NICHOLAS CHURCH OF THE WTC Ηχος Βαρύς Grave Tone Saints Isidore and Myrope the Great Martyrs of Chios (May 14) The Holy Martyr Isidore lived during the III Century on the Island of Chios, and was a native of Alexandria. During the first year of rule of the emperor Decius ( ) there was issued an edict to make a census of all those capable to serve in the armies of the Roman empire. Saint Isidore, tall and strong of body, was drafted into the regiment of the militarycommander Numerius. Saint Isidore was a Christian, he led a life of temperance and abstinence, he was chaste and he shunned all the pagan customs. Another imperial edict then commanded, that all the soldiers were to worship the Roman pagan gods and to offer them sacrifice. Not to obey the edict carried the penalty of torture and death. The centurion reported to the military-commander Numerius, that Isidore was a Christian. At the interrogation before Numerius Saint Isidore without flinching confessed his faith in Christ the Saviour and refused to offer sacrifice to idols. Numerius urged the saint not to expose himself to tortures and to obey the will of the emperor, but Saint Isidore answered, that he would obey only the will of the eternal God, Christ the Saviour, and never would he renounce Him. The saint was handed over to torture. During the time of torments he praised Christ God and denounced the pagan idols.when the Saint s father learned that St. Isidore was a confessed Christian, he journeyed to Chios to convince him to deny his faith. He succeded in convincing Numerius to deliver St. Isidore into his custody, and proceeded to try to convert him. The Saint, however, entreated his father to open the eyes of his soul and behold the truth [of Christ]. His father was uncompromising, and could not accept that his son believed in the Crucified Nazarene and refused to accept his ancestral religion of idols. He condemned him and delivered him to the admiral Numerius, entreating him to expedite the death sentence of his son. Numerius therefore tied him to a horse that dragged him over rocks.the military-commander gave orders to cut out the tongue of the saint, but even after this the saint continued distinctly to give glory to Christ. Numerius in fright fell to the ground and himself lost the gift of speech. Getting up with the help of soldiers, by means of gestures he demanded a small board and on it wrote an order to cut off the head of Saint Isidore. Saint Isidore welcomed his death sentence with joy and said: I glorify Thee, O my Master, that by Thy mercy Thou hast accepted me in Thine Heavenly Habitation! The death of the martyr occurred in the year 251.After execution his body was cast out without burial, but another saint, the secret Christian Ammonios, took up his body and committed it to earth [along with St. Myrope; see below]. Later on Ammonios himself accepted a martyr s death in the city of Kyzikos.The remains of the early Christian Basilica of Saint IsidoreSt. Myrope was born in Ephesus of Christian parents. [Her name is derived from the fact that she would visit the grave of the Holy Martyr St. Hermione in Ephesus, and distribute the myrrh flowing therefrom to heal the sick] After the death of her father, she moved with her mother to the island of Chios, where she suffered for Christ. The suffering of this holy virgin took place soon after the suffering and death of the glorious Martyr Isidore the soldier (May 14). When the torturers had beheaded Isidore, the courageous Myrope secretly took his body, censed it, and honorably buried it in a special place. The villainous prince Numerian heard that the martyr s body had been stolen and wanted to kill the guards. Learning that innocent men would suffer for her good deed, blessed Myrope appeared before the authorities and acknowledged that she had taken the martyr s body and buried it. By order of the prince, the entire body of Christ s holy virgin was severely whipped, and finally she was cast into prison covered with wounds. But the Lord did not leave His martyr comfortless. At midnight a heavenly light illumined the prison, and many angels, with St. Isidore in their midst, appeared to her. Peace be to you, Myrope, St. Isidore said to her. Your prayer has reached God, and soon you will be with us and will receive the wreath prepared for you. The holy martyr rejoiced and at that moment surrendered her soul to her God. A sweet fragrance issued from her body, filling the entire prison. One of the guards, seeing all of this and sensing the fragrance, believed in Christ, was baptized, and soon received a martyr s death. St. Myrope took up her habitation in eternity in the year 251. Saint Myrope s body was interred beside Isidore s, and a chapel erected over the graves. Saint Marcian built another in the fifth century. In 1525, the relics of Isidore and Myrope were moved by the Venetians to the Church of Saint Mark in Venice. Some of the relics of Saint Isidore were returned to Chios from Venice in 1967.

The Kneeling Vespers(Vespers of the Holy Spirit) on the day of Pentecost is the first time we kneel again.

