Ανάγν.: Εβρ. 11, 9-10,32-40 Με πίστη εγκαταστάθηκε στη γη που του υποσχέθηκε ο Θεός, ξένος σε άγνωστη χώρα, ζώντας σε σκηνές με τον Ισαάκ και τον Ιακώβ, που κι αυτοί ήταν κληρονόμοι της ίδιας υπόσχεσης. Κι αυτό, γιατί περίμενε την πόλη που θα είχε στέρεα θεμέλια και που αρχιτέκτονας και δημιουργός θα ήταν ο Θεός. Χρειάζεται να συνεχίσω; Δεν θα με πάρει ο χρόνος να διηγηθώ για το Γεδεών, το Βαράκ, το Σαμψών, τον Ιεφθάε, το Δαυίδ,, το Σαμουήλ και τους προφήτες. Με την πίστη κατατρόπωσαν την βασιλεία, επέβαλαν το δίκαιο, πέτυχαν την πραγματοποίηση των υποσχέσεων του Θεού, έφραξαν στόματα λεόντων, έσβησαν τη δύναμη της φωτιάς, διέφυγαν τη σφαγή,έγιναν από αδύνατοι ισχυροί, ανδείχτηκαν ήρωες στον πόλεμο, έτρεψαν σε φυγή εχθρικά στρατεύματα, γυναίκες ξαναπήραν πίσω στη ζωή τους ανθρώπους τους, κι άλλοι βασανίστηκαν στο θάνατο,χωρίς να δεχτούν την απελευθέρωσή τους, γιατί πίστευαν ότι μπορούσαν να αναστηθούν σε μια καλύτερη ζωη. Άλλοι δοκίμασαν εξευτελισμούς και μαστιγώσεις, ακόμη και δεσμά και φυλακίσεις. Λιθοβολήθηκαν, πριονίστηκαν, πέρασαν δοκιμασίες, θανατώθηκαν με μάχαιρα, περιπλανήθηκαν ντυμένοι με προβιές και κατσικίσια δέρματα, έζησαν σε στερήσεις, υπέφεραν καταπιέσεις, θλίψεις και κακουχίες, κόσμος δεν ήταν άξιος να χει τέτοιους ανθρώπους,πλανήθηκαν σε ερημιές και βουνά,σε σπηλιές και σε τρύπες της γης. Όλοι η παραπάνω, παρά την καλή μαρτυρία της πίστης τους, δεν πήραν ότι τους υποσχέθηκε ο Θεός, ο οποίος είχε προβλέψει καλύτερο για μας, έτσι ώστε να μη φτάσουν εκείνοι στην τελειότητα χωρίς εμάς. Ο Αβραάμ εγέννησε τον Ισαάκ, ο Ισαάκ εγέννησε τον Ιακώβ, ο Ιακώβ εγέννησε τον Ιούδα και τους αδελφούς του. Ο Ιούδας εγέννησε τον Φαρές και τον Ζαρά με τη Θάμαρ. Από τη Μαρία γεννήθηκε ο Ιησούς, ο λεγόμενος Χριστός. Από τον Αβραάμ ως τον Δαβίδ μεσολαβούν δεκατέσσερις γενιές το ίδιο κι από τον Δαβίδ ως την αιχμαλωσία στη Βαβυλώνα, καθώς κι από την αιχμαλωσία στη Βαβυλώνα ως το Χριστό. Η γέννηση του Ιησού Χριστού έγινε ως εξής: Η μητέρα του, η Μαρία, αρραβωνιάστηκε με τον Ιωσήφ. Προτού όμως συνευρεθούν, έμεινε έγκυος με τη δύναμη του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Ο μνηστήρας της ο Ιωσήφ, επειδή ήταν ευσεβής και δεν ήθελε να τη διαπομπεύσει, αποφάσισε να διαλύσει τον αρραβώνα, χωρίς την επίσημη διαδικασία. Όταν όμως κατέληξε σ αυτή τη σκέψη, του εμφανίστηκε στον ύπνο του ένας άγγελος σταλμένος από τον Θεό και του είπε: «Ιωσήφ, απόγονε του Δαβίδ, μη διστάσεις να πάρεις στο σπίτι σου τη Μαριάμ, τη γυναίκα σου, γιατί το παιδί που περιμένει προέρχεται από το Άγιο Πνεύμα. Θα γεννήσει γιο, και θα του δώσεις το όνομα Ιησούς, γιατί αυτός θα σώσει το λαό του από τις αμαρτίες τους». Με όλα αυτά που έγιναν, εκπληρώθηκε ο λόγος του Κυρίου, που είχε πει ο προφήτης: Να, η παρθένος θα μείνει έγκυος και θα γεννήσει γιο, και θα του δώσουν το όνομα Εμμανουήλ, που σημαίνει, ο Θεός είναι μαζί μας. Όταν ξύπνησε ο Ιωσήφ, έκανε όπως τον πρόσταξε ο άγγελος του Κυρίου και πήρε στο σπίτι του τη Μαρία τη γυναίκα του. Και δεν είχε συζυγικές σχέσεις μαζί της ωσότου γέννησε το γιο της τον πρωτότοκο και του έδωσε το όνομα Ιησούς. So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel"(which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife, but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus. Αιωνία η μνήμη αυτών! 5

