Ο ΑΠΟΣΤΟΛΟΣ Στα Νεα Ελληνικα Πρὸς Ἑβραίους 11:9-10, Χαρις εις αυτήν την πίστιν του κατώκησεν εις την γην, που του είχε υποσχεθή ο Θεός, σαν εις ξένην περιοχήν και έζησε μέσα εις σκηνάς μαζή με τον Ισαάκ και τον Ιακώβ, που ήσαν συγκληρονόμοι της ιδίας υποσχέσεως του Θεού. Και τούτο, διότι επερίμενε με πίστιν και ελπίδα ακλόνητον την επουράνιον πόλιν, με τα αδιάσειστα και αιώνια θεμέλια της, της οποίας τεχνίτης και δημιουργός είναι ο ίδιος ο Θεός. Και τι να διηγούμαι ακόμη; Θα σταματήσω, διότι δεν θα με πάρη ο χρόνος, να διηγηθώ δια τον Γεδεών, τον Βαράκ και τον Σαμψών και τον Ιεφθάε, δια τον Δαυίδ και τον Σαμουήλ και τους προφήτας. Αυρτοί, χάρις εις την πίστιν των, ηγωνίσθησαν και κατενίκησαν βασίλεια, ήσκησαν δικαιοσύνην, επέτυχαν την πραγματοποίησιν των υποσχέσεων του Θεού, έφραξαν τα στόματα των αγρίων λεόντων, όπως ο Δανιήλ, έσβησαν την φοβεράν δύναμιν της φωτιάς, όπως οι τρεις παίδες, διέφυγαν τον κίνδυνον να σφαγούν με μαχαίρια, όπως ο Ηλίας, εδυναμώθησαν και έγιναν καλά από αρρώστιες, ανεδείχθησαν κραταιοί και δυνατοί στον πόλεμον, έκαμψαν και έτρεψαν εις φυγήν πολυάριθμα στρατεύματα ξένων εχθρών. Μερικές γυναίκες, χάρις εις αυτήν την πίστιν, επήραν πάλιν ζωντανούς, δια της αναστάσεως τους νεκρούς των. Αλλοι δε εδέθησαν στο τύμπανον, στο φοβερά βασανιστικόν εκείνον όργανον, χωρίς να δεχθούν την απελευθέρωσιν, που τους επρότειναν οι βασανισταί των, εάν ηρνούντο την πίστιν των, και υπέμειναν το φοβερόν μαρτύριον μέχρι θανάτου, δια να επιτύχουν και πάρουν ανάστασιν ασυγκρίτως καλυτέραν από την παρούσαν ζωήν. Αλλοι δε εδοκίμασαν εμπαιγμούς και μαστιγώσεις, ακόμη δε δεσμά και φυλακήν. Ελιθοβολήθησαν, επριονίσθησαν, επέρασαν μέσα από πολλούς πειρασμούς, απέθαναν σφαγέντες με μάχαιραν, περιήρχοντο εδώ και εκεί φορούντες, αντί για ενδύματα, προβιές και δέρματα γιδιών, στερούμενοι, θλιβόμενοι, υποβαλλόμενοι εις πολλάς κακουχίας. Τετοιους αγίους δεν ήτο άξιος να τους έχη ο αμαρτωλός κόσμος. Επεριπλανώντο εις τις ερημίες, εις τα όρη, εις τα σπήλαια, εις τις τρύπες της γης. Και όλοι αυτοί, μολονότι έλαβαν την καλήν και τιμίαν μαρτυρίαν, ότι ευηρέστησαν στον Θεόν χάρις εις την πίστιν των, δεν απήλαυσαν πλήρως την υπόσχεσιν της λυτρώσεως και της ουρανίου βασιλείας. Διότι ο Θεός επρόβλεψε δι' ημάς κάτι καλύτερον δηλαδή να μη απολαύσουν αυτοί πλήρη την τελείωσιν και την μακαριότητα χωρίς ημάς (αλλ' όλοι μαζή σαν ένα πνευματικόν σώμα να απολαύσωμεν κατά την δευτέραν παρυσίαν την μακαριότητα της βασιλείας των ουρανών). ΤΗΕ EPISTLE St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 11:9-10; BRETHREN, by faith Abraham sojourned in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city which has foundation, whose builder and maker is God. And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets - who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were killed with 4

5 the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated - of whom the world was not worthy - wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. Ολαι λοιπόν αι γενεαί από τον Αβραάμ μέχρι του Δαυίδ είναι γενεαί δεκατέσσαρες και από Δαυίδ μέχρι της μετοικεσίας των Ιουδαίων ως αιχμαλώτων εις την Βαβυλώνα είναι γενεαί δεκατέσσαρες και από της μετοικεσίας εις την Βαβυλώνα μέχρι των ημερών του Χριστού γενεαί πάλιν δεκατέσσαρες. Η δε γέννησις του Ιησού Χριστού έγινε κατά τον ακόλουθον υπερφυσικόν τρόπον. Οταν δηλαδή εμνηστεύθη η μήτηρ αυτού Μαρία με τον Ιωσήφ, χωρίς να συνοικήσουν ως σύζυγοι, ευρέθη έγκυος από την δημιουργικήν ενέργειαν του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Ο δε Ιωσήφ, ο μνηστήρ αυτής, όταν αντελήφθη την εγκυμοσύνην αυτής, επήρε την απόφασιν να διαλύση την μνηστείαν. Επειδή όμως ήτο ενάρετος και εύσπλαγχνος δεν ηθέλησε να την διαπομπεύση δημοσία, αλλ'εσκέφθη να την διώξη μυστικά χωρίς να ανακοινώση εις κανένα τας υποψίας του. Ενώ δε αυτά είχε στον νουν, ιδού ένας άγγελος του Κυρίου παρουσιάσθη στο όνειρόν του και του είπεν Ιωσήφ, απόγονε του Δαυΐδ, μη διστάσης, να παραλάβης στον οίκον σου την Μαριάμ, την αγνήν και πιστήν μνηστή σου, διότι το παιδίον που κυοφορείται έντος αυτής έχει συλληφθή από την δημιουργικήν ενέργειαν του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Θα γεννήση δε υιόν, και συ (ο οποίος σύμφωνα με τον