St. John's First Universal Letter 1:1-7 THAT WHICH WAS from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life - the life was made manifest, and we saw it, and testify to it, and proclaim to you the eternal life which was with the Father and was made manifest to us - that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you may have fellowship with us; and our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing this that our joy may be complete. This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not live according to the truth; but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. The Gospel of John 20:19-31 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them: "Peace be with you." When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him: "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them: "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in His side, I will not believe."eight days later, His disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said: "Peace be with you." Then He said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing." Thomas answered Him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to Him: "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe."now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

4 Ο Άγιος Ισίδωρος καταγόταν από την Αλεξάνδρεια. Ήταν στρατιώτης με το βαθμό του Εφέδρου στο Ρωμαϊκό στρατό, σιτιστής και ένθερμος Χριστιανός.Επί αυτοκράτορα Δεκίου έφθασε στην Χίο ο ρωμαϊκός στόλος με ναύαρχο το Νουμεριανό. Ο Ισίδωρος και ο Χριστιανός φίλος του Αμένιος εγκαταστάθηκαν σ ένα σπίτι στον Κάμπο. Τα βράδια που προσεύχονταν στο Θεό, λάμψεις και φλόγες κατέβαιναν στη σκεπή του σπιτιού τους από τον ουρανό. Τότε πολλοί από τους γείτονές τους εντυπωσιάστηκαν και πείσθηκαν από τον Ισίδωρο και τον Αμένιο ότι αυτό το φως ήταν θεϊκή επιταγή και βαπτίσθηκαν Χριστιανοί. Το γεγονός διαδόθηκε γρήγορα. Μάλιστα ο Εκατόνταρχος Ιούλιος το ανέφερε στο ναύαρχο Νουμέριο. Ο Νουμέριος δεν άργησε να ακούσει το ίδιο και από τον ίδιο τον Ισίδωρο, όταν τον προσκάλεσε να ομολογήσει. Τότε τον έδειραν σκληρά και κατόπιν τον έριξαν στη φυλακή. Ο πατέρας του μόλις έμαθε το γεγονός αυτό, αμέσως κίνησε για τη Χίο, πολύ στεναχωρημένος, διότι ο γιος του εγκατέλειψε την πατροπαράδοτη ειδωλολατρική θρησκεία. Παρά τις θερμές παρακλήσεις του πατέρα του,ο Ισίδωρος έμεινε ακλόνητος στην πίστη του. Από τη σταθερότητά του οργίσθηκε πολύ ο ειδωλολάτρης πατέρας που παρότρυνε το Νουμέριο να τον θανατώσει. Ο Άγιος βασανίσθηκε σκληρά, μαστιγώθηκε, σύρθηκε δεμένος σε άλογο και τέλος αποκεφαλίστηκε στις 14 Μαΐου 250 μ.χ. Το σώμα του το έριξαν σε μια ρεματιά για να το κατασπαράξουν τα αγρίμια. Σύμφωνα με διαταγή του Νουμερίου έπρεπε να παραμείνει άταφο. Παρόλο που φυλασσόταν από οπλισμένους στρατιώτες, μια ευσεβής γυναίκα η αγία Μυρόπη (2 Δεκεμβρίου η μνήμη της) κατάφερε να ξεφύγει την προσοχή των φρουρών, να πάρει και να ενταφιάσει με τιμές το άγιο σκήνωμά του. Αυτό έγινε αφορμή και του δικού της μαρτυρίου. Μαρτύρησε και ενταφιάστηκε κατόπιν δίπλα στον Άγιο Ισίδωρο. Ο άγιος Ισίδωρος είναι πολιούχος της Χίου και προστάτης των αρτοποιών. Σε όλη τη Μεσόγειο, επίσης, τιμάται ωςπροστάτης των ναυτικών. Οι Χιώτες έχτισαν τον 5ο αιώνα μ.χ. πάνω στον τάφο του ένα πολύ ωραίο ναό σε τρίκλιτη βασιλική.η λαϊκή παράδοση της Χίου έχει συνδέσει την τιμή του Αγίου Ισιδώρου (παρετυμολογία του ονόματός του)με την υ- γεία και τη σωματική ευεξία. Τον ονομάζουν από Άγιο Ισίδωρο, Αϊ Σίδερο Οι πιστοί κάνουν τάματα στον Άγιο Ισίδωρο για να είναι σιδερένιοι. Πολυάριθμα είναι τα θαύματα που με τη χάρη του Κυρίου μας επιτελεί ο Άγιος Ισίδωρος στους πιστούς, αναξιοπαθούντες και ευλαβείς Χριστιανούς. Βιώματα από την θαυματουργική χάρη του Αγίου είχε και ο άγιος Ἀνθιμος της Χίου, ο κτήτωρ της Ιρεράς Μονής Παναγίας της Βοήθειας.Το 1225μ.