6 Κυριακή προ Χριστού Γεννήσεως Η σημερινή Κυριακή που προηγείται των Χριστουγέννων ονομάζεται Κυριακή της προ Χριστού γεννήσεως. Αποτελεί την κορύφωση της προετοιμασίας και τον προάγγελο της μεγάλης εορτής. Σύμφωνα με το συναξάρι της ημέρας, σήμερα επιτελούμε την μνήμη όλων εκείνων που ευαρέστησαν το Θεό από τον Αδάμ μέχρι και τον μνήστορα Ιωσήφ. Το αποστολικό μας ανάγνωσμα προέρχεται από την προς Εβραίους επιστολή του Αποστόλου Παύλου. Πρόκειται για την περικοπή όπου εξαίρεται η πίστη του πατριάρχη Αβραάμ, καθώς και τα κατορθώματα άλλων ανδρών της Παλιάς Διαθήκης.Ειδικά οι δυο πρώτοι στίχοι μιλούν για τον πατριάρχη Αβραάμ. Ο Αβραάμ δεν είναι μόνο ο γενάρχης αλλά και θεμελιωτής του Ισραήλ. Γίνεται αναφορά στην απόλυτη πίστη και στην τυφλή εμπιστοσύνη στο Θεό. Πράγματι όταν ο Θεός κάλεσε τον Αβραάμ να φύγει από τη πατρική του γη και την οικογένεια του και να πάει να κατοικήσει εκεί που θα του υπεδείκνυε ο ίδιος ο Θεός, ο Αβραάμ δεν ζήτησε να μάθει ποιος θα ήταν ο νέος τόπος της κατοικίας του. Με την πίστη του ο Αβραάμ υπάκουσε στον Θεό και έφυγε από το σπίτι του χωρίς να γνωρίζει που πήγαινε. Ο συγγραφέας της προς Εβραίους επιστολής σχολιάζει για τον Αβραάμ : Πίστει παρώκτησεν εις την γην της επαγγελίας ως αλλότριαν, εν σκηναίς κατοικήσας μετά Ισαάκ και Ιακώβ συγκληρονόμων της επαγγελίας της αυτής εξεδέχετο γαρ τους θεμελίους έχουσαν πόλιν, ης τεχνίτης και δημιουργός ο Θεός.(11,9-10). Ο Θεός υπέδειξε στον Αβραάμ να εγκαταλείψει τη χώρα του, το σπίτι του πατέρα του και να πάει να κατοικήσει εκεί όπου θα του υπεδείκνυε ο ίδιο ο Θεός. Τότε ο Αβραάμ έλαβε και την υπόσχεση από τον Θεό ότι θα ανεδείκνυε τον εκλεκτό λαό από το γένος του Αβραάμ (Γεν.12,1-3).Ο Αβραάμ υπακούοντας στην υπόδειξη του Θεού, πήγε και κατοίκησε στην χώρα όπου του υπέδειξε ο Θεός.Όμως δεν θεώρησε ως δική του τη γη αυτή. Επειδή όμως έκρινε ότι ήταν προσωρινή η διαμονή του στη χώρα εκείνη κατοίκησε σε σκηνές με την οικογένεια του. Η σκηνή φανερώνει την προσωρινότητα και τη μεταβατικότητα από μια κατάσταση σε άλλη. Ο Αβραάμ ανέμενε τη πόλη που θα είχε σταθερά θεμέλια και που δημιουργός θα ήταν ο Θεός. Γίνεται αναφορά για την ουράνια Ιερουσαλήμ (Εβρ.12,2). Στο σημείο αυτό μπορούμε να πούμε ότι ο Αβραάμ ανέμενε την πλήρωση των επαγγελιών, των υποσχέσεων του Θεού και την έλευση του Μεσσία Ιησού Χριστού στον οποίο ανήκει η ουράνια και αιώνια Ιερουσαλήμ. Και έτσι πάνω σ αυτή τη πίστη του οικοδομήθηκε ολόκληρη η μετέπειτα συμπεριφορά του. Ωστόσο η πίστη συνίσταται στην αποδοχή αυτών που αποκαλύπτει ο Θεός. Είναι μια στάση απόλυτης εμπιστοσύνης στον Θεό, ο οποίος έχει στείλει τον Υιό του Ιησού Χριστού στον κόσμο. Η πίστη αυτή εκδηλώνεται σε διάφορους τομείς της σχέσεως του ανθρώπου με το Θεό. Παράλληλα σε σχέση με τη σωτηρία η πίστη είναι πράξη προσωπικής εμπιστοσύνης στον Ιησού Χριστό, «ος παρεδόθη δια τα παραπτώματα ημών και ηγέρθη δια τη δικαίωσιν ημών(ρωμ.4,25), λέγει ο Απ. Παύλος. Η πίστη η οποία εκδηλώνεται στην προσευχή είναι πράξη εμπιστοσύνης και θάρρους απέναντι στο Θεό. Έτσι αν ζητήσουμε κάτι σύμφωνα με το θέλημα του μας ακούει. Έτσι γνωρίζοντας ότι ακούει τα αιτήματα μας, έχουμε τη βεβαιότητα ότι θα εκπληρωθούν.