νόμον θεωρείσαι προστάτης και πατέρας του) θα το ονομάσης Ιησούν (δηλαδή Θεόν-Σωτήρα) διότι αυτός θα σώση πράγματι τον λαόν του από τας αμαρτίας αυτών. Και όλον αυτό το θαυμαστόν και μοναδικόν γεγονός έγινε, δια να πραγματοποιηθή και επαληθεύση αυτό, που είχε λεχθή από τον Κυριον δια του προφήτου Ησαΐου Ιδού η αγνή και άμωμος παρθένος θα συλλάβη και θα γεννήση υιόν, χωρίς να γνωρίση άνδρα, και θα ονομάσουν αυτόν Εμμανουήλ, όνομα που σημαίνει Ο Θεός είναι μαζή μας. Αμέσως λοιπόν μόλις εσηκώθη από τον ύπνον ο Ιωσήφ, έκαμε όπως τον είχε διατάξει ο άγγελος του Κυρίου και παρέλαβε στον οίκον του με εμπιστοσύνην και σεβασμόν την μνηστήν του. Και ποτέ δεν εγνώρισεν αυτήν ως σύζυγον ούτε και όταν εγέννησεν αυτή τον πρώτον και μοναδικόν υιόν της ούτε και μετά ταύτα. Και εκάλεσεν ο Ιωσήφ το όνομα του παιδίου Ιησούν. So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel"(which means, God with us). 10 SAINTS AND FEASTS Η ΓΕΝΝΗΣΗ ΤΟΥ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥ Αυτή τη μέρα η αγία Εκκλησία μας γιορτάζει το μεγάλο και ανερμήνευτο γεγονός της κατά σάρκα γεννήσεως του Υιού και Λόγου του Θεού από την Υπεραγία Θεοτόκο. Μετά τον Ευαγγελισμό της Παρθένου Μαρίας από τον αρχάγγελο Γαβριήλ και ενώ πλησίαζε ο καιρός να τελειώσουν οι εννιά μήνες από την υπερφυσική σύλληψη του Χριστού στην παρθενική της μήτρα, ο Καίσαρ Αύγουστος διέταξε απογραφή του πληθυσμού του ρωμαϊκού κράτους. Τότε ο Ιωσήφ μαζί με τη Θεοτόκο, ξεκίνησαν για τη Βηθλεέμ, για να απογραφούν εκεί. Επειδή όμως είχε πλησιάσει ο καιρός να γεννήσει η Παρθένος και δεν έβρισκαν κατοικία να καταλύσουν, διότι είχε μαζευτεί πολύς λαός στη Βηθλεέμ, μπήκαν σε ένα φτωχικό σπήλαιο. Εκεί η Θεοτόκος γέννησε τον Κύριο Ιησού Χριστό και σπαργάνωσε σαν βρέφος τον Κτίστη των απάντων. Έπειτα Τον έβαλε επάνω στη φάτνη των αλόγων ζώων, διότι "έμελλε να ελευθέρωση ημάς από την αλογίαν", όπως χαρακτηριστικά γράφει ο Άγιος Νικόδημος ο Αγιορείτης. Από τότε, όλοι οι πιστοί χριστιανοί με χαρά ψάλλουν τον ύμνο των αγγέλων εκείνης της νύκτας: "Δόξα εν υψίστοις Θεώ και επί γης ειρήνη, εν ανθρώποις ευδοκία". Ευαγγέλιο Λουκά, Β' Δόξα δηλαδή, ας είναι στο θεό, που βρίσκεται στα ύψιστα μέρη του ουρανού και στη γη ολόκληρη, που είναι ταραγμένη από την αμαρτία ας βασιλεύσει η θεία ειρήνη, διότι ο Θεός έδειξε την αγάπη Του στους ανθρώπους με την ενανθρώπηση του Υιού Του. Να σημειώσουμε εδώ, ότι η γιορτή των Χριστουγέννων καθιερώθηκε για πρώτη φορά την 25η Δεκεμβρίου του 397 επί πατριαρχείας Αγ. Ιωάννου του Χρυσοστόμου. Κατ' άλλους ο πατριάρχης Ιεροσολύμων Ιουβενάλιος, χώρισε τις δύο γιορτές των Φώτων και των Χριστουγέννων, οι οποίες παλιότερα γίνονταν την ίδια μέρα, δηλαδή την 6η Ιανουαρίου. 10

11 SAINTS AND FEASTS The Nativity of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ The incomprehensible and inexplicable Nativity of Christ came to pass when Herod the Great was reigning in Judea; the latter was an Ascalonite on his fathers's side and an Idumean on his mother's. He was in every way foreign to the royal line of David; rather, he had received his authority from the Roman emperors, and had ruled tyrannically over the Jewish people for some thirty-three years. The tribe of Judah, which had reigned of old, was de- prived of its rights and stripped of all rule and authori- ty. Such was the condition of the Jews when the awaited Messiah was born, and truly thus was fulfilled the prophecy which the Patriarch Jacob had spoken 1,807 years before: "A ruler shall not fail from Judah, nor a prince from his loins, until there come the things stored up for him; and he is the expectation of the nations" (Gen.49:10). Thus, our Saviour was born in Bethlehem, a city of Judea, whither Joseph had come from Nazareth of Galilee, taking Mary his betrothed, who was great with child, that, according to the decree issued in those days by the Emperor Augustus, they might be registered in the census of those subject to Rome. Therefore, when the time came for the Virgin to give birth, and since because of the great multitude there was no place in the inn, the Virgin's circumstace constrained them to enter a cave which was near Bethlehem. Having as shelter a stable of irrational beasts, she gave birth there, and