1 Feast of Saint Gregory the Theologian January 25 Our Fathers among the Saints Gregory the Theologian Archbishop of Constantinople Τῶν ἐν Ἁγίοις Πατέρων ἡµῶν Γρηγορίου τοῦ Θεολόγου Ἀρχιεπισκόπος Κωνσταντινουπόλεως January 25 Saint Gregory was born in Nazianzus of a Greek father and a Christian mother. Gregory was especially influenced greatly by his good mother Nonna. Before his baptism, he studied in Athens along with Basil the Great and Julian the Apostate. Gregory often prophesied that Julian would become an apostate and a persecutor of the Church which actually happened. When he completed his studies, Gregory was baptized. Saint Basil consecrated him as bishop of Sasima, and Emperor Theodosios the Great summoned him to fill the vacant archepiscopal throne of Constantinople. He wrote numerous works of which his most famous are those concerning theology for which he is called The Theologian. Especially known because of its depth is his work: Homilies on The Holy Trinity. Saint Gregory wrote against the heretic Macedonios who erroneously taught that the Holy Spirit is a creation of God. He also wrote against Appolinarios who erroneously taught that Christ did not have a human soul but that His divinity was in lieu of His soul. Additionally Saint Gregory wrote against Emperor Julian the Apostate, his one-time colleague in school. At one tine Saint Gregory had baptized a philosopher named Maximos, and liked him so much that he kept the philosopher in his home, sharing his table with him. However, this Maximos, was as dangerous and cunning as a serpent. After a period of time, through intrigue and bribes, he obtained recognition of some Constantinopolitans as patriarch, in place of Saint Gregory. When some rebuked Gregory for keeping his greatest enemy with him, the saint replied: We are not to blame if we do not discern someone s evil. God alone knows the inner secrets of man. And to us is commanded by law, that with fatherly love, to open our hearts to all who come to us. A non-malevolent man cannot easily understand the malice of a malevolent man. In AD 381, when a debate began regarding his election as archbishop, he withdrew on his own and issued a statement: Those, who deprive us of our archepiscopal throne cannot deprive us of God. After that, he left Constantinople and went to Nazianzus and there lived a life of solitude and prayer, writing worthwhile books. Even though he was in poor health throughout his entire life, nevertheless, Gregory lived to be eighty years old. His relics were later transferred to Rome, and these were transferred to Constantinople in A reliquary containing his head reposes in the Cathedral Church of the Assumption in Moscow. He was, and remains, a great and wonderful light of the Orthodox Church as much by his meekness and purity of character as well as for the unsurpassable depth of his mind. He died in the Lord in the year AD

For old age is not honored for length of time, nor measured by number of years; but understanding is gray hair for men, and a blameless life is ripe old age. There was one who pleased God and was loved by him, and while living among sinners he was taken up. He was caught up lest evil change his understanding or guile deceive his soul. For the fascination of wickedness obscures what is good, and roving desire perverts the innocent mind. Being perfected in a short time, he fulfilled long years; for his soul was pleasing to the Lord, therefore he took him quickly from the midst of wickedness. Yet the peoples saw and did not understand, nor take such a thing to heart, that God s grace and mercy are with his elect, and he watches over his holy ones. Πρόσχωµεν. The mouth of a just man distils wisdom; the lips of men know graces. The mouth of the wise meditates wisdom; justice delivers them from death. When a just man dies hope is not lost; for a just son is born for life, and among his good things he will pluck the fruit of justice. There is light at all times for the just, and they will find grace and glory from the Lord. 7 good, and wisdom will takes its rest in their hearts. The Lord loves holy hearts; while all who are blameless in the way are acceptable to him. The wisdom of the Lord will enlighten the face of the understanding; for she anticipates those who desire her before they know it, and is easily contemplated by those who love her. One who rises for her at dawn will not toil, and one who keeps vigil because of her will be without care. For she goes about seeking those who are worthy of her, and shows itself favorably to those in the ways. Wickedness will never prevail against wisdom. Because of this I too became a lover of her beauty and became her friend, and I sought her out from my youth, and I sought to take her as my bride; because the Master of all things loved her. For she is an initiate of the knowledge of God one who chooses his works. Her toils are virtues; she teaches sobriety and prudence; justice and courage, than which nothing is more useful in human life. Rejoicing forever in the Light of God, you defend the Church of those who venerate you, the Church which you yourself have shaped. With the fire of the Spirit, you burned up the weeds of heresy to be nourished by love of divine wisdom. The whole world glorifies you, O Gregory, blessed Theologian, as the fathers of fathers, the shepherd of shepherds, the light of the priesthood, and the strength of all believers. Your holy lips approached the cup of wisdom, O Gregory, from which you drank deeply of theology, that divine stream from which you helped all believers share in abundance. You blocked the flow of heresies, deadly to souls and blasphemous to God. For the Holy Spirit found in you a helmsman able to steer safely through the fierce blasts of the impious in preaching the consubstantial Trinity.