(α Ιωανν.5,14-15). Με την πίστη καταλαβαίνουμε ότι ο Θεός με το λόγο του έφτιαξε το σύμπαν και ότι, συνεπώς, καθετί που βλέπουμε δημιουργήθηκε από κάτι που δεν φαίνεται(εβρ.11,1-3).έτσι η αποτελεσματικότητα της πίστεως γίνεται φανερή μέσα από σωρεία παραδειγμάτων που αναφέρει η προς Εβραίους Επιστολή. Επομένως ύψιστο δώρο του Θεού προς τον άνθρωπο είναι η ενσάρκωση του Ιησού Χριστού του προαιώνιου Υιού και Λόγου του Θεού. Έτσι κατ αυτόν τον τρόπο η χάρη του Θεού προς εμάς η οποίοι ζούμε μετά την ενανθρώπηση του Ιησού Χριστού είναι μεγαλύτερη από τη χάρη του Θεού προς τους ανθρώπους της Π. Διαθήκης, είναι η χάρη, η οποία οδηγεί στη δικαίωση και στη σωτηρία. 6

7 Dear brother and sisters in Christ, Our Holy Orthodox Church sets apart certain times of the year, month, week, and even day to be sanctified by prayer. We are drawing near the end of such a period, the 40-day period of fasting and preparation for the Nativity of Our Savior. Additionally, each and every day of the year is divided up into times of prayer, including prayers for the First Hour (6:00 AM), the Third Hour (9:00 AM), the Sixth Hour (12 noon), and the Ninth Hour (3:00 PM). For certain major holy days, such as Christmas, the Byzantine Emperor himself desired to be in church for every service, including the hours, in order to demonstrate that even he ruler of the majority of the known world was subject to the newborn King of Kings. Because it was impractical for him to come back and forth to the church four times throughout the day, the Hours were celebrated all together on these days, and therefore came to known as the Royal Hours. This year, our Typikon calls for them to be celebrated on Friday morning, Dec. 23. We know that everyone is busy this time of year, but so was the Emperor, the most powerful person on the planet at the time. And yet he made time to honor the true King. So let us too make every effort this week to attend as many services as possible: On Wednesday evening, December 21th we will celebrate Holy Unction (Healing Service) from 6:00-7:00 PM. On Friday morning December 22nd we will celebrate the Royal Hours from 9:00-11:00 AM. On Saturday morning December 23rd we will have Christmas Eve Orthros and Liturgy. 8 Simple but Profound Miracles of our Living Orthodox Faith +Saint Paisios of the Holy Mountain "Today, increased knowledge and trust in logic has, unfortunately, shaken our faith to its foundfations and filled our souls with question marks and doubts. This is why we don't have miracles anymore, because a miracle cannot be explained logically, it can only be experienced. But faith in God will bring down divine power and overturn all human expectations. It will perform