Χ. (μετά την Άλωση της Πόλης από τους Φράγκους) τα τίμια λείψανά του μεταφέρθηκαν στη Βενετία. Εκεί θαυματούργησαν σώζοντας την πόλη το 1348 από επιδημία πανούκλας. Σε ένδειξη ευγνωμοσύνης οι Βενετοί έφτιαξαν προς τιμήν του Αγίου εξαιρετικό παρεκκλήσιο στη Βασιλική του Αγίου Μάρκου, στολισμένο με εξαιρετικά ψηφιδωτά.το 1967μ.Χ.(18 Ιουνίου) ένα μέρος από τα άγια λείψανά του αποδόθηκε επίσημα στην εκκλησία της Χίου, και εκτίθενται προς προσκύνηση στον Ιερό Μητροπολιτικό Ναό των Αγίων Μηνά, Βίκτωρος και Βικεντίου στην πόλη της Χίου.Έκτοτε και κάθε χρόνο,το ιερό λείψανο του Αγίου Πρωτομάρτυρος λιτανεύεται μεγαλόπρεπα στη Χίο,δέχεται τις ευλαβικές εκδηλώσεις των πιστών και στέλνει πλούσια την ευλογία του στους Ναυτικούς Χιώτες που τον έχουν προστάτη τους,αφού και ο Άγιος ζυμώθηκε με την αρμύρα της.η τιμή του πρωτομάρτυρος της αγιοτόκου και μυροβόλου Χίου, Αγίου Ισιδώρου, επεκτείνεται με την ύπαρξη ιερών ναών επ ονόματί του τόσο στα γειτονικά νησιά (Λέσβος, Σάμος και Ικαρία), όσο και σε νησιά της Δωδεκανήσου (Ρόδος, Λέρος), αλλά και των Κυκλάδων (Νάξος, Μύκονος).Επίσης στον ιερό Ναό μας -Άγιοι Ισίδωροι Λυκαβηττού- με ιδιαίτερη λαμπρότητα εορτάζεται η μνήμη του Αγίου Ισιδώρου του εν Χίω. Από την παραμονή -με πανηγυρικό αρχιερατικό εσπερινό- αλλά και την κυριώνυμο ημέρα της εορτής με Αρχιερατική Θεία Λειτουργία, λιτανεία και παράκληση του Αγίου. Στολίζεται ο ναός και η εικόνα του Αγίου. Ετοιμάζεται Αβραμιαία φιλοξενία για όλους τους προσκυνητές Άγιος Ισίδωρος και η Μαστίχα Χίου Αν και δεν αναφέρεται στο συναξάριο του Αγίου Ισιδώρου, υπάρχει μια παράδοση στη Χίοπου συνδέει τον Σχίνο και τη Μαστίχα της Χίου με τον Άγιο Ισίδωρο. Στον τόπο που βασάνιζαν τον Άγιο Ισίδωρο οι Σχίνοι τα Μαστιχόδεντρα δηλαδή- έβγαλαν ευωδιαστά δάκρυα, την Μαστίχα, κλαίγοντας για το μαρτύριο του Αγίου Ισιδώρου. Μια παραλλαγή της ίδιας παράδοσης αναφέρει ότι Μαστίχα βγάζουν μόνο οι Σχίνοι στις περιοχές που ο Άγιος Ισίδωρος δάκρυσε ή μάτωσε από τα βασανιστήρια που του έκαναν. After you click on ON-LINE REGISTRATION CLICK HERE on the homepage, you will find two registration sections on the actual registration page. READ THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY!!! Section 1 - this is for families who have not participated in this past year's DADGOBL basketball program which did on-line registration. Basically this is a link to create a family profile with one ID and password for all your children. Every participant needs to have a baptismal and birth certificate uploaded, so these should be scanned to your computer prior to starting the registration process. If your baptismal includes your date of birth, you can scan it 1x and include it on both uploads (when required). This process takes about 5 minutes to create the family profile and another 2-3 minutes for each participant --- as long as you have your scanned docs ready. Section 2 - this is for families who have participated in this past year's DADGOBL basketball program and already have an on-line family profile. You will need to login and register each of your children. This process takes less than 2 minutes. Please remember that this is a new process for all of us so be patient and read before you click. Constantine and Helen Cathedral going to Splish Splash June 23, 2016 Please join the JOY of our Cathedral for a fun day at Splish Splash! 8:00am -Departure from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn (Exact Location TBA) 8:30am Pick up from Sts. Constantine and Helen Cathedral Cost of Trip: $50 (includes transportation, 1 meal, and entry fee to Splish Splash) Children must be accompanied by a guardian! Last day of classes for A. Fantis Parochial School is on June 22nd. Weekends & Holidays makes it very difficult for the children to enjoy the theme park because of the large crowds. Although certain schools are still open until June 24th, we hope it will work out for your child to attend.
