We venerate Thine immaculate icon, O Good One, asking the forgiveness of our failings, O Christ our God; for of Thine own will Thou wast well-pleased to ascend the Cross in the flesh, that Thou might deliver from slavery to the enemy those whom Thou hadst fashioned. Wherefore, we cry to Thee thankfully: Thou didst fill all things with joy, O our Savior, when Thou camest to save the world. Ton sinanarhon Logon Patri ke Pnevmati, ton ek Parthenu tekthenta is sotirian imon, animnisomen pisti ke proskinisomen, oti ivthokese sarki, anelthin en to stavro, ke thanaton ipomine, ke egire tus tethneotas, en ti enthoxo Anastasi aftu. Eternal with the Father and the Spirit is the Word, Who of a Virgin was begotten for our salvation. As the faithful we both praise and worship Him, for in the flesh did He consent to ascend unto the Cross, and death did He endure and He raised unto life the dead through His all glorious resurrection. 3 Epistle - St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 11:24-26, 26, Prokeimenon. Mode 4. Daniel 3.26,27 Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our fathers. Verse: For you are just in all you have done. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 11:24-26, B rethren, by faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to share ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets -- who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign enemies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated -- of whom the world was not worthy -- wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. Προκείμενον. 4 G o s p e l - Joh n 1 : A t that time, Jesus decided to go to Galilee. And he found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael, and he said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these." And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. Potluck Patristics Our most recently canonized saint, St. Porphyrios, has his words recorded in a beautiful book entitled Wounded by Love. There are copies of the book in the bookstore for you to buy and join our club. Our next meeting will be on Monday, February 26 at 6pm. As always we will start with a potluck dinner and then we will go into our study.
Sunday of Orthodoxy For more than one hundred years the Church of Christ was troubled by the persecution of the Iconoclasts of evil belief, beginning in the reign of Leo the Isaurian ( ) and ending in the reign of Theophilus ( ). After Theophilus's death, his widow the Empress Theodora (celebrated Feb.11), together with the Patriarch Methodius (June 14), established Orthodoxy anew. This ever-memorable Queen venerated the icon of the Mother of God in the presence of the Patriarch Methodius and the other confessors and righteous men, and openly cried out these holy words: "If anyone does not offer relative worship to the holy icons, not adoring them as though they were gods, but venerating them out of love as images of the archetype, let him be anathema." Then with common prayer and fasting during the whole first week of the Forty-day Fast, she asked God's forgiveness for her husband. After this, on the first Sunday of the Fast, she and her son, Michael the Emperor, made a procession with all the clergy and people and restored the holy icons, and again adorned the Church of Christ with them. This is the holy deed that all we the Orthodox commemorate today, and we call this radiant and venerable day the Sunday of Orthodoxy, that is, the triumph of true doctrine over heresy.
Commemoration of the Restoration of the Holy Icons Procession with the Icons The Apolytikion of the Sunday of Orthodoxy is chanted by all as the procession begins: We worship Your pure image, O Good One, asking forgiveness of our sins, O Christ our God; for of Your own will You were well-pleased to ascend the Cross in the flesh, that You might deliver from slavery to the enemy those whom You had fashioned. Wherefore, we cry to You thankfully: You filled all things with joy, O our Savior, when You came to save the world. At the North side of the church petitions are said for the living: Deacon: Have mercy upon us, O God, according to Your great mercy, we pray to You, hear us and have mercy. Deacon: Further we pray for all pious and Orthodox Christians. Deacon: Again we pray for our Archbishop Demetrios, and for all our brothers and sisters in Christ. Priest: For You are a merciful and loving God, and to You we give glory, to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever and unto the ages of ages. People: Amen. As the procession continues, all sing the Thrice Holy Hymn. At the West side of the church, petitions are said for those who have reposed in the faith: Deacon: Have mercy upon us, O God, according to your great mercy, we pray to You, hear us and have mercy. Deacon: Further we pray for the blessed memory and eternal repose of Your departed servants: emperors, patriarchs, hierarchs, priests, hieromonks, deacons, monks, nuns, and all departed faithful and Orthodox Christians here and everywhere who have been laid to pious rest: our fathers, forefathers, parents, brothers, sisters, spouses, children, relatives, and friends. People: May their memory be eternal. (3) Priest: For You are the resurrection, the life, and the repose of Your departed servants, Christ our God, and to You we give glory, with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy and life-giving Spirit, now and forever and unto the ages of ages. People: Amen. As the procession continues, all sing the Thrice Holy Hymn. At the South side of the church, petitions are said for the community:
Deacon: Have mercy on us, O God, according to Your great mercy, we pray to You, hear us and have mercy. Deacon: Further we pray for mercy, life, peace, health, salvation, visitation, forgiveness and remission of the sins of the servants of God, all pious and Orthodox Christians who dwell in this city, the parishioners, parish council, contributors, and benefactors of this holy church. Deacon: Further we pray for those who bear offerings, those who do good works, in this holy and venerable church, those who labor, those who sing, and all here present who await Your great and abundant mercy. Priest: For you are a merciful and loving God, and to You we give glory, to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever and unto the ages of ages. People: Amen. As the procession continues, all sing the Thrice Holy Hymn. At the East side of the church (on the solea), petitions are said for the world: Deacon: Have mercy on us, O God, according to Your great mercy, we pray to You, hear us and have mercy. Deacon: Again we pray for our country, our President, all civil authorities and those in public service. Deacon: Further we pray for the protection of this holy church, this city, and every city and town from violence and pestilence, famine and earthquake, flood and fire, from the sword and enemy invasion, civil strive, and sudden death; that our good and loving God will be merciful and gracious and open to our entreaties, to turn back all violence and evil that arises against us, and deliver us from His impending righteous chastisement and be merciful to us. Deacon: Further we pray that the Lord our God will hear the voice of the prayer of us sinners and will have mercy on us. Priest: Hear us, O God, our Redeemer, the hope of all, at the ends of the earth or far away at sea, and show mercy; show mercy, O Master, towards our sins and have mercy on us. For You are a merciful and loving God, and to You we give glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever and unto the ages of ages. People: Amen.