miracles, resurrect the dead and astonish science. From the outside, all things pertaining to the spiritual life seem upside down. Indeed, the mysteries of God will be impossible to know and will appear strange and contrary to nature as long as we don't overturn our secular mindset and see everything with spiritual eyes. Those who believe that they can come to know God's mysteries through mere scientific theory, without a spiritual life, resemble a fool who thinks he can look through a telescope and see Paradise." Below is short list of some miracles that happen continuously, and are a constant witness of the Grace of the Holy Spirit in the Holy Orthodox Faith and traditions. You may have heard of some or all of them, but if not, may these help renew our zeal for the Faith, if only in a small way. Did you know that the flowers and basil from the Holy Cross that we get from the priest on the feast of the Exultation of the Holy Cross can catch yeast, and because it makes the dough rise wonderfully, we can make bread [prosforo] for the Divine Liturgy? The Feast of the Exultation of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem with the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem (taken from: 2. Did you know that holy water that is blessed in church by the Orthodox priest for the Holy Feast of Theophany or any other feast, as long as you keep it, will not spoil? 3. Did you know that in Jerusalem at the All-Holy Tomb of Christ, every year on Holy Saturday a Holy Fire miraculously comes only to the Orthodox Patriarch? A pilgrimage will convince you. [The fire is a visible symbol of the real presence of the Uncreated Light of Christ's Holy Resurrection. I've heard that for the first few minutes after the Patriarch comes out of the Holy Tomb, the fire does not burn anything that it touches. For more info, see: 4. Did you know that at Mount Sinai where the God-seer Moses saw the Burning Bush that was not consumed, when a stone is broken open, on the walls are depicted the Bush of the Prophet Moses? 5. Did you know that when monks die in the monastery of St. Savas in Jerusalem, their bodies do not freeze or dry-out or smell and they do not bury them in the soil but put them in a room? 6. Did you know that on the head (the bone) of the fish «Goulianos» which lives in Lake Gennisaret is depicted the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan River? 7. Did you know that every year on Mount Tabor in Jerusalem on Aug. 6, the Day of the Transfiguration of our Savior, a light-bearing Cloud appears, which covers the site of the monastery and illuminates the perimeter all night? 8