swaddled the Infant and laid Him in the manger (Luke 2:1-7). From this, the tradition has come down to us that when Christ was born He lay between two animals, an ox and an ass, that the words of the Prophets might be fulfilled: "Between two living creatures shalt Thou be known" (Abbacum 3:2), and "The ox knoweth his owner and the ass his master's crib" (Esaias 1: 3). But while the earth gave the new-born Saviour such a humble reception, Heaven on high celebrated majestically His world-saving coming. A wondrous star, shining with uncommon brightness and following a strange course, led Magi from the East to Bethlehem to worship the new-born King. Certain shepherds who were in the area of Bethlehem, who kept watch while tending their sheep, were suddenly surrounded by an extraordinary light, and they saw before them an Angel who proclaimed to them the good tidings of the Lord's joyous Nativity. And straightway, together with this Angel, they beheld and heard a whole host of the Heavenly Powers praising God and saying: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will towards men" (Luke 2:8-14). 11

12 18 Year Old Mute Spoke for First Time Before the Icon of Panagia Gorgoepikoos By Elias Proufas December 12, 2016 The incident happened just ten days ago at the Holy Monastery of Docheiariou in Mount Athos, and it was told to me yesterday evening by a Hieromonk who was present as a witness of this miraculous event, although he mentioned it publicly last week at a religious event in Thessaloniki. Inside her home, at the Holy Monastery of Docheiariou in Mount Athos, where daily the revered Abbot Elder Gregory with the brotherhood of the monastery chant the Supplication Canon to her grace and commemorate hundreds of names on behalf of the health of the living and the repose of the dead, another one of our fellow men was praying in her chapel where he received in actual- ity the grace of the Panagia Gor- goepikoos, who quickly and obe- diently listens and has mercy on all who reverently call upon her with faith. According to this witness, a young man from Skopje, who is 18 years old from the city of Stromnitsa in the neighboring country, who had problems speak- ing, went to the Holy Monastery of Docheiariou to venerate the mi- raculous icon of Panagia Gor- goepikoos. He had come with a relative from Thessaloniki who was speaking about this monastery and icon to his family. 13 What Does Love Mean? By Kelly McFadden Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4:8-10 A group of 4-to-8 year-olds were asked the question, What does love mean? As usual with children, the answers often offer wisdom. Bobby age 7 said this, Love is what s in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen. God s love expresses itself to us in innumerable and immeasurable ways. He is love, the only true and pure essence of it. God most clearly expressed His love when He sent His Son to be our Redeemer. This Christmas, take time to love as God loves you: sacrificially, humbly, faithfully and joyfully. And as 7-year-old Bobby said, as you gather with your family this holiday, take time to push aside the hustle and bustle of the season to listen closely. For the greatest gift was given in Bethlehem. I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior yes, the Messiah, the Lord has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! (Luke 2:10-12) In the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13 is known as the love chapter. Someone has created a special Christmas version (author unknown) of this chapter. I share it here, as it provides practical insight into how we can love as God loves, specifically at Christmastime. If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls, but do not show love to my family, I m just a decorator. If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my family, I m just another cook. If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home and give all that I have to charity, but do not show love to my family, it profits me nothing. If I trim the tree with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, attend a myriad of holiday parties and sing in the choir s cantata but do not focus on my love for Christ, I have missed the point. Love stops the cooking to hug the child. Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the husband. Love is kind, though harried and tired. Love doesn t envy another s home that has coordinated Christmas china and table linens. Love doesn t yell at the kids to get out of the way, but is thankful they are there to be in the way. Love doesn t give only to those who are able to give in return but rejoices in giving to those who can t. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. Video games will break, pearl necklaces will be lost, golf clubs will rust, but giving the gift of love will endure. GOING DEEPER: 1. Write down three tangible ways you can actively love those around you this Christmas. 2. As you open presents this Christmas, take a moment to halt the ripping of paper and encourage your family to think about the incredible Gift we celebrate each Christmas. 15 Christmas: Survive or Celebrate? By Doug Fields After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. All who heard the shepherds story were astonished The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had seen and heard. Luke 2:17-18, 20 (NLT) When I was a child, it seemed like forever for the next Christmas to get here. Now, as an adult, when Christmas approaches, it seems like I just finished last year s Christmas activities. Actually, the truth is, I just finished paying for last year s Christmas activities. So, now it s Christmastime again. There s tension in my home because I am the only one of the five in my family who doesn t love all the decorating, the music and the lights. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I m the one who has to do all the actual work. I m the one who has to survive the black widows in the attic getting everything out to decorate. Then, there are those long green plant ropes, whatever you call them, but I m the one who has to hang them up everywhere. And, there are the lights strings and strings of them enough to light up a small town but of course, aren t working and I only discover this until after I spend hours installing them on the house. I also experience Christmas shopping tension. Am I the only one who hates Christmas shopping? For me, it s not the actual shopping that I hate, but it s the crowds. I don t want to navigate through crowds. I don t want to shop in crowds. I don t want to stand in line with crowds. They make me feel, well, uh, crowded. Bah humbug! For me, survive is the operative word that describes my life for much of the Christmas season. I m guessing that I m not alone, that this strikes a familiar chord with many. Evaluating my overall Grinch-ness, I find myself too focused on surviving the tension surrounding Christmas, rather than celebrating Jesus. When I go into survival mode, I overlook and forget about the Christ of Christmas. When I m in celebration mode, I focus on Him. I want to snap out of survival mode and move to celebration. I only have to look as far as the Christmas narrative to see celebration at work in the lives of lowly shepherds. For them, there was something about Jesus that triggered absolute joy within their souls. They ran to see Him! And, when they had left Jesus, they told everyone about Him and celebrated! I want to be like them! Do you need some reasons for celebrating Jesus? Here are some that can help you move from survival to celebration: We can celebrate because Jesus was born to save us. Because of Jesus, we can celebrate that we don t have to pay for the sickness of our sins. Because of Jesus, we can celebrate that we have God s presence in our lives and we have access to His power. Because of Jesus, we can celebrate that we have a place waiting for us in heaven. Because of Jesus, we can celebrate that while we re living here we can keep growing to be more like Him. It s Christmastime! Life s too short to make surviving the season our goal. Get on with the serious business of celebrating Jesus! He is worth celebrating 365 days a year! Everyday can be like Christmas! (Although I have a hunch that my wife won t agree with my idea to keep the decorations up year -round.) GOING DEEPER: 1.
