THIRD ANNUAL FAMILY GRAS TODAY The entire Cathedral family is invited to the 3rd Annual Family Gras Potluck Luncheon today, Sunday, January 21, after church services. Participating families were asked to bring New Orleans style dishes to share with other attendees. The event will include the shoe box Mardi Gras float competition, a photo booth, a second line parade, and the support the troops craft for decorating military care package boxes. THREE ASSEMBLY MEETINGS ON JANUARY 28 The first 2018 General Assembly will be held in the Hellenic Cultural Center SUNDAY, JANUARY 28, 2018, immediately following Divine Liturgy. The agenda will include discussion and vote on the proposed budget for 2018, as well as regular business items. Two Special General Assemblies will precede the General Assembly. The purpose of the first Special General Assembly is to vote whether to authorize the sale of the Veterans Memorial Boulevard lots, located in Kenner, Louisiana, for an amount of $1,250,000. The second Special General Assembly will be held to consider a by-law change for elections. All members in Good Standing are encouraged to attend all three important meetings STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY The Stewardship Committee is designating Sunday, January 28, as Stewardship Sunday. Parishioners are asked to be mindful of the great gifts that the Lord has bestowed upon them and to be generous in their gift to the Church, which needs support from everyone. An information table will be set up in the Hellenic Cultural Center during the coffee hour and before the General Assembly. Additional stewardship packets and information will be available, and Stewardship Committee members will answer your questions about this ministry. During the month of January, you may place your stewardship envelope in the tray or mail it to the office. Stewards with outstanding balances are kindly reminded to complete their 2017 pledges as soon as possible or to contact the Cathedral office, if they cannot.

2 HEALTH AND WELLNESS STUDY IN GREECE Southeastern Louisiana University's College of Nursing and Health Sciences is sponsoring a Health and Wellness Study in Greece June 2-20, Participants will study health and health care of Greeks and Americans. The program, which is offered with or without credit, will include travel to Athens, Sounion, Aidipsos, Santorini, Delphi, and Arachova. The $3,700 expenditure includes all lodging with breakfast and travel in Greece, as well as class instruction. International flight and other food are not covered. Debbie and Vasili Funti will sponsor the luncheon in honor of Sophie Hadjes and Ruth Ann and Jimmy Menutis. Philoptochos members invite all seniors to join in the festive Mardi Gras party and luncheon and look forward to seeing them then. THE APOKRIATIKO GLENDI The Hellenic Dancers of New Orleans will host The Apokriatiko Glendi this Saturday, January 27, 2018, at 6:00 pm in the Hellenic Cultural Center. Message from Father George ON A GODLY LIFE In today s Epistle reading, the Holy Apostle Paul is clearly giving instruction to a newly ordained Timothy. The mentioning of the laying on of hands by the elders refers to an ordination as we know it in the Church even to this day. Timothy was being prepared to serve the Christian community as Saint Paul exhorts him to not neglect the gift that was mystically conferred upon him through the laying on of hands. Although Saint Paul specifically addresses the newly ordained clergyman, the opening phrase is a powerful reminder to all of us, who would claim to be a Christian. In the beginning of today s Epistle reading, we see the admonition: For to this end we toil and strive because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. Biblical scholars suggest that this refers to the preceding line which does not actually appear in today s lectionary reading. The line I refer to is: (1 Timothy 4:7-8) Have nothing to do with godless and silly myths. Train yourself in godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. Accordingly, this is the saying that is sure and worthy of full acceptance and reminds us to focus on Godliness and to live a Godly life. From time to time, as Orthodox Christians, we are encouraged to evaluate our lives and actions as we prepare to participate in the Sacrament of Penance and Confession. How are we doing in the area of Godliness? Saint Paul s instruction to the new clergyman Timothy is just as important in our lives as well. Godliness is of value in every way because it helps to prepare us in our Spiritual Journey to Christ and because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. Ultimately for Christians, we as living beings are encouraged to have a relationship with the Living God. God is kind by nature and always provides for our good and, when we ask Him for something, He will provide it, as long as it is for our good. Whatever is necessary for the salvation of our soul and for the maintenance of our physical existence, God will provide it in abundance, and we will have His blessing. [Saint Paisios of Mount Athos]

Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Till I come, attend to the public reading of scripture, to preaching, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophetic utterance when the council of elders laid their hands upon you. THE GOSPEL Luke 19:1-10 At that time, Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zacchaeus; he was a chief collector, and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost.