Did you know that when celebrating the Holy Martyr Markella in Chios, when the priest and the people visit the place of her martyrdom near the coast, and chant her Paraklesis [Supplication service], the sea water becomes heated and boils with bubbles, and as soon as the Paraklesis finishes, all these phenomena stop? The site of the martyrdom of St. Markella in Chios, and apparently the red color in the water in the foreground of the picture is the blood of St. Markella which also appears on her feast. 9. Did you know that in the Monastery of Panagia near Malevis in Tripoli is an ancient icon of the Theotokos which mysteriously makes myrrh that is highly fragrant? 10. Did you know that on the Holy Mountain [Mount Athos] the Virgin Mary has spoken many times with the monks to protect them from dangerous pirates, such as happened in the Monastery Vatopedi with the Holy Icon of the Panagia "Paramythia" [of Consolation?]? 11. Did you know that every year during the feast of the Theotokos [from August 6th to the 15th] in Markopoulo of Cephalonia [an island in Greece] snakes appear on the icon of the Virgin Mary and do not bite the pilgrims?" [This is a very real miracle that happens every year. A multitude of small snakes fill the holy church of the Theotokos only from August 6th-15th, they have small white crosses on them, they never harm anyone, they climb all over the icons in the church, and immediately after the feast, they disappear and are not seen for another year. Additional Miracles: -The Jordan River reverses its flow - Every year when the Orthodox celebrate the Great Feast of Theophany, and during the Blessing of the Waters, the Jordan River, in which Christ was baptized, turns back and reverses its flow. -St. Nicholas the New and the flowing blood - Every year at the feast of St. Nicholas, the new Righteous Martyr of Vounena, Greece, a miraculous and wonderworking liquid like blood flows from the place of his martyrdom. -The Flowers of St. John the Theologian - Marmaketos, Lasthiou, Crete - Every year, the people of the small village of Marmaketos in Crete (50 inhabitants), gather local wild flowers to decorate the Epitaphio of Christ on Holy Friday. On Holy Saturday, they gather the flowers and hang them throughout the church on string, where they dry out. On May 8th, the feast of St. John the Theologian, during the reading of the Gospel in the Divine Liturgy, these dead flowers miraculously show new flowers and green shoots. They are gathered by the people and placed near their icons for a time of need. When someone is sick, the weather is troublesome, etc., they place these flowers in the censer instead of incense and this works many miracles. This happens every year as a testament to Christ's Resurrection and the grace of Christ's Beloved Disciple. Gregory to come and bless your home, please complete the following form and return it to the Church office by December 31 st. Please print neatly. 18 18 To δένδρο των Χριστουγέννων Πλησιάζουν Χριστούγεννα και αρκετοί από εμάς άρχισαν σιγά-σιγά να διακοσμούν τα σπίτια τους για να υποδεχθούν το νεογέννητο Σωτήρα μας, Ιησού Χριστό. Το πιο γνωστό και το κατεξοχήν στολίδι των ημερών αποτελεί το χριστουγεννιάτικο δένδρο. Αν και πολλοί πιστεύουν ότι πρόκειται για έθιμο της Δυτικής Ευρώπης, το δένδρο των Χριστoυγέννων αποτελεί παλαιοχριστιανική παράδοση, που διατηρείται και σήμερα στον χώρο της Ορθοδοξίας. Απόδειξη αποτελεί το γεγονός ότι