The passage from the Synodikon of the Seventh Ecumenical Council is read in unison by all. As the Prophets beheld, As the Apostles taught, As the Church received, As the Teachers dogmatized, As the Universe agreed, As Grace illumined, As the Truth revealed, As falsehood passed away, As Wisdom presented, As Christ awarded, Thus we declare, Thus we assert, Thus we proclaim Christ our true God and honor His saints, In words, In writings, In thoughts, In sacrifices, In churches, In holy icons. On the one hand, worshipping and reverencing Christ as God and Lord. And on the other hand, honoring and venerating His Saints as true servants of the same Lord. This is the Faith of the Apostles. This is the Faith of the Fathers. This is the Faith of the Orthodox. This is the Faith which has established the Universe. Priest: Therefore, with brotherly love, we praise these preachers of piety, for the glory and honor of their own pious struggles for the Faith, and we say: Eternal be the memory of the champions of Orthodoxy, pious Emperors, most-holy Patriarchs, Hierarchs, Teachers, Martyrs, and Confessors. People: May their memory be eternal. (3) Priest: Let us entreat God, that we may be instructed and strengthened by the trials and struggles of these Saints, which they endured for the faith, even unto death, and by their teachings, entreating them that we may imitate their godly life unto the end. May we be deemed worthy of obtaining our requests through the mercy and grace of the Great and First Archpriest, Christ our God, through the intercessions of our glorious Lady, the Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary, of the divine Angels, and of all the Saints. People: Amen. Priest: Who is so great a god as our God? You are the God alone who works wonders. Cantor: (Verse): You have revealed Your power among the people. Who is so great a god as our God? You are the God alone who works wonders. Cantor: (Verse): I remembered the deeds of the Lord. Who is so great a god as our God? You are the God alone who works wonders.

IV NEXT BY IONIAN VILLAGE AND LEADERSHIP 100 AN EXCITING NEW MINISTRY FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS AND YOUNG ADULTS NEW YORK IV Next is an exciting new ministry of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America for college students and Young Adults offered by Ionian Village and Leadership 100. Q: I graduated from GOYA, I m in college, I m too old to go to camp, I have to work this summer...what s next for me? A: IV Next is what s next. Working together with and funded by a Leadership 100 grant, IV Next will focus on the influential excursions of the classic Ionian Village program and the future of the participants by providing access to mentors from Leadership 100. Dozens of colleges and universities offer study abroad programs in Greece, and many of the programs of our own diaspora offer similar opportunities. However, IV Next is the only travel-based program for young adults, that has our Greek Orthodox Faith as a core tenet of the program. Only IV Next combines professional development, international travel, and the Orthodox Faith into one all-inclusive program. The twelve-day itinerary includes time at the historic Ionian Village campgrounds, as well as excursions to the cornerstones of the travel program. Throughout the program, participants will engage in discussions about career goals, the financial realities of being a millennial, and how to successfully incorporate our Orthodox Faith into everyday business life. These conversations and sessions will provide not only a more solid understanding of vocation, but also serve as an excellent inter-community networking opportunity. Through a varied schedule that includes churches and monasteries, meetings with political and religious figures, and museums and archaeological sites, IV Next participants will become intimately familiar with all aspects of Greece, her culture and people. Participants of the IV Next program will be selected by filling out an online application and interviewing with a member of the selection committee. Participants will be required to get themselves to JFK for departure to Greece. Full participation and all costs associated with this program (flight to and from Greece, meals, travel, lodging) are subsidized through a generous grant from Leadership 100. Applications for IV Next are due March 1st, To be a part of the conversation and for more information, visit ionianvillage.org/next. Bringing Your Brokenness Open to individuals and couples, meetings will be held bi-monthly on Thursday evenings at 6:30pm in the church. We are studying book Truly Human: Recovering Your Humanity in a Broken World by Kevin Scherer, which is available in our bookstore. Our goal is to provide a loving Orthodox Christian atmosphere for support, accountability, study, and discussion, with the ultimate goal of restoring our souls and bodies to the image and likeness of God. Our next meeting will be March 1. If you have questions please contact Fr. Vasileios, or Brian Holland at brianholland5143@yahoo.com or Susan Holland at misssoup2002@yahoo.com
