Troparion Tone 1 He blesses the water crosswise with the hand cros, then plunges it into the water three times and raises it up thrice, singing the following Idiomelon: When You, O Lord, were baptized in the Jordan river, the worship of the Holy Trinity was manifested, for the voice of the Father bore witness to You, calling You His beloved Son; and the Spirit in the form of a dove, confirmed the sureness of these words. You Who appeared, O Christ God, and have enlightened the world, glory to You. (Repeat) When You, O Lord, were baptized in the Jordan river, the worship of the Holy Trinity was manifested, for the voice of the Father bore witness to You, calling You His beloved Son; and the Spirit in the form of a dove, confirmed the sureness of these words.