σε αρκετές μονές του Αγίου Όρους (στα οποία διατηρείται το βυζαντινό τυπικό), όταν πανηγυρίζει μια μονή δίπλα από την εικόνα της εορτής τοποθετούν και ένα δένδρο φτιαγμένο από πολύτιμο μέταλλο (χρυσάφι, ασήμι). Σκοπό έχει να θυμίσει το περίφημο ξύλου (=δένδρου) της Ζωής, που βρισκόταν εν μέσω του κήπου της Εδέμ, όπως αναφέρεται στο βιβλίο της Γενέσεως (Γεν. Β, 1). Η σύνδεση του ξύλου (=δένδρου) της Ζωής με τη μεγάλη εορτή των Χριστουγέννων τονίζεται και στην υμνολογία της Εκκλησίας. Χαρακτηριστικό είναι το προεόρτιο τροπάριο που αρχίζει με την προτροπή: Ετοιμάζου Βηθλέεμ, ήνακται πάσιν η Εδέμ, ευτρεπίζου Ευφραθά, ότι το ξύλο της ζωής εν τω σπηλαίω εξήνθησεν εκ της Παρθένου. Επίσης, στο ίδιο μοτίβο κινείται και το πρώτο ιδιόμελο του Μεγάλου εσπερινού της 25ης Δεκεμβρίου, που βεβαιώνει ότι και τα Χερουβείμ παραχωρεί του ξύλου της ζωής. Η αναφορά στα Χερουβείμ δεν είναι καθόλου τυχαία, γιατί σύμφωνα πάλι με το βιβλίο της Γενέσεως, όταν οι Πρωτόπλαστοι εκδιώχθηκαν από τον Παράδεισο, ο Θεός έταξε τα Χερουβείμ και την φλογίνην ρομφαίαν την στρεφομένην φυλάσσει την οδόν του ξύλου της ζωής (Γεν. Γ,22). Με την ενανθρώπησή του ο Χριστός άνοιξε και πάλι τις πύλες του Παραδείσου για την πεπτωκυία ανθρωπότητα. Το ξύλο της ζωής που είναι ο ίδιος ο Χριστός έγινε και πάλι προσιτό στους άνθρωπος, όπως και τότε στον Κήπο της Εδέμ. Γι αυτό και στην απεικόνιση της Ρίζης του Ιεσσαί συναντούμε ως παραλλαγή, την παράσταση της Γεννήσεως του Χριστού στην κορυφή του γενεαλογικού δένδρου. Η ίδια λογική εμφανίζεται και στο ότι στην εικονογραφία της Γεννήσεως συναντούμε, μερικές φορές, την Θεοτόκο με το Θείο Βρέφος και ένα δένδρο. Εκτός από την ορθόδοξη υμνογραφία και την εικονογραφία έρχεται και η λαϊκή παράδοση να συνδέσει το ξύλο της Ζωής με τα Χριστούγεννα, με το γνωστό έθιμο του Χριστόξυλου, που διατηρείται σε χωριά της Βορείου Ελλάδας. Σύμφωνα με τη λαϊκή συνήθεια, λίγο πριν τα Χριστούγεννα, ο πατέρας ή ο παππούς της οικογένειας βγαίνει στο δάσος ή στους αγρούς ψάχνοντας το πιο ωραίο κομμάτι ξύλο από άγρια κερασιά, πεύκο ή ελιά. Σκοπός είναι να το τοποθετήσουν στο τζάκι, για να κατακαεί κατά τη διάρκεια του εορταστικού δωδεκαημέρου (παραμονή Χριστουγέννων ως την εορτή των Θεοφανείων). Καίοντας το κούτσουρο θεωρούν ότι με αυτό τον τρόπο ζεσταίνεται ο μικρός Χριστός στην κρύα σπηλιά της Βηθλέεμ. Επίσης, πιστεύουν ότι αυτό φέρνει ευλογία και προστατεύει το σπίτι από τα κακοποιά στοιχεία (καλικάντζαροι), τα οποία τέτοιες μέρες μπαίνουν από τις καμινάδες, κλέβοντας ή προξενώντας ζημιές στα σπίτια, σύμφωνα με τη λαϊκή παράδοση. Το παραδοσιακό Χριστόξυλο αποτελεί πρόδρομο του γνωστού σε όλους εμάς Χριστουγεννιάτικου έλατου, που πρωτοεμφανίστηκε στον ελληνικό κόσμο το 1833, επί εποχής του Βαυαρού βασιλιά Όθωνα. Ο Όθωνας τοποθέτησε το χριστουγεννιάτικο έλατο στα ανάκτορά του στο Ναύπλιο, την τότε πρωτεύουσα του

19 ελληνικού κράτους, προκαλώντας θαυμασμό και αίσθηση στην τότε ελληνική κοινωνία. Το βαυαρικό αυτό έθιμο αποτελεί συνέχεια και προέκταση ενός παλαιότερου εθίμου από την κοιλάδα του Ρήνου, στην καρδιά της Γερμανίας. Εκεί τοποθετούσαν έλατα στο κέντρο της εκκλησίας, την παραμονή των Χριστουγέννων, εορτή του Αδάμ και της Εύας. Τα έλατα ήταν διακοσμημένα με κόκκινα μήλα, γεγονός το οποίο συμβόλιζε το δένδρο της γνώσεως τον καρπό του οποίου έφαγαν οι Πρωτόπλαστοι και γι αυτό εκδιώχθηκαν από τον Κήπο της Εδέμ. Με βάση τα πιο πάνω φαίνεται ότι το έθιμο αυτό συνδέεται άμεσα με την παλαιοχριστιανική παράδοση που τοποθετεί το δένδρο στο κέντρο του εορτασμού των Χριστουγέννων. Υπάρχει μεγάλη συνάφεια ανάμεσα στο έλατο με τα κόκκινα μήλα και της ορθόδοξης υμνογραφίας που παρουσιάζει τον νεογέννητο Χριστό ως δένδρο του Παραδείσου που εξήνθησεν εν τω σπηλαίω της Βηθλεέμ. Συνοψίζοντας, το δένδρο των Χριστουγέννων έφθασε στις μέρες μας μέσω παλαιοχριστιανικών παραδόσεων. Δεν εμφανίστηκε ως κάτι το εντελώς άγνωστο, αλλά επανήλθε με νέα μορφή από τη χριστιανική Δύση στον Ορθόδοξο χώρο μας, όπως αιώνες πριν που υμνήθηκε, όπως είδαμε, ως σύμβολο του Χριστού και του Παραδείσου. St. Innocent Orphanage is located near Rosarito, Mexico on a beautiful 16-acre ranch. St. Innocent Orphanage was founded in 1996, by Greg Yova, to provide a home for orphaned teenage boys. This home surpasses the basic needs of our youngsters and provides them with spiritual direction, a public education enhanced by private tutoring, athletics and extra-curricular activities and most importantly, tremendous amounts of love from all of the staff and volunteers. The goals of this trip are to love and serve a community, and to enter into a few days of fellowship, education, worship, and service with other Orthodox college students from across the United States. 21 Το θαύμα των Χριστουγέννων (Αληθινό Περιστατικό) Πριν από δώδεκα περίπου χρόνια ανήμερα τα Χριστούγεννα κίνησα με ανάμικτα συναισθήματα για πρώτη φορά για το Περιβόλι της Παναγιάς. Ήθελα να επισκεφθώ το γέροντα Παϊσιο, να δω από κοντά έναν άγιο της εποχής μας, να εξακριβώσω τις διαφορές, να εντρυφήσω στις παραινέσεις του. Η αλήθεια είναι πως λίγο η ανθρώπινη περιέργεια, λίγο η ανθρώπινη αδυναμία που συνδέεται με τη προτέρα εξακρίβωση του τι πρόκειται να συμβεί ήταν οι πραγματικές αιτίες. Το κρύο ήταν τσουχτερό και το Άγιο Όρος ήταν χιονισμένο. Ένας άγνωστος γέροντας ανέλαβε ως επίγειος άγγελος να με καθοδηγήσει μέχρι την Ιερά Μονή Κουτλουμουσίου. Η επιθυμία μου όμως να λάβω συγκεκριμένες απαντήσεις μ έκανε να πάρω μαζί με ένα δάσκαλο από τη Κοζάνη το μονοπάτι για την καλύβα του γέροντα στην Παναγούδα αμέσως μετά την ακολουθία του Εσπερινού. Με πρόσωπο σκυμμένο, καρδιά θλιμμένη και βήματα βαριά προσέγγισα το κελί του γέροντα. Αναρωτιόμουν τι θα έπραττα αν, ως καρδιογνώστης κοιτούσε βαθιά μέσα στη ψυχή μου και έβλεπε τα λάθη, την αμαρτία, τις παραλείψεις, τα μίση, τις μικρότητες, τις κατακρίσεις, τον αληθινό ψυχικό πόλεμο. Στη σκέψη και μόνο πως ο γέροντας έχει τέτοια ικανότητα δείλιασα και με έπιασε ντροπή. Αναθαρρούσα όμως και μονολογούσα μέσα μου. Ε! και τι έγινε, ο μόνος είμαι... Μια άλλη φωνή ωστόσο, άγνωστη τότε, γνωστή τώρα σε εμένα απαντούσε. Υπάρχει λύση Όσο και να επιχειρούσα να μην την ακούω και να την περιφρονώ τόσο αυτή δυνάμωνε. Υπάρχει λύση, φώναξα κάποια στιγμή χωρίς να το καταλάβω και ξάφνιασα τον συνοδοιπόρο μου δάσκαλο. Με το που φθάσαμε στο κελί άρχισα να νιώθω κάπως περίεργα. Όλα, γύρω προκαλούσαν μια ηρεμία. Το χιονισμένο τοπίο, τα πουλιά, ο ήχος από το νερό στο ποτάμι. Βούρκωσα χωρίς να κλαίω. Οι σκέψεις περιστρέφονταν γύρω από την άγνωστη αυτή εσωτερική φωνή- παρόρμηση: «Υπάρχει λύση»! «Καλώς τα καλόπαιδα». Με τη φωνή του γέροντα Παϊσίου επανήλθα στην πραγματικότητα. Καθώς περνούσα το κατώφλι του Κελιού, μια ζεστασιά πρωτόγνωρη συγκλόνισε το είναι μου. Αληθινό άγγιγμα ψυχής. Ο γέροντας με κοίταξε. Το βλέμμα του ήταν αρκετό για να απομακρυνθούν όλες οι επιφυλάξεις και να ανοίξει η καρδιά. Το μικρό διάστημα που έμεινα κοντά στον ταπεινό γέροντα Παϊσιο αρκούσε για να αναθεωρήσω σιγά σιγά πολλά πράγματα. Η αντίληψή μου για τον κόσμο μεταβλήθηκε. Και για πρώτη φορά ένιωθα την ανάγκη να ευχαριστήσω τον Θεό για όλα. Η μικρή επικοινωνία με το γέροντα λειτούργησε μακροπρόθεσμα καταλυτικά. Εκεί στο Κελί της Παναγούδας βίωσα τη ζεστασιά των ποιμένων. Αφουγκράστηκα το άγγελμα των αγγέλων «επί γης ειρήνη». Έζησα τα Χριστούγεννα. Χριστούγεννα μακριά από τα φώτα, τα γλυκά, τις ψεύτικες ευχές για ειρήνη, τα υποκριτικά γέλια, την ιδιοτελή καλοσύνη και την ελεγχόμενη αγάπη που απευθύνεται σ αυτούς που επιδιώκουμε να μας αγαπούν. Μακριά από το θαύμα των θαυμάτων, τη Γέννηση του Σωτήρος Χριστού. Μακριά από την αληθινή πορεία και το μοναδικό σκοπό του ανθρώπου, δηλαδή τη σωτηρία του. Σήμερα με βεβαιότητα μπορώ να φωνάξω πως ο Χριστός δύναται να γεννηθεί σε κάθε άνθρωπο. Τώρα ευθαρσώς μπορώ να διακηρύξω και να διαλαλήσω πως αρκεί να ανοίξουμε με ειλικρίνεια μια χαραμάδα στη ψυχή μας και τότε Αυτός θα φροντίσει τα υπόλοιπα. Μια μικρή χαραμάδα για να πλημμυρίσουμε ειρήνη, να γευθούμε καρπούς διαφορετικούς από αυτούς που μας σερβίρει εντέχνως η εκκοσμίκευση. Μια μικρή χαραμάδα για να αλλάξουν τα πάντα ριζικά. 24 Coffee Sponsorship It is amazing how a modest offering of pastries and coffee after Liturgy on Sundays can provide the spark for so much fellowship and community feeling! Our Sunday coffee hours not only give us a chance to visit with friends, but also to exercise our philoxenia or hospitality, towards our guest and newcomers to the parish, who have just participated in the Divine Liturgy with us. Typically, our coffee hours are hosted by Philoptochos and various ministries. But families or groups of friends may consider hosting one as well. Consider hosting a coffee hour to commemorate an anniversary, memorial, birthday, name day etc. Philoptochos will continue to prepare coffee, guide host and supply paper products. Suggestions for refreshments are fruit, veggies, cookies, pastries, croissants and bagels. Fruit juices are great for children and non-coffee drinkers. Fasting Day suggestions are nuts, hummus, veggies, halva, jello, dried or fresh fruit, chips and salsa and salads. It is recommended to have at least 4 people to help set up, serve and cleanup.
